Thank you so much for this video I am restoring a Columbia road bike from 1970 something and I use to work on bikes all the time but haven't worked on vintage bikes in years and forgot how to do basic vintage bike repairs this really helps thanks
Really appreciated the video. Thank you. Please note based on this video I bought the HCW 18 wrench. It probably works on a Schwinn, but the span was too wide for my old Western Flyer tandem.
Holy cow where was this 5 years ago for my super old MTB one crank I figured it out on my own took some time. New Bearing were cheap thou :) I removed the Cups with a Hammer and a Stick, then I reinstalled them with a Hammer :)
I noticed that in my country, all these bottom bracket cups have a really small inside diameter hole, so it's not possible to take the crankarm off without hammering one or both cups with a wrench. I already worked with old and new bikes, watched a good amount of videos about this BB and never seen a cup like this in the video
Thank you so much! Best video, and I have watch too many. Very well done! Love your care to explain as you go! I feel more so much more confident to do this next week when my bearings arrive.
how do you remove the cups from the frame? I have a complete new kit, and I don't want to leave the original cups in, if I don't have to. Love your videos BTW. I am learning soooo much.
Thank you! I was thinking I would never figure out how to remove the pedals from this bike. Turning it into a plow but the plow video didn't show how he got the pedals off
Is a little bit "better method" to just install loose individual bearings, so MORE bearings are sharing the load? I know to do that you'd have to have the frame laying on its' side to keep the bearings from falling out. Thank you again!
I have a folding bike with this kind of bottom bracket cups, but the crank is a three piece?? What would I do if I want to replace it with something more modern? It doesn't seal at all so it gets creaky even if it just gets wet.
Great video, can you help me with a brand new bike - one piece crank that wobbles in casing - Huffy Cranbrook. Can I just tighten to secure more? Can't budge the 30mm piece, so thin and hard to grasp. Can I turn it to tighten? Or is it the other piece with the 2 notches and needs a special tool?
I'm trying to do a bafange mid Drive I need to know what size adapter I need to make it fit I think it wants BSA but I can't find it an adapter that fits my bottom bracket and takes me to the the thing mid Drive
Hello, I have a 1 piece crank but my chainring is rubbing on the frame. Is there any way i can put a spacer for it not to rub? If so where do i put the spacer
I have the same style on exercise bike and even i follw installation perfectly it always come loose even after using double nut and loctite there is always play from side to side after 3 or 4 hours of using the bike from thigthenig the bike
FORGOT RUST. Greatly helpful, but If were new to this on a 50 year old bike there's a solid chance that cone ain't sliding off like it does on camera. It would be nice, and realistic, if you included assumed rusted threads and solidified grease removal in all of your vintage parts videos. My answer was hammer, screwdriver, steel wool and an hour of toil so I would love to find an easier solution next time around.
How to remove a stubborn lock nut? I used the spanner counterclockwise at first to remove it and got it ready stuck! I should taking notes from this video to clockwise my turns to loosen it. The lock nut is worn out. How do I remove it and the worn locknut?
Arrange yourself and the cranks for best mechanical advantage. If you stand behind the bike, have the right arm face to the back. Select the wrench flats that will have the wrench face to back the back. Reach over the frame (or through the frame) with your right hand. Pull up on the right arm while pushing down on the left. Keep the wrench straight and apply force. Two arms moving opposite direction.
Typically when a crank arm becomes loose on the spindle of the bottom bracket it will need to be replaced. They will continually come loose. New arms are fairly cost effective from a local shop or online if you know the length and the orientation of the square.
Kind of think that this old fauber crank had it's good sides compared to todays hollow tech bearing which wears out pretty fast and you have to buy new bottom bracket which on the other hand is not so expensive.
The caged bearings for the One Piece crank sets are not universal. If you are replacing the entire unit with cups and cones, it should come with new bearings to match.
I was able to successfully remove my one piece crank from my bottom bracket and take everything apart to replace the bearings, but I have no clue where I can find new bearings. Where can I find these bearings for a 1979 Schwinn suburban? I don't know what size they are either. The bearings have a code on them "6178a" if that helps at all. Thanks
can a one peace crank be replaced with a different type? im looking to replace the one on my bike with a crank with a free wheel sprocket for a project of mine.
There are adapters that be fitting into the large shell that reduce the diameter to the common BSC threading (1.37x24). A cartridge bottom bracket can then be installed.
It matters which way the cage is facing. The open side should face the cone. The wrong way will mean the metal cage rubs against the bearing surfaces, rather than the ball bearings. Put the cage on the cone, and spin it. Now flip it over and spin again. One side rolls on the ball bearings, that is the correct orientation.
Can these types of cranks be upgraded to something better? I got a free Murray that has this type of setup. Would like to make it a bit higher tech. I know it's like putting lipstick on a pig, but it's for an ebike I'm building.
after ungreasing and regreasing whenever i pedal it gets stuck while turning like somethings pushing against it making it wayy harder to pedal and makes a sound like medal is touching medal any help anyone?
The cone on the driveside is removed either with a large wrench or a vise on the wrench flats on the outter most part of the cone. Or sometime there are notches for a spanner tool.
NUTS. Every video I find isn't showing me what I need. I'm trying to REPLACE the crank arm. HOW do you get those parts OFF the opposite side???? Mine wont budge. Then again, I see a special tool you folks use. Not sure what that's called or where to find one.
The crank needs a crank remover tool, also called a "crank puller" or "crank extractor". For the three piece cranks, the arm is pressed tightly to a spindle. The bolts are remover, but then a remover such at the CWP-7 is used to un-press the arm. www.parktool.com/product/universal-crank-puller-for-square-taper-and-splined-cranks-cwp-7
You are on the right track. Hammer and a large punch from the opposing side is how these are removed. Might need a slightly larger hammer and to walk it out hitting one location and then a location 180 degrees from it.
@@parktool yes I had to go to a bigger hammer and bigger pice of pipe that covered the entire cup from inside and still had to give it 3 good hard hits before it popped out. The inside feels and looks was glued in place
Man, you are saving lives with these videos! Love the effort you put in. This is so clear and easy to understand. THank you so much
He's saving my wallet! Just to add!

Another great video from Calvin Jones, clear and accurate, not a second wasted with useless words. Thank you!
Funny when I'm doing jobs on my bikes I normally watch the video first and then have Calvin's unique voice playing in my head 😆 great videos
The most detailed example of removal and Install so far 👌
I really appreciate this video. Very simple, straight forward, easy to follow.
Thank you Calvin! With the explanation I didn't fear of a possible bad installing after.
0:26 30mm? I think you meant 32mm 😉
I love one piece cranks, though these days the bearing outer cups are a bit soft.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us. It's been many, many years since I've done this work.
Love this video. Clear easy to understand instructions. Thank you!

Thank you park tool, without your vids i wouldn't know how to fix my bike
Thank you for this. I could not figure out how to get the cone tight so it didn't wiggle. I didn't know working on bikes was that complicated lol.
Thank you so much!!! ♡♡♡ I took apart my daughters bike to repaint it and got stumped putting it back together!
Great video. I needed this to fix this broken Schwinn falcon crank. It got ran over and the crank broke where the pedal starts.

If I want to convert this to Hollowtech bottom bracket how do I size it?
Thanks for the easy to understand presentation!

What is the pluses and minuses of a one piece versus a three piece?
Thank you for your time
I had that exact Schwinn :-) Had to sell it, which I hated. Cool bike.
Thank you. You save me 70 bucks today :)
Can you do a video about swapping a one piece to a 3 piece?
This is just for one brand of converter.

Pregunta: ¿Se puede reemplazar con "Press-Fit" en caso de que se acaben este tipo de componente?.
Gracias.
Parts for these cranks and bottom brackets are still available. The bottom bracket is a press fit but cannot be replaced by a newer pressfit standard.

Can It be replaced with external bearing bottom bracket? thanks
There are adapters that can be pressing in place that accept threaded bottom brackets. The external bearing style can then be installed.
@@parktool Thanks for the reply, what's the name of the adapter ? It looks like a double threaded ring, doesn't it ? Kind regards.
That really helped me understand how to service mine

SOO helpful. Thank you
this is for a 50mm bottom bracket, because in a 45mm you have to remove the cups from the frame to remove the crank arm
Are the cups replaceable on this bike ?
Yes. Use a punch and hammer from the inside. Use a press to install new one, greasing the press interface.
Where can I buy a whole new crankset from scrach
Hello, are the shell, cages bearings universal size ? I want to replace the whole crank set because the chain ring is bent
The caged bearings for the One Piece crank sets are not universal. If you are replacing the entire unit with cups and cones, it should come with new bearings to match.

I believe they're universal and that you can take the old ones to a bike shop and they can get you new ones that fit.

@@parktool Awesome! Thanks!
I need to swap bottom brackets from frame to frame and cant seem to get the cups on the new frame??
For this style, the cups are tapped out with a punch. The cups are then pressed into a new frame using a press.
All the left hand side lock nuts on one piece cranks i have experienced have been 32 mm.
thank's for uploading that !
Nice,thank you
Thank you.
Is it possible to switch out a two or three piece crank for a one piece?
The one-piece crank requires a very large shell. The bikes made for the two or three piece cranks do not come close to the size needed.
Park Tool
Sad to hear it, but thank you.
Very beneficial
Can I replace the one piece with a three piece ?
Yes, you can install adapters the reduce the sizing and provide internal threading for the three-piece bottom bracket spindle units.
Thank you!
is there a substitute tool for the hcw 18 wrench for the left cone?
Danman_ 28 did u find it
Danman_ 28 have you tried using two flat head screwdrivers?
Thanks а lot for the helpful video 🤝

Very good.
Is it a bb30 or pf30?
Neither. The "American" style is nominally 2" ID. It is an early press fit, but is not BB30 nor PF30.
