  • How to overhaul the bottom bracket on a BMX bike with a one piece crank set. I clean and lube everything. I could have replaced the bearings, but they looked like they were in good shape. The bike is a Trek Subvert 1.0.

RJ The Bike Guy just one question, how did you clean the bearings?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 років тому

@@YourMom-kp8xs Often in mineral spirits, and with citrus degreaser and a scrub brush, or a combination of both.

THIS is the video I needed. I can't even bare to watch Park Tool videos with that old guys monotone voice and turns really simple procedures into sales videos for tools sold by Park Tools. No, I did not need the $30 - 15mm pedal wrench. I used my 15mm craftsman wrench and it worked just fine. I can't tolerate their videos anymore. Every. Single. Video. is a tutorial with them advertising the entire time. You think about it, Park Tool - like what do they actually do? It was smart. They made a bunch of tools for bicycles, then made tutorials on things people would know, all while advertising their tools. That's the real purpose of ParkTool's tutorial.
    Thanks a ton RJ

It's been awhile since I've worked on a BMX bike (been working on mountain bikes and road bikes for past 7 years), and I love the old school style cranks! I don't feel like I'm going to snap them off when I'm cornering, or even at the dirt jumps!
So thank you much for the video... It was a great refresher!

You’re on a roll for my bmx restoration! I took the crank arm off but decided not to pull the gear completely off, I guess there’s not real reason to if the whole things cleans up nice. Thanks for sharing! Bike shop got the races out for me and gave me new hardware for my 88 restoration, need to paint this weekend!

The more I watch RJ the more I like your channel .
An American crankset another name for it is a one piece crank aka Ashtabula
It looks like the rear wheel of that BMX is a 48 spoke wheel.
You mentioned your talent is to disassemble and reassemble any mechanical systems but also the way you present the show ..
I'm an old school bike mechanic and I enjoy wheel building the most:-)
I would like to give you a heads up of good quality tools made by cyclus tools based in Germany..
I recently purchased a bottom bracket thread chasing tool for BSA 1.37 inches by 24 threads and facing tool all under 500 Canadian dollars about 400 USD.. Just for my home hobby shop:-) I also like Park Tool but there are other great European and Taiwanese toolmakers for bicycle mechs.
    Thx
    Damian.

I've seen this style of crank on Apollo Mountain bikes (I think it's a UK only brand?) A friend mine kept killing bearings because he kept riding the bike with a loose crank, eventually it bent the crank and warped the bottom bracket barrel writing off the frame.
So if you notice an significant play in your bottom bracket get it fixed as soon as possible as it can damage the bottom bracket barrel/tube.

+Isaiah Lewis You need to isolate the issue. Is it the cable or the brakes themselves. Disconnect the cable from the brakes. Are the still stick? If not, replace the cable. If yes, then clean and lube brake pivot points.

I see a lot of these iny shop. 2 things. First, the keud washer on the non drive side has a tab that indexes in the keyway slot on the crank. They wear oit and turn. Not supposed to. 2nd, Every one Ive done required removing both cups. Crank would come out otherwise. But, if you are gona disassemble them, do it 100%. Oh, put the bearing ring in your palm and pit a dollop of grea on it and push/turn the bearing to force grease in the bearing. Ball side up in your palm.

Is there a way to upgrade this setup to the modern ones or do I have to reuse all of my old parts. I was given a bike yesterday that uses this setup but it was disassembled probably 25 years ago so some parts are missing. Also much of the bike has been laying in a pile of bike parts to other bikes so I don't know exactly what is for what

It's always better to replace questionable parts. Sometimes though, a replacement either isn't in the budget or isn't readily available. Careful use of a center punch on a well supported washer can extrude the key far enough to restore the locking function.

this video save for MT my old rigid mountain bike, tho I have no any kind of wrench you got there sir. moreover here in small port town mostly bike shop/repair using a large pipe wrench as they got no specialized wrench. and to remove/reinstall every part that had hole on it or to cut off chain or remove/reinstall threaded rear cassette they using brute force. using a mallet/hammer and a dull chisel/ a dull nail. sound stupid, but it's works. so what dya think sir? should i adopt it too as 'How to MT Bikes in Hack/wrong way' ?
    thanks :)
