  • Are Human Pain Medications Safe For Dogs? Advil, Aspirin, etc.
Whether it’s due to a limp or a cut, at some point, all pet owners will inevitably find themselves asking, “What can I give my dog for pain?”
The first thing all pet owners should do when they suspect something is wrong with their pet is call their veterinarian; of course, most animals have an uncanny ability to only get sick when the vet is closed, so it’s also important to know where the nearest emergency vet clinic is located. However, if it doesn’t seem to be a total crisis and you believe your dog can wait until morning to see the doctor, there are a few things you can do to help your pet stay comfortable until a vet appointment.
Whether your dog seems to have a limp, a sore back, an upset stomach or a painful ear, one of the first things you should do is make your dog a comfortable place to relax and stay relatively immobile. If your dog has a crate, maybe put a few extra blankets and pillows in there, and bring the food and water bowls close to the door so they don’t have to travel far. If your pet is agreeable, you could even close the crate door to keep out other animals in your home who may want to investigate or play, and to encourage the injured animal to stay still.
If your pet seems to have trouble getting around, perhaps due to a sore leg or hips, if you’re able, you should lift and carry your animal up and down stairs. The less movement and strain on its sore joints, the better.
As far as medications go, there are no human medicines that are totally safe to give to pets. However, for short-term care, a human non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Aspirin or Advil can be safe for your adult pet.
Puppies and cats of all ages should never be given human medications, because they have virtually no tolerance, and even a small dose can be lethal!

I DID SOME RESEARCH AND VETERINARIANS DO SUGGEST AT TIMES ADVIL FOR BIG BREED DOGS IN SMALL DOSES. MY DOG HAS BEEN HAVING EAR ISSUES AND IT SEEMS THAT HE IS IN PAIN. SO I GAVE HIM ONE ADVIL IN HIS FOOD LAST NIGHT AND NOT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH, AND HE SEEMS TO BE VERY HAPPY TODAY.

You state aspirin is not safe for your dog? Yet your dropbox says yes you can give aspirin to your adult dog. Hummm
I called my vet and she told me to administer aspirin for my dogs pain. I have taken my dog to vet and aspirin was prescribed her. On another occasion because of inflammation she was prescribed prednisone. Both of these meds do help her tremendously and have had no side effects.
Because of your video I contacted a few more veterinarian's to make sure these meds are safe. And they all have said yes at the right dosage.

Exactly. I’m so confused on this topic. Some docs and sites say not to give dogs aspirin yet others say it is fine .. I was told to go to a pet shop to look for something. On the shelf is dog aspirin which is simple aspirin but at smaller dosages lol

Vet do not care if your pet is in pain and all they want you to take your pet dog to them so they can screw you with excessive vet bill and medications.

@jmdds Most of the vet clinics in Phoenix are like this, just awful how they put profit over pets. A person really has to self educate & think critically when dealing with any veterinarian.

    Hey Alex,
We're trying to teach my dog Ned (blue heeler so smart breed) to stay off the couch by giving him treats whenever he gets off the couch, and also when he gets into his bed which is on the floor in the loungeroom, but I think he has figured out that if he gets on the couch and then jumps off he will get treats :/. Any advice for me on this one? Cheers

He is a lovly dog responds to sit down leave and all that but when he is led on sofa and you try moving him off he growls and snaps at you he also does this much more viciously when he has picked something up in his mouth on a walk and he has made me bleed before. Morgan Weaving definitely seek out a positive reinforcement trainer. It’s really hard to teach yourself at home especially dealing with aggression/reactive behavior on any level. If a professional isn’t an option (although highly recommended) do lots of research and implement positive reinforcement as well as making sure you’re teaching your dog the necessary things while their still young. Socializing with other dogs and humans in different places is so crucial. Believe me dealing with an adult aggressive dog is much more work than just properly addressing and training a young one.

I had a dog and she gave birth to 6 puppies. Out of all those dogs we gave 4 away, and the mother passed away months after they were born, they weren't drinking milk anymore, they were eating puppy food. One of my dogs started to show some strange behaviors, he's scared of humans. I've never hit my dogs, or scream at them, I feed them 3 times a day, I always keep water for them to drink. One of them is playful, the other one is scared of humans. You can't get close or he'll run, even from me. If I want to pet him, I sit and wait for him to walk up to me, he always has his ears down and his tail down when walking towards me, like if he was scared. I live in a fenced house but we usually let him out and he's not scared of other dogs, even the big ones. Idk why he's scared of humans though, even a toddler which we never allow to pet him. Why is he acting like this? The other dog seems fine, and they have a strong bond, they both like each other.

It is by far so worth the time, money and energy to work with the dog and modifying their behavior so they are happier and safer.
