- When it comes to finding a dog pain killer that works, what about giving your dog gabapentin? Is it a true pain killer and replacement for the more commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain killers like rimadyl? Or is it like tramadol which works well in people but not in dogs?

Gabapentin is a human drug that is used to treat some seizures and nerve related pain. We don't know exactly how gabapentin works, although it appears to reduce the release of excitatory neurotransmitters.
If a pain signal is blocked from reaching the brain then the result will be a reduction in pain.
Gabapentin acts on the nerves themselves unlike some other pain killers like the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs).
Neuropathic pain is essentially pain that is generated by the nerves themselves and results in 2 main conditions. The first of these is known as hyperalgesia which is an increased sensitivity to pain.
The second condition is allodynia and is where something that is not normally painful becomes painful.
The good news is that this pain wind up is reversible, although it can take several months. Our standard pain killers in dogs and cats, the NSAIDs, will help with this. Gabapentin though can also be used to help your dog or cat become pain free faster, or where our non-steroidals are not enough by themselves.
Gabapentin may well also play a useful role in helping keep our pets comfortable after surgery or injury but should probably not be used by itself.
Gabapentin is a very safe drug with few side effects to be concerned about. The most common side effects of gabapentin in dogs and cats are sedation and wobbliness. Some animals may also develop vomiting.
The biggest danger with giving gabapentin is using a human liquid formulation that contains xylitol.

We had my beautiful White German Shepherd dog on Gabapentin, Tramadol, and Metacam because he had bone spurs on his left shoulder. He was limping badly. The ER Vet said we had to amputate that leg without trying anything else first. I said no way and got a second opinion. The other Vet said to try medication first. This cocktail of meds helped with the pain enough that he still enjoyed his daily walks, food, and playing in the backyard. But it only lasted one year before his heart gave out. He also gained a lot of weight without being overfed in this last year. The regular Vet didn't find out that he had a lot of water around the heart even though I told her something was wrong with him and once he fainted at home. Still she didn't find anything. We went to a different Vet and he found the water and sent us to the ER to get the water extracted but it was too late. He died in front of the entrance of the ER and because of Covid restrictions we couldn't get him inside fast enough. It was heartbreaking. He was only 11 years old and the sweetest boy ever.

Me and my dog are on gabapentin.. We have been on it for years now for spinal nerve pain which strangely we both have .... it works very well just 300mg in the evening helps calm her and she sleeps well... So yes it WORKS FOR US.. 💤💤🤗🙏❤️🐶🥰
My 20 year old dog has been on tramadol for 6 years and works the best. He can function on it and acts normal not drugged up.
My poor dog is 15 and has tried everything but this medicine, wish my vet would try it. So far, 2 years on galliprant, rimdyl, gaba, amantadine has done nothing once he turned 13,,hes so full of life, just needs pain help, send wishes to my dog

@@protect_provide8031 Sounds like what they're doing to people as well. Denying pain relief. 2 cases of open heart surgery given nothing but Tylenol. People dying in pain in hospice denied pain meds. They let one woman scream until she died. I've heard all kinds of horror stories. Been a victim of under treatment myself.
@@commonsense5515 yup they are denying everyone cuz they suspect we all are drug addicts and we want the drugs for ourselves ......bringing our dog in for them to see the animal isn't enough it seems .....its like ...do a background check or whatever you gotta do on the owner...rule out no drug prob and then prescribe what it needed! So frustrating .
Gabapentin turned my dog into a wobbly zombie, he just didn’t seem to be in his body, his mind wasn’t in there anymore. So we stopped it.

Literally my dog earlier today. Freaked my husband and I out. Disoriented, panting, got real weird like too clingy weird, and somehow got him to sleep.

Not for me ..however i didn't end up giving him the fill dose because of your comment,thankfully ...i was told to give him 2 capsules twice a day ..I only gave him one capsule twice a day and it worked so well..May be if you cut the dose in half ?
Me and my Caverpoo, Bracken, are very new to this. During the last few weeks Bracken has become very unsteady on her back legs and my vet diagnosed rheumatism. On the second visit, with a different vet, it was felt that in addition there was a problem getting the signal to the brain, ie when the paw was bent Bracken did not make the usual correction. She is on metacam and gabapentin and is due to be seen again in 2 weeks. I have also included Yumove as a supplement, with the vets knowledge. Bracken is 13 plus years old.

I've been out if the state and my 7.5 lbs dog got hurt. The ER vet gave me gabapentin for my small dog. I have to wait to see my vet when I get home. The first dose seemed to help tremendously. She was almost normal, but when I gave her the second dose before bed she was the same as before in the morning and sleeping all day.
I hope she's doing OK now
Could gabapentin be an alternative in arthrosis?? My 13+ dog has a bad case on her right hip. Our vet just give us the alternative to take her to phisioterapy as manegement for her pain, but its really difficult cause we dont have a car and in our town none of those vets specialist do house visits. She has also some chronic kidney failure. I know that gabapentin is used as relief on neuropatic pain, but could be an option for arthrosis??
It works. Just used it last night on a bull dog whinning in some sort of pain. It worked and she went to sleep.
Heart broken, my almost 14 lab, has only been given gaba and rimdyl/galliprant and its done nothing, for two years I've told his vet that it ruins my dog, he wobbles,,cant use his back legs,on it,,even on 100mg.... why aren't they listening

After scanning comments it appears that more people need to realize that brushing your dog's teeth is necessary. Do that daily. That prevents periodontal disease. You will never have to extract teeth if you brush well enough to keep plaque from hardening around the teeth. It's a canine life saver. Easy way to keep your dog healthier. Poor teeth/gums can lead to systemic inflammation and infections. You need to use a toothpaste formulated for dogs. I use Petrodex brand. You can't use toothpaste that's for humans because dogs will swallow some of it. Human toothpaste is made to be rinsed out, and there may be ingredients that are harmful to dogs. Dog toothpaste is made for dogs that don't rinse. But, I use a cup with water to kind of rinse using a toothbrush. Works great. You absolutely have to brush their teeth daily. If you do it a few times a week, that's not enough. Plaque starts forming on teeth within 4 - 12 hours. You wouldn't delay brushing your own teeth a few times a week, right? Same for dogs. Crunchy food does nothing for plaque. Brushing really works. Massage the gum line with a toothbrush and your dog will never have bleeding gums for life. If you do have to do pro cleanings, they'll be a breeze.

It worked so good ! After 30 min he seemed to be really sleepy ..then around 45 min to an hour I had him go outside with me and he was back to his old self (charging at me from across the backyard 🤣) ...the vet had told me to give him 2 pills ..but I only gave him one (based on some of the comments here...i got kinda freaked out) but to my surprise ...I couldn't be happier ..also this is being taken along with the antibiotics he was prescribed, so thankful he can be pain free while he is healing.

Very pleased to see you discuss the Gabapentin and Tramadol in dogs. My 14 yr old Boston has bad arthritis. She is getting meloxicam and started about 5 months ago on 1/2 a Tramadol 50 mg, SID It really does seem to help. With the recent discussion of not being able to get Tramadol, we tried a 100mg Gabapentin SID and saw no improvement. My question is, is Gabapentin as safe and flexible in dogs as it is in people? I understand that people can safely take higher dosages. Thanks again for the great videos!
Gabapentin has a wide dose range and is very safe in dogs. It's important to work with your vet to find a dose regime that works. The big thing with arthritis too is combining lots of different treatment strategies all add up to a much better effect. I've got quite a few videos about arthritis which discuss some of these. Gabapentin does nothing for humans with arthritis so I don't see and I haven't seen it help dogs with arthritis It is a placebo and your dog will have to be euthanized much sooner than if you had a vet that would prescribe low dose opiates along with NSAIDS, herbs like turmeric omegas
I just came here to get info. My older male Dotson rescue was recently percribed gabapentin and I wasn't aware that vets gave this med to animals. It seems to help my baby boy though. Well he's not a baby but he's my baby 🍼🐕💙 he's around 12 or older in human years so he's a old man 😂😂😂 I couldn't ask for a better dog. I realized a couple months after I got him that he had something going on when he moved or did anything at certain times so I made him appointment right away with his vet and they got him in later that day thank God. But this med seemed to help him a lot for pain

After having some teeth pulled my terrier has developed a jolt which has varying degrees of intensity. I've shot many videos of him asleep and eating in my quest for facts that I could pass to my vet as she had no idea what i was on about. Firstly she prescribed Metacam then i returned to say it hadn't done anything so she prescribed Gabapentin which also didn't work but seemed to help him sleep on day one only, so I returned again where she prescribed Metacam again which I havent bothered opening.
He can have a jolt in his head, in his shoulder area, middle area and rear. The rear ones can be so painfull you can see his legs draw in and he expels air like a burp, some rear ones will throw him out of bed like hes been jabbed and he doesn't trust his bed then. When he gets me up around 3:30am which he has everyday since day one after teeth work, he's doing a lot of licking, if I ask him how hes doing he does a lot of licking. Ive videoed his food intake and can see no problems chewing. If I look at seizure video's I can find none like he's behaviour. Just a moment ago he was asleep on the chair when he suddenly left as though I'd jabbed him with a pin.
Sorry to hear about this. It does sound like a very strange problem to have developed after having teeth out and not something I recall ever coming across before. I would have wondered about a pain response too. If you are not getting anywhere with treatment or answers about the videos you've taken (which are a fantastic thing to have done) then you can always consider a second opinion or even referral to a specialist. @@OurPetsHealth A big thanks for the reply, I still haven't had a reply from the vet about my video after three days, but your "very strange problem" gives me the idea that my seriously young vet isn't making it up when she says she has no idea and is guessing.
I searched through your video's to see if you had a seizure one but i couldn't find one. The licking afterwards is so seizure looking that I will pop in the vets later and discuss it with the receptionist and see if my video has been seen by anyone. My vets is a huge practice with no resident vet, so every vet we've seen after the operation has been a different young girl. A second opinion is many miles away. Last night he was out of bed licking at 2:30, 3:15, 4:10 and 5:30 and each time as my watch light lit up the scene he was lying on the floor facing his bed afraid to get back in.

Hi I have a 13 year old Labrador. She has been dealing with arthritis for a few years now and our previous routine was her breakfast in the morning with arthri aid omega oils and then 25ml of metacam with her dinner. One morning I noticed she was expressing more discomfort than usual, that continued for a while then we contacted the vet who suggested we give her the metacam in the morning instead and he also prescribed tramadol (trailieve which I believe is the same thing?) she gets half an 80 mg tablet each at breakfast and again at dinner. She seems to have gotten worse with the tramadol but I can’t be sure. She sleeps after breakfast in the morning and will get barky after dinner. The barking seems to me like pain and I feel as though I can almost hear pain in her breathing sometimes. To ease the barking I pet her, or bring her outside or give her some food for comfort. I’m not sure the exact reason for the barking and if she is ware that she will be comforted when she barks and that is a reason or if the tramadol is contributing to the barking. She still enjoys food and food related games and can walk although her legs are sometimes not the most stable. She also is licking her arms and legs and sometimes chewing causing red sores. She has a few lumps and bumps but the vet doesn’t seem too concerned about them? I’m not sure if they are causing her bother or not. Do you the gabapentin would be a good option for her? And should we discontinue giving her tramadol?

I have a very odd Case that happened with my dog, I’m going to write it here to maybe get someone’s opinion:
I have a 4 year old cogi husky mix female. I love her to death. She got sick and almost died and no one was able to figure out why. She could barely walk, wouldn’t eat, lost so much weight. Would vomit. Finally a vet diagnosed her with Babesiosis, gave her the correct medication and she started to get better. However after that she developed osteoarthritis and at first she was being treated with Metacam, switched to Galiprant(appeared to have to effect after a week) and then now to Previcox with a lot of success, however she did have early signs of kidney damage and were told she needed to take less of the medication and we now give it ever 3 or 4 days along with Antinol. When she takes the medication she starts to be really lively but we wanted to try something else that would be daily and also safe on the kidneys. She really is a special case, it took 3 vets and thousands of dollars in bills.
God love you for taking such good care of her, but has she ever been checked for lime disease? I hope she's better soon, I wish you both well
Tramadol worked best but only had it once. But made him poop a lot. Gaba didn't do anything, rimdorel worked best but made him deadly sick
Yeah, gabapentin made my 13 year old lose complete control of back legs, after two years i keep telling vet its not working...

Do you know if trazadone and gabapentin are safe to take together for dogs and if so what dosage should be given?
It is safe to take together and the dosage depends on your dogs weight. There’s a veterinarian equation to get a dogs certain dosage, I know it because I’m in college for it but it’s hard to explain. You need the medication’s how manly ml for the weight then blah blah use your dogs weight etc
What about gabapentin and tramadol used in combination? In another video, you suggest tramadol has a very small effect in dogs and in this one you suggest gabapentin assists the pain relieving action of other medications.
My dog has developed some kidney disease so I can't use a lot of the standard pain medications for his arthritis, so I want to make sure that the tramadol + gabapentin combination is at least safe and hopefully effective.
it's certainly safe, but when I don't really feel that tramadol offers effective pain relief in dogs. Other options you could talk to your vet about would be amantadine and paracetamol.

Ty for this! I just got home w/ my big guy. The dr prescribed both gabapentin & galliprant for arthritis. My dog is getting old tho, he'll be 14 in October. I'm really hoping these meds will help him feel better. Love my big guy so much

Our Pets Health my vet prescribed it for him along w/ gabapentin. I had never heard of galliprant before & had to come home to look it up. I suppose it's been available here in the US for a short while now? So far, my big guy has been feeling alil better. He's back to patrolling the fence line & he's eating real well too. A bladder stone showed up on his X-rays along w/ the arthritis, so I ordered some special diet along w/ some pot. citrate to help dissolve it.
Is gabapentin is good meds for panosteitis in dogs ?
You'd be better of with an anti-inflammatory first and then adding additional pain killers if they are still needed
I have two really old large dogs...needless to say they are at the point they don't even go on walks anymore....cant get on the couch....and its a low couch with out feet now....they are on this and personally I do not see much benefit or change in their behavior....At all.. I'm not happy about this at all...every day I cry and think about is it time....but I can't..

Hi, my 11 yr old Labrador was diagnosed with L7- S1 spondylosis. For the past one month he can barely walk.. we have been giving him Gabapentin 300 mg, Wysolone 10mg, tarmadol- 50/ 100 mg, neurobion, condrovet . I feel like it's too much of medication. With these tabs, he atleast walks a few steps. I hope it's not adversely affecting him in any other way.. not sure if his fragile body can handle so many medicines. Does this condition improve ?
Unfortunately sometimes it takes multiple medications to make a significant difference to comfort. There is little point in limiting medications given if they are not enough to help your dog. If he is struggling to walk because of pain, then this has the potential to improve with aggressive treatment. If there is a problem with his intervertebral discs (like a slipped disc) then these can improve well with rest + medication but some need surgery. Our dog is so restless through out the day. Feel like he is constantly hungry , barking for more n more food.. what is cause so much restlessness ? Is it the steroids or the painkillers ? How can we make him feel a bit more at ease ?
That is a very painful disease Your dog should be getting opiates...
My dog got gabapenton at the vet because he had some teeth pulled when we picked him up he was whining very very loudly and it was very unusual cry and with like a really really long side but it was very loud to the point where the vet was having to project her voice so we could hear her. LOL she basically explained that she just gave the dog medicine and that he was high right now, my dog definitely was high..as we were exiting the vet he literally almost walked straight into the wall... and on the car ride home he was trying to look out the back window but was too high to remember what he was doing because he kept falling asleep while looking out the window that he would wake up and start crying
(don’t worry the window was close and the dog was safe )

Tramadol works the best although my dogs gotten pretty clever I give it to him because he’s learned that he doesn’t know when he’s going to get his meds so he’s just going to split everything out preemptive strike. While the other dog has no issues swallowing tramadol
Tramadol can taste quite bad which can make it hard to give! Have you checked out my tramadol video (it's here: ua-cam.com/video/BENIQm8D5TM/v-deo.html )? It might have been the after effects of the anesthetic too that made your dog seem high after the dental surgery. It can effect all animals (+ humans!) differently although gabapentin can definitely cause sedation.

That's because it is a placebo because vets just like many doctors don't want to risk going against the pharma cartels That don't make any money off generic opiates anymore so they want you on all this new mostly useless med. Since dogs don't show pain unless it's very severe it's easy for them to use it as a placebo. Shame on vets that push this for any thing other than mild or moderate neuropathic pain not cancer or arthritis!!!! Ask any person with chronic pain what gabapentin does for them and unless it's based in neuropathy it does nothing. So don't tell me it's any different in dogs.
Any advice on vets who have given up on helping an animal? Our vet said he'd try everything for our dogs pain, and after telling him for two years nothings working offers nothing, what is an owner to do?
If it was my dog I would look for another vet
My Jack Russell has been started on 100mi gabapentin every 8 hours. He appears to help but he still can yelp out in pain at times. Not sure why it’s not stopping the pain altogether?
Different pain killers work in different ways and have different "strength" of action. Gabapentin is felt to be best for nerve pain and has no anti-inflammatory action. I mostly use it as a additional pain killer rather than the only one. The dose range is quite wide to so there may also be scope to increase it depending on your dog
@@OurPetsHealth Thank you 🙏🏻 My dog weights around 18lb and he’s on 100mi of gabapentin every 8 hours and he’s on Meloxidyl 1.5mi once a day. He still tends to yelp out in pain at times.
How can you get a pain score from a dog?

My 14 year old Shih Tzu needs a cyst removed from the upper outer part of his Anus. They want prescribe to Meloxicamfor pain and Gabapentin and Clavamox. This concerns me. The dog doesn't do too well with too much meds. He gets the runs like crazy and upset stomach if I give full doses. I'm confused and stressed out.
Can dogs take the same medication gab That is prescribed for humans?
not always, some might have sweetener added which can kill dogs (xylitol is very deadly), and the dose is different too. Your vet will know which forms are safe and how much your dog needs

My dog was prescribed gaba, methocarbamol and carprofen to hopefully help prevent progression of IVDD. I’m afraid to drug my dog.
You shouldnt be giving Gaba with Carprofen together
I give my dog gabapentin three hundred mg a day for his severe arthritis and cancer now it helps
Just took a 3 year old pit for a friend and she tells me his front legs hurt him, I do some research after getting to know this beautiful soul, an I’m sure this male pit is in pain from arthritis, elbow displaysia!! Bless his heart! I’ve never had an animal take to me like this dog has, they usually hate me! Lol! But his behavior, the way he looks at me an my wife!, an the way he carries hiself is really surprising to me! Well mannered, listens, an friendly! i ran out of gabapentin today for my dog he gets 1 capsule every 12hrs to collect new capsules on wednsday my friend gave me 4 capsules that are priscribed to him until i recive capsules from the vet are these safe to give to the dog for now 300mg
You need to be sure they don’t contain any xylitol.

Gabapentin is amazing for the excruciating pain that a dog is in after a rattlesnake bite. Puts them in a comatose state which is what is needed for recovery.
I'm thankful to have never lived in an area where snakes were a huge problem. The very occasional adder bite was all I saw when I was back in the UK and no snakes in NZ!
Thx for that video, very good explanation. My 16 years old Lab has been on rymadil for a month and a half. Just started Garbapentin yesterday. He looks sedated and vomited is food and water. Will keep monitoring. thx again
Pleased you found it helpful. Hope your Lab starts to do better on everything. 16 is a fantastic age! Definitely keep in touch with your vet and be careful giving the rimadyl if the vomiting continues.

my 5 month old aussie was hit by car and survived traumatic brain injury and he had a broken femur!....while in university of georgia vet hospital they gave blue methadone 10mg iv...and thru his stay they gave him 10mg methadone till his surgury for 6 screws and a plate they gave him morphine!...he was able to come home the day after surgury and they sent him home with 100mg gabapentin and 50mg carprofen along with 50mg of trazadone as needed to help him stay calm and sleep!..so far he is doing okay he is walking as much as possible!...
I hope he's back up and running around very soon (but not too soon - need to let the bone heal first!)
@@OurPetsHealth yes he wants to run already so I have to get down and hold him back lol...and its hard to do his range of motion therapy he is starting to grunt so I do as many as I can!...but 4 weeks till he Is fully healed up!!

My dog is suffering from canine distemper. Can I give him gabapentin?

I have already discussed with my vet, he doesn't know anything about gabapentin. What should I do?
I've never worked in an area where distemper has been a concern and have only seen a couple of cases many years ago. I imagine your vet has much more experience with it but if you're not happy with your dogs care you could always get a second opinion. I hope your dog does OK

NONONONONONO. Very dangerous. major risk of GI bleeding and hard on the kidneys. Only NSAID you should give your dog is a vet prescribed NSAID that minimizes these side effects.
I haven't seen a lot improvement using gaba.
are you using it by itself or along with other pain killers. Better in the latter situation but I agree that it doesn't make a huge visible difference in some individuals

We've tried rimdyl, galliprant, adequan, gabapentin, amantadine, all supplements under sun, nothings working :( doctor supposed to call tomorrow, 2 years of HELL for my dog. Shame on vets

so sorry to hear that. It can be frustrating when you don't get your Vet to listen and help find what would work. I've lost three of my dogs because the Vets would not listen. I'm with my dogs 24/7 and know them very well. I know when something's wrong and still, Vet's did nothing. We changed vet several times and it wasn't an isolated incidence. I have a 12.5 year old guy now who has seizures (but controlled with CBD oil and Gabapentin plus supplements) but his arthritis pain is getting worse. Metacam and Tramadol are out because they cause him having seizure. Vet didn't believe it was those meds but since I stopped giving it to him he didn't have another seizure. I don't know what pain med is left to try. I hope you found some help for you poor dog since you posted here.

Gave him kratom which is legal here and its like codeine
He died doped up thanks to kratom wish i had help sooner
@@Moni-ui5bz no he died two months ago try Kratom Tramadol will give seizures that is lying to you yeah apparently veterinarians are awful at pain management for old dogs please be proactive please look for Alternatives CBD is not enough for the dogs we had
