  • When it comes to successfully treating arthritis in dogs and cats, there's far more involved than simply giving them some supplements or chucking them some painkillers every now and then (and it doesn't have to be complicated or expensive!). The fact is that a few simple changes in your pet's lifestyle at home, along with some natural remedies, and pain relief medication can all combine to ensure that your arthritis dog is living as happy and comfortable a life as possible.
Sign up for my FREE arthritis email course - ourpetshealth.com/arthritismi...
A successful dog arthritis treatment plan should involve:
    - Weight management
    - Nutrition
    - Exercise management
    - Environmental modification
    - Supplements
    - Complimentary therapies
    - Pain killing medication
Once you have a treatment plan in place, it's then important to monitor your dog's comfort levels, modify the plan if needed, and then maintain it so that your dog's pain does not return

Dr. Alex, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your channel and these videos! My precious companion is a 13-year-old German Shepherd who has dealt with arthritis well for the past 4 years. Just this past Wednesday he had a flare-up, and candidly, as I type I do not know whether we are at the end of our time together on this earth, but as I search for insights and information, you provide solid information with great, compassionate advice. I'm so grateful to have found you. Your patients and their human companions are very blessed indeed!

thank you for the tips, my dog lived on the streets in Portugal for years and 2 years ago we got her from a shelter, she wasn't in good shape when we got her but over the years it got worse and now she has arthritis. It's just so unfair and terrible to see a dog that hasn't had a good life go through so much pain, just when she found a home, we will be doing anything in our power to relieve her pain and make her life as careless and happy as possible. So again, thank you and please pray for my dog

The stuff flat out is magic for dogs . My 18 year old basset hound was not mobile and I was considering the unthinkable about 1 year ago today . I started him on a high does CBD with THC at a very small dose and NOTHING I had ever used in 40 years has worked near what this stuff works . Now he is back to taking full walks everyday again . Great video, already do most of it. I got my dog a stool to help him jump into the car, though I usually just pick him up. You are right that every step adds up, but I also feel it’s a matter of pride for him to be able to jump in and out on his own.
Biggest take away is the short consistent walks. I take him for a long casual walk every day with frequent car rides and occasional trips to the dog park.

Our 90 lbs American bulldog has had two tplo surgeries and another revision surgery due to infection of the implant. The surgeries did give him his mobility back but he’s starting to show more signs of OA at 7.5 years old. Sleeping more, moving slower and also limping a bit/toe touching on one leg (the one that was done three years ago) We give him cosequin (have been for about 5 years) and have also added green lipped mussel just recently. They do make a big difference. He’s not 100% but he appears to be doing better. And changing his exercise to 3 times a day short walks have also helped.

Hi, our 3 year old rescue dog just got one of her knees done for an ACL tear and the vet said she had a small bit of arthritis in one of her legs since she's young and is a high energy Border collie and Husky mix I can take her on shorter walks and she isn't a big fan of fetch or chasing a ball so that's not a hard thing to cut out even though she loves using her flirt pole to cut and chase I know that's definitely gonna inflame her joints because she often cuts, turns, falls and slams into things chasing it because she has HIGH prey drive but one thing she LOVES is swimming I seen you said no jumping at all what if she's jumping into a pool like the sport Dock diving would that be ok for her if she was running and jumping into the pool or jumping from the edge of the pool since she's landing in the water which should cushion her jump and not do any damage or hard impact but swimming is really good for building muscle, tiring her out, and keeping her joints strong and it allows her to jump and feel more free and happy also if she could jump into the pool is it ok to do for an hour to tire her out even if she cant jump and only is swimming is an hour ok since the water isn't a high impact on joints or is that still to much?

I signed up for your class. I don’t have faith in the vets in my town. My ten yr old German Shepherd started limping out of no where with no previous signs of arthritis. I thought she had hurt her leg. After an X-ray they told me she had arthritis. Gave her Vetprofen and Neurontin. Neither of which has worked. Not that I want to drug her but come on.. stronger meds maybe? I worked as an RN. I think I know how to keep her from becoming totally sedated. She just lays in bed now as it is. I would at least like her to have something at night that actually gave her a restful nights sleep! All they want to do is charge me money so it’s always a vet visit with no advice, no help, no answers other then making another appointment.. no more. This dog is my child! She has been attached to my hip (literally I can not use the bathroom without her following 🙄😆 my vet recommended a total elbow replacement 😳 if I were rich I would (although I would take her to the best surgeon in the world for it) but I am not. I am wondering if you have heard of Nzymes. The stories are remarkable if true. I will be taking your email course but figured I would ask about the best supplements as well. Heya Dr. Alex, what would be the recommended dose per kg for fish oil to give daily for dogs? I was thinking about giving Molly a tin of Sardines or Mackeral once a week for the added oils, especially as she's had the couple of weak nails (still keeping a eye on the worst one), but perhaps a daily fish oil capsule or liquid supplement would be better? Her skin is also on the slightly dryer side too so think it could help?
She's very slim and in shape, but she LOVES playing fetch with a ball with obsession, running, jumping, the whole lot. I did take her a few time previously for fun swims at a hydrotherapy place and (in normal circumstances) I'd love to take her regularly but they are at least a 30 min drive from us and it's £20-30 for 20 minutes swim, so quite expensive for me :(

Well I'm going to tell you what is a big extreme health benefit to your dog I've been giving this to my dog for years. She was going downhill she was older. But now she's pepped back up. And she looks great and she's not overweight. I cut back on her hard dog food and give her a 2 cups of her dog food. Then just like people food I made her bone broth her very own. With no harsh ingredients just vegetables. And then I strained it and kept it in the refrigerator and when I got ready to feed her I would take out a little bit of bone broth like 3/4 of a cup and pour it over her hard dog food. You will see an amazing transformation in your dog. It's amazing it helps your joints her tummy allergies and keeps her looking younger and more vibrant believe it or not. Before she took it she was getting real Gray and she just looked horrible never any energy to do anything but it seems like she's going backwards and feeling younger. You'll notice it after about 3 to 6 months but it starts working immediately

Antinol is an absolutely magical supplement for dogs and cats with arthritis. It works by reducing inflammation in the joint which in turn reduces the pain and increases mobility. Our dogs were so stiff and struggled to stand up after they'd been lying down and this is no longer a problem for them, they are much more active and so much happier. I would highly recommend trying it if you have a pet that suffers from arthritis.

Algae oil has the same omega3 fish oil has. Algae is what makes it, fish have it because they eat algae. It's cleaner too, as fish are full of environmental pollution. And animals were not killed for it and it's much better for environment. :)

If the dog is not supposed to chase after balls and do other fast-move activities, how do you get their heart rates up? Short walks won't exhaust the dog and force their heart and lungs to work properly, and at least in humans that is very beneficial for health.
Furthermore the evidence of Omega-3-fatty acids being beneficial is conflicting, and too much of it can actually have the opposite effect. And it also needs to be supplemented with appropriate amounts of Vitamin E to prevent oxidation.

Swimming is a great low impact exercise. It's all a balancing act and the appropriateness of different forms of exercise will vary with individual.

@@OurPetsHealth Thank you for your reply. My dog more or less hates swimming unless he is very hot, but I might consider getting him a life jacket in hopes that it will make him more eager to swim.
Another thing I once "learned" about joints is that they need a certain level of impact in order to function properly. The person used a comparison to a hard soap that dries up and cracks when not used, but remains smooth if it is used daily. Not sure it was the best analogy but he got his point across. Might there be any merit to this?
I suppose it also depends on age? There might be a sweet spot of how much impact the joints need? And perhaps impact is different than quick movement?

I dunno, sounds complicated to me. Modify their diet, lifestyle, living arrangements, sleeping situation, exercise, play, your home & floors, travel. I mean, I get that it needs to be done, but it's a huge endeavor for a pet owner, basically re-thinking and re-doing literally everything about how they live and a lot about how YOU live. If you have a dog that's active and playful, it's murder trying to minimize damage and deal with ongoing pain....they work against you at every turn, and their discomfort is all the more frustrating.

I understand how you feel but honestly pets are like babies. You need to change and modify your life for them from the get go, they are mammals and feel the same pain as us. I know most of us do the best at can but you really need to determine how much you love your pet and what you're willing to do for their pain
