Check out how the Low Volume cowbell we made turned out on David's channel!
• Making a Low Volume Co...
Last month I drove cross country to hang with THE MAN, Mr. rdavidr. We thought it would be fun to try and make a low volume cymbal as well as a low volume cowbell. So in this first video series, we tear up a perfectly good cowbell and a perfectly good cymbal to see if we can make a low volume version of each. Do we succeed? Well, that's for you to find out.

Stephen drove 9 hours just to USE ME to drill holes in HIS cymbal AND to give me a safety lecture... The first person to count how many holes are in the cymbal will win a sticker from me. Totally worth it, right? 😉 We have more videos coming soon! Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss anything!
Man, that was harsh.
i counted 962 but your finger was in the way for a few of the holes so im probably off by a lot.
986
It got 999 holes but keyholed ain't one! There, I win everything! :D

2 of the best beards in the drumming business in the same video
Justin Foley's beard is no slouch.
Mike portnoy has a pretty nice beard
3:12 every time I have a conversation with someone I havent met before
I am honestly blown away by the sound of the cymbal with the holes. It seems to have the perfect blend of shimmer and darkness with a fast decay. It's almost like you turned a 16" crash into an 18" fast crash. I can't imagine it would last too many gigs before cracking, though.
Running a drill press and breaking bits with no safety glasses on.
wearing gloves while using a drill press is a no-no too...
@@kratanicverses4805 was waiting for a glove to get pulled in
Same with slicing an extension cord with a metal object hoping that the projection circuit takes place and not realizing what happened.... I'm glad I'm sound not band.
YOLO.
Just a small forgotten detail. The whole drilling of the cymbals will not have much effect on a medium cymbal. Notice that all L80 cymbals are thin or very thin. That way, the extra holes can cause an uneven vibration pattern that kills the volume of the cymbal, as it can't resonate well.
1:00 that electroboom. amazing guy!
In my opinion the drilled one has still a really good sound, Didnt expect that. I thought that it will be cracked, when you hit a few times.
Interesting experiment. Love the sound from the "new" cymbal.
The thing is the pitch can change too, it bugs the hell out me if a cymbal isn't pitching with the rest of my cymbals
this one ended up pitched flat...no pun here
Brad Parker I’m happy if there’s just a nice interval between crashes or China’s. If a cymbal sits too far to the right or left I’ll simply pair it with other cymbals. I rarely use more than 3 crashes anyway.
@@Assimilator702 Me too, Rico.
It's a good idea to anneal the cymbal after doing all these holes. Especially with B20 cymbals, as they are extremely brittle and crack easily.
I gig with 15" light hats and man they just sound so good. All the time. Everywhere. In every room. At all volumes. Like dang.
I love the conglomeration between you and David. I follow his channel as well. He's always doing funky interesting things with drums. Nice diy effects cymbal.
Collab of the century
Totally awesome seeing 2 of my favorite YT drummers making videos together
Be careful guys. Long sleeves and a drill press can end badly.
Beards and long hair as well 🤔
Iv been waiting for this. Thank you!
BEST BEARDS IN THE DRUMMING BUSINESS, greetings from Venezuela
Say where?
love the dry banter dynamic :D loved it
I just bought a Sabian B8X and love it. I would like to try The dark series and the LED cymbal also. Great video for someone who is trying to find his sound. Wow so many choice and so little time. Love your videos on new and different products. God Bless. 1 year under my belt and I am so overwhelmed with what you can do to a kit. Amazing.
Sweet video guys!! Really cool seeing you guys in a collaboration! :)
The cymbal sounds pretty nice too, likely a good stacker. :)
All the best gents!! ✌
I liked the sound of the cymbal after the drilling. The drilling of holes made it shimmer more. An interesting sound.
Thanks for making this video. Interesting stuff! Your snare drum sounds really good!
1:08 “I happened by accident” 😂😂😂
Ive been waiting for this colab
The post drilled cymbal sounds rad!
Not just volume reduction, it improved the tone as well.
Awesome collab, gentlemen! Love watching both your channels and looking forward to more content/collabs. Having just bought a set of A Customs it was really hard watching you drill holes in it, but... In the name of SCIENCE... I guess I can over look it. Hahaha
Im literally a guitar player why am i here
So u can help ur drummer friend have quieter cymbals at practice?
You totally nailed this one, it's quiter but still sounds like a real cymbal, not like the low volume lol GREAT VIDEO!
I love seeing you guys together😂
1:22 FART
Had to look for this comment.
@@DragonCrestPC lol
That’s the sound of the chair turning dude..🙄
@@ujwalks479 its called a joke
Too bad you guys don’t live closer. I liked the interaction between you two. I watched the cowbell video as well. Good stuff guys!
COOL! Sounds like a sampled ''crash'' house kinda sound! great with a hybrid kit!
Please make more of this stuff, I want a whole kit frequency reducerade and decibel lowered with all your tips and experiments included in one clip. “The ultimate drum set for small bar gigs”
For drummers that refuse to wear earplugs in practice environments, you get the deal.
classic rdavidr beat on top of that! niceee
That thing sounded great to me! Liked the lower pitch too. And rdavidr is a great channel as well.
For real though, I think y’all made it sound better. Nice clean sound. I’d rock it on my kit for sure.
My favorite drum youtubers, please, more of this
The place is really jumping to the high watt amps
'Til a twenty inch cymbal fell and cut the lamps
LOVE THIS COLLAB
As soon as you said melt the edge of the cymbal, that is the exact scenario that popped in my head 😂 I have had this same experience, but not with cymbals, it was with a saw blade. Lol!
Stephen, I’m hooked on your videos! I just turned 46, have never played drums, but always wanted to learn. I ordered a practice pad and some sticks that arrived today. I hope it’s not too late for me to do this, but I’m going to give it hell trying to learn to play. Hopefully I can get to Nashville soon to watch you play. Keep up the great work.
U.S Infantry HOOAH! Actually, A LOT of the people I work with are in your demographic and older. So you’re def not in the minority and it’s never too late to learn. I think you’re gonna have a blast. Let me know if you have any questions!
U.S Infantry HOOAH!
Welcome to the family. It's never too late to learn. Get stuck in and enjoy !
Tesla Nick, Thanks! I’m picking up a used pearl kit from a friend as soon as Christmas is over.
@@11bravo79
Nice. Time to upset the neighbours !
Tesla Nick luckily my closest neighbors are about a mile away!
Wow the one you guys made sounds great. Much more practical and versatile then the actual real different alloy cymbal. The real ones different allows make it almost too soft, all presence no treble lol. But that splash on the one you made....damn. I think it sounds great.
I like the factory drilled cymbal, you could use it effectively in a jazz ballad pretty effectively
Sounds better. Cool video. Thanks guys.
Cool seeing y’all collaborate
I am literally in the middle of doing this to some old hats right now. Thank you so much. I'm hoping to be starting with the bell and work my way out.
We found that the close to the bell we got the more it killer it. We were just afraid of cracking the bell
@@StephenTaylorDrums I'll let you know how my experiment goes then as I paid £5 so really don't mind I they crack at all. Medium thickness top and bottom hats.
Sounds like a splash now. I like it.
HAHAHA Love the Pat Boone Debbie Boone shirt. (after I saw your video on those I started hearing Debbie Boone’s everywhere)
did RdavidR edit this video, cuz that's his music
eatmarth nope, we each did our own edits. We did use some of his music though. Cause it’s good.
It sounds more like a Gen16 crash cymbal to me. I own both L80 and Gen16. L80 is defiantly having lower volume, but the one you guys made got more "cymbal feels". Great job!
Love that snare sound
tdrum21 yea, I threatened to steal that the entire time I was there. It sounded amazing. And I’m pretty sure that was one he had built.
Didn't mean to leave you out of the love I showed rdavidr Steve! Love the collaboration!!!
This really works!!! I tried the same with a pair of planet z hats but with more and small holes than the cymbal on the vídeo! Takes a lot of time but is a good project and cheapier than a pair of L80s...!!!
I love RdavidR, i found your channel from that colab on his channel today
Glad to have you hanging here with me Aaron!
That actually sounds like these ridiculously expensive frx cymbals. Nice, maybe I'd do that myself once with some old cymbals just to have a decent garage practice setup
It sounds a lot better now!
Love the “Pat Boone, Debbie Boone” shirt!!
Who would have thought a cymbal with lots of holes drilled into it would look so beautiful?
Check out how the Low Volume cowbell we made turned out on David's channel!

Holy crap
*whispers* Dave is better...WAIT WHAT I DIDNT SAY NOTHING
FinnyP515 his. Beard. Is. So. GOOD.
Stephen Taylor, agree
I love how you guys take expensive cymbals and drill a ton of holes in them . Cool project. At least it was already damaged. It doesn't sound super quiet on the video, but definitely "breaks" faster, and sounds different.
crankysports yea, it was already damaged and hasn’t been hit since the night it got damaged. So win win
Stephen Taylor very cool!
That cymbal actually sounds really nice after the holes. I would grab that thing for more money than the Projection Crash without the mods.
I dig it with the holes, it totally lowered the pitch. Sounds better in my opinion,
Mehdi, Stephen and David, all in the same video...nice!
Sounds sweet with the holes.
"playing so hard it started to melt"😂😂😂🗽
oh god why do i like the sound of the one with the holes
Love ya guys
I always wondered why my local guitar centers acoustic set had holes in the cymbals,i finally got the awnswer
I don’t know if you realize how cool it is that you’re hopping to other channels to make content. I’ve seen it done, but I haven’t seen drummers go to another channel and work on what those people do, instead of imparting themselves onto it and leaving their stamp. It’s cool to see you outside of your Nashville zone!
Nathan Lundstrom thanks Nathan! I’m having a lot of fun making new friends and making different bits of content.
It's best to put a flat edge on the drill when drilling brass type metals, it will produce shorter swarf and the drill will not grab the cymbal when coming out the other side of the hole. It also reduces burrs. Just look up Drill Brass.
Bro... I've been waiting
This is mildly interesting but what's more interesting is the fact that this ended up on my recommended
Well it sounds at least 50% quieter. Probably good enough for people in single family homes who don't want to drive their neighbors crazy.
If I had a bunch of cheap used cymbals, a drill press and A-LOT of patience, it would be totally worth it
Lol, A LOT of patience
What a great sounding ride cymbal.

You got a new subscriber. Great channel, im here from rdavidr
PS - the kit you play when you're testing the pre-holed out cymbal sounds great! what mics are you using on the kit? Tom 1 looks like a 57 but I cant make out the rest
Hay man, your boot leg cumble sounds a lot better than the stock one. Loved how this crashes, but it's resonance was reduced, so didn't hang-around. How about adding a few bigger holes?
Lathe the melted part down "if" u wanted it to remain whole...sure it'll change the diameter...but u'll still have a cymbal with a smooth and clean edge
I did this very method to a cracked 16in crash. The closer to the bell does alter the sound alot.
Note: drilling holes will make them weaker. Hence if you're a hard hitter it will fail epicly. 🥁🤘
That thing sounds holy
With my budget I ONLY have cracked and damaged cymbals. Your throwaway ones are the ones I have to buy to use.
I literally had that same thing happen to me at a show! Well, it shorted out some amps too. It’s not that unbelievable
I hope you end up using this holy cymbal in church. Get is? Haha! Great vid man!
3:12 that made me laugh harder than it should have 😂
You know something's about to get tinkered with if rdavidr is in the frame! Awesome colab!
Oh, and I wanna see how you're gonna deny being a gear head now when you can technically be called a cymbal modder! ha, you've trapped yourself with this one mr. Taylor, wave your handkerchief at that boat 'cause it sailed faraway and it ain't returnin'!:D
Strelock lol
¡¡¡Mucha dosis!!! 🤘
yay you used an electroboom clip. :D
i have that projection crash, best crash i owned
Hey David a drummer on FB had a Paiste cymbal with small holes were drilled into the bell of the cymbal. The assumption is Paiste was intentional but we don't know the reason why holes into the bell? I'm thinking, after viewing your cymbal drilling hole video, is that holes in a cymbal reduces volume? That, to me, seems to be the issue with most cymbals is the bell area are too overpowering loud like cowbells.
I love the sound of it after holes. Way better
I did too
Wow you made a Zildjian A finally sound good. Did you sell this already?
That snare sounds killer
Yea, I told him several times I was planning on stealing that thing.
I'd be interested in hearing a regular Hi Hat top cymbal paired with one of these sieve cymbals as the bottom Hi Hat. I bet it would sound good for recording.
1:00 ElectroBoom🧐🧐🧐
Lol
Interesting, the 16” now has the pitch of an 18” and is considerably quieter
Awesome video. didn’t know he lives in Virginia. I live on Newport News
You guys look like brothers ;)
Long lost but now found...
