I'm not sure this is at all relevant to FFXIV, but the first time I had even seen the concept of a paladin was when I was playing FFIV on my Game Boy Advance... Dark Knight Cecil becoming a paladin blew my 10 year old mind

i never played what was FF2 on the SNES in the USA, until much much later - so yeah that is a really cool story FFIV is one of the best - afaik though paladins were in D&D 1st edition
