Never once imagined i'd be kicking off 2020 with new HD footage of live Strapping Young Lad. So glad to see Dev return to this material and seem happy whilst doing so - I hope he's had a blast playing it again.
I'm relatively new to DT having dived in around 2020 or so. I'm 56 and heard his name long ago when I lived in BC but wasn't into the scream at that point. You nailed it. His voice has become much better and refined/controlled since SYL. You can see he's 'grown up' since then also lol. SYL had that raw energy and IDGAF that only ages 20 to 35 can give you depending on your lot in life and childhood etc. He hasn't lost the energy as his live stuff is off the friggin scale. I was too lazy to go and see him with Dream Theatre and Animals as Leaders when they came here. I'm an idiot.
From the tone of some of his recent interviews, he said he's getting tired of being afraid of playing SYL, so he's coming to terms with those songs and he'll probably include some of them in his concerts.
City is the high water mark when it comes to heavy music IMO, tho I know some prefer Alien or even New Black. I love the crazy experimental stuff he's been doing lately but a return to the heavy for heavy's sake in your faceness of SYL, even for a single album, would be more awesome than there are words to describe.

So it kinda put him off working with him. Dev is definitely an Artist's artist, which I like, though I do wish he'd do a one off or something some day!

To all those people hoping that this might mean a SYL reunion, Devin has said on many occasions that he doesn't see it happening EVER. He said that while SYL was always a big hit at festivals, their headlining shows would sometimes only have 50 people in the audience, and that people look back at SYL through "rose-tinted glasses". I think he's only willing to play a few SYL songs NOW (which he said he'd never do) in shows where he's MOSTLY playing non-SYL music. If he did a SYL reunion, he'd have to play nothing but SYL, and based on what I've read over the years, I'm almost positive he will NEVER do that again.
It's great seeing Devin playing this song again, but it seems a little tame compared to SYL's blistering performance of this at 2006 Download festival with the skullet and Gene Hoglan on drums.

Sounds like Dirk isn't using triggers. It's not unusual for the left kick to sound slightly weaker, the right foot is doing the vast majority of the work after all.

Yeahhh, great to see HevyDevy back at it! I've seen him on the Empath tour last year, but found the impact of the heavier songs somewhat lacking. With these artists there's definitely enough bang!
