Gene and Devin writing Oh My Fucking God in 10 minutes while the KoRn guys listen at the door going 'wtf is going on in here..?' is my new favorite story
When I had a radio show, I was lucky enough to interview Gene when SYL played on the Alien tour around 2004, and he was (and still is) the Nicest guy in the business bar none! its always a pleasure to hear him speak. he literally has so many stories he could tell and I have never heard him have a bad word to say about anyone....well.. He did call me a fat bastard at Bloodstock in 2010..., but look at that face.. how can you not love that punum?!
That man changed my complete vision not only of the drumming world but of music in general. Needless to say, he's a great role model and inspiration for me.
Gene is, funnily enough, a Death Metal Drummer that has seemingly been Divinely Guided throughout his life/career, if you know what I mean. Massive Respect, as always, to Gene Hoglan. A certified GOAT drummer, period. Also, speaking of the Human album, shoutout to Sean Reinert (RIP💔). Godspeed, and Goodwill. You are the only Drummer to bring me to tears 🙌 🙏 💗
My dude! Saw them on that tour at Trent Poly, the Notts crowd were nuts & taking the piss, ‘who ate all the pies’ kinda shit and Gene fronted the whole place on the Mike, had us all laughing within seconds. Top bloke, true legend.
I met Gene on symbolic tour in Atlanta. He was so cool and the set was amazing. I loved dark angel. From earlier material he has always been one of my favorite drummers. I had no idea about all he had done up to present. Now I have to go listen to all the albums I didn't catch. This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen!
I love how he speaks so naturally without an excessive amount of hums and youknows. He's very well spoken and tells stories without getting lost in details. The most interesting drummer that has ever lived.
This is a crash course in the life of one of the most talented drummers ever. Great anecdotes, great person. It's a shame that he and Chuck Schuldiner were not as close as we desired but the material they did together, resonantes in our souls for ever!!!!!
Love you Gene, thanks for all you've done (and will continue to do well into your 70s, looking fantastic, does my heart good). Very much looking forward to the future!
What a great interview. He's such a cool guy. Can't wait for another project with him behind the kit. Maybe another Galaktikon? All the best to you Gene!
Man, he looks good. Most people who lose a lot of weight wind up looking much older. Gene’s done very well. Makes me happy his heart didn’t wind up giving out.
I met Gene some ten years back. It's amazing how you listen to him play for years and you kinda start seeing him as some sort of a god or something, then you meet him and he's just an extremely talented, kind-hearted and humble dude. Also he was way bigger back then. Now he looks to be in the best shape of his life and that if something makes me happy. He'll probably keep going well into his nineties.
Can confirm. Met him sitting next to Devin Townsend before a SYL show during "City" aera and I was so stoked and the only thing I was able to say, was: "Hi Gene, hi devin, how are you doing?" and they were looking at me, completely open hearted (at least it felt like that) and were like "Good. Thank you. How are you?" but in a friendly way? And I wasn't prepared and didn't know what to say. LOL. Fanboy mode ON. 😀
He reminds me a lot of some other musicians that just want to grow and grow. Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo, etc. Such a killer dude and I think the phrase "I am training for my 70's" is a great way to look at personal health.
Damn, you're in better shape than when I met you 25 years ago with Death! Power to ya! I am the exact same age and my riffs rip harder than ever and will continue to do so for another two or three decades too.
He's the best metal drummer ever. This guy has feeling and technique when he's playing. It's very rare when a drummer has those 2 qualities at the same time. He's the best. Btw Opeth needs a new drummer, it's your time there Gene.
I applaud all your accomplishments I remember back to those days of Slayer and Savage Grace you and your sister never realizing your age and your future I think it was 35 years ago someone stole the dark angel hat you gave me great interview keep up the good work
As an Opeth fan, I love how Gene still remembers the title of the song and even the duration of the song to this day. Oh hey, Gene. Opeth just left their drummer again!
Just in the studio while slayer record their first album !! saying it like it's nothing . So jealous , Gene was sick when I saw him playing with Fear Factory in London. He has to be in my Top ten metal drummers list
I guess I am rare in the fact that if I hear Gene Hoglan's name, the first album that comes to mind is Omega Wave by Forbidden. It might just be because I always thought that out of all the thrash metal vocalists, Russ Anderson was the one who stood out the most for sheer range, and ability. I really do LOVE that album, though, and it's probably the best vocal work Russ ever laid down, and Gene just had a flavor and tone on it that was, as with most of his work, fucking perfect.
Demonic is one of the best Testament albums. Obviously Gene's SYL stuff is awesome as well. Infinity might be my favorite of the albums mentioned here. Wish the Old Man's Child album he was on was mentioned here.
he is so soft spoken, and so good to see him fit and in shape, and man oh man the guy is a force of nature behind the drum set, rumor has it the metronome is set to Gene Hoglan ha ha what I liked best about Testament was that they were Thrash and not Death Metal, there is already plenty of blast beat growl lyrics death metal bands, we don't need yet another one
That’s why Gene is the best drummer on the planet. Every project/band never had his tracks/foot prints, from one band to the next. Creativity is key in his career.

Well-spoken, chilled out, incredibly knowledgable and god tier metal drummer. Could listen to this man talk drums and music all day.
100%
I totally agree. He seems super cool. I've heard his drumming throughout the years and it's cool to hear him talk.
Guy is the king. So glad I got to meet him around 2007 at a Misery Signals show. So happy to see him looking so healthy and happy, still!
@@dovkushnir7808 the “Gene Slimmons” Nick name made me laugh!!!! I’m definitely going to look into those super foods he talks about and recommends.
The drive on Mechanize is brutal.
I can listen to Uncle Gene talking about music and drums for hours. Always seems like the best dude ever!
he's on twitch
@Dinis Campos lol
He’s looking in so much better shape than he used to!
Totally. I am happy for him. He has to feel better.
Such a laid back guy. Opeth be like "hey, we sent our drummer home for reasons, can you play?", and he's like "sure thing, lol".
That Dethklok album is a masterpiece, that's wild how quickly they wrote the songs 😆🖤🤘

Gene's drumming on Infinity is some of my favourite drumming of all time. So different for him, really adds to the ecstatic sound of the record
This is fascinating, not just his work, but the metal history he’s sharing. I would’ve loved to have seen him playing with Opeth.
Wow the Opeth story is incredible! What a great drummer and person.
That man changed my complete vision not only of the drumming world but of music in general. Needless to say, he's a great role model and inspiration for me.
36:57 And that's why he's the Atomic Clock. So much diversity of style yet all distinctively Gene. 🤘

Gene Hoglan is a great guy. I met him in Glasgow in 1989 when Dark Angel supported Nuclear Assault.
What a show that must of been, NA were at their absolute peak in 1989!
@@henrywalton5967 Imagine seeing those 2 play together the year Leave Scars and Handle With Care came out, sheeesh

His love for Infinity make me very happy.
A legend, watch him on Twitch most days Mon-Fri every week. Always a good time and killer stories.

Along with Mike Portnoy i think
This is a crash course in the life of one of the most talented drummers ever. Great anecdotes, great person. It's a shame that he and Chuck Schuldiner were not as close as we desired but the material they did together, resonantes in our souls for ever!!!!!
I know he's not really happy with the Fear Factory guys but he should have spoken about Mechanize
What a fucking legend this guy is, it's great to see how healthy he is too. Very much looking forward to seeing what he does in the future
Love you Gene, thanks for all you've done (and will continue to do well into your 70s, looking fantastic, does my heart good). Very much looking forward to the future!

I stop doing whatever I was doing a get totally immerse on Gene's story telling.
Man, he looks good. Most people who lose a lot of weight wind up looking much older. Gene’s done very well. Makes me happy his heart didn’t wind up giving out.
I thought I was the only one who noticed.
Gene lost so much weight, he used to be so fucking huge lol
He looks way better now
One of the best drummers in metal. Would love to hear his thoughts on Fear Factory's Mechanize.
Fascinating insight and perspective from a true legend.

Met him MULTIPLE times ALWAYS completely chill just wants hang out and smoke ALL the weed. Yours if you're holding ya know life is hard on the road.
The Atomic Clock himself. Love his drumming! Thank yall!
The ending to this interview was so wholesome, like Gene please keep double kicking life until you're 90 years old. You're such a badass.
Man, I love this dude. I could listen to this dude talk about anything. I’m happy that I got into drumming because this guy.
So mature and well spoken and intelligent!
huge respect and love for the legend! what a time to be alive!
Love this format and hope there will be more!
Probably the most relaxed metal drummer out there...
Technical one of the best, go Gene!
Man I wished he talked about Tenet. That's probably one of my favorite albums of his.
Not So Mean Gene!!! One of my heroes. Truly, one of the greats. I have the goddamn t-shirt!
I did not know that Gene was the original riff writer on the Death Angel makes sense to me now.. Sounds so good..❤❤
Damn, I love those guitars on tdnh! Didn't realize you did so much for dark angel. I really do love that album tho. Punishing.
Hogland…..is legend my favorite drummer
Holy crap. Dude looks good. 👌 what a change.
Nicest guy I ever met in metal. RIP Jim Durkin.
This was such a great watch!
His drumming on Individual thought pattern is amazing
Testament's Demonic... since 25 years still be one of my favorite drums parts.
(Edit) Jun-Jjun intro... just hear this of u don't know...
You just gotta love Gene!
The Atomic Clock in the flesh. Talk about an underrated drummer. 🤘🤘🤘
Love love love love this guy! I wish him all the best
Love Gene, great musician and ambassador to music in general.
Dethalbum II is an especially amazing record
Brilliant video. Thanks! 💪🏼

Gene is the perfect pick for the upcoming Pantera tour.

Fortunate to have met this dude. He is every bit as cool in real life.

He is the best dummer your right Testament - Titans Of Creation is his best performance i think
I actually saw him fill in for Martin Lopez shortly after Ghost Reveries came out. He was perfect.
@@johnsnider2956 ah man, that must've been sick!
Would be cool.
Feeling and technique go hand-and-hand lol, what??
Gene is looking great!
This guy is a total pro, who on earth learns a opeth live set in one night!
jfc, can we just take a minute here for how good gene looks atm :p what a blowout tbh. hes in the best shape hes been since i can remember tbh x
Well. That was amazing.

Gene admits his most challenging song was Laser Cannon Deth Sentence.... LOOL ! Dethklok rules !
Really wish Dev and Gene would work together again
He's so mellow ...I love it
Awesome!
29:49 Those boots man... that's the real hardcore shit.
Best drummer hands down
Such a sweet soul. Dude is super loyal as well. If there were more Gene Hoglans in the world,.....there would be more death metal.
I love this guy!
As an Opeth fan, I love how Gene still remembers the title of the song and even the duration of the song to this day.
Oh hey, Gene. Opeth just left their drummer again!

The first time I
Ever heard of glen hogan was from a Cleveland band called Pitch Black forecast.
I had no idea he played with Opeth. 😱
Imagining learning 3-4 Opeth songs in a 4 hour span on drums is stressing me out. That's just remarkable.
I absolutely love this master of beautiful ball crushing drums and percussion.

Absolute legend
Straight up legend
The man. The legend.
I always wonder if it’s “Gene” or Eugene or just Gene. He’s got rhythm in his genes
I would give anything to jam with Gene
Darkness Descends, Individual Thought Patterns and City are three of the best metal albums ever.
That's a great attitude Gene!
Killer dude right there!
Demonic is one of the best Testament albums. Obviously Gene's SYL stuff is awesome as well. Infinity might be my favorite of the albums mentioned here. Wish the Old Man's Child album he was on was mentioned here.
Love this guy...
The most iconic drummer in all of heavy metal.
Inspirational
Drum Doctors...man, I haven't heard that name in about 20 years
Holy shit he's looking good these days
Gene, your a fucking beast, my favourite drummer tbh, strappin young lad shows genes beastliest beast ness
he is so soft spoken, and so good to see him fit and in shape, and man oh man the guy is a force of nature behind the drum set, rumor has it the metronome is set to Gene Hoglan ha ha

Absolute legend and the nicest guy. So glad he has lost so much weight and gotten healthy as well.
Wow
Still think Leave Scars is one of their best I can never decide which is better Leave Scars or Time Does Not Heal.
That’s why Gene is the best drummer on the planet. Every project/band never had his tracks/foot prints, from one band to the next. Creativity is key in his career.
Demonic is in my top 5 favorite Testament albums.
Where’d the rest of him go?
