Not really, English is not a colonial language if you are a native speaker... Spanish is not a colonial language but an Indian one, if you are a Mexican 75% Indian blood, and you speak only a language: Spanish becomes an Indian language because your are an Indian. Of course you can call it "Latino" to soften the effect, but nothing changes

I suggest you look further into Afrikaans as a language or think about it in a manner similar to English with AAVE. Afrikaans has its own set of dialects, but the one used predominantly by black South Africans is looked down upon and not "pure" like the dialect of the white people, much like how the American black accent is taught to be improper in the US. It excludes and questions the validity of generations of black culture. Because the population of South Africa is mostly black, this language spoken previously by white supremacists creates an elitist and exclusive divide between the white and black population. In that regard, the use of English is a very reasonable option.

    • @karenr8539
      @karenr8539 5 років тому +202

@@DaddyAZTL, there's three basic racial groups in South Africa; Blacks (Negroid), Whites (Caucasian) and Coloured (Capoid). So in order to explain Capoid, go back to between 4,000-6000 years ago, the time of the African diaspora, this refers to the Negroid diaspora from the general area of the Congo today. South of the Sahara runs an arbitrary line, called the Bantu line (the primary Negroid people). North and south of the Bantu line people were different, physically (racially) and culturally i.e. north of the Bantu line wealth was measured in camels, south thereof in cattle etc. So in short lets stick to the diaspora south of the Bantu line, people moved roughly from the west to the east across Africa and therefrom south, obviously the actual migration routes were slightly more complex than that. Nonetheless, the Negroid people moved into the territory of the Capoid people (southern African people who occupied the territory roughly up to Kenya, they used to be the dominant southern African people). The African diaspora has resulted in these people being today only still present at the southern tip of Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and southern Angola). Today knows as the KhoiSan people, the Khoekhoen (KhoiKhoi) and San (Bushman) are the only living members of the Capoid race. Remnants of Capoid are still present among the Hadza of Tanzania etc, but as I explained they were basically replaced by the Bantu people during the African diaspora.
So in South Africa there's a group called the Coloureds, they include a number of 'people', including the KhoiSan (both groups and their various tribes), it also includes the Malay people brought here as slaves during the Colonial Period and prior to 1840, with the start of workers unions and segregated residential areas etc, some people at least mixed, many of whom, both the former slaves and these generally mixed groups mixed primarily with the indigenous people, i.e. the KhoiSan. So to a more or lesser degree Coloured people are closer connected to the original people of the land, the KhoiSan, even though all would not regard themselves as KhoiSan directly. Other groups will also have KhoiSan influence because of the diaspora, for ex. the Xhosa, but here they were incorporated (sometimes by force and sometimes by choice into the Xhosa community, so in other words they became part of the Xhosa, so Black).
Coloured is not mixed race, Black and White do not make you Coloured; Negroid and Caucasian equals Mixed Race not Capoid or Coloured. Coloured is an identified cultural group, strongly vested in the ways and heritage of the original inhabitants of the land, prior to the arrival of the Negroids and the Caucasians. Coloureds are an officially recognized minority with their numbers being fractionally higher than the numbers of the Whites.
Whites are roughly half-half, I would say slightly less Afrikaans speakers (or the Boers) than English first language speakers, but when it comes to the Coloureds the scales shift and yes, the majority are Afrikaans first language. Afrikaans is one language, but many will say that there are slight dialectical differences.
Many in South Africa will proudly call themselves Coloured, a distinct broader cultural group that include many specific groups, such as the Khoe and San tribes and the Cape Malay. Coloureds (sometimes referred to as Brown, especially in the Western Cape) are not Black, they're not White and they are not mixed race, thus not to be confused with POCs, the now very fashionable term from the West. A POC is not a Coloured in South Africa.

Wisest comment here - this logic of advocating for equality by taking away advantages instead of bringing those advantages to others. Instead of uplifting the poor, we want to punish the rich. The mindset of "I can't have it, so nobody else should" is ridiculous. If we want equality, should we all have 2 homes and 3 cars, or should we all live on the street? Afrikaners (and British) being able to study in their own language is a problem, but the way to fix it is not to take that benefit away, but rather give the same benefit to others. I've seen schools in the MENA region teach in English, French, Spanish, German, Hindi, Chinese, etc. while the official language is usually Arabic. Many European schools teach 3-5 languages!

This video is EXTREMELY inaccurate and biased. The real reason why Afrikaans was discontinued in South African universities is not a racist move. It was removed because it does not have the same international standing or reach such as English. Afrikaans is the home language of approximately 12% of the population. Black South Africans who make up the majority of the country mostly speak Zulu and xhosa as their home languages but in order to study they have to do so in their second language which is English. That being said the majority of South Africans are excluded by universities who have an Afrikaans language policy. Afrikaans people do understand English so it is only fair that all universities be in English in order for all South Africans to have an equal opportunity to study.

This is also true for high-schools. Many States in the world have multiple levels of language-switching in the education system. The majority of Member States of the European Union use more than one language to teach at elementary, high-school, and university level.

There are over seven million native Afrikaans speakers in South Africa. The majority of them are not white. To dismiss the language as a relic of apartheid and racism is just ignorant. Its history stretches back 350 years and it has just as much right to be used as any language. Now if you pay for a university course in English and it is being taught either partly or fully in Afrikaans that's a problem, but to demand the banning of all instruction in that language for no other reason than race hatred or revenge is just racist and counter productive.

Zulu and Xosa don't have a history of literature so whereas teaching in Afrikaans preserves the history and literature - as it stems from Dutch, you would have to intentionally create new material in Zulu and Xosa from ground 0. So it's definitely possible - just don't know if anyone cares because there's not really any literary material and history to preserve, as they were historically purely languages of the tongue.

The English didn't actually do much against the Native Americans. In fact they were attempting to create a Native American Nation which was a contributing cause of the US invasion of Canada in th war of 1812 (which should really be given a proper name)
You're also ignoring the fact that the British are responsible for 100 years of relative peace ending in 1914 with the outbreak of WW1.
They outlawed slavery in 1833, they also set up the West Africa Squadron which ended the atlantic slave trade and freed 150,000 slaves.
They also established the first free colony for freed slaves and provided protection to them from renslavement.
They 'encouraged' African rulers to stop enslaving minorities to trade as slaves.
They ended the Arab Slave trade (which had lasted 1000+ years and has restarted again)
They along with Portugal the USA and several other European Nations in the Med ended the Barbary Slave trade.
They Ended the Indian Slave trade.
They destroyed the Thuggee who were responsible for over 2 million murders in India.
They are the reason India is a united nation rather than fractured like Europe is with multiple nations etc.
And lastly but definitely not least they encouraged other European powers to abandon slavery often by force and by disrupting trade of slaves as previously mentioned.
If any nation in the history of the world has don't more to ends slavery it's Britain.

Getting rid of english in the education system is useless. Most people already speak that language and it would pretty much be counter productive because you would have multiple generations speaking one language and then a whole new generation speaking a totally different language. Also that would be a lot of money just to try and switch the whole. I know that the british did some really horrible things during colonization. Nobody is arguing that, but in order for a country to move forward i think there are waayyy more important problems than changing a language; Matter of fact, it would actuallu create more problems like not being able to understand each other. You will have kids speaking a whole other language than their parents and now while their parents are working and trying to supply for their families, your forcing them to take up time learning to speak a whole other language, which is really just useless and counter productive.

The purpose of removing Afrikaans from the university is because of several valid reasons:
    • Textbooks are written in English not in Afrikaans .
    • English is the main medium of instruction in media and government.
    • English is universally spoken so it's an incentive for all learners to study in English and thus have opportunities across the globe.

German students, who make up around 20% of the total number of students at my university, hapily take the compulsory Dutch language course and most of them can speak Dutch fluently after a few months. It kind of makes sense that the Masters are in English because of international competitance. Though the level of English in the classes given isn't always the best... YES, it's fine that they are given the right to do so, but the problem lies with fact that, now students that are not Afrikaans are being forced to be taught in English and Afrikaans only. We can't be taught in our home language and the ones that do, are usually not up to par in terms of school facilities and much so. So basically most schools owned by the government which aren't in the townships only offer to teach in English or Afrikaans, and the Afrikaans learners have the advantage of being taught literally every subject in their home language , whereas we'd have to learn English first then get taught in English at the same time, being forced to learn Afrikaans.
I don't think that's fair enough for us black learners, but I'm also not suggesting the removal of another language for the benefit of others.

There is not point the country changing its teaching language because of foreigners, or people who wants to change the country policy because of their own joy. When Indonesia was free from Dutch after WW2, the use of Dutch was banned "softly and gradually" until it totally vanished in 70's. No body speaks Dutch now in Indonesia, not merely because Dutch is a colonial language, but it's mostly because it is not "promosing" for better future.

So please take down the European infrastructure, European English language you don’t have problem with, European architecture and the European political system you enjoy today. Yes, apartheid wasn’t good. Racism isn’t good, but this anti-Afrikaner and anti white ideology is ridiculous

I think it's unfair for some people to be learning in their home language at tetiary institutions while some other don't. Approximately 12% of people speak Afrikaans what about the rest, the other 10 South African languages, its very unfair that the vast majority of South Africans who are taught in English which is their second language have to be taught in English. While Afrikaans speakers have learnt everything in Afrikaans: Maths, Science and Biology in thier mother mother tougue while others can't. Even in the work place some employees are only able to speak in afrikaans and work in Afrikaans as if other languages don't exist. Some of you might say that "Why don't people strike for thier own languages to be taught" well thats simply impossible, imagine if everyone was taught their own language that would create chaos and divide. English is a universally known language and can be used by people across the from various background extending across the globe. Afrikaans people are not special to get thier own language taught. We also have our own home languages which have own rich heritage and culture. And these reasons are not based on my feelings on the apartheid era because i was not born yet. Also for the Afrikaans speakers out there, it does not mean your language will fade or die I think Afrikaans is a beautiful Language that is rich in complexity and vibrancy i think the same for the every language, but I will not perpertuate inequality.

"chaos and divide" you can't even speak the language yourself. don't you see there already is chaos and division? your brain is so clouded that you wrote a whole chapter about getting kids to not learn in their mother tongue.

Don't be proud of us plz... we are a very divided nation which was becoz of Apartheid. An afrikaanns word for "Apartness", we faced many difficult things as blacks. Apartheid ended just 25 years ago, the issue today is tha white ppl haven't changed. There r still many racists out here, they r still privileged to be white.
Black south africans today r still affected by apartheud we r still hurting understandebly so, it's only been 25 years.
We speak our languages all of us even the white ppl do also but in school we as blacks are taught in English whilst White ppl in Afrikaans. In University however we r all taught in english however they want to change that, they wasnt their language to be taught. We are all equal we are not vulgar we simply want equality. I and a white person should be taught in english isn't that fair 🤷🏽‍♂️.
