  • So far this year the cows have been incredibly docile. The mothers normally let me approach a newborn without fuss. I've gotten a little careless and let my guard down. I wasn't paying attention here and about got run over.

and that's why we run Herefords, they don't get aggressive like that.

+Farmall 560 diesel I don't know exactly what she is but it's likely she has Hereford in her. She's the first one this year to give me any problem.

LOL. A new momma will stomp your guts out if she gets a chance. I've taken to using a ring feeder - setting it over the calf with a tractor and then doing the tagging/banding inside. Just gotta make sure and have down pressure on the feeder so the momma can't lift it up.

My dad ended up in the hospital back in 1989 due to a cow. I was only 7 but what he had told me was he went to check the herd and thought he was tending to right calf, but identified it with the wrong mother. The actual mother sneaked up on him and ran him over and turned around and did it again, and the second blow is what knocked him out. When he woke up again he said he heard them grazing in the distance and knew it was safe to get up and try to drive the tractor back home. My mom took him to the hospital and he was in there for a couple of days and they had to drain fluid from his leg where she stepped on him. When he was completely healed up he just went back like nothing happened, except he did carry some buckshot with him for protection. He said she tried it again and he blistered her behind with buckshot, hence her name that day became "Buckshot". After that day she found out who was the real boss and my dad said she learned her lesson. He learned his lesson too, not to turn his back on any of those cows again.

My granddad raised beef cows for decades. He always told us to never get between a cow and her calf. If you keep the calf between you and her they are a lot less prone to charge you. Always worked for me but never turn your back on them either.

+Terry Presnal Thanks for the comment! I normally know better but this year's mommas have been very tolerant. I took it for granted and wasn't paying good enough attention
