    It is interesting that such a simple fixture as a Miller’s knot can evolve into so many variations. I learned one method from Grandpa, another from Dad, and a third from a neighbor when bagging grain for hog feed.
    Sadly so much of our history and heritage is being lost due to “improvements”. Grandpa helped to pass many of the past ways down to my brother and I.
    Your presentation is the best that I have seen so far. You actually use a bag, which does make the learning easier. Adding the draw loop is a good feature that I was not taught. Teach any kid that will put his smart phone in his pocket to learn something new.

      I invented a version that is quick release, pull the tag end and it comes undone and would you believe its exactly like shown here

      @@redrustyhill2 ah, re-invented. We used one that tug the opposite way and it undoes itself.

    THANK YOU!
    I once learned, and then forgot, this knot working in a farm supply store in Akron Ohio (1984). Your video was the only one on UA-cam that gave the same instructions from my job. Perfectly useful. Thanks again.

    Super late on this, but thanks so much! I tied off open bags of food with a variation on this but it was a pint to get the cord between the wraps and it wasn't slipped. This is valuable instruction, terrific!

    I was taught the Bag knot when I was about 10 years old, my job was riding on the combine while we were threshing oats the combine would fill one bag and then the alternate bag and when the bag was full my job was to tie the bag the way I did it was place the cord or twine under my thumb of my left hand with my hand around the neck of the bag the middle of the twine would go over my left hand ring finger around the bag back up under the ends of my fingers around one more time and up through the loop that was formed by my ring finger I did this in 1,2,3, moves once up through the loop and my ring finger you pull it tight I can this in about two seconds.
    I am now 74 years old and it comes back to me, second nature without thinking about it

    Will this provide a water tight seal for using a different bag and string? How does this method compares using a zip tie?

    I do mine slightly different... Instead of going over the loop that you created going round you fingers I go through the bottom of the loop and pull it all through...
    Pull it very tight and to undo I only have to unwind it.

    My Grandfather was raised on a farm in Corry, PA. He showed me how to cut baling twine by just using your hand. Have you ever seen that done?

    • @PennsylvaniaFarming
      @PennsylvaniaFarming  6 років тому

      +Rdrake1413 whoa that sounds like a useful skill. I never heard of that. I did have an electronic instructor strip wire with his finger nail.

    • @Rdrake1413
      @Rdrake1413 6 років тому +1

      I have never tried it with the new plastic twine. Grandpa used hemp twine. I have some plastic baler twine in the barn will have to try and see if it will work. It basically uses friction to break the twine. He would wrap the twine around his hand and loop the twine back under the loop around his hand with his other hand he would quickly pull down on the other end and the friction where the pieces of twine cross would break it.

    • @Skashoon
      @Skashoon 2 роки тому

      @@Rdrake1413 That plastic twine used these days is tougher than woodpecker lips! But, I want to try it. I’ll keep my knife handy in case it doesn’t break and cuts off my circulation. Thanks!

      Thanks for the share. My father in law bagged thousands of potato sacks over the years and had a permanently mangled little finger to prove it. He had a similar technique only he would run the twine between his little and 4th , finger leaving a 3-4" tail. The first wrap would go over the tail, the second wrap would cross over the first wrap, then feed the bite through the finger loupe from the bottom, then cinch. His people came to Canada from Scotland over 100 years ago.
