It always gets me how right when Tolkien passed away his lotr books were becoming popular culture from the late 60s to the end of the 70s. Then the heat died down until Jacksons films were released, bringing middle earth back to the public consciousness. This reemergence in his books seem to be with us now for awhile. These 2 periods of frodo lives fandom is impressive. These books are definitely classics and will be with such works as Frankenstein, Dracula, Jackyll and Mr Hyde. The influence Tolkein has had on all different types of media, entertainment, education is just too numerous. The public consciousness it seems is forever engraved with Tolkiens works and influences.
" He never became a celebrity" . I would say there is a revival of him these days. As humanity's consciousness in general raised, now it is at the level to understand his books in a deep and profound way that possibly was not when he was alive. Tolkien is very much is celebrity now! His books will be cherished for a very long time...he is a legend and a visionary of what the human soul can achieve, from the wisdom of Elves to the courage of Hobbits.
It was the movies that got me to read Tolkien's fantasy novels, but it was reading a biography of Tolkien that made me interested in reading the stories he used as sources for Middle-Earth, and want to delve into his writings and theories regarding mythology and folklore such as his translation of Beowulf.
Tolkien insisted his name was from German "tollkuehn", foolhardy. There is a view (backed up by research in present day Poland) that it's actually Tolkin, an interpreter, found in modern Germanic languages but derived from Old Slav "tolk". Edit: yes the doc is annoying
I read the sirmarillion and then the hobbit and then the lord of the rings and I enjoyed it and Even the children of hurin and beren and luthien both edited by professor tolkien third eldest and youngest son is Mr Christopher tolkien
This socio-psycho 'realism' is a nice bit of myopia. Plenty of wider, more multi-applicable, grounded avenues via which to discover J.R.R.T. and his creations.
No. The magic ring as the central focus of an epic tale comes from Norse mythology... The Volsunga Saga and The Nibelungenlied both of which were well known and studied by JRRT. It is from them that Tolkien drew the ring...as well as many of the names, places and concepts he used on LOTR. His stated goal was to create an Anglo-Saxon mythology similar to that possessed by the Welch, Norse, Celts, et al.

“Reuel” (rhymes with “fuel”) - not Raul (Rah - ool)
Yes, and "Tolkien" is pronounced "toll-keen." The narrator is a twit.

I thought Reuel was pronounced "royal".

It's a shame that Tolkien's work and European culture is being destroyed. Tolkien would be turning in his grave.
