Good old Sam. He simply says 'I sailed here, then I sailed there,' while showing how he fearlessly takes a small boat, alone, anywhere in the world, across any ocean. He faces ridiculous challenges that would result in a drama-filled 'I quit' video from any other creator. Whatever it is, he just works it out. He even rejects telling us how much he likes drinking that soylent green looking stuff everyone pushes. Give the man a like! Comment! Subscribe!
Socrates said that he is Rich who is content with the least because the least is the essence of nature. So Sam you are content with everything you travel with on board the pickle. That shows what a well-balanced person you are and how much you appreciate the world. Fairwinds son !
Sam!! You are a sailing hero. Heads up, for the wind noise, try a high pass filter. Start at 60hz and sweep up until the wind is gone. (Or mostly gone)
I placed several soft shackles loosely along the boom (my mainsail has slugs so under the foot of the sail) and run the leech reef lines along the boom through the soft shackles. This keeps them from hanging loose. I have two small jam cleats on the boom near the gooseneck that I loosely coil and hook the mast end of the leech lines to when not in use. This keeps them near the boom and out of the way. Works for me.

Why not thread some small stuff through your lee cloth below that grommet, up thru the grommet, and back around. Maybe a three inch spread across the cloth under the grommet to distribute the load. A stitch in time saves nine.
Sam, you should get a remote for your tiller pilot. I have a Raymarine ST2000 and I have just installed a remote to it via seatalk. Works perfect and as a solo sailor sailing in Denmark and Sweden especially in the Winter it is priceless for me!
I sail out of St. Martin. . .and every island is a check in check out. Soul crushing is exactly true, not to mention a huge time suck for people on vacation. . . .I have an electric bike and always wondered if one of those super powerful car charging/ Jumping boxes (very light and small), might be a good solution for inconsistent power readings on your Scooter. . .Might be worth a jury rig. . .
I ran my slab reefing lines set to the correct length for each reef point along the boom with a small block fixed to the boom. So when the main was at full hoist the reefing lines were also at full hoist. When the sail was reefed or when the sail was put away for the day I just tucked the excess lines into the folded sail. Hope that makes sense. Love your videos. Love from Rhode Island, Heidi
I've been watching your improvised yellow pine "taff rail" (I think it's called) from North Carolina age gracefully and now it fits right in with the Pickle's ambiance. Another great show, thanks Sam.
I’ve been doing the same thing! I was dubious about the selection of untreated lumber but then I realized I know NOTHING, except I do know it would already be rotting in my back yard.

There are several model of wired remote controls for auto helms. eBay price varies from $100 to $400. Money very well spent in my experience. Very nice to have even when you are up on the deck. The connectors are not super available and expensive so I went with XLR microphone connectors which are inexpensive, available everywhere and more robust anyway.
I was thinking about remote-controlled auto helms, too. It doesn't have to be fancy, just more usable. Wireless control is fancier, but still needs power.
I read as a kid, the story of a young man who sailed around the world with a cat in vessel about your size. It has been a fantasy of mine to sail in a small vessel around the Straight of Magellan since then. Im 60 now..this is as close as i get
Sounds like you read about Robin Graham, “the boy who sailed around the world” in his vessel(s) “Dove” back in the late 60s/early 70s. I read the book in 5th grade. Cool story. I think he first became famous through National Geographic coverage of his voyage.
@bradzeigler I first read about it in readers digest. And somewhere I got a hold of the paperback. For certain it was pre 1979. I am 60 this year. About 10 years ago, post divorce and after kids grown, I had made a plan, a vision quest so to speak, that included working at missionary friends works all the way down into South America, and then somehow working on some vessel that would have me go through the straight of Magellan in the dead of winter and then head to South Africa. God had heard my foolish plan ( it didn't end in South Africa) and sent my my soon to be wife and that brought my employer of 27 years to make me an offer that led this Waterman to Las Vegas. In trade off, I also purchased a home in Oceanside CA. Where I have instilled a love of the sea in my Granddaughters. May they live a life of wonderful dreams as I have. May they never desire to face the Antarctic Ocean in winter as I still do.
The night sailing just seems terrifying to me. Things that go bump in the night. As one race to Alaska foil guy said “you hardly see any logs at night”
On my CD36 the reefing lines go forward through fair leads on the boom to a cleat not too far back from the mast. After reefing those lines are coiled and hung from the cleat. I thought most boats a rigged that way but I am no expert. Cheers.
agreed. my clew reefs (3) run inside the boom and come out in various places on the boom to clutches. I try to neaten up prior reef line (remove dangle slack) when taking a deeper reef. sometimes shaking out a reef or doing a full hoist you have 3 reef lines needing to pull slack through their clutches/sheaves/cringles. you need to remember to ease all reef clutches when hoisting if you had taken up their slack to prevent that dangling. on some boats there is too much friction of the clew reef lines around boom sheaves and the luff cringles so hoisting can get difficult as the sail tries to pull out the reef line it needs. so yeah, if you don't do that then you have lots of clew reef line loop on deep reefs or when you completely drop the sail. then you need a place to tuck it all, either a net/bag at the boom end or stuffing line into sail folds.
Hi Sam. Great vids You seem to be doing a lot more than most solo sailors out there. Well done. Just a quick question for you. How does the limited 90 day stay in Eu countries affect you as you sail about Is there any ways around this issue
Do they make a main sail that wraps up on a pole at the bottom, like the jib but at the bottom of the sail. So you unfurl or wrap up (bring down) the main sail. It would take place of the bag and you could winch it up or down.
