Locked out of Venice flood gates in BIG seas!

- I sail from Croatia to Venice, but don’t make it in time, and they close the Venice floodgates. A storm turns up. I heave too and then claw my way back upwind in big seas.

Sam is the man! Probably one of the best UA-cam sailing videos I have seen. Other UA-cam sailors show you a flat sea and tell you how rough it is, but “the camera doesn’t show it”. When Sam is in the shit, he is in the shit and you can see it on the video. Glad you and Pickel arrived safely - enjoy your winter break.
This bad weather is more of an annoyance than a scary condition.
To you… not me.
Question: you seem to spend. More time on the sheets than on tiller. Do you steer by tiller or by sail trim?
@@user-xp3jb6ve9wleft easier and beat the flood gates closing.
@@fredskinner1233its only about 3 meters no whitecaps to speak of, no flying spume, its nothing, just not enough sea room to sleep without concern while hove to. That guy should get himself a Monsun or Nic32.
By far the scariest conditions I've ever seen you sail in!!! You are the MAN!!!
White knuckle sailing! Best sailing channel on UA-cam!!
"If not for the courage of its fearless crew, the Pickle would be lost!"
I see what you did there.
@@SavingMaverick55 He did what you see there too...
I got anxiety seeing that boat tilt so much !! And then that comment !! "Hope my mast doesn't come off " !!!! Broo !!!
Respect your attitude , cool head , calm practical approach… and understated competence .
Oh gawd. Sam is going to die.
The only reason I didn't panic watching this video is the fact Sam posted it meaning he made it. These are the moments when your boat maintenance is put to the test. It would be great if Sam gave a review of what he did right and what he did wrong.
Amazingly modest man showing tremulous seamanship...all credit to you Sam.
We sometime forget Sam is in a small boat with all the increased dangers, boats half as long like most other sailors use are actually almost 4 times the tonnage ( cube by volume).
Most intense I have seen on YT, All this with a smile.
Go Sam,go !!! THUMB UP EVERTBODY.
Good filming in crazy conditions. Good to see you using a harness and tether.
Pickle is one hell of a boat...and you're one hell of a sailor.
Holy CRAP Sam! A real Lt. Dan scream at the sea moment!
Can you please buy an AIS transponder :). I'm a big fan and don't want you to get run over by some cargo vessel. The amount of peace of mind that it brings is priceless! knowing that other ships can see you on their sceens.. Stay safe man.
also, when approaching a lock or smth, they'll often just wait for you without you even asking. Way less getting cursed at in busy channels etc.. I highly recommend AIS. (especially when sailing solo.)
is it that expensive?
@@lazarv7015they have ais vhf radios. I got one. It even alerts me with a loud alarm when another vessel is within 8 miles of me.
I absolutely love your stoic attitude during some of the roughest conditions i have seen you in. Get it 💪 Sam!!!
Wow. That was wild! What a way to end the season! The footage using the 360 of your hoisting the main and from the cabin of you attempting to come about/gybe was some of the best over the years. Great video, great seamanship, great season. Thanks, Sam. I look forward to more adventures!
Sam is all like "Whoo hoo !!! This is awesome !!!" and I'd wager everyone was all like "Jeeze that looks kinda horrifying. I hope he makes it.".
You, sir are calm AF. Unflappable when everything else is in full flap.
I am glad you got those new sails. That would have been tough with your old ones.
Bravo Sam.
Yes the heavy Roly Taskers came into their own on this trip.
The Pickle is a beast. great sailing!
Right in the middle of all that, Sam has a beaming smile. 18:44.
Sailing in them winds would bring a smile to my face for sure.
That was the best sailing video from the perspective of a single-handler in a small boat that I've ever seen.
You really show what it's like to be alone on a small boat in a storm.
Reminds me of what it was like being in the North Pacific on a 27ft Vega.
Great finale to your cruise.
Bravo!
My dog was hassling me for her dinner. I said not yet, I’m waiting for Sam to tac. It was a nail biter. 🤣🌻
Thanks for sharing your enjoyable sailing adventures! The journey to Venice was heroic.
Thank you.
'Art stuff' , you peasant Sam ;-) One of your best videos by a nautical mile. Extremely cool calm , and collected in challenging circumstances.
Fantastic ,.and put some of these alleged 'superstar' sailors to shame. I wish you and P/Herring a great break. Thank you.
Watched this twice now as it's some really great footage in high frequency waves, near shore, wind shifting off the waves. Well done, Sam! Thank you for sharing it all with us. I have to caution you on the harness system as it appears yours will allow you to fully be overboard. Folks who have tested getting back aboard a moving boat even in calm conditions have concluded that they should clip onto tight centerline straps so that they can't fall completely overboard. Venice is a very cool place to be wintering Pickel. Look forward to your continued travels.
Thanks for the tip
Damn Sam! That Venice passage was crazy! Really had us nervous. We love it when the rails are dipping, just not in cold 12' seas! Good on ya mate! Here's a beer on me. Thanks for the adventures.
Scott
Thanks. Cheers 🍻
Excellent portrayal of the Alfred Hitchcock moment when a big ship changes course so as to collide with your small boat at night in rough weather - disbelief - slight panic - course correction - waiting in fear - confirming it is okay - wondering why that happened - relief. Thanks much.
Dude, you are the best, The Best at showing big swell heavy wind sailing. I love it . I live on a sailboat in the puget sound of Washington state.
I have boated tens of thousands of miles in trawlers, Sportfish boats and center consoles and my hat is off to you as your skill is incredible and your calmness is to be admired!
amazing greens and greys @ 17:30. great job sir. had me on the edge of my seat.
My friend, you buried the rail in a big way! Great job making way. Keep the slimy side down!
The mighty Pickle does it again! Great job sailing a rough passage Sam, it was awesome to be right there with you through it. Have a great winter recharging and refitting, can't wait to see your next adventure.
Thanks! What a great journey it’s been. Thanks for letting us join you. Enjoy your winter
Aloha
Great video. I liked your cool calm demeanor. True sign how comfortable you are in any seas.
That was pretty wild, but you handled it well. I’m a new sailor and I’ve learned a lot from watching you sail. Enjoy the time on land. Thanks for the great videos.
Awesome! Thank you!
I love this guy. I’ve been following him for a while and I just love him
I watch sailing UA-camrs all year and this was the scariest conditions I have ever seen. You definitely have grand palle.
I would have soiled myself. Incredible. And you kept filming. This is one of the most epic YT sailing videos yet. Well done and thank you for sharing.
Some gnarly shit, for sure. But Sam took it with his usual relaxed style. Ric Flair would be impressed. Whoooo...!
Really great montage towards the end. Good way to provide glimpses of the city. Thanks!
Cape Dory: “a capable coastal cruiser”
Sam Holmes: “hold my beer”
Love it
Wow! Best sail yet. Jumping around on the fore deck in those waves and wind..... dicey ..... glad you made it safe. At night to boot! Best video yet. Glad the rigging and auto steer held up. Been there when the waves and wind make it difficult if not possible to tack with limited rudder authority vs. forces on the boat. Waves were epic! Pickel took a beating.... a full safety check is recommended. ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
That video had the highs, lows, and intensity that was becalmed by the beautiful Venice. Impactful episode, I’ve watched them all and this might be my new favorite. Good job Sam
Wild sail, expertly handled, without a click-baity video title. Easily the best sailing channel on UA-cam!
Wow! What a passage for the end of the season. Great video Sam.
Thanks a ton!
Brilliant video, had me rooted to my chair !! It looked like the med didn't want to let you go, you certainly finished the season in style. Look forward to your return.
That was gnarly! Great way to end the season. Thanks for filming all of that.
Whoa. What a dramatic way to end the season. Cool under pressure as always. Beautiful relaxing Venice scenes are a great palate cleanser to the crazy sailing conditions.
A testament to a good sailor and a fine little Cape Dory ! Sail on...
Some great footage in this episode Sam, Thank you! Nothing like clawing your way off a lee shore in a blow.
That was an awesome passage - my days singlehanding in Mexico and the Pacific showed me nothing in comparison - good on ya mate! 👍🏼👊🏻
Like number 100, I know how special that is. Thank you for all of the content through the years Sam
When the water turned green.... You know you're into it.
Wow, great job sailing the rough seas into Venice! Absolutely amazing, enjoy your videos.
Intense. So fun to watch. You remind me of a kid having a great time playing in a rainstorm.
OMG Sam,that was insane. Most intense sailing I have seen in a long time.Much respect.
I give you a lot of credit Sam. Being alone in such dangerous seas..you’re the man! Thanks for showing us how real sailing is done
What exceptional documentry making. Well done Sam you should be proud.
Absolutely awesome footage.... this video should get an award... your amazing 🎉
This is one of the best rough weather sailing videos I ever seen! Huge respect to your sailing experience and calmness!!! 👍❤️
Love your cool attitude Sam, I would be crapping myself! 🙌
Me too 😂
Best sailing channel on you tube
All right Sam, good job. We usually see you cruzin in great conditions. I appreciate your character Evan more now that I see you hold an Evan keeled demeanor in challenging conditions! A true seasoned sailer. People like yourself make the world a better place . And a big thanks to Isac, for taking good care of you. Feeling the love
I've been watching your channel the whole way through and this footage of you hoisting the main is really the first that shows what you REALLY do out there. I've been waiting this whole time for a shot of you reefing or anything in high seas, because I know it is insane. This is amazing to get to see. Thanks for the death defying filmography!
That was a pretty radical sail mate!
Glad that you and Pickle made it through the storm without damage! Have a great Northern Hemisphere winter Sam!
Great end of the season video. Probably not so great for you at the time but what the hell, Pickled Herring is resting comfortably now, awaiting next seasons' travels. I've been following you since you went to Hawaii. This, to me, is the best voyaging channel available. Keep up the good work. Fair winds!
Incredible sailing, what a great video! You always have such a great disposition and positive attitude towards your endeavors! Enjoyable to watch.
I can't believe how calm you are! I wouldn't be but what can you do? Can you imagine how many sailors have gone to the bottom there? You'll love Venice❤
It looked like at one stage you were balancing your sail’s area with Pickle’s sail bag which appeared to have the same ‘cross sectional area’ as your Jib ! Brave man, good perseverance!
DUDE! I've been watching you a long time and this had to be one of the scariest videos I've ever seen you do. Edge of my seat watching this.
I've not seen someone struggling to tack like this. Epic video. And a weatherly boat.
Man I was holding my breath in my living room recliner lol. You got some brass ones, that's for sure. Best Video award for sure. Thanks, and happy you arrived safe and sound. Have a wonderfull time away from ol' pickle.
I just want to say a couple of things first off I love watching your videos and they have been an inspiration. After quite a while of saving up I finally have the means to go and buy my own boat which I'll be doing so in the next couple of weeks . I just want to say thank you again for putting out all of your content I thoroughly enjoy watching it and I cannot wait to get out there to see what it's like for myself
Right on
Great stuff sir! As a 74 year old hippie I have heard “I am really bummed..” many times even before it became common usage but I am struggling to remember a time when I heard it from someone with such a big grin on their face! Having done some sketchy sailing on San Francisco Bay I can relate somewhat to what you’re doing but never single handed…real adventure!!!
"More downwind tomorrow..." is always my plan.
so strange Sam is on vacation now, while he is on vacation. Vakantie!!!!
Wow! Crazy conditions! You handled it well. I was on the edge of my seat watching.
Gotta love a sailboat that just goes no matter what
Hi Sam, great video, always so calm in all situations. I am writing this from Hobart, Tasmania, the most southern state of Australia. We are in the roaring 40’s and often have conditions like that. Pickle seemed to handle it no problem
Cheers Alistair McRae
Sam IS THE MAN! What an amazing sailing video.
When I saw your solo to Hawaii video so many years ago, I thought there is something special about this young man, Your skill and calm has gotten you through a lot. I was mesmerized by this video. Way to get through a very tough situation yet remain your Sam self. Thanks for sharing and capturing this.
I won't panic unless Sam's grin fades
That's a real nail bitter Sam cruising for chaos excellent thank you enjoy your time off
I’ve been in that situation…where she wouldn’t tack…very weird. I was able to gybe, but it was violent and the traveler hung up on the windward side and as I started to go over I saw the stuck traveler and pulled it free and she bobbed up. My mainsail, where it was reefed was filled with about 100 gallons of water from the near capsize. Yikes. I got home though.
You sir are a bona-fide mad man . Cheers to your positive demeanor in such conditions!
Sam I love your modesty and your not so perfect of a modest boat as well! A bit of rust here and there yep that's a well used machine for sure. What a life and a true sailor that at first is not recognized but spend a bit of time here and one finds out very differently.
Man, was that ever an adventure !😮 what a legend keeping it cool in some pretty gnarly conditions. Can't wait to see what next year looks like.
Loving the films thanks
Hands down one of the best sailing videos ever made. Thank you for doing this and sharing. Absolutely incredible. Cape Dory for the win!
Can’t wait to see what you do in the off season
Sporty adventures all about timing , luck and sea experience. Keep sailing on!
Hey Sam another great SHS update. Enjoy the time in Norway and see you when you get back into the Med or sooner. Thanks for sharing!
Hard Core right there Mate Awesome!!!
In weather where everyone else stays home Sam is out there challenging Poseidon and winning
Brought back some great memories of my visit to Venice.
Lists off all of the issues, says “I’m bummed”…all with a smile on his face. Wishing you all the best, Sam!
Think I had an adrenalin rush watching,.,.,Tkzz for sharing.,.,.,peace
Other reason why you make me want to sail even more ! Killer video Sam!
Challenging conditions!! Great job, Sam! 😎
You are one hell of a sailor.
