Anne Hathaway's rendition of this song is probably my favourite. It might not have the technical singing prowess of many others, which I believe Hathaway could probably do if she wanted. Rather she went with an incredibly raw, emotional interpretation, allowing emotion to be important than technical singing. When she spits out those words "He took my childhood in his stride, but then was gone when autumn came" you can here the bitterness and anger. It just works beautifully.
Nomadic813 Definitely. Anne has by far been the only woman who really captured the soul of the song itself. The way she poured out her emotion in the song made it one of the most dramatic musical scenes that any film can and will offer.
I love the way that she actually cut her hair during the take it added so much more. Much more dedication and emotion to the song and story line itself
brianna white The purpose was more acting, and feeling the song than just singing it. She was directed to sing raw however she wanted without too much thinking about the notes (and god knows she delivered). May be not the best singing rendition of this song (actually, certainly not) but for me it's the most beautiful rendition when put in the story. She really captured the essens of the song and the soul of the character.
+brianna white considering the anne hathaway is not and singer and that all the songs were sung with no music(music added at the end of filming the film) i would say she did pretty well
This is proof that even if you do not have a great singing voice you can still make a song sound amazing. I hate when people just sing the song. I mean yes it sounds good but this is not a song you just sing. Listen to the words and the what it is about. You DO NOT just sing. You pour your heart, your soul and all of your pain into the song and move the people who are listening to it. Only then will you give the song the credit it deserves and that is why I think Anne Hathaway has done the best rendition of this song I have so far heard. That woman deserved every award she got for this role.
+Tobin I've got to say that this is my favourite version too; yes, Anne is an actress paid to play a character, but she is a very good actres, which involves, not just a couple of movements from a manual, but to understand and feel the character, of course Anne hasn´t lived what Fantine went through, but that doesn't mean that she can't feel it. Otherwise, except for the ones who sing the song crying in the sofa along with an ice cream, every profesional singer is paid to portray Fantine's emotions, with Victor Hugo's novel and Schönberg and Boublil's script and yet not everyone achives the same level of quality/credibility.
exactly. this song actually requires an actor though to sing and not a singer, most singers sing off paper but actors have to become characters. anne did this song true justice. true emotion.
Rothiir Magus I fully agree. I've listened to this so many times just so I can study the emotion in it. I'm planning on singing it for a friend tommorow so I can get an opinion on weather it's good or not and weather I can sing or am I fooling myself lol.
Man.. Am I the only one who thinks Anne has a beautiful voice? You guys are jerks. This is by far the best rendition of this song I've ever heard. It actually has emotion. It's impossible to not cry when listening to her.
Anne’s version is by far my favorite and the best version imo. The emotions are so raw. The other versions are just soulless and too perfect. This version really captures the despair Fantine is experiencing.
I would there are much better versions that are musically better, but not realistically better. Like the crying, panting, and seeming like she's out of breathe really brings the realism into it. It embodies what she's been through and the pain she's suffered. So impressed with Anne Hathaway
EuJune Kim Anne Hathaway can AFFORD to put the crying, gasping, etc. into it, because she's an actor in a movie. Whereas if you're onstage in the Queen's Theatre, it would ruin the whole song. Have you heard Lea Salonga perform this?
I can never get over this song and how well it was done. The pure, raw emotion in it is very apparent to anyone who hears it. I love that in this movie nothing was prerecorded (thats what I heard). Every actor sang on the spot and I thibk they did an incredible job
Okay, so whoever is saying she can't sing, stop. she might not sound like other singers, she's still amazing! Don't you know how hard it is to sing while acting AND crying?! It's really hard. You have to control your singing voice so that it doesn't sound bad because of your crying...
Christiana Angeline Sabijon THANK YOU!! Cannot believe there are people who dare say she can't sing. I can barely talk audibly while crying. Like damn, people, stop being judging pricks and listen to her powerful performance. If you don't like it, don't click on her video.
Whoever made this lyric video did it very well. The colors changing over to dull from bright and dreamy was so perfect at that moment. And the font is beautiful, not corny like a lot of lyric videos use.
'But the tigers come at night' and 'As they tear your hope apart' like omg gurl that's SO low pitched! I have to sing this song for an audition as well >n
There are better singers....but not a better actress. Reading the lyrics or listening to them being mighty sung strikes you as sad and moving….but this ACTUALLY moved me. Cheers for Hathaway, one of my favorite actresses
I often start my day by listening to Anne Hathaway’s rendition of this song and over and over again her singing touches me. There is so much beauty in both the lyrics and her voice.
In my opinion Anne Hathaway didn't sing this song best, but she definitely performed it best. Her version is the most relatable to the lyrics and she produces the feeling and emotion that you should feel while listening to this song.
My mom doesn't understand english at all, but I felt that she HAD to listen to this because it is an amazing song sang amazingly by Anne. I translet her the lyrics while they were showing on screen and at the end of the song she had tears in her eyes and she clapped at the screen. This is what great acting and great singing brings to people. Thank you Anne, and congrats for the Oscar, it is totally deserved!
Honestly never seen a better version of this song than anne hathaways, in the way she sings it, in the emotion, in the correct pausing and tone of voice, everything. Utterly beautiful
well....I was just looking for the lyrics.....got hooked up in the comments and forgot about the lyrics AND the song. Found myself crying. If that's not testimony to the emotion of the song.....
one of the best performances I ever saw by an actress. ever since i saw the movie and this scene played, I can't stop thinking about he breathtaking the performance is. i am so glad i saw the movie in the cinema.
I have chills so passionate and beautiful , she did so good! I love how she puts emotion, tears, and panting in the song makes you really feel her pain so beautiful.
Ok! People in the comment section: 60%- WHO PUT THESE ONIONS HERE?! 20%-SUSAN BOYLE VS ANNE HATHAWAY 10%- PEOPLE TELLING HOW GREAT THIS IS 5%- FUN FACTS ABOUT THIS MOVIE 5%-PEOPLE ASKING WHAT FONT THIS IS and I'm here like; How did she sing so good
Perhaps as mere music. But it's said Anne also partly denied herself partly off camera, so that too would make her seem less than just the theoretical "emotion" by just music in only audio. Think about it, while the audio in any of the stage versions were good did any of them look the way they were suggested to be? Did the one who played Fantines' daughter actually look unhealthy or was she just dressed badly to suggest she wasn't in pure health?
I hope to one day pour emotion the way Anne did in this song when I watched this part my whole soul cried for her that's how well she conveyed her emotions in this song and her voice is beautiful.
i keep replaying this over and over again. not a single time where i shed no tears. anne hathaway's performance in this gives me so much respect for her.
Susan boyle did a very good cover and she has a better voice, I have to say that. But anne's version has more feelings and that's why I like her version better.
Susan Boyle's "version" of the song was exactly that, a cover. The reality is, this song is not in any way, shape, or form a beautiful song. The song is angry, the singer is pissed off because she feels her life was stolen from her. Susan Boyle's "version" didn't contain any raw emotion, all she did was get on stage and sing a song. I don't necessarily think that Anne Hathaway is a good singer, but the way she delivered the song was perfect.
James Ritchie no doubt susans version was good but if you look at it on the perspective of making the song emotional your gonna have to go with to glee because let's be honest Susan did not have the emotional aspect
Beautiful singing! I knew Anne Hathaway was a phenomenal actress, but I didn't know she could sing as well. I cried when I first heard her sing this song. The emotion, the anguish, the anger! Beautiful singing!
I love her rendition of this song. I remember growing up hearing this song, hearing the lyrics and feeling like other renditions while sung so beautifully didn't really connect though some more than others... At least to me... Anne captured how I would've loved to sing the song had I the ability. I'm happy to have heard her version and in a way I had thought about. I don't know if this something others have done, lol. Maybe I'm just a weird one. But again I'm happy to have this rendition. If only to now know what it would sound like or how it would come across.
This song gives me depressing memories. It sucks I'm still in love with my cheating ex, but hey, it's fading. Anyways, this life reminds me of our time together ;~;
There was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting There was a time Then it all went wrong I dreamed a dream in times gone by When hope was high and life worth living I dreamed, that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used and wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung, no wine untasted But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart As they turn your dream to shame He slept a summer by my side He filled my days with endless wonder He took my childhood in his stride But he was gone when autumn came And still I dream he'll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms we cannot weather I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed
This is the thing that makes life changes so hard...to give up the way you expected things to be. Go ahead and feel bereaved and in despair but when your mind can accept that things have changed, beyond your control, you can begin to cope with it and create something new.
This song is honestly the most beautiful song ever to be sung. She puts such emotion into it, the listener can feel the pain and emotion she goes through and puts into it. This is REAL music.
The performance of this song is so different from anything that I've ever heard or ever will hear! Truly amazing, this version will never be forgotten.
I cry everytime, I love that they recorded it live because it feels more realistic and you can really feel the pain and emotions that Fantine is going through. Anne did a wonderful job with this, so proud.
I'm sorry, no offense to anyone who has played Frantine in Les Miserables & sung this song, but when Anne Hathaway did this song in the movie version, it blew me away! Her raw emotion really brought what the song was all about to LIFE! You need to remember what Frantine was going through, she lost her virginity & childhood to a man who just used her & then left her, pregnant & with no money, denying her or the baby's existence, who Frantine had to give up to a nasty orphanage & pay money to, by having to sleep with men. And in the end, got sick from one of them & was dying, having to face who would take care of her little girl when she was gone. She lost everything, her reputation, her home, her child, the man she thought loved her & now she was dying. I would say that calls for an emotional song, Anne Hathaway pulled it off brilliantly!
This song brings tears to my eyes and gives me goose bumps... I was so sad for Fantine... She didn't deserve what happened to her... It is so heart breaking. The emotion that Anne Hathaway puts into this so is incredible and passionate. This is what music is supposed to be. It is supposed to make you feel something, and this does just that. It is raw and real.
Right before I watched this, this ad came on. "Boursin" Garlic herb and Cheese commercial. In it, they had people chopping up onions. Is UA-cam literally trying to make me cry or...?
I can see Anne Hathaway winning the Oscar for this performance. She was amazing. Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of hers but after seeing this movie, it changed my mind about her. She is so talented and she made me cry more then once. ♥♥♥
I appreciate the fact that she made it so emotional, but it made it so it sounded more like a poetry reading than a song. I like when the song is just sung, with emotion in the singing, rather than a person "crying" the song instead of singing it.
Wow, this is the best version of this song that I have heard. She may not have the power that a broadway star does, but the emotions she gives are unmatched.
I just watched Les Mis yesterday and it was so amazing and so moving that I cannot even describe it. The way that Anne performed this song was stunning, you could feel the pain that Fantine must have felt in every single lyric. You would have to be a stone to not cry to this song, no matter what version.
I listen to this almost every day on my way home from work, and I find it very hard not to cry towards the end, because you can hear her breaking down and I cry when others cry.
I saw the film at the cinema and it was the first time I was ever familiar with the whole story. Sobbed my eyes out at this song! Anne deserves the Oscar.
you are missing the point! The song was sung during an ACTING PERFORMANCE! the raw emotions through the lyrics are felt and expressed at the same time as the singing, which is why the way its sung may not be as 'pretty' as its usually sung. THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT!! Anne Hathway could sing this song beautifully if she wanted to, but it would've been robbed the song of EMOTIONAL TRUTH.
Anne Hathaway's rendition of this song is probably my favourite. It might not have the technical singing prowess of many others, which I believe Hathaway could probably do if she wanted. Rather she went with an incredibly raw, emotional interpretation, allowing emotion to be important than technical singing. my friend said her voice was off but i knew this song was just raw and passionate so anne did a great job at capturing it

She really captured the essens of the song and the soul of the character.
+Speedypaint I couldn't have said it any better myself. Bravo.
+Speedypaint i know exactly what you mean... just thinking about that scene i feel her pain.. makes me cry, gives me chills
+brianna white considering the anne hathaway is not and singer and that all the songs were sung with no music(music added at the end of filming the film) i would say she did pretty well
they all sang live with no recording beforehand I think
This is proof that even if you do not have a great singing voice you can still make a song sound amazing. I hate when people just sing the song. and yes for me Anne Hathaway version is the best

Great. Now I guess I don't matter anymore.
Man.. Am I the only one who thinks Anne has a beautiful voice? You guys are jerks. This is by far the best rendition of this song I've ever heard. It actually has emotion. It's impossible to not cry when listening to her.
Exactly!
She did this in one take & had Hugh Jackman in tears .
Anne’s version is by far my favorite and the best version imo. The emotions are so raw. The other versions are just soulless and too perfect. This version really captures the despair Fantine is experiencing.
Anne Hathaway has a beautiful voice
You guys are just mean
Not a great time for me to chop onions during that scene
How can she cry and sing so very well at the same time? Because that's exactly how she sounds. What a great performance!
"i had a dream my life would be so different from this hell i'm living." SO RELATABLE
same
fahad sheraidah ik right
How are you starving in poverty? Because you most likely are having first world problems
Gabe Perez well ik that but it relates to me In different way and it's not the hole song that relates to me but you are correct in some ways
fahad sheraidah same
Watching Anne in this scene always gives me shivers and makes me cry. Her performance was amazing

yes omg I love it@@yong-chenperng7615
Susan sings well, but when she sings it, she seems happy. Hello? It's supposed to be a very sad song.
I may not have a great belting voice, but I can totally do all the acting/gasping/crying
700th like
did you know it's actually really hard to sing and cry?? somehow anne hathaway made it work, which really proves her talent
" i had a dream that life would be... So different from this hell im living!!!" Hits the spot everytime👌
he took my childhood in his stride is a hot ass line that always makes me cry agh why?
your entire comment rhymed

True
@@hannahdodd2898 Amen. This is best version I’ve heard for a while.
What a load of garbage Opera singers do it without fail.
"Now.. Life has killed the dream.. I dreamed"
HuntressTheWarrior I was on that part just when I scrolled through the comments
Whoever made this lyric video did it very well. The colors changing over to dull from bright and dreamy was so perfect at that moment. And the font is beautiful, not corny like a lot of lyric videos use.
This is one of my favorite songs for les miz. And Anne Hathaway did it perfectly. You can really feel the emotion in her voice.
***** Its the same thing.....
***** Les Mis is just a shorter version
To be able to sing this well while giving off this amount of emotion and sorrow and pain, wow... That takes a lot of talent. Amazing!
'But the tigers come at night' and 'As they tear your hope apart' like omg gurl that's SO low pitched! I have to sing this song for an audition as well >n
(I'm a soprano)
Scarlet Whiteley keep trying to expand ur vocal range by doing such simple things like scales.
Also, how did it go?
am i the only one who hears this and has to sing along?
Heck no you're not! I do it all the time :3
Of course you are not! Don't be silly! :D
im glad im not the only one
I do it as well
LittleMissHayle NOPE! I need to sing every time!
"And still I dream he'll come to me.
That we will live the years together."
This is my current life.
But I have too much hope to finish the phrase.
Same here. I am the way to come out from the damn lockdown of my life.
There are better singers....but not a better actress. Reading the lyrics or listening to them being mighty sung strikes you as sad and moving….but this ACTUALLY moved me. Cheers for Hathaway, one of my favorite actresses

Wow this ones the sadest and heart touching song i hav ever heard
Anne Hathaway will always have my heart! 💜 Favorite actress on this earth.
It sounds so cheesy and stereotypical to say that I can relate to this song, but it really does reflect so much of what I’ve been through
Reva Is The Diva Thanks bro, hope you’re doing ok too
Reva Is The Diva Mostly, haha. Still figuring things out but better. Glad you’re doing alright
In my opinion Anne Hathaway didn't sing this song best, but she definitely performed it best. Her version is the most relatable to the lyrics and she produces the feeling and emotion that you should feel while listening to this song.

there are reasons why they're called "dream", because most of the time dream remains dream
That's not very profound
Not for me
I think this song is just so relatable to so many people. In a perfect world it wouldn't, though. Anyway, I love the way she sang this.
This song was so good that when I saw it in the theater everyone clapped afterwards.
they do that at every production after every song I've been 12 times
I mean in the movie, not the play.
When the flower background appeared I was like, yup it's supposed to be a sad part.
(cries hard) hey! who left this bowl of onions here?

yes I know it's Squidward, just go with it

When you realized that you'd have to abandon your talent and dreams in order to keep on living and work till death.
I hated it.thats life.very few of us dare to dream and go for it. Most of them life itself kill the dream ..
Anne is a multi-talented woman . Love your voice.
one of the best performances I ever saw by an actress.
ever since i saw the movie and this scene played, I can't stop thinking about he breathtaking the performance is.
i am so glad i saw the movie in the cinema.
I have chills so passionate and beautiful , she did so good! I love how she puts emotion, tears, and panting in the song makes you really feel her pain so beautiful.

i keep replaying this over and over again. not a single time where i shed no tears. anne hathaway's performance in this gives me so much respect for her.
Now Life Has Killed The Dream I Dreamed....My wife sings this so much for our son...Rest In Peace Ray
Without a doubt the best performance of the entire movie. The most heart wrenching thing I've heard in years. Outstanding!
I never cry during songs or movies but damn
I love this song. So Raw and emotional
+James Ritchie preach! 👆👌👐
+Youvita Emma listen to Glee's version its better
+Angel serendipity it can't be...simply just can't be.
James Ritchie no doubt susans version was good but if you look at it on the perspective of making the song emotional your gonna have to go with to glee because let's be honest Susan did not have the emotional aspect

I love this song and I love how u created the design for the lyrics!
This is good. I tear up everytime
This song gives me depressing memories. It sucks I'm still in love with my cheating ex, but hey, it's fading. Anyways, this life reminds me of our time together ;~;
The best version and performance of this song ive ever heard, makes me cry everytime I play it well done Anne xxxx
this is really really deep
It really is.
The best version of this song there is. Absolutely stunning. So much emotion and I feel so much compassion for the character. Simply perfect.
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong
I dreamed a dream in times gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed, that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream
I dreamed
This is the thing that makes life changes so hard...to give up the way you expected things to be. Go ahead and feel bereaved and in despair but when your mind can accept that things have changed, beyond your control, you can begin to cope with it and create something new.
No version of this song moves me to tears as surely as this one.
She's pouring out her soul in the song. Chapeau, Anne!
She’s acting first and singing second, which is why some people say it’s “off”.
This song is honestly the most beautiful song ever to be sung. She puts such emotion into it, the listener can feel the pain and emotion she goes through and puts into it. This is REAL music.
I finished the novel last week. I read about what really happened to Fantine that the movie skips over. Super sad
The performance of this song is so different from anything that I've ever heard or ever will hear! Truly amazing, this version will never be forgotten.
this version always makes me cry.
I cry everytime, I love that they recorded it live because it feels more realistic and you can really feel the pain and emotions that Fantine is going through. Anne did a wonderful job with this, so proud.
i can feel fantine's pain here........such emotional rendition.
This is so raw and emotional, I love it

Benny The Tree Yes, they're trying to, is it working?
Her voice and this song just gives me chills!!! It is so beautiful and emotionally well done and amazing!! 💖
I song this and I lost my voice after this
Totally worth it
Same
I can see Anne Hathaway winning the Oscar for this performance. She was amazing. Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of hers but after seeing this movie, it changed my mind about her. She is so talented and she made me cry more then once. ♥♥♥
I might be auditioning for Fontine in my school production of Les Mis
Did you get it???
Update????
Did u get it?!
Me too
I appreciate the fact that she made it so emotional, but it made it so it sounded more like a poetry reading than a song. I like when the song is just sung, with emotion in the singing, rather than a person "crying" the song instead of singing it.
I can’t be the only one wondering what font-
Wow, this is the best version of this song that I have heard. She may not have the power that a broadway star does, but the emotions she gives are unmatched.
extremly feeling
I just watched Les Mis yesterday and it was so amazing and so moving that I cannot even describe it. The way that Anne performed this song was stunning, you could feel the pain that Fantine must have felt in every single lyric. You would have to be a stone to not cry to this song, no matter what version.
Luckily. she got that oscar. :)
The performance of this song was absolutely fantastic..she put a lot of emotion into this song...and that in itself is a spectacular performance...
One hate comment leads to “HOW ARE YOU GUYS SO MEAN THERE IS SO MUCH EMOTION AND IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE AND SHE HAS THE MOST AMAZING VOICE”😂
The pure EMOTION she puts she pits into the dog makes it just so much more beautiful
but there are dreams that cant be!!! 💔
I listen to this almost every day on my way home from work, and I find it very hard not to cry towards the end, because you can hear her breaking down and I cry when others cry.
oh,,, my feels,, it hurts to much.
Can we all take a moment to remember that this is the Princess Diaries girl? I cant believe how far she's come!
"Hey Anne Ima go to the store, want anything like a drink or chips or gum or" 2:59
I saw the film at the cinema and it was the first time I was ever familiar with the whole story. Sobbed my eyes out at this song! Anne deserves the Oscar.
Oh my gosh people try singing this without crying!
A very emotional and beautiful song. I still cry every time I listen to it.....and it's not like I think about a past love or anything like that.
I AM SO SAD
I'm still sad this song fucks me up lmao
+Nahyla Pacha I always come back to it when I find myself heartbroken
aw, sorry you're heartbroken :(((
this is a sad song and I love your profile photo!
YOUR PROFILE PICTURE
it takes alot to be sobbing on screen - bringing so much raw emotion to a charatcer - being a complete wreck, but stil sounding just so damn beautiful
My good lord may i know what font you used??
Simply BEAUTIFUL!❤
you are missing the point!
Chills the entire time. Never heard so much emotion in someone's singing.
