Lacquer thinner is a hot solvent. It’s evaporates really quickly, which leads to faster drying and also can cause issues when going over previous coatings. It’s a good idea to use a mix of retardant and lacquer thinner in equal parts in my experience.

Basically just a slower evaporator. Tends to make dry times a little longer and give the coating a chance to level
