I beat and loved FF7 as a child, Ultimate is my first real Smash game that I’ve put energy into getting good at (I played N64 version as a kid) and my main has been bottom-tier Ganondorf since launch. Sephiroth feels like he was built for my exact playstyle and this guide just became my bible for the next few weeks. Thanks so much for putting this together! I've also noticed in a few random matches against AI that if Sephiroth uses a fully-charged Shadow Flare against someone who can reflect, he gets his with *five* flares instead of three.

I've always played Smash casually. Competitively I'm more into your standard 2D fighters. So Smash always seemed alien to me. This video was a big help in getting me to see and understand how to apply fighting game terms into smash. These videos are appreciated! Thank you!
Great vid, thanks so much for making it! One small note on Sephiroth's Shadow Flares, only the last orb hit will always send your opponent away. The earlier orb hits work different. They send the opponent in the opposite direction of where they were facing when hit with the original application of the move. At low percents it doesn't matter because they don't have much knockback, but at high percents it can make the difference between a kill or not. Niche info but could come in handy at high percents.

in a seph ditto, you can just use side-b to easily get rid of flare (neutral-B) Like in mu's with characters that have projectiles, shadow flare can get rid of those pesky projectiles It can even clang with normal attacks so it may save you
I figured out early on octoslash was op and that if you b-reverse it while recovering, you send them to the other side You can do edgeguards the same way too since it just covers so much space

Fun facts: megaflare's actual explosion bypasses reflectors. Haven't tested whether it bypasses absorbing moves. Sephiroth's counter also can be reflected. So if he uses his counter on moves like Ness's fsmash, not only will it not hit Ness, but it'll end up backfiring on Sephiroth, ultimately killing him. Edit: holy shit he got the explosion down
I learned to use him through just playing with him, but this is a great guide. My proudest moment was fighting 7 level 9 Ice Climbers at once and slaying them all. It was a good 30 minute battle with no items. We played with 4 stocks each.
This is literally the best Christmas present i could have asked for ! I absolutley adore Sephiroth he is a better "Marth with Magic" than anything Robin promised to be (i still think Robin is cool tho)
I might play Ultimate as much anymore, but I'm really amazed by the balancing in this game compared to Smash 4. None of the DLC characters feel *blatantly* overpowered, despite having some incredible strengths. But all of them have specific weaknesses that can be exploited, such as Sephiroth's struggle with rushdown characters that manage to get in.

You don’t chose your main, your main chooses you. Your playstyle often has to fit the character your trying to play as. If your someone who likes a character with specific amount of raw power, and tool kit and speed and tilts and specials then you can choose your main based on what your strengths are as a player. For example, I love rushdown but I also love a character with a decently good recovery, I like a character that can perform easy combos, has alot of speed and raw power and can punish spot dodges. In this case my main would be Roy because he fits all of those description. Some people like character with decent raw power but high mobility, or very little raw power but a lot of mobility. Some people don’t really care about sacrificing a good recovery in a character, some people care about rushdown projectile characters, some people care about characters with a lot of range in projectiles and good recovery but slow movement. It highly depends on what you want out of a character, I suggest trying out every character in the game. At first I didn’t know exactly what my play style was until I started trying out all the characters and using this thing called process of elimination. Ik some people like characters that can change up its playstyle like Pokémon trainer or shulk. But the moral of the story is that you should choose a main that you can have a lot of fun with and that suits your playstyle so well without actually getting bored
Sephiroth is the dark side of cloud he uses the sword to make him more intimidating and is a medium ranged unit that uses mostly magic close up and does more dmg, he is a slow unit mostly at first because he doesn’t think that anyone is match for him(overconfident) and runs and dashes when he deems you worthy and goes in his tryhard mode and becomes more annoying, people who spam his standing still b move Arnt playing him right he ain’t a long range he waits for an opening and waits for you to come closer to do the most dmg and if you don’t come closer he comes to you

I might challenge the not being able to cancel flare with projectiles part. At least with Lucario I've noticed that aura sphere can cause normal flare to detonate early and it passes through to hit Sephiroth.
There's another flaw or two of Sephiroth, and that's the fact he is tall and a fast faller, so he's huge combo food for characters like Falcon, Greninja, Joker, etc. Combine that with his light weight and lack of good OOS options, and rushdown combo characters can keep him in disadvantage for a long time.
My friend that I play alot mains joker and greninja. I've been trying to learn sephiroth against that and it fucking suuuuuuuuucks. You nailed it on the head, I get combo'd from 0 to 45 every stock and have to work my way past a terrible start to win

If you press two buttons that are mapped to jump at the same time you'll perform a shorthop
If you press attack at the same time as the jump you'll perform a short hop too
I set ZL to jump so i don't have to slide my fingers, it's really useful

There's another flaw or two of Sephiroth, and that's the fact he is tall and a fast faller, so he's huge combo food for characters like Falcon, Greninja, Joker, etc. Combine that with his light weight and lack of good OOS options, and rushdown combo characters can keep him in disadvantage for a long time.
My friend that I play alot mains joker and greninja. I've been trying to learn sephiroth against that and it fucking suuuuuuuuucks. You nailed it on the head, I get combo'd from 0 to 45 every stock and have to work my way past a terrible start to win
