Mama squirrel coming and saving baby

- I found a baby squirrel in my back yard and moved it to my deck with a baby gate (to keep away from cats) in hopes that the mother would come find it. She must have been looking for him, because within 10 minutes, she started scoping out the area and planning her rescue. Though the baby does not look very active, I think he is scared because he seemed healthy but scared.
I apologize for the dog barking (so reduce the volume if using headphones or if you have a dog around that might go crazy!!). Since I was filming with my phone in my hand, there was no option to move my dog and be able to keep filming.

I remember during Hurricane in the 1/2 time quiet, son went outside ! I told him to be back in as it will turn back, he brought in two baby squirrels we kept them safe in an aquarium all cuddled up in a blanket !
Hurricane finally over and sun was up ! Opened the front door and babies were crying for their momma, we took them outside, put aquarium on its side and soon enough we heard excited chirping from mamma! I was amazed she came for them !! The three darted off

Ok I know this is a year later lol but I dont think that they wine for there mama I mean I have a 2 week old baby squirrel and when I first found it I have never heard it wine for there mom or anything like that BUT its non of my business so no hate plz

Thank God for Mothers! I am a great fan of 4 legged babies and the 2 legged kind should learn more than a thing or 2 off of their genuine sense of loyalty, love and duty.
Thank you for giving Mama squirrel a chance to come back and get her baby. So many people don't wait long enough to give a mama squirrel a chance to realize one of her babies is missing. They don't realize that mama squirrels don't hang out in the nest most of the time but are mostly out looking for food. They only come back to the nest to clean and feed their babies a few times a day.

Thank you, Irene, for that information. I hadn't thought much about it, but I can see you're right. The mothers do have to be on the move to feed themselves and thus have milk.
+yelloworangered if a baby falls out of nest, put in dogs and cats. give moma squirrel time to find her lost one(s).
two babies fell out of a hole that lead into my attic. two story house. moma came for them and had to make a 10 ft jump off of ledge to reach the hole. with 2nd baby squirrel, mom fell twice, but never let go of baby. finally she got them in the attic.
once they were all out of attic, i had hardi plank installed.
In some cases isnt not always best to try to wait for mom to come around. When you don't know how long the baby has been without food. My family used to find baby squirrels often and it's a matter of how hot/cold it is, how weak the baby is, ect. It's really a judgment call based on common sense.

Good eye! I watched it again after reading that, and yes, mama did do that! Wow.
You could see how agitated she was by her tail, and she was probably chittering ninety to nothing!
That fascinates me...how they quickly ball their young up and dash off with them!
It was rolling the baby to see it was OK - they do that to check for broken bones, etc., before carrying them away. And the tail-wagging showed that the mamma was frustrated and upset. Squirrels communicate with their tails so all of their different tail movements have meaning.
If you notice, they don't hold the baby by the scruff of the neck like cats. The baby holds onto the mother`s neck or wherever they can grip, with all four legs, and she holds on to the baby's side. It makes the baby easier to carry while negotiating tees etc., especially when the baby is bigger and heavier. Sometimes she needs her mouth free to grab a branch so if baby is holding on it helps.
It is amazing how they're able to bundle the the kid up n just trot off really fast. Yay..indeed!

How wonderful and well done for doing what you did. I found a baby squirrel years ago and left it for hours hoping the mother would return but she didn’t. In the end I had to release it into a wood next to my boundary fence as it was making distressed sounds. Broke my heart to leave it but there was nowhere to take it. There is now an animal sanctuary not far that take any animal or bird injured or lost. They have a fair few birds etc from me injured on the roads.

What sprung her into action was the barking dog...indicates danger so she got her baby out of there quickly.

Absolutely correct, she was NOT waiting around after hearing that dog! She immediately went to her baby, rolled it up in a ball so she could carry it, and got out of there! Nice save, but please be aware that if a squirrel falls out of its nest, (and they often do) give it a little time before you rescue it -- the mother will usually come for it!
So insightful. You should get a little couch and office and start a squirrel therapy clinic. You seem to understand them very well.
That’s what I thought, too. However, I also noticed that was around the same time we see any motion or noise from the baby; perhaps the mother was trying to assess if it had survived and was worth saving, since it perceived the rescue itself as dangerous, for some reason. Could have been both factors.

That mama surveyed the whole entire porch and figuring out how to get that baby back. She wanted to take it safely down the stairs but that baby gate was in the way. Glad she could do it safely another way. Animals are very smart!

Sometimes it's not the mother, but another female squirrel. Squirrels tend to adopt other babies even when it's not there own

Its amazing, the difference in comments from the baby money videos. The little ones are tiny and cute just like the squirrels but people want to stomp on them and watch them being tortured in horrible ways. I don't get it.

I love the way momma rolls baby up into a little ball with her hands and mouth, then grabs baby's neck and tail at the same time. Seems like a great way to make sure you can safely climb back up the tree without baby falling out of your grasp. Amazing little critters! Thank you for doing the right thing and letting momma come get her baby instead of deciding you needed to "save" the baby and take it inside. Too many people think baby animals are abandoned and interfere instead of letting the parent come find baby or placing baby back in the nest when it is a bird or bunny. It's nice to see someone recognize momma WILL come looking.
Seems as if the squirrel was checking around to see if it was a trap... and when it knew it was safe, it picked up the baby and went home... what a heartwarming scene

looks to me as if Mama squirrel was not that bothered by the situation and was just exploring right up till the dog barked and then she left reasonably quickly
Her tail action said she was very agitated from the beginning to when she picked up her young. She wasn't exploring, but looking for her baby, as the human scent evidently threw her off her baby's scent trail.
CA Catr actually she was being very cautious not to attract attention to the baby. Animal moms won't approach their young right away. They take extreme care to make sure no other animals are around that might follow them to the baby.
True River she was making sure no other animals were around. Mamas don't want to attract attention to their young so they first check out the area, and even though it's clear they approach quietly.
I agree with the four replies below....mama was quite agitated, but securing the perimeter!! before getting her baby...

I found a opossum baby one time & brought to a woman I found on the net that rehabs animals I gave $25.00 dollars for taking it in I just couldn't abandon the baby.
