  • Happy Year of the Dragon! To celebrate here's a special video of the UK Chinese Dragon Boat Festival at Media City in Salford. Manchester has the 2nd largest Chinese population in the UK and the 3rd largest in Europe, and this festival celebrates their culture and creativity, as well as the friendship between British and Chinese people. This is also the largest dragon boat festival in Europe with 40 teams taking part! The origin of the dragon boat festival is a complex yet fascinating story, which is thought to originate in 278 BC to commemorate the ancient poet Qu Yuan who drowned himself in protest against corruption. Dragon boat racing has been an important Chinese custom for over 2000 years and was declared a national holiday in China in 2008.
The UK dragon boat festival kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony with mesmerizing performances from Jinlong Martial Arts Academy. Some of the performers are junior wushu world champions! The racing then began with teams from various local and national organisations battling it out on the Erie Basin. The teams here on this day were amateurs, with professional teams competing the following day. There were also plenty of cultural activities with Chinese music, food and calligraphy, as well as amazing costumes of China's ethnic groups. It was a fantastic day and it was wonderful to experience and celebrate amazing Chinese culture! If you enjoyed the opening performances why not check out more here: ‪@jinlongcultureperformingar7495‬
