  • This is the 'We Invented the Weekend' festival at Media City in Salford! Did you know that the weekend as we know it today was invented here in Greater Manchester? Until the early 19th century everyone worked a 6 day week. That changed in 1843 when workers' rights activists campaigned for a early finish on Saturdays. The workers succeeded and this essentially invented the weekend, which is now enjoyed by billions around the world. This festival celebrates the things people do in their free time and there was plenty of things to do and performance to see, all for free! This video shows just some of the many events taking place during the 2 day festival. The first clip shows the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in an orchestral retelling of 'The Gingerbread Man', the second clip shows a 'Feeling Fabulous' voguing masterclass with Ghetto Fabulous, and the third clip shows local brass band Twisted Tubes taking the main stage. Other highlights included DJ sets, arts and crafts workshops and a special CBeebies tent, where you could listen to bedtime stories read by familiar CBeebies faces and special guests. It was an incredible event, congrats to all who organised it!
