Tyler writes all of the songs. Many of which focus on his personal battles with depression and insecurities and seeking God. TOP has very deep biblical themes in many of their songs that are written in a way to be interpreted by non believers in relation to their own demons or problems. Tyler battles a lot with the theme of flesh vs spirit, his two sides of the real him and “Blurryface” which is the darker thoughts.
I don't know if it's just me, but when I see someone appreciate Tyler and/or Josh, I feel really proud. Like I'm showing a parent a video of my best friend singing, and feeling proud of them. I don't know Tyler, but still feel so connected with them, and really happy when someone can appreciate his creativity.
Tyler is not a drug addict. That is not what he’s talking about. He was raised evangelical Christian and still is. Much of his writing is, at it’s core, an expression of the internal war between the flesh and the spirit, between doing what God calls you to do, and doing what our sinful nature wants to do. It’s also a struggle with faith and the frustration that comes from dedicating your life to something you cannot perceive with your senses. This is a young man crying out to God, asking Him for direct evidence of His existence. It is a rare, open expression of doubt, and continuing to believe in spite of those doubts. It is faith.
I thinkk something thats so unique and interest about TØP is that their music can be interpreted in so many ways, no matter the theme was. Tyler encourages people to find their own meaning in the words he writes so the meaning can be whatever they want it to be to best help to the listener
I have seen them 3 times and the concerts are like therapy. Everyone sings along and it's like one big family or support group. As someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, they perfectly put into words what I have been feeling for the past 40 years
Agree, fren! 😉 It's not a concert when you experience TØP live... It's a community; a connection. It's crazy-hard to verbalize this particular vibe, unless you've been a part of it. It's like you just KNOW you're in a room full of perfect strangers who all feel things on another level: no ego, or not to sound like I'm exalting the 'clique,' bc I think most TØP fans would not consider themselves above someone else based on this musical interest or standard. No, not a "better/higher level," just a "different" level.... A shared intimacy in a melodic form, if you will. I do not know one person who has attended alive show who WASN'T brought to tears at some point. Those two bøis carry something in their spirits that reaches into the depths of their fans' souls! It's ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!
This song is so strong, especially like all their other songs. It's why I live them and connect, their great beats along with the lyrics occupy my mind. That empty space that gets filled in by thoughts of my life.
I totally get why the title implies the addict is a drug addict. From what I understand, and my interpretation is that he is crying it for help from God because he is struggling with his mental illness. The cycle thing still applies with the addiction and people who battle mental health issues. It could be either. He did write it. He writes all his own music. He's amazing. Watching him sing this breaks my heart. There is so much feeling and pain and anguish in his voice and on his face. I just want to give him a hug. I love your reactions to the boys. Please keep going! Kitchen Sink, Forest, Goner (live at the Fox theater). All amazing. Anything by then is amazing.
Yes! Goner live at Fox!!!! Followed by Trees live at Fox and Holding on to You live at Fox. But the video for Holding on to You is great as well because they imagery helps a lot.

This song always brings me to tears, as a fellow Christian searching for God. I struggled with my sexuality a few years ago and you know, being a Christian doesn't really go well with being anything but straight, so I had given up on my faith. And I was so empty inside, so miserable, trying to hold onto the last drops of life in my hands... Then I found Twenty one pilots. And I was no longer alone, Tyler's lyrics represented so well what I was feeling, so I clinged onto them. And this is probably what saved me. So, thank you for reacting to them - I am certain they have helped many others as well with a wild variation of problems and sharing more of their songs might help more people, thank you!
Tyler’s addiction in question is writing letters like songs to God, because he is almost committing the crime of self harm and suicide in Christianity. He is apologizing to his god for doing those things and asking him for help even though he haven’t been recently focused on that. The way he calls it an addiction is crazy because this means that is pretty common to him writing songs apologizing. I really like twenty one pilots, all their lyrics are pretty deep and relatable if you have some of these alterations like depression, anxiety and stress. Personally one of my favorites is addict with a pen but you should listen to Holding on to You. Holding on to you is pretty deep too, it talks about how everything is just too much for him, and he needs the company of someone who can be with him in those situations, he also talks for us. You should react to this one. Keep going and, thank you for your work, I really like your reactions! We are thankful
"The waves of the water mean nothing to me". My next tattoo. Complete acceptance that nothing matters in the mindset of all TOP fans. Life matters my dudes, we've got this. Stay alive.
I've seen them in concert three times and it is so magical. The first time was back in 2014 and I was so unbelievably depressed back then. I remember they were playing "screen" and everyone was just screaming "we're broken people" over and over again and I just started sobbing. That was the moment I decided that I wasn't alone and that life was worth living. Twenty One Pilots is so much more than music to so many people and I am so grateful for them because they are a big part of the reason I'm still here today.
"I wonder if he wrote that song?..." That's so cute, I can tell you're new to TOP here. So glad you're diving into them. I know I can speak for many when I say, they saved my life.
During this time Tyler was struggling with religion, depression and trying to find God. He's not a drug addict. He grew up in a religious family and his addiction is finding God. He battles with it quite often throughout his music. I'm not a religious person but I appreciate the artistry that went into their earlier work. Their self titled album is fantastic.
And something really cool is he writes in a way so non religious listeners can also relate to it. He makes it so the meaning is whatever the listener wants to best help them
@@Space_cace Yeah. Very similar to how NF writes. I have nothing against faith. Believe what you want just don't force religion down my throat. Both artists seem to understand this and their writing is ambiguous while the artist might mean one thing, I find something I can relate to so I strap in for the ride and apply it to my life. It's masterful.
As a Christian this song is INCREDIBLY personal for someone with a religious background like Tyler. When he says “I’m just lying here screaming..wash me with your water”. Almost every religious person I’ve talked to has been in this situation because you are expecting this greater power to rescue you. In many churches (well at least the ones I’ve been too) we do not talk about the “frustrations” “doubts” “desperation” “fear” and “sadness” …we feel when our faith becomes questionable because we think God doesn’t care or hear us. I remember having dreams of being in a dessert just like Tyler mentioned the dessert! Thankfully I’m no longer in that situation and I feel closer to God ☺️
@@larissa1770 I'm glad you found God. I went the other way because God never answered and the Catholic school I went to didn't have the answers. I love the band but probably for different reasons but that doesn't mean we can't be friends. :)
I just wanna say I found you on here randomly today and I can tell how much of a genuinely good man you are. Your thoughtfulness, and how open you are to listening to new music despite being from an older generation is a very rare thing to see, and it makes me happy to see. I hope you become very successful on youtube, and I hope you have an amazing day 😁
Thank you so much for this. I haven’t heard this song in a really long time, so this brought me back to my high school years. This song, and this band, were one of my strongest anchors in some really really rough parts of my life. I’ve moved from them to other bands for comfort (mostly My Chemical Romance) but they will always have a special meaning to me. I’ve seen them twice, and plan to see them again this next fall. There’s nothing quite like hearing crowds of people you don’t know shouting together, “We made it!”
twenty one pilots helped me through all of my rough patches, hope to see you react to more of their wonderful songs! They've been my favorite band for almost five years now, I have a few requests: Neon Gravestones, Ode to Sleep, Guns For Hands, Friend Please, and Isle of Flightless Birds. Thank you for these videos! :)
I don't normally like the word favorite, but I can safely say tøp is my favorite artist. The lyrics are so deep, meaningful, biblical and personal, yet they generally apply to me. Great channel. Love the way you broke this down. Thank you Tyler, thank you Josh and thank you Tom.
Thank you so much for these reactions 🤍 back to 2019 I was going through a really tough time with depression and anxiety :( I felt alone, I thought nobody could understand my pain and the demons living in my head were killing me slowly... And then twenty one pilots came into my life, I discovered them with their song “migraine” which helped me to describe perfectly the way I was feeling, I felt supported by their music 🥰 and understood 🤍 After a long time working hard, attending therapy and taking care of myself I'm much better, they saved me in many ways and they still doing it today. 🤍🥲 I cried writing this 😂, I love them so much 🥰
You know I have to comment. TOP is one of my favorite things. I’m sad I haven’t heard this one yet. But what a great one. I feel like the sand he is holding is all the things holding him back, and wants to release so it’s just pure water. Like letting go of the addictions that he knows is holding him back from being his best. Love this one so much
Thank you so much for this reaction! Twenty One Pilots is my all time favorite band. Their music have a very special place in my heart. If you want to react to more TOP songs I recommend: "Holding on to you", "Redecorate" or "Neon gravestones".

Twenty one pilots have come such a long way since this era. You can physically see it through Tyler’s performances throughout the years as well as the change of lyrics in their newer music. Every song has its own story. I’m just as emotionally invested in them now as I was back then. Hey tom, theres a song called “save” by a young 17 year old tyler joseph thats only on UA-cam that you should really check out its a very therapeutic song imo, hope you see this!
Absolutely love this band. Went to a small show they had in Chicago last year and it was amazing. I couldn't even hear Tyler over the crowd. Everyone there was so emotionally invested into the songs. It was surreal. It seemed like half the crowd was crying at one point.

Love the reaction. The thing I love about ToP is that all of thier songs seem to be built like an onion. The skin is the music you can always bop to, but then you get to the lyrics and everyone can catch a word or frase differently changing the whole meaning but somehow neither is wrong. You can listen to nearly every song and find another meaning( layer) that you didn't notice before.
God this version of the song is so *raw*, you can see that they just did a one and done, and played and sung it with purely passion, no care in the world if it was perfect, only that it was a moment of passion and song and desperation
Great work as always Tom and Nick, what you’re doing is so important and I’m sure you’re helping a lot of people with these reactions and your commentary. Tøp lyrics can be really cryptic, Tyler does focus a lot on religion in his earlier writing, it’s not quite as obvious in their later work, but depression, anxiety etc are all very present throughout their catalogue. ‘Holding on to You’ would be a fab choice for the channel!
Thanks Emma, it’s great to hear from you again! Hope I haven’t missed your comments but so many have come in lately it’s hard to see them all. It’s not like those early days, but I love seeing your message😊👍
@@ReactionTherapyOfficial thanks Tom, I appreciate the comment! You guys are killing it! As someone who approaches these kinds of things from the emotional connection it’s very gratifying to have someone break it down on a rational level and validates the feelings their songs Help express
Truly love all the comments here, really adds clarity and perspective, even though I have never been into "religion" I have had my extremely deep moments of spirituality., I started playing guitar and singing because of music from Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp, etc... I grew up loving Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, AC/DC etc... But something about those previously mentioned Christian groups has from time to time opened my heart enormously at times, even though I don't believe in a Sky Daddy, maybe it was all the insanity I grew up in. I apply Addict With A Pen to my estranged relationship with my 21 year old Son. It has been extremely challenging, and every time I hear this song that is exactly where I go. It moves me deeply and causes me to think about him. Just amazing to me the many different ways music touches different people, wish you all the very best in life, love & relationships.
I highly suggest No Children by The Mountain Goats. It's such an interesting song for how the lyrics are sung. And I never completely understood it, even though I relate to it. Two people, who used to be married are on a mutual path of self destruction. Like hoping the fences with mended come crashing down. That the last few friends never forgive them. It's a very angry song, but the delivery is not what you'd expect. And imo the psychology behind the scenario would be fantastic for you to analyze.
A lot of Tøp’s music is meant to be interpreted how you see it and theirs tons of ways to interpret. I see this song as not only a biblical song but using writing his songs as a form of escape. That’s soemthing that’s truly great about Tyler’s writing, it holds a different message for everyone. A whole concert could be singing along and it would each have a different meaning.
You should check out some of his newer songs too. I think it's a lot less obvious in his newer songs and some people say that it has no meaning anymore but I think it's just a lot more subtle and if you look into it you discover more and more. I'm not saying you need to get into right now but the world of TOP is so much bigger than you can imagine. Every song is part of a story line of him battling his feelings and it gets pretty crazy. Great vid btw!
Tyler wrote also "drawn" and "just like yesterday" when he was teenager, before be singer of twenty one pilots. They are some of my favorites depressing songs, and my advice is listening to
you shoild really check out Suicideboys. some song to start are “…and to those i love, thank you for sticking around”, “whispers indistinctly”, and “the number you have dialed is not in service”. rich lyrics and crazy flows.
the best song that is also from this same album is called taxi cab it’s one of the lead singer tyler’s favorite verses he’s ever written the bridge of the song you should definitely check that one out!

Thank you for taking this music seriously and looking at them gently and with an open mind. I know it's just pop music and it would be easy to dismiss it as silly, but it has a lot of significance for a lot of us
The water is faith in God, and the desert is his mental health. That’s why at the beginning he says he hasn’t been the best of “sons”. As a child of God.
in context of the rest of their self-titled album, i love this song and story. that entire album is a masterpiece telling the story of struggling with faith in God, and struggling with any “demons” you may be facing. even if you don’t believe in God you can still find yourself and relate your own struggles to their music and lyrics. as someone who has struggled with faith and my mental struggles, this album means so much to me.
So Tyler Joseph is a very religious person especially back then and a lot of his songs have to do with his relationship with God. The doubt he has in his own faith in the fact that he isn’t a good “son”. He’s in a constant struggle of his doubt about his place and what he believes is God‘s plan. In here, he sings about how he doesn’t have a drop of “you” (God) and how he feels empty without him. Almost as if his life didn’t have meaning with his depression. But he still holds onto his belief in God. He sings in another song, “ don’t forget about me, cause even when I doubt you, I’m no good without you”. Really a poet and an amazing musician. Loved the video! And hope to see more :)
@@ReactionTherapyOfficial thank you for taking the time to respond and read everyone’s comments! You really do make great videos and are a side of UA-cam that is positive!
I have a suggestion that would be interesting to see on your channel! "Anziety" and "Take it back" by logic. Those are deeply emotional songs that personally helped me
To me this song has to deal with his depression and happniess. The desert is his mind, the drop that he i reffering to is his happnies. When he mentions life( "I haven't found a drop of life.") it's talking about how depressed people usualy have a harder time with motovation, idea's, and just happniess. He talks about how he was running through the sand with the water in his hand, this atleast to me represents how he is trying to not fall back into depression. Again when he says "the waves mean nothing to me." he's saying that all he needs is just that drop of happniess to keep afloat. Then he talks about how the sand (his depression) slows him down and the water in his hand (his happniess) will drain. Then he says "im just being dramatic agian as an addict with a pen who'se spinelss and pretend." that to me is him talking to others about his drepression and not being open about it and then he talks about "but you specialise in dieing, you hear me screaming father so wash me with your water." is him trying to take his life. Conclusion I find this interpretation verry basic and doesnt scratch the surface of the meaning. This is a great song and I cannot wait to watch the Rest of Reaction Therapy's video's to get a further sense of were he is coming from. All in all, Basic not deep enough.
So happy to see so many people mentioning this is a song he is singing to God. And yes, he's a Christian and a lot if not all of his songs are tied to his faith.
I think a lot of Tyler's songs are either talking about or to God, and I think this is one of those. He says "we haven't talked in quite some time". This is something that people who pray infrequently will often say when they pray to God - like "sorry that I've been forgetting to pray". Then he says "I haven't been the best of sons" and "You'll hear me screaming 'Father' and I'm lying here just crying, so wash me with your water." This is that point in the cycle of addiction where the addict reaches rock bottom and cries out to God. Being washed with water is a reference to baptism, which symbolizes dying to the flesh and being reborn of the spirit, with water representing the Holy Spirit." However, the desperation of his cries for water tells me that he's really crying out for LOVE that he so desperately wants to feel but hasn't found a drop of, in part because he doesn't feel he deserves it. He's crying out, saying "please save me from myself, because i can't."
This is actually a very tame version of the song. Listen to it with lyrics on the screen. It's louder and stronger. I think he held back at this point because the song wa so emotional to him (look at his eyes in the beginning of the video).
I definitely personally like and relate to the Christian side but I like how he writes so everyone can understand where they are at

Tyler doesn’t drink smoke or do drugs, it’s pure mental here .. nice reaction
Stay alive.
Great reaction. “Taxi Cab” is another great song of theirs, one of my all time favs from them.
Oh I second this. Beautiful imagery and a but underrated imo
He’s not actually an addict, he’s an addict w/ a pen addicted to the wind as it blows me back & forth…. He’s talking to God
Twenty one pilots whole self titled album is amazing. "Friend, please" and "trapdoor" would make great reactions!
I hope you become very successful on youtube, and I hope you have an amazing day 😁
This made my day!!! Thank you so much! I love doing these reactions and I’m grateful to have the job I do😊👍 thanks for watching😁
Awesome take Jessica! Thank you for this and thanks for watching😊👍
I know almost all of their songs and can sing along to most. I need to go see them in concert again it’s amazing.
I used to be able to sing all of their newer music but I don’t listen to them very much anymore
twenty one pilots helped me through all of my rough patches, hope to see you react to more of their wonderful songs! They've been my favorite band for almost five years now, I have a few requests: Neon Gravestones, Ode to Sleep, Guns For Hands, Friend Please, and Isle of Flightless Birds. Thank you for these videos! :)
Thank you for watching and for the comments 😊👍
Neon Gravestones would be epic from a therapist’s point of view! Great shout!
Hope you’re doing a bit better Lyric, hang in there!
🤍🥲 I cried writing this 😂, I love them so much 🥰
The same thing happened to me. Thank you for staying alive! Much love 💕 ||-//
Very nice comment, thank you for sharing your life with us!😊👍
You know I have to comment. TOP is one of my favorite things.
I’m sad I haven’t heard this one yet. But what a great one. I feel like the sand he is holding is all the things holding him back, and wants to release so it’s just pure water. Like letting go of the addictions that he knows is holding him back from being his best. Love this one so much
Well said Jacqui! You know this group well!!😊👍
tyjo isnt an addict lol, this is about his relationship with god
Thank you so much for this reaction! Twenty One Pilots is my all time favorite band. Their music have a very special place in my heart. If you want to react to more TOP songs I recommend: "Holding on to you", "Redecorate" or "Neon gravestones".
this is the song that helps me through all my rough patches. neon gravestones would be amazing for you to react to and see a therapists point of view from :)
You bring the beautiful side out of the music most of us enjoy daily. We can’t thank you enough for your educated and amazing perspective. I hope your night goes amazing keep up the great work!
Thank you for these awesome words! Made my day😊👍
@@ReactionTherapyOfficial Your videos make my night every night! @@sillyrabbittrfk3657 hope you’re doing ok, I’ve struggled with similar issues myself in the past, but getting help was the best thing I could’ve done. It took a few different doctors/support groups/medications - I know this combo isn’t for everyone, but it really helped me. It’s not a quick process, but honestly, things can get better.
I’m also a huge tøp fan and agree, their show is like nothing else I’ve ever experienced! Music truly helps change and save lives!
@@sillyrabbittrfk3657 thank you so much for the kind words, they are the reason I do what I do! This made my day😁😁
Twenty one pilots have come such a long way since this era. You can physically see it through Tyler’s performances throughout the years as well as the change of lyrics in their newer music. Every song has its own story. I’m just as emotionally invested in them now as I was back then. I love seeing people discover them, it’s like our own little world with their music especially when you see them live.
Thanks for reacting to them, it’s super cool :)
Well said grace, thanks for sharing that! And thanks for watching😊👍

It's great to see you reacting to an old twenty one pilots' song. I would be great to see a reaction to "The Pantaloon". This song means so much to me and helps me when I feel lost and lonely.

I would love to see "Cut my lip", "Holding on to you" , "Heavy Dirty Soul" and "Kitchen Sink!!!!!" "My Blood is a good one too!"
Hey tom, theres a song called “save” by a young 17 year old tyler joseph thats only on UA-cam that you should really check out its a very therapeutic song imo, hope you see this!
Sounds interesting! I might have to check that out😊👍
Save, Drown, and Hole In the Ground are all great songs from that album I'd love to hear your breakdown on any of those.
I love his solo album too its so emotional
Absolutely love this band. Went to a small show they had in Chicago last year and it was amazing. I couldn't even hear Tyler over the crowd. Everyone there was so emotionally invested into the songs. It was surreal. It seemed like half the crowd was crying at one point.
Before I even watch, this will be good. One of my favourite performances from them in its simplicity .
Lovley reaction ❤️ more NF and Twenty one pilots please ❤️

You are really one of the only youtubers I actually still watch
ooooh addict with a pen is an old one i'm surprised but really really glad it's getting more attention. it's one of my favorites.
my favorite twenty one pilots song. such a raw, beautiful, amazing song 😭😭😭
if you’re going to react to more tøp songs i recommend holding on to you, redecorare or taxi cab. thank you, your video are really cool!
Your channel is close to my heart for a lot of reasons - but one of the biggest draws is your relationship with Nick and how you guys are bonding even more through music! I have a similar relationship with my son, he’s 15 so a bit younger than Nick and he shows me the ‘newer’ generation of rappers like XXX, Juice Wrld, Peep etc and I introduce him to artists I’ve grown up, from the ‘golden age’ of hip hop in the 80’s and 90’s!
@@scottishemmaa2457 I am an 80's guy so that is music I really love! We are going to see Elton John in concert next weekend!!!
@@tomstevenslpcrpt aghhh!!! Tom - you’ll LOVE it!!! Such a great entertainer!!! I’ve seen Elton twice, once on his own and once with George Michael before he passed!
I’m lucky enough to have attended upwards of 400 shows over the last 30 years - there are a couple of stand outs among them - Queen were amazing, George Michael and Elton John were so good, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, Eminem is also a legend live - but the best by far was twenty one pilots! And I never thought I’d say that! You’ll have a ton of requests to get through, but when you manage to check out some of their live shows, your mind will be blown!
As someone who approaches these kinds of things from the emotional connection it’s very gratifying to have someone break it down on a rational level and validates the feelings their songs Help express
the song is basically a prayer. Hence "desert of my mind" as a religious refrence.
Excellent video, I just love this song. Maybe on the next video you can analyze 'trees', also from twenty one pilots. Greetings from Mexico.
And imo the psychology behind the scenario would be fantastic for you to analyze.
i love your twenty one pilot reactions. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Loving this TøP Series of yours try Neon Gravestones it's does allot with suicide in today's society
Maybe his water is writing music and he struggles with writers block
A lot of Tøp’s music is meant to be interpreted how you see it and theirs tons of ways to interpret. I see this song as not only a biblical song but using writing his songs as a form of escape. That’s soemthing that’s truly great about Tyler’s writing, it holds a different message for everyone. A whole concert could be singing along and it would each have a different meaning.
Nice! You must see Trees...Live at the Fox Theater...it's the song they end their shows with...super high energy fun!!!
So many people want to $uicideBoy$ these days so I’m sure it won’t be long before we get to them!😊👍

Addict with a pen means he writes a lot. With a pen to the paper
the best song that is also from this same album is called taxi cab it’s one of the lead singer tyler’s favorite verses he’s ever written the bridge of the song you should definitely check that one out!

This video made me find your channel and subscribe! I watched all of your Twenty One Pilots reviews!

I would love to see you do Taxi Cab by TOP next!!
Front porch step - island of a misfit boy is a great song you'd like or front porch step - drown
in context of the rest of their self-titled album, i love this song and story. that entire album is a masterpiece telling the story of struggling with faith in God, and struggling with any “demons” you may be facing. even if you don’t believe in God you can still find yourself and relate your own struggles to their music and lyrics. as someone who has struggled with faith and my mental struggles, this album means so much to me.

@@ReactionTherapyOfficial Interlude goes along with Hate Myself so you need to listen to those two together. Interlude then Hate Myself. Much love 💕

Sounds good! Nice request!😊👍
Thats a great song, you should react to ode to sleep, nice video, saludos👍
Conclusion
I find this interpretation verry basic and doesnt scratch the surface of the meaning.
He's crying out, saying "please save me from myself, because i can't."
hope you could do Friend Please, Truce, Neon Gravestones, and more of their songs!
You have to do Ode to sleep! Amazing song!
A car, a torch, a death by twenty one pilots is another song you should react to
interesting thing to do... plus i love therapy too. good work
This is actually a very tame version of the song. Listen to it with lyrics on the screen. It's louder and stronger. I think he held back at this point because the song wa so emotional to him (look at his eyes in the beginning of the video).
