For a long time, after hearing they had religious undertones, I tried to deny that their music was Christian oriented. My youth was spent having my mom try to have me swap out my secular music choices with "cool" Christian rock bands. I did not have the faith she wanted me to have, I still don't. But over time I couldn't deny Tyler's writing definitely had faith undertones. I think what doesn't turn me off to this is that 1) he didn't shove it in your face and leaves it open to interpretation, as you said, and 2) the lyrics are often about his struggle in his faith. I only learned as an adult that almost everyone struggles in their faith. I felt like I was the only one at church that did and I was an outlier and I didn't belong. But I heard my mom's pastor say in a sermon that he even struggles, I all of a sudden felt like I was not alone in that. So, now I really appreciate the questions put out there about mental health and religion. I can understand why someone who believes in God would ask Him how He could allow him to be made with a broken brain. Why was he given this extra burden to bear. And finding any deity or person or relationship or therapist to direct these questions to or to lean on in rough times and to have faith in that they will help bring us through is something we all need.

My father was a pastor and kept trying to get me to stop listening to rock music and he tried to push a bunch of Christian artists that frankly weren’t good 🙄🤦‍♀️ If anything, that pressure made it hard for me to even give other Christian artists a chance. And not only that, it pushed me even deeper into secular music that my dad certainly wouldn’t approve of 😹 But for me, the music has to hit me emotionally first and then diving deeper into the lyrics can add another level of connection.
When I started to listen to TØP, I had no idea they were Christian. I really appreciate Tyler’s approach and I think he has been able to share his gifts much more broadly than if their music got a “Christian rock band” label. He meets people where they are and shares a message that is deeply personal and meaningful in hopes of helping others … which to me, is what Christianity should represent. Many of the Psalms are David questioning his faith, and the Bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart ❤️ I believe God wants us to bring our full selves to him, even when we feel lost and trapped in the desert of our minds ||-//

Their earlier work is very heavy on the lyrics, and the live performances are just as emotional. You can literally spend hours watching their videos and not get tired. There are several sessions out there that are worth watching.
The songs "Kitchen Sink" and "Friend Please" (there's a fan video made for this song that is just marvelous) might make you feel things just like this one.
The earlier songs are not part of the "story", but gives you context of how deep the lyrics are going to be in future works, and a view of Tyler's mindset and struggles.

11:15 As someone who identifies as agnostic; I listened to this song and this album as a way to cope with really bad thoughts and feelings and just interpreted as him speaking to someone without getting a response and wishing to not feel alone anymore.
It took 5 ish years for someone to tell me that it was all about him praying and it was all religious music, listen to it occasionally but def not as much as I used to 🤷🏻‍♂️ mostly cause I like their blurry face/trench album more

One of my favorites. Check out the UG Studios live version of this song on UA-cam, you will love it. Lot's of religious references in Tyler's writing. I believe he keeps his beliefs private publicly. But either way, it wouldnt matter to me. As a non-religious person myself, here I am in the comments of a christian youtube channel and my favorite artists are TOP and NF, who are clearly christians in my eyes. And I'm cool with it. This is early Tyler songwriting from the self titled album and he really lays his soul bare. A similarly written track from this album which is a favorite of mine is Fall Away. • @GarnetJ
    @GarnetJ Рік тому +11

This song is one of my favorites based on the lyrical content. The imagery got me through a really rough time in my life. So it will always have deep meaning for me.
This is one of Tyler’s earlier songs when he wrote music as a way to work through issues of his faith and pretty severe mental health issues, including suicidal thoughts and self-harm. His music touches people so deeply because he’s been there. He understands the battle against the darkness and the desperate struggle to find the light in the midst of the storm.
I agree with the recommendation to check out the Live from UG Studio version. It’s not Tyler’s best vocals, but it is powerful because it is 100% raw emotion. And it’s clear from his performance that he’s talking to God, because he looks up very intentionally a few times. But I think others could interpret it more broadly to represent their journey through the desert of whatever they are struggling with: isolation, addiction, broken relationships with family, mental health issues, etc. Searching desperately for whatever the water represents is a universal longing. Water is life and it can also represent meaning, purpose, or the search for connection and love. As a Christian, all those paths lead me closer to God. But for Tyler, he is fine if non-believers find solace in using his music with other interpretations.

    • @TrevandErin
      @TrevandErin  Рік тому +3

I think that's the best way to be as an artist make music that helps everyone. Not everyone will be a Christian and sometimes that can't be helped. BUT he's still helping that person be better and feel better

So I’m loving your reactions, I love seeing others ‘get’ top & also love the music style so much. In saying that I love that ‘getting’ their music can come from so many places. I am not religious or have any belief but I can appreciate peoples need to. I definitely see the connection in Tyler’s lyrics but I really appreciate they are written in a way that one can connect to it in a different level.
For me it’s the acknowledgment & connection to mental health but that even though it points out the struggles there is always a positive side to it, the you can make it & we all struggle but we can survive this if we keep up the fight. So how do I relate to the parts that refer to searching for God or questioning his faith? For me it’s myself - remembering not to lose myself in life, what I truly am to myself & to have faith in that. As a wife, a mother, a daughter even an employee I often feel that I give so much to everyone else I forget who I am. So this song & especially Trees which I’m sure will be heard by you very soon- it’s a very important song - is reminding me to be present in myself.
That’s how this non Christian relates to tøp & why I ‘stay alive’.

My interpretation of the song: Tyler grew up Christian and as a child it's easy to have your cup filled with faith but as he grew older he grew more distant from the routines of the church and he felt that his cup of faith would be enough but as more time passed life took it's toll more and more on his faith and his mental health to the point of him crying out for his cup to be refilled.

    Lovley reaction 💛
It's my lucky day.. two NF reactions and a TØP reaction 😍
Please react to the live version that many already suggested. There are some songs that's important to react to live. "Migraine in the live room" is one of them and Trees ☺️
I grow up in a cult and I think that's made me a non believer. I sometimes wish I could find something to believe in. But I think I can't.
I like the deep conversations NF and TØP have with God and at the same time with themselves, and how they can put it into words. I know that he talking to God in this song but my non Christian interpretation of most of their music is that he has a conversation with himself expressing his feelings in a creative way through music and connects with others (to not feel alone) and that makes him feel better.
Talking to yourself or God or fan's or therapist or all of them makes you grow and can help. 💛

I’m with you there, Hanna… I like that Tyler writes lyrics that can still fit the mold for the listener who doesn’t ascribe to those Christian beliefs.
It should be said that THIS song from the Live Room is phenomenally emotional and a must watch/react!
I see this song in the same way-the honesty and openness about his struggles with faith really speak to my heart as I went through the same thing… in the end, you can replace faith in god with faith in the strength of your own mind and human relationships with special people in your life to fill that void of aloneness that often leads to depression and anxiety.

The more you dive into them, the more you'll recognize some common themes. Water is definitely one of them. All the religious connotations apply, and for those without an organized religion base, so much still rings true in what Tyler conveys in his music. In this one, it can be anything outside yourself that you're looking for, searching for, seeking relief from. From addiction, to abuse, self-harm, insecurities, doubt, love, trust, faith, etc..., it all fits. This song is a perfect example of that because it means something different to me at different times in my life, or even just on different days. You get what you need when you need it. |-/ 🤍🤍

The sheer variety that twenty one pilots offers never ceases to amaze. I don’t believe you have reacted to any songs off of the album Trench nor their newest Scaled and Icy (nor regional at best but that’s more of a collection of demos, but it still has some good writing). You have reacted to songs off of 3 out of 6 projects from these guys. (Vessel, blurryface, and their self-titled which you reacted to a song only from in this video for the first time).
I’ll give one recommendation for each album/project!
twenty one pilots (self titled): Taxi Cab
    Regional at Best: Forest
    Vessel: Guns for Hands
    Blurryface: Goner
    Trench: Chlorine
    Scaled and Icy: Choker
honestly there may be good reason some people may have not been recommending some songs from later albums as they can be quite lore heavy which can be difficult to explain and also difficult to come up with which songs to really recommend to begin with but if you really want to ever start getting into the lore, do heavydirtysoul off blurryface, and then Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, and Levitate off Trench.
Or to make it simpler you could just react to like every song on each album chronologically and post each reaction (as an album or songs individually), as it may save us some time 🤷 especially since you’ve shown so much interest… But obviously do what you want, I know that’s a big ask.
sorry for the long comment, I’ve really been enjoying your reactions 🙏

If you really want to discover why Twenty One Pilots are who they are, I highly recommend buying the book All My Sons by Arthur Miller.
It is a screenplay so reading it might be annoying at first because each characters name is in front of the sentence/paragraph that is spoken. However, this story is also based upon a true story as well as being why Tyler Joseph named his band Twenty One Pilots. The ending will blow you away!! Maybe you should do a reaction on the book itself, something that no other UA-cam reactionist has done!! It, the book, is only a few dollars on eBay/Amazon. It is actually an amazing book, short, takes one hour tops to read.

I was never raised religious, and because I'm not from a Christian majority country, I didn't even pick up on the Christian terminology. I was really into twenty one pilots when I was 13-14. So as to why I liked these songs - they felt like an incredible articulation of my often blind and misguided attempts to feel better. It was never more than that - just the dramatic nature of these songs allowing feelings to be articulated without necessarily connecting them to any sort of tradition. And later, growing up and framing this all as a search for meaning, I stand by the claim that all schools of philosophy, all religions and all our personal attempts to make sense of it all, are trying to do the same thing using slightly different words. So this is definitely a meaning-searching song to me, with Christianity just happening to get the source of Tyler's vocabulary to treat this subject. My sources of vocabulary are different, but it's the same search for meaning, so it reasonates just as well.

Thanks for another reaction. Talk about goosebumps, you should check out the UG studio session version of 'Addict with a pen'. He shows a lot of emotion in it. I watched a live version in concert, Tyler broke down and cried during this song. ||-// 🌼|-/

@@TrevandErin Just got to watch the reaction, and yeah. Tyler just has that kind of voice that is not only clean, but he can convey so much emotion. I've heard a lot of music where the lyrics themselves are emotional, but the singer's voice just can't really convey the depth of it. But with Tyler, you can really hear it all. And this is one of the songs that when I hear it, I have this irrational urge to give Tyler a hug.
Also, it was Holding On To You. The song title you were trying to remember at the end. :)
Can't wait for you to deep dive into this ocean, as you put it. I can't remember if I've said it already or not, but as you listen to more of this particular album, you are in for one heck of a feels trip, and to this day, there are songs on it that I can not sing along to without tearing/choking up.
On another note, I have another potential song suggestion, and it's one that I have a personal connection to. The song is their cover of My Chemical Romance's song Cancer. I found it not long after I had lost my mom to leukemia, and it took me 6 tries to get through it completely. It's such a beautiful version of the song.

Check out the songs Tyler has done with Whittaker. They are straight forward Christian songs. “Lord if Glory” is a good one.
Also, react to his videos of him participating in the skits and performing at his churches Christmas Program several years back.

I also see it as the religious meaning but my second interpretation is it makes me feel like I’ve been a bad son to my mother and a bad brother to my sister, like literal rather then just the religious undertones.

Yah. The majority of songs are based in mental illness this one is a direct prayer to God from someone struggling with their faith because of their mental illness. This is one of their older songs. The religious undertones get more subtle the newer the music gets.

Yeah, my religious aunt doesn’t approve because she made the mistake of checking out Paladin Strait first. A very lore heavy music video. I love my aunt but she’s very judgmental of stuff and my mom thinks that she wouldn’t understand the subtleties either. I didn’t even want to tell my aunt about them but my mom did. My mom doesn’t listen to them but knows that I like them so I think she just wanted to tell her sister to see if she’ll like them to I guess

I have only heard this version once. The UG Studios sessions version is definitely worth a listen even if you don't react to it. I'm a Christian so that is the perspective I look at it from as well. I agree with your interpretation. John 4:13-14 Jesus said to her, everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." I'm not sure if this is what you were thinking but that's what came to my mind 😊

Absolutely from the Bible. John 4, woman at the well. Jesus: “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Woman: "Sir, give me this water."

  • @jasonlebeau1288

In the Bible, "water of life" is a metaphor representing the spiritual nourishment and salvation offered by Jesus Christ, signifying the life-giving power of God and the renewal that comes from accepting his teachings; most notably found in the Gospel of John, where Jesus speaks of "living water" to a Samaritan woman at a well, symbolizing the eternal life he provides to those who believe in him. I hope this brings more clarity to the song for you.
