Fantastic help this video is,I’ve been shown a different version of the turtle roll but can’t get anywhere with it.the way you have shown it looks much more productive and can’t wait to try it out 🙏🤙
This is the one and only useful turtle roll tutorial ive seen on youtube. I almost enjoy doing them now..almost...).I like to go with the full 360 roll but I sometimes find after a few rolls in a row the leash wraps around my legs so I still need to work on that......The main point that helped me was to go feet first and not be parallel with the board and the "jabbing" the wave action....No one seems to teach these points and theres alot of awful tutorials out there....If anyone asks about the turtle roll I point them to this tutorial...Hope to see more regular content....i like the classy way you have with words...)

Was out on a pretty big day yesterday, well at least for me. Waves were shoulder to head high and coming in very frequently, on after another. Your videos are very informative And helpful- thank you. Any tips on how do you manage the bigger waves once out in the line up? Not only catching the waves but avoiding and ducking them as well.
This is the hardest part of surfing is figuring out where to sit and how to catch waves. Practice and watching other surfers is how you will learn. Also getting a good surf coach who can sit next to you and help you pick waves helps to. Great video! I have had several surf instructors tell me to hug the board so that my body is parallel to it, and to pull the board's nose to my face so that there is direct, tight contact between the nose and my forehead or cheek. This seems frightening. What if the board knocks me out?! I guess that's why they emphasize the tight contact between the board and my face. This perpendicular maneuver seems more appealing to me. Is there a strong reason you guys teach the turtle roll this way as opposed to what I've described? Love your content by the way--thank you! I'm seriously eyeing one of these retreats :).
We like keep our body perpendicular because it helps keep you and your board in place. Otherwise you will be swept around with the board. We would love for you to join our retreats. Today's longboards are much lighter than the ones from the 60's. I've found that when rolling over I will sink the nose as much as I can so that the wave can't get under it and yank it out of my hands. It's like slamming the door shut. No matter what you have to hang on to a board that's a bit bigger than those around you.
My problem is when I simply roll over, my body will float up as well (can’t sink) can’t create an anchor, and it also means i cant seal my board properly, so I got flipped over by many waves So maybe the point is to jump into the water not just roll over?
I tried your method of jumping in the water before rolling, i kept floating up and creating huge gap under the board (it would make the board easily rip out of my hand)
I really like your detailed, coming-from-experience, approach.

The push forward and the dominant hand tips were items I haven't used when out. Def. noted these tips for the next session. Thanks for the video!
This is super helpful, thank you!
Question: what do people with contacts lenses do? Open eyes or keep em closed?😅
Changed my life

There are techniques for not turtle rolling if you have a big board. We will have to do a video on this.

Was this created?
Thank you for this nice video this really explained it in great detail - I'll now start stabbing haha
what if the wave presses the board down so much that it hits your head
what is the jab
It is when you thrust your board forward when you are rolling. It helps the board get through the wave and helps keep it moving forward.
Good luck not using your legs on anything bigger than a 2 ft wave...
What do you mean by that? Is your point that you should wrap your legs around the board so it doesn't get ripped out of your hands?
@@James-ip5gzI guess use the legs to press up the tail.
