Oh my gosh, I can’t overexaggerate with a difference just a slight twisting of the hips, putting out the right knee as made on my pop-up speed. I was always off-balance. My first popped up and now totally balanced as the wave starts. Excellent excellent advice on this video.
My girlfriend, then wife, a maniac surfer-girl taught, me to surf and was the first to tell me the pop-up was key, yet she never explained this method which, I recognize is done with such ease and quickness, its an innate and unconscious process in those that pick it up "from 'birth" as she did!! I was late to the scene and never got the chance to develop this skill, even though a windsurfer, sailor, scuba diver!! Now you make me want to get out there again and have another go at it!! Few recognize how demanding a sport it is!! Thanks 4 the gr8 analysis!!
I don't think I have seen an instruction video mention the positioning of the hips before. This was useful and opens the mind to adopting a different approach to getting up on a surfboard. Personally I think they should delete the term "Pop-Up" because it is a distracting phrase that encourages a rapid, often uncontrolled rise up to a standing position on a board. This is particularly for newbies trying to develop the correct muscle memory.
Absolutely! The single most helpful pop-up video I’ve ever encountered on the Internet. It’s amazing that at the various surf trainings none of the coaches have ever mentioned the importance of popping up to the side stance And keeping the hips lower than the head. It makes so much sense.Thank you!
Iam a surfer, i have taken almost 90 degree drops and its all about your core and timing and keeping your eyes looking in the direction you want to go.
It's not all "about your core and timing and keeping your eyes looking in the direction you want to go." Learning proper pop-up techniques is a highly important factor. Having super core strength and excellent timing won't likely guarantee you'll get to your feet if your pop-up technique isn't correct.
As a long time landlocked surfer - I usually only get out to surf 1-2x a year... this video very clearly showed me some of the problems with my pop-up - and how to fix them. Getting ready to head to Cabo in a few weeks, and this will greatly improve my "catch percentage". Thank you!
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you! I have been surfing for coming up to 10 years and have always struggled with going to my back knee first. This pop up video has hands down helped me overcome the hurdle that has halted my progress for years! Cannot thank you enough!!! Amazing feeling getting straight to my feet and onto the face after all these years.
I didn’t even realize how much I needed to improve my pop up until Tom-El did video analysis with me after one of our surf sessions at the retreat at Amaru in Nicaragua. Watching this video & practicing the swivel of my hips during my pop up has made such a difference in my surfing! Thank you so much Tom, Sharon, and the whole Ocean Monkeys Crew!!! You guys are the best. We can’t wait to see you again in Nica!!!
Thank you. I have had this recurring issue for 40+ years and now I get it. Turning your back foot turns your knee away from your chest allowing room for your front foot to pass through. Brilliant!
Undoubtedly the Most advanced tip on popup, hands down! I'm an intermediate plus surfer, and you put words on something I struggled to notice. Good job and thank you!!
THANK YOU! This video is a major breakthrough for my pop up problems! Like others I've watched too many other videos that ignored this, and went so far as discouraging landing rear foot first followed by front foot. Landing rear foot first is the gateway to opening the hips for a proper side stance. Now I can do rear foot front foot quickly enough so the front foot only lands a fraction longer than the rear foot, and it has allowed me to easily pop up on larger waves.
NICE SLOW MO!!! NICE VIDEO PRODUCTION!!! NICE EXPLANATIONS!!! NICE BODY POSITION ANGLES!!! NICE FOOTAGE!!! NICE MUSIC!!! NICE SUGGESTIONS!!! NICE CONTRIBUTION!!! THXXX FOR SHARING... Happy surfing from VIRGINIA BEACH, Kyle Watts
Thank you so much for this video. Every so often, an instructional video comes along which significantly advances my surfing. This is one of those exceptional tutorials!
Thank you - I'm 61 and have been surfing since I was 13. Ten years ago I crushed my right (back) leg ski racing and with limited range of motion I have struggled ever since to bring that leg forward under me the way I learned. The leg hack at 2:39 has helped enormously. So grateful!
It is interesting that even in the video you can see that the knee drags in the water when you do that. And I’d bet that her hips are much more flexible than mine (and yours?). That means that for us that knee would be dragging in the water even more. I know I can’t lie on my stomach and bring my knee forward while having it straight out to the side rather than downward (in the water). Hip mobility seems key for this method.
Finally a clear explanation of the mechanics. So obvious now. Struggled getting that front foot forward without doing a handstand to get my hips out of the way. This doesn't make it "easy", but at least it makes sense unlike other videos.
Dear Madame, I am a beginner since 2 years so I saw many and many videos, and this summer I discover and try your method to pop up seeing the red line and the green line on your video and it is ok for me because I did not not understand why I had pain on my back and no succeeds with my pops ups. So now, no more pain on my back and many pops ups ok ( not all , I have to work like you say ) Thank you for your work. Alain from France
Wow, amazing video, thanks! I've always struggled with popping up, I recently discovered it's mainly because I've always tried to pop straight up vs the more Auzzie pop up from the back foot, as I just don't have the hip flexibility to get my front foot where it needs to be without planting the back foot first (as I discovered when I started doing some yoga to try to improve flexibility) but watching this video I can see what I'm doing wrong now, I'm not rotating my hips at all, I land with my feet pointing forward, and always have a very sketchy start. I'm sure this will help! Thanks.
Excellent video, the pop up has been killing me. Especially when you're lucky to get one wave every 30 minutes when the line up is packed out here in SoCal.
The only way to get skilled at this in SoCal, is to go to less desirable spots where there are few people after the waves. They aren't the best waves, but you get better opportunities to hone your skills!
2.19 is exaltly my default. Thanks i 'm going to work on it. (I am a begonner 61 years old so need also to improve my flexibility) Thanks for this video :-)
Unless I missed it, what isn't pointed out is that the right foot initiates the pop-up (goofy would be the left foot) by pushing off the surfboard thus opening space for the left leg to pass forward toward the nose of the board which results from rotating the hips.
If you skateboard you know exactly how important it is to have your toes not facing the nose. With the water being so much more unstable, it's super critical to have your feet pointing towards the rails. Such a great video
It takes awhile for me to realize the importance of the motion of hips. My experience is that you must rotate your hips to keep them parallel to the board. When I do that, it is always successful.
Yeah, I have to remind myself to do this every once in a while, especially if I haven't been out on the water. Problem is I'm old and a little heavy for the board I'm on, so it's struggle enough just to catch the wave, and I have bad knees and a bad back, so twisting like this gives me pause. But when it works, it's great, so it's good you focused in on this specific aspect of the popup.
I had an Aloha swallow tail board that I was too heavy for it. I used to oscillate my front foot on a 9-3 clockwise motion in order to properly pop up. I never saw anyone popping up like me but the drop knee body boarders. it worked well on that board. I started shaping boards for my body type. I noticed I have a pop up similar to this but my head is a bit lower. It works well for me. I also grab the rails in smaller boards and not grab the rails on bigger longer boards. I hardly miss a pop unless I'm beat down.
Thank you for the Video! I was always struggle moving my front foot, Always had to use my knee to move it near my hands positions. Now turning my waist i can do it much more easily. So far it works at home perfectly, cannot wait to surf!
I was thinking the same thought.. I like this video and pointing out the hip turning. This seems most natural when going frontside. If you are "looking" down the line I think you turn the hips instinctively. However, backside is more difficult. Turning your hips away from where you are going while looking over your shoulder is not as natural a flow in my opinion.
Thanks guys, backside is surely more challenging, which makes the need for an accurate pop up technique looking down the line during the take off even more important. There are two backside frames in this video demonstrating how the head is free to look down the line in this stance also to the backside, we'll try to produce more of these frames in the future 🙏🙏
This is great for surfing forehand, but the twisting of the hips puts you off balance when looking down the wave on your backhand. Any comments on backhand waves?
Having hip mobility, core strength, general fitness and flexibility, and not being overweight are pretty important too let's face it.
I have watched over 100 videos to help my pop up - your view above the body showing the hips turned to the side has clicked with me! I get it!
Oh my gosh, I can’t overexaggerate with a difference just a slight twisting of the hips, putting out the right knee as made on my pop-up speed. I was always off-balance. My first popped up and now totally balanced as the wave starts. Excellent excellent advice on this video.

Hands down the best pop-up video, especially since this is the part that i've struggled with for years. Thank you for this!
My girlfriend, then wife, a maniac surfer-girl taught, me to surf and was the first to tell me the pop-up was key, yet she never explained this method which, I recognize is done with such ease and quickness, its an innate and unconscious process in those that pick it up "from 'birth" as she did!! I just started surfing a couple of days ago and this seems like it would fix all the mistakes I've been making. Thanks for making this video
This is by far the best video to improve your pop-up.

This makes so much sense yet haven’t heard it before. Cool video. Cheers.
Thanks so much. I’ve been stretching my hips and glutes to sort my pop up after surfing for 40+ years. The hip rotation tip is amazing!!!
Well done
I know I’m 61 and it never occurred to me but just twist my hips it’s made a gigantic difference in my pop-up speed.
... and you have singlehandedly solved what was a problem I could NEVER figure out! Thank you.

what a fantastic video for beginners in learning the pop up! I've learned the technique that should help me stand up for the first time soon.
I just did it successfully on my yoga mat and nothing hurt! Thank you!
Geeeeesh.....the best instruction tip ever!! The testament is the number of comments displayed. The useful information, game changer for me! Thank you
As a physical therapist i approve of this video.. great biomechanics instruction...

Outstanding job breaking down technique. The slow motion and overhead perspectives were excellent for showing details. Appreciate your efforts.
Finally a video that explains you the technique well!!

It works so good! Every time my girlfriend uses her hips I pop right up!
Brilliant, the first video that explains why so many of us are getting this wrong

Yep, proper technique with foot placement usually means that you’ll have a large “surfers knot” next to the large toe on your trailing foot.

2:55 I understood the concept when I started to focus my attention in rotating the right side of my hip (regular surfer), Thank you!
Excellent video and explanation - a game changer for my surfing pop up. Thanks!!!!
Wow. Great video. What a great approach to the pop up. I’ve never thought about it from this perspective. So helpful!
The best part for me is how the hips stay. I keep tumbling forward because my hips were so high. Love it!

This is great for surfing forehand, but the twisting of the hips puts you off balance when looking down the wave on your backhand. Any comments on backhand waves?
Wow great clear and concise tip. It’s been awhile since I’ve been out and this is a great motivator.
I really focus on the proper pop up now and crushing the waves on in Huntington Beach ca.😎🤘🏼 thanks!
