How to use your hips for a perfect pop up

- The pop-up is a critical moment in surfing, one that will often determine if you’ll be making the drop, or not.
A reasonable pop-up will probably do the job in forgiving conditions, that is - in small A-frame waves, but the real test of your pop-up is in heavy waves or tricky drops.
So you’re probably already familiar with the common tips, but there’s this one element that is rarely mentioned, and based on our experience - it actually solves a great deal of pop-up issues.

Having hip mobility, core strength, general fitness and flexibility, and not being overweight are pretty important too let's face it.
Hands down the best pop-up video, especially since this is the part that i've struggled with for years. Thank you for this!
Oh my gosh, I can’t overexaggerate with a difference just a slight twisting of the hips, putting out the right knee as made on my pop-up speed. I was always off-balance. My first popped up and now totally balanced as the wave starts. Excellent excellent advice on this video.
I've been surfing for 45 years. Best introduction surf video I've seen. Well done to you 👏
This is the most useful pop up video I’ve seen.
My girlfriend, then wife, a maniac surfer-girl taught, me to surf and was the first to tell me the pop-up was key, yet she never explained this method which, I recognize is done with such ease and quickness, its an innate and unconscious process in those that pick it up "from 'birth" as she did!! I was late to the scene and never got the chance to develop this skill, even though a windsurfer, sailor, scuba diver!! Now you make me want to get out there again and have another go at it!! Few recognize how demanding a sport it is!! Thanks 4 the gr8 analysis!!
I don't think I have seen an instruction video mention the positioning of the hips before. This was useful and opens the mind to adopting a different approach to getting up on a surfboard. Personally I think they should delete the term "Pop-Up" because it is a distracting phrase that encourages a rapid, often uncontrolled rise up to a standing position on a board. This is particularly for newbies trying to develop the correct muscle memory.
I can't believe there aren't more videos out there on this! EXCELLENT! TY
Absolutely! The single most helpful pop-up video I’ve ever encountered on the Internet. It’s amazing that at the various surf trainings none of the coaches have ever mentioned the importance of popping up to the side stance And keeping the hips lower than the head. It makes so much sense.Thank you!
Iam a surfer, i have taken almost 90 degree drops and its all about your core and timing and keeping your eyes looking in the direction you want to go.
It's not all "about your core and timing and keeping your eyes looking in the direction you want to go." Learning proper pop-up techniques is a highly important factor. Having super core strength and excellent timing won't likely guarantee you'll get to your feet if your pop-up technique isn't correct.
Please have a Left Footed model!!!
Great tip to try thank you
95% of pop up issues are a 'looking issue' thats a fact

Liked. Saved. Shared. Wow and thank you one million times for this high quality training!!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you! I have been surfing for coming up to 10 years and have always struggled with going to my back knee first. This pop up video has hands down helped me overcome the hurdle that has halted my progress for years! Cannot thank you enough!!! Amazing feeling getting straight to my feet and onto the face after all these years.
I just started surfing a couple of days ago and this seems like it would fix all the mistakes I've been making. Thanks for making this video
This makes so much sense yet haven’t heard it before. Cool video. Cheers.
Excellent video! The most helpful instruction which I have been needing for 20 years!
As a long time landlocked surfer - I usually only get out to surf 1-2x a year... this video very clearly showed me some of the problems with my pop-up - and how to fix them. Getting ready to head to Cabo in a few weeks, and this will greatly improve my "catch percentage". Thank you!
Never thought I'd get this deep into surfing...
Best instructional video I have seen. Great job.
Undoubtedly the Most advanced tip on popup, hands down!
I'm an intermediate plus surfer, and you put words on something I struggled to notice. Good job and thank you!!
... and you have singlehandedly solved what was a problem I could NEVER figure out! Thank you.
also besides being a great demonstrator she's adorable!
Outstanding job breaking down technique. The slow motion and overhead perspectives were excellent for showing details. Appreciate your efforts.
Thank you. I have had this recurring issue for 40+ years and now I get it. Turning your back foot turns your knee away from your chest allowing room for your front foot to pass through. Brilliant!
Thanks so much. I’ve been stretching my hips and glutes to sort my pop up after surfing for 40+ years. The hip rotation tip is amazing!!!
Well done
I know I’m 61 and it never occurred to me but just twist my hips it’s made a gigantic difference in my pop-up speed.
Wow. Great video. What a great approach to the pop up. I’ve never thought about it from this perspective. So helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. Every so often, an instructional video comes along which significantly advances my surfing. This is one of those exceptional tutorials!
I've completely neglected "the hips concept" during the pop-up. Thank you so much for the insight.
Hands down the best video I’ve seen for the Pop up! Thank you 🙏🏼
THANK YOU! This video is a major breakthrough for my pop up problems! Like others I've watched too many other videos that ignored this, and went so far as discouraging landing rear foot first followed by front foot. Landing rear foot first is the gateway to opening the hips for a proper side stance. Now I can do rear foot front foot quickly enough so the front foot only lands a fraction longer than the rear foot, and it has allowed me to easily pop up on larger waves.
Wow, amazing video, thanks! I've always struggled with popping up, I recently discovered it's mainly because I've always tried to pop straight up vs the more Auzzie pop up from the back foot, as I just don't have the hip flexibility to get my front foot where it needs to be without planting the back foot first (as I discovered when I started doing some yoga to try to improve flexibility) but watching this video I can see what I'm doing wrong now, I'm not rotating my hips at all, I land with my feet pointing forward, and always have a very sketchy start. I'm sure this will help! Thanks.
Great video very well explained I don’t understand why she doesn’t have tens of thousands more views…..Well done and thank you it’s helped me.
Excellent video and explanation - a game changer for my surfing pop up. Thanks!!!!
what a fantastic video for beginners in learning the pop up! I've learned the technique that should help me stand up for the first time soon.
Finally a video that explains you the technique well!!
As an older guy getting back into it for some personal reasons this was very helpful thank you.
Geeeeesh.....the best instruction tip ever!! The testament is the number of comments displayed. The useful information, game changer for me! Thank you
This is the best explanation of the pop up I have seen.....Thanks.
This tip is absolutely gold😊😎🤙🤙🤙Thankyou so much for putting this out there for all us surfers🙏💚💛👋🇦🇺
this was excellent!! So simple, but so helpful. I've never understoon why some of my popups felt perfect and some felt unstable. thank you!!
very helpful video. I immediately improved my surfing by following the advice presented here.
Thank you - I'm 61 and have been surfing since I was 13. Ten years ago I crushed my right (back) leg ski racing and with limited range of motion I have struggled ever since to bring that leg forward under me the way I learned. The leg hack at 2:39 has helped enormously. So grateful!
It is interesting that even in the video you can see that the knee drags in the water when you do that. And I’d bet that her hips are much more flexible than mine (and yours?). That means that for us that knee would be dragging in the water even more. I know I can’t lie on my stomach and bring my knee forward while having it straight out to the side rather than downward (in the water).
Hip mobility seems key for this method.
Logical, practical, applicable, really good stuff. Good visuals, as well.
Thank you.
I just did it successfully on my yoga mat and nothing hurt! Thank you!
This was honestly a great help. Great video!
This is by far, the best tut!!! Thank you so much!!!
Finally a clear explanation of the mechanics. So obvious now. Struggled getting that front foot forward without doing a handstand to get my hips out of the way. This doesn't make it "easy", but at least it makes sense unlike other videos.
Thank you! This explains the pop-up brilliantly.
i dont have a surfboard to practice on the carpet so i will be crouching like gollum on a walmart bodyboard
As a physical therapist i approve of this video.. great biomechanics instruction...
This literally was a lightbulb moment for me, thank you for sharing!!
Océan Monkeys ! El mejor video de UA-cam de como subir a la tabla !! Saludos desde Argentina !!
Wow! I am going practice this. This was a clean explanation that made lots of sense. Thank you! You have a new subscriber. 😀
If you skateboard you know exactly how important it is to have your toes not facing the nose. With the water being so much more unstable, it's super critical to have your feet pointing towards the rails. Such a great video
Yep, proper technique with foot placement usually means that you’ll have a large “surfers knot” next to the large toe on your trailing foot.
@@richardstevens5961 also known as a miserable bloody lump that looks like a bunion! :D
Best video I’ve watched yet and I’ve watched a ton!!
Thank you for the Video! I was always struggle moving my front foot, Always had to use my knee to move it near my hands positions. Now turning my waist i can do it much more easily. So far it works at home perfectly, cannot wait to surf!
Yesss. Finally. Crucial advice, nicely explained
wow finally finally. I am on way to get my first perfect pop up. thank you!
This is what Ive been doing badly ...72 years old and will try this ....Thx
This is the best video I've ever seen! Thank you thank you thank you
Excellent video, the pop up has been killing me. Especially when you're lucky to get one wave every 30 minutes when the line up is packed out here in SoCal.
The only way to get skilled at this in SoCal, is to go to less desirable spots where there are few people after the waves. They aren't the best waves, but you get better opportunities to hone your skills!
Yeah, one of the best pop-up videos I've ever seen!
Yeah, I have to remind myself to do this every once in a while, especially if I haven't been out on the water. Problem is I'm old and a little heavy for the board I'm on, so it's struggle enough just to catch the wave, and I have bad knees and a bad back, so twisting like this gives me pause. But when it works, it's great, so it's good you focused in on this specific aspect of the popup.
Brilliant instruction. Great tip. Thank you.
2:55 I understood the concept when I started to focus my attention in rotating the right side of my hip (regular surfer), Thank you!
Dear Madame, I am a beginner since 2 years so I saw many and many videos, and this summer I discover and try your method to pop up seeing the red line and the green line on your video and it is ok for me because I did not not understand why I had pain on my back and no succeeds with my pops ups. So now, no more pain on my back and many pops ups ok ( not all , I have to work like you say ) Thank you for your work. Alain from France
Thank you for this tip!!! Very useful and based on science.
Great video, thanks makes it clear. Now to do it regularly. Hey thanks!
Great advice! This was the problem for me.. thank you for this video! 🙏
We needed this Golden video. Thank you
Super helpful! Like a golf swing You can always improve your pop
That's the best pop up video that I have watched so far!
Where have you been all my life? Can't wait to try this.
Brilliant, the first video that explains why so many of us are getting this wrong
Single most useful pop up video Iʻve seen.
Just awesome, at last something so simple and I’ve got it 🤩 🙏🏾
great video, thank you very much. It is wonderfully clearly explained.
awesome, I'm a newbie and I can't wait to try this, thanks
Awesome video! So helpful. Thanks!
That was an amazing lesson. Thank you!
Excellent video - many thanks for sharing
This is great. I can't wait to try this, thanks.
Great breakdown of the... pop-up!
Wasn’t looking for this, but it’s a good one and glad i watched. Hopefully i’ll flounder less. 🤙
Thank you for this video🎸 Pop-up or getting on the wave is key to surfing❤️🌊🌈 P.S. You’re gonna make me buy surfboard again🙂
Best advise so far. Cheers
Super useful! Thank you for this !!
I've been surfing badly since 2001. I'm still like a beginner. Hopefully, this will help.
Best pop up video I’ve seen yet 👍👍
I really focus on the proper pop up now and crushing the waves on in Huntington Beach ca.😎🤘🏼 thanks!
Unless I missed it, what isn't pointed out is that the right foot initiates the pop-up (goofy would be the left foot) by pushing off the surfboard thus opening space for the left leg to pass forward toward the nose of the board which results from rotating the hips.
Great vid and explanation. TY!
It takes awhile for me to realize the importance of the motion of hips. My experience is that you must rotate your hips to keep them parallel to the board. When I do that, it is always successful.
Amazing. Finally. Thank you!
The best part for me is how the hips stay. I keep tumbling forward because my hips were so high. Love it!
Awesome! Great instructor, making it look easy. Need to get some lessons from her I think. O.
Excellent video. This should save a lot of pearls and side bailing.
Thank you for this great video!
gracias muy buena explicación gráfica buen video
Wow freaking amazing wisdom in this!
Awesome video!! Thank you.
Great video thank you
