    I surf a 9'6". I always put some wax on the rails near the nose end but not at the nose. For me it helps gripping the board through the turtling maneuver. I've also found that depending on where your position is in the breaking wave I've found it helpful to pull the nose slightly under so when the wave breaks on top of you you can use some of the wave's energy hitting the tail end to help thrust you out the back. Of course, then there's those times where you think you're doing everything right but the wave rips the board right out of your hands and you go through a tumble in the washing machine.

    One more tip on the Pop Over: if you pull the board straight down into the water as you sit on it just before the wave comes, it will rebound and lift you up and over the wave. I have got it down so that I pull very hard down on the board and then keep my body up towards the nose as it pops up out of the water an over the wave. I have been surprised by how big a wave this has worked on. At least twice the size of what you see here.

      The technique in this video only work with small waves. With more powerful waves you need to position your body vertical below the water, forming a 90° angle with your board.

    What is the best technique for big waves. I imagine both the punch through and glide over will be impossible. But can the turtle roll work for 2 meter waves?

    • @phantomstranger1125
      @phantomstranger1125 4 роки тому +2

      No that's the problem with turtle rolling. It won't work for anything above like 2 meters. Even 2 meters is a stretch. You will definitely get pummeled underneath the waves.

    • @RubyMeade
      @RubyMeade  3 роки тому

      Yeah, its a challenge. I agree - both techniques will have to be pretty perfect to survive bigger waves if at all. Otherwise. I try and strategise my paddle out. Paddling hard in between sets and occasionally copping one on the head when its unavoidable.

    • @MrTakeLP
      @MrTakeLP 5 років тому +3

      Andrew Stavrou hey Bro 🤙🏽 so it’s Not my Video but I can still answer you. A longboard has a lot of volume so you can’t push it underneath the water with a duck dive. For a duck dive you need a smaller board more like a short board or something like that size.
      Aloha

    • @Rolothe1st
      @Rolothe1st 5 років тому

      @@MrTakeLP Thank you for the answer bro, much appreciated. I'm just getting into surfing out in the UK. Seeing older surf videos, longboarders are surfing pretty big waves. How do they paddle out back in massive surf? Even if they time the set end perfect and paddle like crazy it is still difficult. Any help would be appreciated bro. Cheers from London

    • @jackquarantillo5192
      @jackquarantillo5192 4 роки тому +4

      @@Rolothe1st most often, when you see longboarding in huge surf, it is somewhere where there's a channel, like a reef or point break. Surfers essentially paddle out around the breakers. Big surf on a longboard at a beach break can be next to impossible. Turtle roll, time the sets to paddle through during a lull, and look for a rip current to help you.
      Stay stoked!

    • @RubyMeade
      @RubyMeade  3 роки тому

      There is no physical way I have enough weight to sink a board with so much volume so unfortunately I am unable to do that (most people are unless they are super large with thin longboards) This is a 9'1 not sure of other measurements sorry as they have faded on the board
