On the Bosch alternator you don't have to do anything to have it self energizing, just the remanent magnetism is enough to start charging as long it spins at about 3000 RPM. your use of a small battery is a good idea but this can't be left alone because of the decay of the battery, better to use a centrifugial switch and the battery bank to excite the alternator if you intent to use it in a windmill setup. good video.
I cut a 1/2 inch socket extension and machined it down so it fitted into a drill. Then you can put any socket onto the drill to turn the alternator. I also used an old lawnmower engine to test alternators. I`ve made my own pushbike generator too lol. I was lucky enough to work at Valeo repairing alternators and starter motors so I could get all the spares I wanted.
The problem here is that unlike generators, alternators don't retain residual magnetism. Although small magnets can be incorporated into the rotor to begin the process of producing current, they must be small enough not to allow the unit to run wild. Simple adjustable current limiters can then be used to regulate total output while more advanced regulators can provide rotor current in regard to rotor speed.
The principle is sound. However there will be current drawn from the battery all the time the alternator is not spinning, so that battery will get discharged very quickly if left connected when not in use. You need a method so that the battery is connected only when the alternator is spinning. Also with the charge circuit you intend to provide, you must be careful to follow the recommended charge method for lithium batteries. Incorrect charging will result in the battery being destroyed and possibly even catching fire. The magnets are of course only used as a means to connect wires to the battery. A battery holder would be a far better way to do this. Or hold the 2 wires in place using an elastic band around the + and - terminals instead of magnets.

Most people here probably don´t understand what you mean by "self excited", erroneously, they think it´s "free Energy". No people, it simply means the rotor´s feed is provided by the Alternator, but this happens in most cars. There is a way to generate free electricity from an Alternator, but this is not it. It consists of defeating the Lenz effect. Which is an obscure secret.

You should never connect an ammeter directly across the output terminals of the generator as this is not a good test for the amperage of the generator. The ammeter on its own provides a short circuit and so very little voltage is required to get a high current. The self-excitation could be improved through magnetizing the rotor or adding a permanent magnet into the rotor. In a self-excited generator, the value of the resistance of the field has to be related to the voltage characteristic of the generator. There is more than simply connecting the output to the field!
Most new alternators (except an external regulator alt such as a Chrysler Corp alt as almost all of theirs are external reg. ) are self exciting when the rpm reaches around 2000 rpm or so and will continue to work till the rpm drops below 400. Most gm alts have a S/E reg in them now. Wind generators don’t like too much amperage as it take 5 BP to produce 100 amps. It’s better to stay under the 30 amp range. I use a Nippon Denso 12180SE Lester number which is 25 amps with a S/E reg installed. It’s small and can spin up to 10,000 rpm.

Hullo, I enjoy your videos. Am experimenting on a Toyota land cruiser alternator. I want to make 220V AC with use of AC motor. What is the best way of making the alternator self exciting in this case. Regards. Eric
Self exited means a small voltage turns it on.Its a electromagnet and is turned on when ignition is on.Exicted means it turns on only. This small voltage has nothing to do with output.Tinker toys or building blocks might suit him better.
I am thinking to build mine, and I will convert it to wind turbine, but I am thinking if the 3.7v battery emptied, not enough to excite the rotor so I need to buy new battery again?
But this is a well known thing by engineers and auto repairmen, the exciting voltage for the rotor comes from the ignition switch, but goes through the regulator built right into the alternator.
3.7 volt 18650 wont magnetize the core of a 12 volt system lol... you repair man? niether am I but I know an electromagnetic core isn't regulated mostly because the line is dirrectly off the FUSE BOX of 99% of the vehicles of there... wow research :-)
Howdy. Technically that is not self exciting. It uses a battery to magnetize the rotor. Old car DC dynamos were self exciting. The trouble is to generate enough voltage to overcome the 6 pulse bridge rectifier forward voltage of 2x0,7V = 1,4 V. If the bridge is 3 pulse the forward voltage to overcome is 0,7 V. The residual magnetism in the rotor seldom induces enough voltage to overcome. 3 phase induction motors are sometimes used in petrol generators to produce 115 V or 230 V 3 phase AC. The trick is to use capacitors across the poles to generate exactly the same amount of capacitive reactive current as the stator produces inductive reactive current. Usually this setup is self exciting. If not a 1,5V dry cell may be momentarily connected over any poles to start the self exciting. Alternatively a magnet may be placed on the stator for a moment. I wonder if a magnet on the pulley would be enough for the induction to overcome the rectifier forward voltage ? I might try that. One problem could be over excitation at high revolutions althoug the regulator has cut off the rotor current. Regards.
Howdy again. Experimentation showed that outer excitation needs be about 2 V to the rotor. The current needs be about 200 - 300 mA. After that the alternator will self excite up. Magnets had no effect whatsoever. A small solar panel may be used to deliver constant pre-excitation. Only works in daylight, of course. Another solution may be to let some kind of wind hinge operate a micro switch to excite a relay that connects 12 V to the rotor. Regards.

I need a trick similar like this to test some old alternators I bought on used parts.
Very good video...intillegent
Did you tear down the regulator?
If there isn't the regulator how can it keep the output at 12 volts?

Regards.
For charging the lithium battery. Simply add in a 5a fuse and a 12v car plug usb charger.
There is a screw terminal on the regulation disk unused that will make a negative screw terminal with regulation diodes I'm use already
What is purpose of cut out attached between alternator n battery in the car?
if you are using led brake lights without some kind of voltage equalizer, it can keep your alternator form charging your battery
I think this method using electric bike alternator output dc to dc 12v convert to 72v bro work or not
Yes
@@MrElectron Sir.
3.7v cell se dc ko ac me boost krke computer chala skte hai with monitor..agar possible hai to bana oe dikhaao aur kitni der tak chal jaayega..
Great video
Many thanks for this practical experiment, however, can this apply to a 10kva alternator?
Dear Mr.Electron, please suggest me one device which converts 12v/14v DC generated by alternator to 220VAC with constant AC voltage irrespective of alternator rpm
Good qwn..
@@pinjalgajjar718 Brother I am not questioning him, asking him to help in finding such device in market
@@nomulakarunakar5510 ya i know,
i also want to find that device that's why i said good qwn..
if i left a comment here & if mr. electron reply to your qwn then i can read his answer in your comment section that will be answer for me too..
@@nomulakarunakar5510 - You are looking for an *inverter* -- a device that takes the 12-14 DC volts of an alternator and changes it to the regulated 220 volts AC that you want. Note that if you are going to do this with an alternator, you should also have a 12 volt battery connected to the alternator to stabilize its output voltage as it does when used in a vehicle.
How about a twelve volt battery and a dc motor to get this thing going. The diode will turn dc off leaving the alt running
Can that alternator run a piston broken 3000watts generator through magnetic and fuel less electricity for an output of 220 volts.
We can connect a 12V /rechargeable battery for feeding self excitation . Circuit can be simpler, Only re- chagrining of the battery can be designed.
very nice job
Thanks you for sharing my friend...
Hi,
I have a query.
Do you purchase the alternator freshly or do you salvage it from a scrap shop?
Is it possible to reuse an alternator for generating electricity?
Please do tell me
When he used the toe nail clippers I subscribed.... lol!
All this intelligent talking & u don't have a pair of wire snips!?
Ikr who cares if u can get some free energy 👍👌🏼🙌🏾✌️
I'd say wire up an inverter & get A.C from D.C.
Figure how to power up the alternator without the grid or minimal grid usage!?
Kinda like the newer diesel trains!?
Diesel fuel/motor Powers up electrical in those trains now!!
If we could use minimal electricity to power up inverter power!! We could be on to something!👌🏼🙌🏾
We have step down transformers & step up transformers!
There's gotta be away to achieve better results!?
We have solar power....wind & water to power generators/alternators!?
Jus need enough to power larger AC equipment too!
The mini ductless hvacs need to research more! Suspect some have a low locked rotor amperage & full load running capacity!
We can "I believe!" do this!👍🤜🏼🤛🏽👌🏼🙌🏾✌️
I got a new 3000 watts generator 7 hp but with a busted piston maybe due to overheating. Can an alternator run it instead of an engine?
We can run a DC dynamo by using 12 v adpter
