In our wind farm, which runs our home and farm, we use 20 - 24V/200A alternators with 24 12V 8D Truck batteries run in 24V cells through a 10,000A Inverter to 120V. On most days it supplies our full electrical load (except when welding...we use a diesel generator for that.). Great video!
The caveat is that we live in a valley where 12-105mph winds are constant. Wind generation using inefficient alternator is a no-brained and dirt cheap. Wind power is inherently unreliable in 99.9% of all applications and would be a gigantic waste of time and money for most people. We are adding solar grid for the underground retreat complex we are building. We anticipate the need to move our sheep underground during one of our routine 90+mph wind storms. During these winds all turbines are locked down with centrifugal braking systems and solar must take over to avoid frying the system with massive overload charges and cf-related mechanical disintegration. Our solar panels are locked down into 1/4”x2” angle iron frames mounted to 3”x6” steel girders using underground 2/0 cable leading to an underground battery bunker. When life gives you lemons...you still need power to run the juicer!
I figured out that same kind of setup thinking no one else had. I was looking for a vid like this but could not find one till now. So what I thought too will work. Cool.
Thank you so much. Been off the tools for so long and I became so rusty with my electronics skills and knowledge. Thanks to your genius, it's coming back to me and I've had success with this exercise as a result. Regards, Darryl.
Back in days I had a 120 amp GM alternator on a 8hp Briggs and Stratton that fed 2 big diesel batteries that ran a 1,000watt 120v vanner inverter out of a ambulance that I would back feed from garage to house. That 120 amp alternator would work the 8hp pretty good!
hey your really close to doing what i got set up but i dont use a gas engine i use a 12 dc motor so no fuel cost it pretty much free electric .....but if you think about it you can figure it out ,,,,oh im running 2-5000 watt inverters on 6 golf cart batteries..... 1-1 wire gm alternator 1- 12 volt electric motor and 1- ? .....im not going to tell you figure it out on your own and 6- 6 volt golf cart batteries .....and the reason for them batteries is they have more amp hours than big diesel batteries
It's great to be scientific for fun, but in practicality you may want to use a battery as a storage tank from the output of the alternator using an alternator with internally regulated output. This way the inverter can take startup surges better. Also running the alternator at slow speeds to reach your desired voltage while cranking up the amperage will overheat the alternator and melt the windings. FYI.
A brilliant idea to replace the resistive wire, measure the resistance of the rotor, calculate at 12v how many amps it will pull (example: for 2 ohms it will require 6 amps) and after calculating the current use LM7812 voltage regulators in parallel as many as needed , if you need 3 amps use 3 or 4 in parallel and voilà. The electronic voltage controllers of the car alternator make the control by the voltage of the rotor, keeping at 12v the output may be more stable or the subtle increase in speed does not raise the output voltage much.
I am not sure but I believe that the alternator generates about 50v three phase and it is converted to dc12 by the diode pack. Would it be better to remove the diodes and use a star or delta transformer to achieve the mains voltage? Definitely better with a battery in circuit to buffer the alternator load if sticking with the inverter.
110 to power the dc motor. Then converts it to dc output to the converter to 220v Yea. Kinda a round n about way to achieve 220. Some countries that’s the only way to do it. Fun to watching though! Larry
Yes but once he starts it up he could actually plug the motor into the alternator and it will be self sufficient u can get even more out put by adding magnets to the alternator
Hi Mr Electron could i first just say thankyoufor a very interesting and informative video . However could you please answer the question that I and it seems quite a few others would like to know, I presume you are using the mains current to the motor purely for demonstration purposes? as Obviously generating a power supply by using another power supply would totaly defeat the object, so our question is, what would be replaced by the mains supply? for example would you be able to run it from a windmill power system? or some sort of water wheel set up running the motor? what would be the minimum RPM the motor would need to turn in order for the alternator to produce a steady 220v ? Thank you once again
You can build an AVR (automatic voltage regulator) which is a feedback control system that automatically adjusts the rotor DC excitation current so the rectified output voltage of the stator windings is regulated at the desired voltage (for example 11V-15V). The AVR is a current regulator, which can be a DC/DC converter or a linear regulator, equipped with a feedback controller, and takes power from the rectified output voltage of the stator windings and output the current to the rotor DC excitation winding.
Good job Mr electron, is it possible to make a motor by combination of permanent magnets in stator coil and also in rotor both to be permanent magnet an stoppable motor
Hello , I have a question for you . I have put together a setup using a 12 volt thread mill D/C motor and connected the positive from the motor to the positive of alternator and ground cable of motor to alternato
I just posted a comment about yiur idea. I also thought of it. You can use 2 alternators 1 to run 1 inverter to run the electric motor. The other one to run the other inverter. To run your appliance

There is no mechanical load on the drill. With no load, the power demand from the drill is just a few watts, nowhere close to the 350w maximum rating of the drill.
Buy and add the in-situ voltage controller assembly, this is a part that attaches behind the alternator along with the rectifier assembly beside it. This will keep the voltage between 14V to 15V at any rpm or current draw.
Excellent video that was great! I have a question, is the exciter cable cable what provides the initial electromagnetic force to the rotary winding? If so how does it continue to have magnetic charge after initial excitation
Helo Mr Electron, I love this video so much, especially as it makes your viewers part of the investigation process. Thank you. But there are a few questions I will like to ask. 1. Don't you think making out just 350 watts from a 3000 watts inverter is not ideal? 2. What is the possible way to solve the issue of the resistance wire getting burnt?
culd it by posibel to make a brush type rectifier for dc generators and useing 2 diferent wire size coils in stator winding on a crystal baterry set up ?
Is the motor a high voltage brushed dc motor which uses in treadmill? And what will happen if you replace the electromagnetic rotor and use a permanent magnet rotor? will the current and voltage increase in a lower rpm ?
Did you remove the voltage regulator from the Alternator and simply replace it with the "freehand wire you were using to increase and decrease resistance by lengthening and shortening the connection, and if so; why is the original voltage regulator not used?
@J-Seven Wow! Thanks man, your my "Hero" now I got to go back and watch the video again because I wrote my comment over 7 month's ago, and you answered it 7 hours age. But, better lat then never. "Thanks brother"
