I got absolutely destroyed for being the first person to report the glitches, nobody believed me. That all changed when the game launched though, and everybody dissing me went quiet. Genuinely shocked that none of the reviewers reported the glitches either, made me feel crazy for a second.
@@GameApologist Appreciate it, man. Wasn't trying to be a villain or anything, I was just genuinely baffled and disappointed that it ended up exceeding my expectations on how broken it was. I like Sonic Colors!!
@WiiManElite As long as this series sells, that's not happening; its gone the ways of Star Wars. A Mediocre product run by out of touch execs, entirely surviving by a fanbase desperate for any content no matter what it is. eh *shrug* I'd say just play other video games at that point. Sonic doesn't need to die, just.....keep it moving.
@@sonic5993 Nah Sonic needs to die. He has suffered enough. But I agree with you saying that's not happening anytime soon. However, I don't believe it's forever if anything it kinda feels it's prolonging the inevitable.
And just like that the words “All stars”, “definition”, “ultimate” and “trilogy” will send shivers down people’s spines, all thanks to this great year of 2021.
I love the new wisp. (no, not just because of my name lol) They look so friendly and adorable.😍 Little ghosts just floating around happily wanting to help Sonic ahh! Meh heart! Best wisp ever!
Man this guy's jokes, topics, criticisms, general flow is so good. An underrated member of the sonic community, the way is videos are executed are beyond enjoyable. Keep doin' you man!
I live in a very rural area of the U.S. A lot of people here can't patch games because they can't get internet service where they live. So they're stuck to whatever is on the disc/cart on launch day. But even if that was not an issue. The fact games can be patched is not an excuse for releasing a broken mess. Just delay the product.
Not to mention this is a remastered version, you know what that means right. It means any glitches from the previous games would be fixed and it would run smoothly since day one.
As I said on Twitter back in April, I hoped Sonic learned from Forces, Boom, and 06 for the 30th Anniversary. I didn’t think Sonic could yet again survive what happened 15 years ago. But what I’ve seen and what I’ve played is something I’ve been feeling since 2014. Why is Sonic in this state? Why is Monkey Ball, Yakuza, Sakura Chronicles, and even freaking Alex Kidd and House of the Dead being treated with the upmost care and AAA quality, and SEGA’s icon, their mascot, what gave them their edge and briefly overthrew Nintendo in the 90’s Console Wars treated like it’s just… …nothing? And why hasn’t SEGA learned anything from a game that was made to attract Mario fans, now made to attract fans of the Movie? SEGA, if you wanted this to be your movie tie-in game, you should have had this as THAT. Not the big 30th anniversary game. Sonic Mania was a beautiful, wonderful, high quality celebration that was the classic style perfected. Heck, Generations is still considered the best 3D Sonic game because it took what Colors and Unleashed did right and LEARNED FROM IT. This is a below average remaster of a game from a decade ago! And now, 2 months after launch it’s getting to JUST PASSIBLE?! I expect more. I expect Sonic to be far removed from these mistakes in an era of gaming that couldn’t care less about releasing games that are on the quality, if not lower, than Sonic 06. Yep. 2021. Even if Sonic Frontiers (as it’s now called) is derivative of Breath of the Wild, or even the Adventure games, how can we expect Sonic Team to actually compete? They haven’t even come close to AAA since 2008. Say what you will about Unleashed; heck I think it blows, but it had time, resources, ambition, and most importantly, QUALITY. I want to be excited about Sonic ‘22. I want to be able to go online and be over the moon about how good it looks. I want to make posts defending the game saying, “Hey, this is what you all wanted back in 2015 after Sonic Boom almost killed the series again. Just give it a chance.” But… I don’t think I can. I’ve seen this franchise stumble so many times for 15 years now. Half of its life hasn’t been the consistent quality of when Sonic was on SEGA hardware. I still had my fun with SCU, I even enjoyed (some of) my time with Forces. But not because I felt obligated to. I still see Sonic’s old self in those games. One of blazing down skyscrapers, blowing up Death Eggs twice in a row, having stories, and lore, and being constantly quality and fun. Sonic, you have a passionate community backing you. Mania proved that sometimes the fans know best. Learn from that. And when you show us quality, if you show us promise and an actual drive to get your act together, I guarantee we will back you up every inch of the way.
@@nd_4726 Sega rushed BigRedButton and forced them to make the game exclusive to the Wii U while using an engine that the Wii U didn't support, so the game was a horrible buggy mess. It's unfortunate because of how much ambition was behind the project and it all went to waste.
That "spoilers for how babies are made" at the end was so unexpected, that it made me actually laugh out loud. Which is something that almost never happens if I'm watching something by myself
26:00 Twitter has 2 modes when it comes to game release discussion: lambasting an entire dev studio over the decisions of their manager, or kneeling to suckle the teat of their favorite publisher, sometimes alternating between the 2 within days of each other without a hint of self-awareness. Get off Twitter, you deserve better.
34:29 - "...the entire AAA gaming industry [is] following suit of Sonic '06." Well, when you put it like that, I guess Sonic's still a trailblazer in the industry.
I can't say I'm hopeful that Sonic will ever return to the status he once was. However, your coverage of these games, has made me remember why I fell in love in with the little blue bastard. Thank you for that.
Hey Nick. if you want my guess for what happened. Here's what I've pieced together may have happened: Sega gave Blind Squirrel all the files for Sonic Colors and a very specific deadline for the game's release so that it wouldn't interfere with other plans. Sonic Colors was difficult to bring to modern consoles, especially Switch, due to the Wii being so different. Much of it went fine regardless until some of the Wii data corrupted, forcing Blind Squirrel to rebuild parts of it from scratch. Blind Squirrel was unable to change the release date and just told Sega the game was complete, and it got released in it's glitched condition.
@@charliekahn4205 Digital Foundry actually did a pretty good breakdown on how SC Ultimate was constructed; very weird approach to bringing this game to current platforms.
35:40 ¨when someone you love fucks up, you dont ignore ´em, you grab them by the collar, you look ´im in the eye and say ´hey! stop fucking up!´¨ Great video mate!
This has been a great series, Nick. I feel you on the desire to correct Sonic's missteps, wanting them to improve and become the greatest version of themselves that you know they could be. Thank you for these, and looking forward to more here and on Sunset City.
@@TsubasaOfTheSword In my honest opinion, the DS version felt more fun and challenging than the Wii version. Getting through some the extra missions involving other characters from the franchise, getting the Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages, dealing with the tougher bosses that you can annihilate if you're clever about fighting them, fighting the Mother Wisp, etc. Despite being the handheld port, Colors DS felt like it had more to it.
SEGA actually gave blind squirrel all the resources they would need to make this project great but it was blind squirrel that rushed it out to make a quick buck. For example. Ff you dig in the files of the game you will see assets and animations that were meant to be used for recreating the cutscenes but they never get used instead going for an upscale.
I feel like not just Sonic, but a lot of fandoms are victims of a subculture of people who spread Toxic Positivity. Those people who act like you aren't allowed to criticize anything they like, and any post-game patches invalidate your criticism anyway. The Nintendo fanbase in particular has had a rather nasty infestation of them to deal with lately, but they are almost everywhere you look. The game is a month from release and something about the trailer that just came out makes you feel like maybe the game might be a tad unfinished? Nah, it's just old footage or an old build, they're definitely just waiting for release to show off how good the game really is instead of taking advantage of it in their marketing for some reason. The game came out and is riddled with severe issues? Nah, it'll get patched soon, you shouldn't worry about the product you paid money for being broken on release. Criticism serves a very important role in the betterment of all art and media so long as it is constructive, and being able to tell the difference between when someone is being constructive and hateful shouldn't be as hard as these types of people make it seem. Most people in video game fanbases give criticism because of their love for a game/series, not just for the sake of complaining. They want these games to be as great as they can possibly be, not make excuses for them to be as lazy and unfinished as possible. That said though, there is an opposite end of the spectrum that's just as extreme, where their expectations are always way too high and anything that doesn't meet those expectations for even the tiniest reason must be regarded as the worst kind of trash. Sometimes I feel like I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
Pokemon is probably a poster child for that phenomenon. The franchise's mainline entries have been stale for several generations, but because any who gave serious criticisms were shunned or pushed out, the franchise is continuing to sell well while less effort is put in. Only now is it beginning to show signs of the negativity being unquellable.
I typically try not to be one to shut down criticism. That's a good way for things to die. But I think there are some things that can come down to a difference in perspective between the crowds (discounting the truly toxic groups of "you're just haters/shills"). Patches can help bugs, but as many as possible should be buffed out before release, and to those that called those out, you deserve recognition, because many of those probably should've been caught or given more time to be caught and should not be met with toxicity or resistance. when you love a franchise and want it to do better, you call out things. But again, outside of bugs, some criticisms can come from subjectivity, which can meet more reasonable resistance. Like, pokemon was mentioned above, and I know a lot of players point to the sinnoh games and johto remakes as the peak, but when I go back to them, I can't stand them, and while I recognized that Sword and Shield have areas they can do better the things that I enjoy about the games are more prevalent there. Having a balanced team, feeling my time is respected vs tedious grinding used to emulate "difficulty", availability of mons to replay for my monotype runs, and the competitive helps.
@@davidbeer5015 While it's true that many criticisms can be more subjective, I feel as though even that criticism isn't invalid. The way I see it, criticism is effectively just advice. As with any advice, it doesn't have to be followed exactly or even at all, but there should be reasons for why this is the case. For example, criticism could fail to get to the root of an issue, and so the implemented remedy to the issue could be something different from what the critic suggested in an attempt to solve the problem better or in a way that is more fun. The only times I think criticism should ever be regarded as invalid are when they are toxic such as worded as demands rather than advice/suggestions, or when the critic in question just clearly doesn't know what they are talking about such as criticizing game features that don't actually exist. If I were to complain about how Shadow plays in Sonic Advance 3, that's invalid criticism because Shadow isn't even in Sonic Advance 3.
That’s fair, and I’d ultimately agree. A lot of it comes from passion, and the differences due to priorities or preferences, and that’s something fans should respect on all sides, and hear the reasons why.
22:16 I would have liked them to revamp the final boss. Like what if After the original fight then you would go to 2d fight like colours ds. Then do a third phase that’s pretty much a harder Version of phase one. Maybe have some moves based off lost world wisps and end it with it using the bomb to add some tension
I'm surprised you never mentioned how Blind Squirrel is apparently horrifying in-house for game development and how an employee review dropped explaining all the crazy shit BSG puts their employees through despite their site mentioning a "anti-crunch environment". That being said however, I do agree with your points and as someone who ADORES Lost World, 06, and admittedly I even had fun with Forces, I can't deny SEGA has seriously been falling behind lately. I don't hate Sonic, but I KNOW he can do better because I've played almost if not every game from his decades long catalogue and he's put out some banger games. Gens, Unleashed, SA1/2, Heroes, hell even Lost World was enjoyable to me. I want him to do better. Sonic was the gaming franchise that brought me to game as much as I do today. I still play SA2, I still play Gens, and Heroes and so on. When I got that GameCube as a kid, and popped up in SA2 Battle, that essentially told me "oh fuck yeah, this game is incredible". With the next big mainline game coming up, I hope it's polished, and full of content and such that will make any fan squee with glee. Yes, they can ride the coattails of BOTW or any open world game, but that doesn't matter as long as the game holds itself up. Sonic can copy the idea of any genre it wants, but what matters is that he does it with his own style, his own flair, and is full of life. Admittedly, I want Sonic Colors Ultimate, and as a wanter of that game, watching these retrospective videos makes me feel a little dumb for wanting a shoddy remaster, and believe me I agree with it's flaws, but at the end of the day, it's a game I grew up with on the Wii, it's a game that excites me with potential replay value and the core game is still there, regardless of the changes. However I'm not getting it until I save up the case for a PS4/5, so that way when I get it, it's actually patched up. (Plus Switch ports are pretty bad imo so I tend to avoid this). But yeah, pray for the little fast blue boy that SEGA will learn from their mistakes and make Frontiers the best game it can be, and even if it ends up mediocre or something...idk at least we have Prime, Movie 2 and so on LOL Sorry if this was long I just got inspired by your video to gush about Sonic and stuff haha, I'm a very passionate fan. Anyway, really great video and great points as well!
Doesn't mean you should feel _obligated_ to stick around through this abusive, unending cycle of disrespect (constantly settling for "good enough", instead of demanding an exceptional experience), but I feel you. I used to be a hard-core Sonic fan not too long ago, but the late 2010's brutally choked out my faith for this franchise's future, until I just couldn’t find anything to cling to anymore. Even if it does eventually regain its popularity, it won't be because of why I fell in love with the series, so there's no need to torture myself.
Sonic Colours deserved better from Sega. That image of Sonic Colours smashing the Sonic Cycle? Yeah, at th time, I knew people who bought a Wii just to play Sonic Colours. That's how impressive and important it was. I can't see anyone buying a console for Sonic Colours Ultimate.
I don't see why Sonic games have this shaky, shoddy quality to them. You get one great game then the next is an absolute dumpster fire. Meanwhile, SEGA's other franchises are of higher quality and seem to have more time and care put into them. Makes me feel like SEGA doesn't really think Sonic is worth putting the money into even though Mania and the movie beg to differ. What do we gotta do to get consistent quality in this franchise? Because from what I'm seeing people would rather purchase a $500 console to play an FPS boosted Sonic Unleashed than this mess.
i feel like SEGA (or at least sega of japan) sabotages sonic as a side effect of the seemingly present grudge they hold against their other branches (particularly with sega of america) due to sonic being much more relevant overseas compared to his domestic fame they likely view him and the series as a whole as an extension of their other units- and judging from how they treated the xtreme team when they needed more time/resources or how they specifically asked for the 32x when sega of america knew better than to release it, i feel like that certain level of corporate pettiness is what drives SEGA to crack down on their main mascot and when you look at yakuza (a series that's very popular in japan) or even super monkey ball mania (which i think they see as an opportunity to finally gauge a domestic audience for the then-dormant franchise) being given the golden treatment for quality while sonic was left eating dirt this year, that seems pretty suspicious to me
In short, Sonic Team views any failure as something they must never do again. Instead of working to refine and fix what worked and what didn't, they throw the baby out with the bathwater every time. Because of this, they also can't decide on what their audience is, and can't commit to any specific feel for the game.
You know I'm curious if you'd be willing to do a deep dive on the franchise as it stands now, and where it can go from here, because I'm genuinely interested in what you take is. To me it's intreating situation, on one hand the games are floundering with the last parsed game on release being a retro throwback project that was helmed by a team famous for mobile ports. The last two major releases have been met considered average at best in the case of forces and outright virtual in the case of colors. So you'd think most people would say its in a bad place. BUT almost all the recent multi media projects have been outstanding successes. The IDW books are beloved by fans, the movie was surprise hit and the sequel is hotly anticipated, and the new Netflix series looks promising. Sonic as a gaming series is having serious issues, but sonic as a multimedia franchise is doing surprisingly well for the first time in a long while, and I think theirs an interesting discussion within that dichotomy. To me the success of the outside media, which seems more grounded in the tone of the 90s-00's games but carrying the modern sense of humor, makes me hopeful that Sega may try and match their tone instead of having it the other way around. IDK, whatever it is I think where the franchise goes depends a LOT on how good this new game is. If it's genuinely good and critically well received but manages to innovate we may finally break away form the cycle we seen of Sega attempting to innovate, receiving lukewarm to negative reception, then reverting to what worked before. If it fails I think we might break away for the cycle again but in a different way, Three vary poorly received games in a row one after the would official bring us into an 06 era style slump, especially since give how eyxperminte this new game seems be it bescally has to be either pretty damn good or fall flat on it's face. Give that scenario I could very well see some heads rolling at sone team, I don't know much about Japanese business but I think three consecutive big failures with one of your most international well known franchises will get someone the ax anywhere in the world. I think it's highly likely if the next game fails we'll see a LONG hiatus on the mainline series. At least as big as the current one, if not longer. I could even seem the next mainline being handed off to the Taxman team, since they were the last big success. However I do think Sega will allow the Muti media to continue unabated, and might even add more to it. (A never TV series, or more generalized Streaming show would be great.) IDK but as someone who gets faceted by franchises and how they evolve, thrive and die, this situation makes me curious. It sort of like pokemon in a way, but in Pokemon's case the multi media almost dwarfs the games, where in this case sonic's games are still front and center.
You know it's a good video when it makes you wanna rant about this stuff in your own time lmao But seriously, good job man. I know this must've taken a long time to make even before you had to split the video up into three parts, but it was well worth it.
It was a challenge because the chase enemy is a fucking cheater in the Ultimate version. Went back to the Wii version to check, and it was easier there too. Either I'm snorting some high-concentration copium or he attacks and moves faster, for some inexplicable reason.
@@jackskirata4819 Yep, that's definitely it, now that you mention it. The lane-specific attacks gave me the most trouble, and it was likely because of the lack of proper visible telegraphing.
They should've done what they did with Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition. Take content from both the console version and the handheld version. They could've added the Mother Wisp battle from the DS version and the Special Stages.
I feel like after the original Planet Wisp in 2010, every official remix of it forgets the reason why it was composed the way it was as even in 2011's Sonic Generations, the gentle calming side of it was removed with a really techno style or something.
"When someone you love f' up you grab'em from the hand and say to stop f'ing up"... that's the most wholesone thing i have ever heard. But... when the person does not want to be helped and keep doing the same errors in the same way for most of its life, it makes you want to give up of the person and move on so you can end your suffering. But it's worth when you realize it's person who changed your life and has the potential to inspire another people and just needs to go slow and take one step at a time fixing it's problems so he can make our hearts race again(in a good way).
Nope, get that shit out of here. Personally speaking, shoving the failures I'm _very aware of and am already beating myself up for_ in my face is a surefire way to get me out of someone's life.
I streamed this game and it crashed. At the most random time as well. Yesterday. After the patches. It's still broken as hell. I play on PS5. It's bad as hell. They need to fix it. I'm fine with the game, but if they don't fix it, I might not sell my Wii copy. I don't want to play a bad version of a game. I can't sell the new one because I got the digital deluxe version. That means I got it digitally. This sucks. I'm glad that it's not the only Sonic game I have to play because it's bad.
Man, when I first heard they were remaking Colors I was really hoping they'd take the DS and Wii games and mash them together, even if it meant losing a couple redundant feeling stages in the process. It seemed like such a no brainer. So of course Sega didn't do that. I'm STILL hoping they do that with the inevitable Unleashed remake but since Super Monkey Paw (read: Sega) always goes against what would be smart maybe I should hope against it.
32:00 "Colors first led us to Generations." I don't think so tbh. Generations development started pre-Colors and Colors original began as an effort to port Gens to Wii. I wouldn't credit Colors for anything in Gens besides the story pickip.
Nick again helping this poor Sonic fan express his thoughts on the franchise. I want this franchise to be as amazing as it was when I was a kid--for myself, and for my own children. While those guys liked Sonic Colors Ultimate, my kids don't think about that game anymore. I want them to have a game that they will want to play over and over again, just like I had with Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Come on, Sega! Make another God-tier Sonic game. For the kids. Please?
When I play some sonic levels, I like to to sync my play with the level music. I love doing it because it gives me a flow while playing and when I speedrun, the music gives me cues for where I am and where I should be. So when I started TR Act 1 and I was still on the loading screen, it hurt me a little. Even with remixes, I can hear when i should start running, but im still on a loading screen. Unleashed, Generations, and even Forces had the music start after the loading screen and it feels soooo good. If the loading was the same as the original, this wouldn’t be a problem.
I always felt this rhythmic connection with Sonic stages and the music as far back as Unleashed. I would try to perfect Dragon Road day in tune to the great musical score, and just feel the game pulling me along with the spectacle on display. Seeing Colors Ultimate muddle that up compared to the Wii original is pretty disappointing.
I think my first big warning sign was when they played the Speak with Your Heart remix during the symphony, and my ears were still ringing half-way through the next song. Just a shame I'm gonna miss most of the shitshow, since I'm waiting for Steam.
When I played this remake on the Switch, I surprisingly encountered minimal game-breaking glitches. The glitches I came across ranged from mild or major annoyances to sometimes hilarious incidents. Still, I regret to say I had some fun, and I just wanted to play Colors again; to feel that rush of nostalgia I had back in my elementary days. It’s nice to see a game in a new light (the colors are so bright XD), and this video really made me reflect on my journey with this game.
Ah yes the classic Ben 10 Obama Harry potter sonic 10 edition of sonic colours. Congrats on finally completing this behemoth of a video/videos. They were really well put together! 25:13 I’ve always wanted to get those wisps figures they look sick.
I’m getting pretty sick of new games needing patches to fix issues that just shouldn’t be allowed past quality control. Paying customers shouldn’t be your beta testers.
10,000% Agree about lives systems. They have their place in games, particularly ones about completing obstacle courses. The change to Tails Saves was largely a detriment.
This is an amazing series of essays on this game. I’m not the biggest Sonic fan but you’re probably the only person who’s gotten me rooting for Sonic and being sad even if I’m not an actual fan of these games. Keep making amazing content man!
I understand the opinion, but it was already built upon by a solid game, so really imo that statement is very vague and doesn't add anything. Expand on why "Ultimate" is an awesome game. Such as idk the music, anything that "Ultimate" brang to the table then just a blanket statement, no offense.
@@bobbovine but what about the game? I'm not saying he's wrong, I'm just asking what. I'm not saying he can't like the game but I just don't get it when people just say something like that with no explanation. Because especially in this case he likes a game that was already good from the original edition. I'm not asking for a professional review.
Mario 3d Allstars might be a cash grab but Skyward Sword HD actually fixed problems and added onto a package. Yeah they were miniscule but a bunch of miniscule updates can make a big difference in the long run. Same go for Famicom Detective Club Remakes and the Advanced Wars games. Though you can say both SS and Mario Allstars are overpriced.

The Master Emerald (マスターエメラルド Masutā Emerarudo?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a massive green emerald and a mystical relic of immeasurable power from the forgotten past. Created by the gods, the Master Emerald acts as a counter to the Chaos Emeralds. The one who controls the Master Emerald can nullify and control the Chaos Emeralds, making the Master Emerald a very valuable gem. THIS ANSWERS TO WHY KNUCKLES CAN KNOCK SONIC OUT OF SUPER FORM (i think) heres more info: The Master Emerald rests on Angel Island where its power keeps the island afloat in the sky; without it, the island will fall down. Over the last four millennia, the Master Emerald has been guarded by the surviving echidnas of the Knuckles Clan who has kept the gem safe from those seeking it for their own gain. In the present day, its current guardian is Knuckles the Echidna.
I'm a hardcore adventure fan, but even I pray now not for Adventure 3, not for something specific that I like in Sonic games - but at the very least for Sega to make things 100% functionally. Basically each game from 2000 onward had something wrong with it: Adventure titles had some bits that are not very fun to play (Big, mecha-levels in SA2 - also Gamma levels were fun in SA so it went downhill), 2006 and Boom had horrifying glitches and bugs, some of the boost games straight lacked the plot and the characters, etc. IF ONLY that freaking company made at least 1 fully functional game in ANY genre and style, just working decent in all the directions (gameplay, plot, characters, styles and other) - it would be a miracle. The only game like this in recent years was Mania AND IT WAS MADE BASICALLY BY THE FANS. Goddamit, Sega, at least hire more fans then.
Releasing single player games with bugs/glitches should be criminal.. multi-player I understand .. because you usually keep going back to it… but most people stop playing a single player game once they beat it… and if you beat it despite game breaking glitches, most people won’t come back to play them fixed
The big stinger is, with all the SC Ultimate buzz happening, Unleashed got a FPS Boost on Xbox Series X/S. No resolution boost, yeah, but that game got the bare minimum it needed to be new again in the modern gaming era. And I'm pretty sure all the big Unleashed fans(myself Included, admittedly) will just gravitate to that, rather than this seemingly half-hearted "remaster." Congrats, SEGA!
Also people seem to forget that console manufacturers or companies shut down their servers eventually (like Wii already has and Sony wanted to pull the plug on PS3), when they are gone you never have the chance to play a game in a patched form anymore. It's really short sighted to say "they patched the game", because 10-20 years down the road you won't be able to complete some of those games because of game breaking bugs and glitches! Most games of today aren't even playable without a Day One Patch! But shortsightedness is pretty common these days I guess....
1. This is why I'm sticking with the original releases. 2. I wouldn't put much faith in mind Squirrel, they were responsible for the Switch port of WWE 2K18 and not only was that botched at launch but they couldn't even fix it, eventually they just gave up and left it a broken mess. 3. What's wrong with Sonic Adventure DX? I didn't have a Dreamcast growing up, I only had a Gamecube until I was 13, that was the version that allowed me to experience that game, and playing it today I just don't see any problems with it.
If anything sonic colors ultimate has taught me that we should cherish what we have, as you never know one day that friend will have a rough transition into 3D but jokes aside Like I keep saying in sunset heights, "I just want a good sonic game". I'd take brilliant diamond and sparking pearl because as lame as they are compared to the prior next gen of a old generation at least I can smile and openly say "So this is what it feels like to enjoy the series" I have no fun in critiquing ultimate because I want at least *most* of us to be happy customers not boring another hole (which is warranted ) Shame me and Nick just have to shrug and stay with the blue menace despite how easy it is to let go.
I would have preferred more characters to play over customizing Sonic. If it was more of skins akin to the Spiderman game, like being able to play as classic Sonic in appearance, or have alternative outfits from other Sonic games, like the Soap shoes from Adventure 2, then I would have felt more interested in it. This is my first time playing Colors, and I wish I had played it when it first came out.
19:31 Played the original on Dolphin, adn I have to say that it's the same problem, if you restart a level from the finish screen and quit the level afterward, none of the collected or acquierd ranks or collectibles are saved. So it's not only a problem for the remake, but it's still annoying nonetheless.
Nick, I really don’t know what to say, I’ve been watching you since you had like 3-4k subs, and dude I can’t even imagine the amount of time you put into the production of these insanely entertaining videos, as an extremely enthusiastic fan of the series, I can’t thank you enough for these great videos, keep it up man!!
Wow, I really digged some of your witty lines in this one, thank you :) You've also done a really good job at demonstrating how this is the worst version of Colours. Very good stuff And man, I dunno if I read too much into what you say, but I feel a deep and layered skill with poetry in some of your more relevant points. I don't say this much, but you're a genius
The moment this game was titled Sonic Colors 'Ultimate' I knew something was off. You'd think a Sonic Colors remaster would have a more imaginative name, but a generic term like 'ultimate' for a game intended to have so much life and fresh energy speaks volumes about the product, and I hate that my suspicions were right.
I really hope they play these videos at a board meeting someday. Sonic was my first childhood hero, and I want the legacy to live on in a good light. When I first saw the horror story of the movies first previews I was sure that was the end of Sonic. I was sure that no one would remember the great times in front of TV that I had playing the games when I was small. I really hope they change the direction they've been plunging lately.
Windows 11 came out with some issues as well. Only Windows updates (patches) fixed up Ryzen's scheduler. Microsoft clearly put no thought into AMD when designing the scheduler for Intel's 12th gen E-CORES. 25:55 I barely believe in patches.
Man, when is Sega actually going to learn to Try. I have taken a Hiatus from everything Sonic since Forces and it's making me miss the days when I had fun with his games. I have replayed Sonic Heroes, Unleashed, 06, and even The Riders games a lot since Forces and they all felt right. They had the right feel for the levels. Even the Storys, yes, including 06, felt like something up Sonic's alley. And after 10 years since Generations, it just feels like Sega just stopped. Not just stopped trying but stopped putting the love in there games
Yeah, I have to agree. Sonic 2006 is an absolute buggy mess and eggman and the robots' designs were awful, but it still at least TRIED to be a sonic adventure-ish game. It was trying to do what worked. You have to respect it for that. For me, I haven't really trusted a mainline sonic game since Generations. I found that one far too bland and I already disliked colours. Mania is a nice exception but even then it's not a mainline title.
well shoot you just took the cake for my favorite youtuber, like, the points you bring up are right, your jokes and such are funny, and like overall, i find myself having a happy time listening to you talk about the beautiful mess that is sonic the hedgehog, keep doing you man
It would seem that a lot of people take constructive criticism of Sonic games as hate, then either get mad at it or decide to join in, which eventually snowballs into a huge storm where you can't tell the difference between people who actually hate the games or people who want them to improve. The entire internet is just a huge misunderstanding...
I just realized... are there still no lives in the Challenge Shuttle? If not, what's supposed to be the challenge to it since the difficulty was supposed to come from finishing the game in one sitting?
I feel like I'm weird with Sonic Colors. On the Wii, I enjoyed it alright, but as time went on, the idiosyncrasies of the game got to me and it fell further down on my list of Sonic games. Now, maybe it's because the newest 3D game we had was Forces, but I wound up really liking Ultimate--much more than I expected to. The downsides you mentioned in your video all hold true, but without the unlockables, listening to remixed music, rival rush, and timed homing attack, I don't think I would have played the game past initial completion. I think it helped--and I mean no disrespect to you upon saying this--not listening to reviews and hearing about glitches before I purchased it. I took the Deluxe Digital preorder plunge for the first time (Colors is a good game, after all) so I was going to get it early no matter what. Although I don't really like Forces, I knew I hated the game before I even played it, listening to a lot of heavy negativity before the game even came out. I can't help but wonder if that negativity impacted my enjoyment of Forces a little when I finally did get it. However...I see now Colors Ultimate is steeply discounted just a few months after launch, which I admit I am pretty ticked about paying full price and then some when I should have just held off.
its almost sad how the one time sega decides to not rush a game out, they chose the worst possible developer to outsource to by complete fucking accident
I bought this game at launch and haven't played it since. Not because of the gameplay either, the cutscenes looked AWFUL. I don't know if it's the AI upscaling, or if I just have a rose tented lens over my experience with the original colors, but I felt like I was genuinely looking at a worse version of one of my favorite Sonic game and I didn't want to tarnish that. So glad I didn't play it at the time either cause the bugs and glitches would have absolutely ruined any chance of me playing it again. However, now that it's been... almost 3 years?!?!? Shit... It's more than enough time for me to give it another shot. Though, maybe I'll wait a little bit longer for modders to replace the cutscenes, it's legitimately hard to look at lol
I got absolutely destroyed for being the first person to report the glitches, nobody believed me. That all changed when the game launched though, and everybody dissing me went quiet. Genuinely shocked that none of the reviewers reported the glitches either, made me feel crazy for a second.
I remember that, and good on you for sticking to your guns on that situation.
@@GameApologist Appreciate it, man. Wasn't trying to be a villain or anything, I was just genuinely baffled and disappointed that it ended up exceeding my expectations on how broken it was. I like Sonic Colors!!
the critics probably didn't even play the game and just reused old reviews of the original wii game.
@WiiManElite As long as this series sells, that's not happening; its gone the ways of Star Wars. A Mediocre product run by out of touch execs, entirely surviving by a fanbase desperate for any content no matter what it is.

I mean, Boom wasn't that bad; atleast the show wasn't. Haven't played the game.
Their games suck
Also nice speech dude
when they said learn from 06 i really hope that only means not rush games.
@@nd_4726 Sega rushed BigRedButton and forced them to make the game exclusive to the Wii U while using an engine that the Wii U didn't support, so the game was a horrible buggy mess. It's unfortunate because of how much ambition was behind the project and it all went to waste.

Hey Nick. if you want my guess for what happened. Here's what I've pieced together may have happened:
Sega gave Blind Squirrel all the files for Sonic Colors and a very specific deadline for the game's release so that it wouldn't interfere with other plans.
I thought they just ripped all the assets and rebuilt the game in Godot

This has been a great series, Nick. I feel you on the desire to correct Sonic's missteps, wanting them to improve and become the greatest version of themselves that you know they could be. Thank you for these, and looking forward to more here and on Sunset City.
All I have to say about this game is they should’ve added Mother Wisp as the secret boss. Love the vids mate! 🖤
Agree
That would’ve been insane. Would’ve loved seeing an HD version of that. Especially since my first experience with Colors was the DS version.
I feel like Nier Replicant was the only remaster(remake?) of a game this year that gave me exactly what I would want from an updated re-release.
I'd love to check out the unused resources. Could you give me a link?
Couldn't say it any better.
Maybe have some moves based off lost world wisps and end it with it using the bomb to add some tension
the real ones stick around for the post-credits scene
Hi,
Could you please post a link to the employee review?
I'm in for the long run too, Sonic was one of the first franchises I picked up as a kid and got me interested in drawing.
Because from what I'm seeing people would rather purchase a $500 console to play an FPS boosted Sonic Unleashed than this mess.
i feel like SEGA (or at least sega of japan) sabotages sonic as a side effect of the seemingly present grudge they hold against their other branches (particularly with sega of america)
due to sonic being much more relevant overseas compared to his domestic fame
they likely view him and the series as a whole as an extension of their other units- and judging from how they treated the xtreme team when they needed more time/resources or how they specifically asked for the 32x when sega of america knew better than to release it, i feel like that certain level of corporate pettiness is what drives SEGA to crack down on their main mascot
and when you look at yakuza (a series that's very popular in japan) or even super monkey ball mania (which i think they see as an opportunity to finally gauge a domestic audience for the then-dormant franchise) being given the golden treatment for quality while sonic was left eating dirt this year, that seems pretty suspicious to me
In short, Sonic Team views any failure as something they must never do again.
(A never TV series, or more generalized Streaming show would be great.)
IDK but as someone who gets faceted by franchises and how they evolve, thrive and die, this situation makes me curious. It sort of like pokemon in a way, but in Pokemon's case the multi media almost dwarfs the games, where in this case sonic's games are still front and center.
Isn’t that what his “Post-Modern Sonic” video basically was?
You know it's a good video when it makes you wanna rant about this stuff in your own time lmao
But seriously, good job man. I know this must've taken a long time to make even before you had to split the video up into three parts, but it was well worth it.

HUGE step down from Eggmanland.
The ultimate version felt way harder compared to the original for some reason when i initially played it. Idk if they fixed it but yeah that existed
It was a challenge because the chase enemy is a fucking cheater in the Ultimate version. Went back to the Wii version to check, and it was easier there too. Either I'm snorting some high-concentration copium or he attacks and moves faster, for some inexplicable reason.

Yep, that's definitely it, now that you mention it.
This trilogy of videos is fantastic, man. You've hit a lot of marks I never expect to hear and your delivery on that ending is something else.

Thanks for the shoutout man! I’ve never watched your videos but I really enjoyed this one!
There won't be an Unleashed remake.
32:00 "Colors first led us to Generations."
I don't think so tbh.

Sonic will never be as good as it was back in the day as long as people buy their games.
It's also because SEGA only learn the wrong things as well.
10,000% Agree about lives systems. They have their place in games, particularly ones about completing obstacle courses. The change to Tails Saves was largely a detriment.
...Excuse me have you seen my shit? Cause at 40:15 I appear to have lost it with how funny and off guard that was.
This is an amazing series of essays on this game. I’m not the biggest Sonic fan but you’re probably the only person who’s gotten me rooting for Sonic and being sad even if I’m not an actual fan of these games. Keep making amazing content man!
Sega keeps suckling on Nintendo’s teat.
The only problem is Sega is allergic to their milk.
Tbh this is an awesome game. The only issue my game had was the audio
Audio is fixed now
@@bobbovine Yup
I understand the opinion, but it was already built upon by a solid game, so really imo that statement is very vague and doesn't add anything. Expand on why "Ultimate" is an awesome game. Such as idk the music, anything that "Ultimate" brang to the table then just a blanket statement, no offense.
@@bebopknux5857 This isn't a proffesional review or anything, this dude just said they like the game
60 FPS tho
remix Tropical Resort sounds like its playing through an iPhone 4s 30 yards away
*Sonic Colors Ultimate Pitch Meeting*
Blind Squirrel CEO: Okay, SEGA told us to make a Sonic Colors remaster, any ideas?
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: We should upgrade the graphics and enhance the overall design of the game to make it an even better experience but still keep what made the game special.
Blind Squirrel CEO: That sounds amazing!
But it also sounds like actual effort, and we don’t do that around here.
Blind Squirrel Staff #2: I have an idea! Hear me out...we should add a new wisp!
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: That’s a great idea! We could add some of the wisps from Sonic Rush or Lost World to add more variety to the world.
Blind Squirrel Staff #2: I have an even better idea, we add in the wisp from Team Sonic Racing
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: Yes...
Blind Squirrel Staff #2: And we modify some of the level design for the wisp
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: YES...
Blind Squirrel Staff #2: And it does the same exact thing as the Hover Wisp and it looks exactly like the Hover Wisp too!
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: YA- Wait what?
Blind Squirrel CEO: Yes! You’re being promoted to CEO after this meeting!
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: WHAT!?
Blind Squirrel Staff #3: That’s great and all, but I have an even better idea!
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: Okay...
Blind Squirrel Staff #3: We should enhance the graphics-
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: Ok...
Blind Squirrel Staff #3: By turning the bloom all the way on!
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: Are you seriou-
Blind Squirrel Staff #3: I’m not done, we should also leave the person who created the Blind Squirrel Engine uncredited
Blind Squirrel Staff #2: Good idea! We should also add Metal Sonic in the game-
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: That’s a good idea!
Blind Squirrel Staff #2: By putting in an unfinished Rival Rush mode with Metal Sonic using the same animations as Super Sonic, so we don’t have to make new animations!
Blind Squirrel Staff #3: Ya! And we should steal a fan render because we’re too lazy to use an actual SEGA render.
Blind Squirrel Staff #2: We should also rush the game out for September so we can make a lot of money on the holidays!
Blind Squirrel CEO: You guys are incredible! You’re being promoted to Lead Programmer!
Blind Squirrel Staff #1: What the hell is wrong with you guys!
Blind Squirrel CEO: You’re fired! Go home!
*Sonic Colors Ultimate actually comes out....*
Its funny how the concept of the Tail's Save mechanic implies that Tails is only willing to help Sonic out if he's got the tokens to afford it.
Glad to see another fellow with the Park Token glitch, thought I was alone on that one
I love SA2's mech stages, so I guess I'm just gonna suggest looking up the term "subjectivity."
10:18 So Crazy Gadget? God I can just hear Eggman in the loudspeakers going “Well done, Sonic! But you’ll never make it out of here alive! HAHA!”
17:26 That transition...
And I'm pretty sure all the big Unleashed fans(myself Included, admittedly) will just gravitate to that, rather than this seemingly half-hearted "remaster."
Congrats, SEGA!
I’m just mind blown looking back at Colors and seeing how it was so expressive compared to now, especially in forces
30:00: I think that's suppose to be a joke based around Hershey's Chocolate Tour, where you enter a tunnel that feels like being in an oven.
You just can't stop with Sonic Colors, there's so much to unpack
I'm watching this on a car ride from Texas to Colorado and the service is going in and out
I feel like the wisps are being overused, also add jade to the ULTIMATE COLOUR BLAST!
Was not ready for the spoiler alert at the end and how the music is put in that context
Advertising Surf Shark with music from Hydrocity Zone. Absolutely brilliant.
Holy crap I'm so happy someone caught that
I like Hydrocity Zone almost as much as I like debating the pronunciation. It's 'Hydrossity' by the way.
Wow, I really digged some of your witty lines in this one, thank you :)
You've also done a really good job at demonstrating how this is the worst version of Colours. Very good stuff
And man, I dunno if I read too much into what you say, but I feel a deep and layered skill with poetry in some of your more relevant points.
Holy crap, that last segment was unscripted? It really shows how much you love this game's legacy and the series itself.
Windows 11 came out with some issues as well. Only Windows updates (patches) fixed up Ryzen's scheduler. Microsoft clearly put no thought into AMD when designing the scheduler for Intel's 12th gen E-CORES. 25:55 I barely believe in patches.
God how do they go from astral coaster sounding so epic to tropical resort sounding like someone pulled out a midi piano
More like Sega stopped releasing games PERIOD (Forces is still the most recent game aside from TSR)
All of the Rush games are playable on Wii U, and thanks to all of the screen options the DS Virtual Console menu gives, is quite the experience.
well shoot you just took the cake for my favorite youtuber, like, the points you bring up are right, your jokes and such are funny, and like overall, i find myself having a happy time listening to you talk about the beautiful mess that is sonic the hedgehog, keep doing you man
Holy shit, Baldy Mcnosehair threatened to burn us to death...
That's amazing...
It would seem that a lot of people take constructive criticism of Sonic games as hate, then either get mad at it or decide to join in, which eventually snowballs into a huge storm where you can't tell the difference between people who actually hate the games or people who want them to improve. The entire internet is just a huge misunderstanding...
I love how the thumbnail is accurate.
I'll keep my Wii copy, thank you very much.
I for one look forward to next year when Frontiers inevitably winds up being another disappointment
I don’t really hate the jade ghost because I found it kinda fun attack with but it’s actual purpose of finding secrets is kinda bad
I just realized... are there still no lives in the Challenge Shuttle? If not, what's supposed to be the challenge to it since the difficulty was supposed to come from finishing the game in one sitting?
Still no.
Isn't that video under the credits what shows up when you play a music CD on the Saturn? Deep cut!
According to datamines, the Rival Rush and the profile icons were vestiges of a planned online multiplayer mode and leaderboards.
Only Sonic preorder I ever canceled. What a sorry state of affairs this became.
its almost sad how the one time sega decides to not rush a game out, they chose the worst possible developer to outsource to by complete fucking accident
18:21 Viva Pinata Party Animals achievements on Xbox 360, I know.
