If SEGA and Blind Squirrel want an easy mode, without insulting the intelligents of the average gamer, they should've just made Tails an optional playable character.
Solid review man! I wanna say you nailed it when you talked about how there’s a huge disconnect between the actual fans and the game journos that don’t care about Sonic. Now that I think about it, SEGA def has these people in their ears which is understandable I guess. Hopefully going forward we get a product that isn’t rushed and will have major appeal to the fans.
The fans can also be a problem though. Fans range from genuinely caring about the direction of a product, to blindly loving everything it does. maybe a better approach is to look at what the fans enjoy from the fangame community for direction. The last time they did that (mania) worked out amazingly for them
It disappoints me that a game I grew up with ended up with a mess of a remaster. Lack of options, over use of bloom, cut content, long loading times, lack of polish, and lots of glitches. Its sad because this remaster did some things right but for everything it does right it does 2 things wrong. I had a fun time with this game but its a mess of a remaster either way.
Yeah I felt so bad learning that Metal Sonic being playable was cut content. When they announced Ultimate and revealed Metal Sonic for Rival Rush saying there’d be a “Great reward” for beating all of the races, my immediate thought was “THEY’RE MAKING HIM PLAYABLE, FINALLY Metal is going to be playable again!” Aaaaaand nope. They cut it.
This is basically the exact same situation with Pokemon Sword and Shield. Half of the fans are toxically positive, ignoring the glaring flaws of the game and taking every form of criticism as a personal attack, while the other half is simply triyng to voice their complaints and want to make other fans and the company aware of all the flaws so we can get better games next time. I'm both a Pokemon fan and a Sonic fan and these 2 franchises are surprisingly similar.
But with Sword and shield its was way worse, probably because this is just a random remaster that was clearly rushed because they had nothing to release this year, while SW/SH was a mainline game an the first one to be on a console
"The thing about the original Colors on the Wii was that it already was a decently easy game" Me, who 100%ed Unleashed Wii but could not even *finish* Colors: *cough* uhhhh yesexactly I don't think I'll be getting this game though. The original Colors was one of the biggest disappointments for 13 year old me back when it came out and time only made me dislike it more for a multitude of reasons and even after I tried giving it multiple chances. Glad you got enjoyment out of it though :) Edit: 22:48 How dare you forget the "Sonic had a rough transition to 3D" line!11! :') Jokes aside I do really feel that part about how it's catering more to reviewers and journalists. Some good points there
Hopefully Sega doesn’t rush more games, I’m worried that this’ll be a major blow to Blind Squirrel’s reputation when Sega put them in a no win situation. They damaged Big Red Button with their carelessness and these developers do not deserve all of the hate they’re receiving.
You're very much like me in this case. I was very blegh on the original colours yet the whole thing just clicked for me this time in spite of the clear issues with the Ultimate port.
Sonic Colours Ultimate is basically the reverse of past Sonic games around the Dark Age. Instead of being loved by fans but hated by critics, it's loved by critics and hated by fans. Guess reviewers really love the lack of ''Sonic's stupid friends'', easiness for their rather bad playing and Baldy McNosehair.

I'll still always prefer the DS version tbh, it's just not the "ultimate" version imho without the DS content and even if you play the remake =/= remaster card it was later discovered new content (such as playable Metal Sonic) were scrapped in SCU. While I'm glad a major issue (potential seizure inducing glitches) is gone, the whole aftermath of SCU has left much to be desired plus the game still needs more work... :/
@SMTrules “Sonic Colours is a good time. In a vacuum, outside of the heavy usage of 2D, it’s great.” That’s a weird way of saying only around 10% of the game is great. Eh, I'm pretty sure I'll never play Colors. I say this as somoene who used to love Generations enough to 100% it and replay it over and over, but I haven't geneuinely played it since like 2013-2014. Last time I tired to go back to it in 2018, I just couldn't enjoy it anymore. I'm just completely done with boost gameplay, nothing about it will ever make me enjoy it ever again. At least, so long as it remains the status quo for mainline titles. I want Sonic games to be more platform-centric/momentum-based, if not, go back to the Adventure formula. Keep in mind I'm not saying all boost games are bad. At the very least, I'll always respect and appreciate Unleashed for its ambition and story.

Completely agree, criticism should be a healthy practice to ensure that the company sees and acknowledges the grievances from the consumer and answers them if really necessary. But with colors ultimate these aspects have been muddied, people treat all the issues found to be the same across the different platforms. Most casual consumers don't know that the real harm inducing glitches are primarily on the switch and will write it off like all versions are like this. But at the same time the blind defenders need to take their hands out of their ears and realize that not acknowledging an issue is not gonna help anything/anyone moving forward. Your video is probably one of the few I've seen to actually draw a line in the sand and talk about the positives and also address the negatives and issues but make the distinction that it's not the same a cross the board in terms of severity. That "Seizure Glitch" part reminded me of one of the stages of Space Channel 5. Colors Ultimate's Glitch doesn't come close to the strength of the aforementioned level (Don't go see if you want to be okay. If you want to see, I suggest turning on the lights, lowering your device's brightness, and moving away from the screen.)
I have a few reasons why I want to stay with the original game, most of them are minor, but because of its price in the currency of my country, I'm deeply unmotivated to buy it. Firstly, the biggest problems to me if I intended on buying and playing it, is the perfect homing attack sound effect, it's so loud, it pierces through my ears, but the physical problems doesn't stop there, because we have Starlight Carnival, which ended up getting way too bright, I have to lower the brightness of my screen if I want to see it with no problems, which would be a bigger problem if I have to control Sonic myself. The rest of the problems are smaller since they don't physically hurt me, but they still bother me, like how most of the stage looks, like Tropical Resort, which lost most of its fun on its visuals, but the rest of the stages suffered a lot less, Sweet Mountain looks great for the most part, even if I like the original's colors better, but the fact that they forgot to add shadows to a few parts bother me, it's a problem I can overlook, but I don't think it will ever be fixed, I think Aquarium Park is the best looking stage overall, it's the only one I actually like over the original, most of the problems I have left, you've already said on the video so I won't repeat it I can't talk about the gameplay itself because I haven't played this version, but the problems outside of it are already a deal breaker to me... but welp, Sonic is my favorite franchise, I'll probably buy it three years later like I did to Forces (add +2 years when the new Sonic game comes out), but as for now, I'll be staying with the original version. For the people willing to buy the remaster, have fun :)
This also made some red rings much easier now as the one in Starlight Carnival you need to go around on with Spikes before it blew up and you died, simply grab it and then Tails will save you.
I really enjoyed your review! It was well-organized and paced. I think I'm going to wait for the game to patch itself before I get it for Switch. Hearing about the lower resolutions and fps bums me out.
I had the exact same feeling about 100%ing everything when I replayed the game on Dolphin. I think it more has to do with already knowing what to expect when you play the game and finding it much easier to tolerate the flaws. You know how to play the game and how its designed so its much easier to get through it rather than expecting something more.
I appreciate your rants and tangent throughout these videos about the current situation with the franchise. As an (relatively) old-time Sonic fan, it feels nice to know I'm not alone in disagreeing with the current direction the series is taking, and with good arguments to be made about it instead of being told I just hate it because it's different like I'm being told all the time by toxically positive meta era fans who always disregard old-time fans as whiny fanboys.
Did you know that the layout of the special stages in sonic colors ultimate are similar to those of sonic 1 (The zones; green hill, scrap brain, and etc.)
@@chaomix I have it (but haven't beaten it because I fail). It's kind of Rush 3 minus Blaze and grind tricks but with the wisp powers & red rings. Made up for lack of 3D with at least 1 wisp type that isn't in the Wii version. Also fewer levels per "zone" IIRC. Extended cast show up for "challenge" mini-stages.
Man, I just feel bad that they didn't push to have DS there too... Like, fully 2D levels aren't that hard to make, esspecially when pre designed and they are supposed to share the graphical assets, so... I just wanted mother wisp... She was a fun boss.
Glad to see someone else appreciate the Mother Wisp also iirc the DS version is actually the "canon" version (if anyone still cares about the Sonic continuity).
While I concede that the gameplay is decent enough, I wouldn't say I enjoyed colors very much. Perhaps the boost style just isn't for me, since I wasn't too big on generations either (even if I can acknowledge that it is genuinely a good game). My biggest gripe, however, comes from the characterization. All of the characters are so...boring, man. They're so one note, it's almost painful listening to them speak. The only real exception to this being Eggman whose voice and mannerisms are so iconic at this point that he practically carries the series for me, in spite of the writers' repeated failures. For the sake of ending this on a positive note, I will say that the character customization between Forces and Colors Ultimate are really good additions that I hope get fleshed out and are here to stay.
Totally agree. I actually really like the boost gameplay though, especially in Generations. That game is soooo fun IMO. But yeah, the story in most of these games just isn't for me I guess...
@@chaomix I definitely think there's a fine balance to be found in regards to the story and character writing, which can be safe for children while still being appealing to the now-older audience. I think the early 3d Sonic games did well at telling somewhat compelling stories with charming characters while still having those upbeat, cheesy moments and making them work. I think the biggest problem with the more recent Sonic games is that it very much talks down to its audience and presumes that children can't handle serious themes. Even Forces felt like a lot of the stakes of an otherwise dark situation were severely undercut by how the characters were written.
I 100%'d this in like 3 days on PlayStation and I was like "I remembered the game being harder..." Must've been a mixture of being a young kid when I played Sonic Colors on Wii and just being incompetent somehow. The only S rank I struggled with was the one for Frigate Skullian. That one's like a mixture of the boss positioning himself properly and beating him at the right time.
Watching this 9 months later, and I just have to say I’m so FUCKING sick of the “the game isn’t out yet” defense. Literally every single time fans point out legitimate problems in the trailers for a game, we always get hit with “the game isn’t out yet.” Colors ultimate was FILLED with stuff fans were concerned about and pointed out. The lighting, Sonic’s model, the AI upscale cutscenes, and more. When the game was first announced we get the “it’s just the first trailer, wait for the next trailer to drop” than that happens and the problems are still there, and people will say “wait for the game to come out.” Then the game comes out and they say “wait until you finish the game.” How many times are we going to do this? How many times will people blindly defend what very clearly looks like shit to the very end? Sonic forces, TSR, lost world, boom, and now frontiers? I understand difference in opinion, but this is repetitive, and tedious dealing with.
From what I’ve seen, the game was built in the Godot game engine which, in its current state, has some issues with more intensive 3D games. So in the end, it wasn’t your pc struggling, but rather the game engine itself.
I know this remaster isn’t perfect, but I’m still looking forward to getting it for my switch and playing it! The bloom effect looks really pretty to me tbh.
unpopular opinion; i like the idea of limited boost. i like the idea of it being a reward for good gameplay, instead of hand-given. instead of wisps, i’d put more rings on the ‘higher’ pathways, and make it so stages don’t rely on the boost to be cohesive (so no enemy fodder crowds)
Man I remember when there was a leak of an image of sonic colors ultimate before it came out and it showed a tails icon that looked like a life icon and everyone thought tails was going to be playable at first but no when Sega confirmed and showed that tails wouldn’t be playable and instead be some type of stupid helping gimmick they screwed up everything and I will never forgive Sega for that but I hope that tails becomes a playable character for once again in a mainline 3D sonic game at launch
IDW Sonic Comics: makes an arc based around glitch characters(kinda) Sonic Colors Ultimate: Sonic Fish Me: Hey Sega, can I make a anthropomorphic Fish OC?
I got to meet a dev in Sonic Speed Simulator, i pitched them the idea of the chao garden, and they said they liked it! which means they will problably add it
17:51 I'm planning on a 2700+underclocked 3070 on a 450w Silverstone Nightjar PSU with Windows 7/11 in mind since Windows 11 requires TPM+Pinnacle Ryzen. And Windows 7 with proper chipset drivers actually work with Ryzen 1&2, and even 3 if you're a modding nerd for B550/X570 motherboards.

I can't talk about the gameplay itself because I haven't played this version, but the problems outside of it are already a deal breaker to me... but welp, Sonic is my favorite franchise, I'll probably buy it three years later like I did to Forces (add +2 years when the new Sonic game comes out), but as for now, I'll be staying with the original version.
Lmao I loved the sponsorship
I had the exact same feeling about 100%ing everything when I replayed the game on Dolphin. I think it more has to do with already knowing what to expect when you play the game and finding it much easier to tolerate the flaws. You know how to play the game and how its designed so its much easier to get through it rather than expecting something more.
8:50 Duck Duck, it's Duckles!
Seizure glitch: *exists*
Me: Sonic...you're supposed to _absorb_ the Wisps, not _swallow_ them. smh.
Welp, he's just stoned now, so that's a thing.
Please, Sega, I just want rolling to be a mechanic in sonic games again. It’s literally the defining trait of hedgehogs.
Chaomix: "I've kind of seen the light"
Me: "Yeah, it's everywhere"
I appreciate your rants and tangent throughout these videos about the current situation with the franchise. As an (relatively) old-time Sonic fan, it feels nice to know I'm not alone in disagreeing with the current direction the series is taking, and with good arguments to be made about it instead of being told I just hate it because it's different like I'm being told all the time by toxically positive meta era fans who always disregard old-time fans as whiny fanboys.
hey chaomix it would be great to see a tier list of your favorite sonic video games.
Can’t wait for the Aqua Wisp to allow Sonic to turn into the Submarine in the thumbnail
Did you know that the layout of the special stages in sonic colors ultimate are similar to those of sonic 1
(The zones; green hill, scrap brain, and etc.)
“Glitches that cause seizures”
Blind Squirrels indeed
18:46 “This game launched in a very rough state.”
As rough as Sonic’s transition into 3D?
Oh come on, does sega think that kids suck at video games? I’m pretty sure DIMPS knew that kids were not babys
“All dreams have meaning”

Is not a fish, is Chaos, Chaos was planned for Sonic Colors Ultimate :D
Colors DS is the best version of Colors.
I still haven't played it but I always hear that. I guess it means I gotta give it a try!
This is the realest thing I’ve ever read
SEGA DON'T MESS UP GENS ULTIMATE
Therapist: Sonic the fish isnt real and cant hurt you. The thumbnail:
I had the framerate stutters on PS4 and PS5 (via external SSD) but not on my PS5's internal SSD.
@@lynxfresh5214 technically both are referanced in future games, so they more or less happen at the same time
Would be nice if Mother Wisp was included as a Super boss in Ultimate.
it wasn't your cup of tea, it was your mug of coffee
sussy switch version
The thumbnail is pure gold.
I love how you drew SonFish the HedgeDolphin on the thumbnail. I love that glitch so much but sadly it is now removed
“An opposite glow up, but a literal glow up at the same time” LMAO
... That thumbnail...
*I love it! :D*
Metal sonic is your best run on a stage with random boost areas and an edited path.
I find it really funny that for some reason they got rid of the do you accept option from metal sonic
I think people memed on it too hard lol
Love the "Welcome to the next level" shirt
"Sonic's other greatest rival..."
*shows a Lucky Charms Commercial*
Why do I feel low key betrayed that he said he had fun with Colors? I guess I have to play it too although Project 06 is still my go to remaster
Frame stutters in a Sonic game is about as acceptable as a Halo without Co-Op.
Oh wait...
Oof too soon lol
Ahhh yes, Sonic the Seaman, my favorite video game franchise!
I know this remaster isn’t perfect, but I’m still looking forward to getting it for my switch and playing it! The bloom effect looks really pretty to me tbh.
unpopular opinion; i like the idea of limited boost. i like the idea of it being a reward for good gameplay, instead of hand-given.
instead of wisps, i’d put more rings on the ‘higher’ pathways, and make it so stages don’t rely on the boost to be cohesive (so no enemy fodder crowds)
chaomix saying "sussy" unironically gives me nightmares
Man I remember when there was a leak of an image of sonic colors ultimate before it came out and it showed a tails icon that looked like a life icon and everyone thought tails was going to be playable at first but no when Sega confirmed and showed that tails wouldn’t be playable and instead be some type of stupid helping gimmick they screwed up everything and I will never forgive Sega for that but I hope that tails becomes a playable character for once again in a mainline 3D sonic game at launch
IDW Sonic Comics: makes an arc based around glitch characters(kinda)
Sonic Colors Ultimate: Sonic Fish
Me: Hey Sega, can I make a anthropomorphic Fish OC?
I love how you can play the black alt sonic from smash bros in this game
"I'm not a rat. I'm a hedgehog." - Sonic the hedgehog
Weird thing:
One of my online friends complained about people complaining about sonic forces and sonic colors ultimate
This is actually the most fair review I've ever watched nice one dude 👏
I can see the choking and terror in Chaomix's face as he makes his confession about SCU being fun
Chaomix: can you bring back the chao Garden please
Sega: blocky chaos take it or leave it
They also said they would take their time when Sonic Forces was in development, yet look how that game turned out. -_-
I got to meet a dev in Sonic Speed Simulator, i pitched them the idea of the chao garden, and they said they liked it!
which means they will problably add it
Great, now you've blessed us with Sonic the Rainbow Fish.
Hey at least Sonic can swim now in this form
Sonic Colors Ultimate is an Amazing game. It’s just the Bugs in the Way.
congrats for the sponsor!
Fish sonic
Ironically more original than most sonic oc's
the eyelids were the first thing i complained about
20:14 ahh it's like casino night zone in the mobile version of sonic 4 episode 1
I been playing Colours on Wii again and I think it's become my favourite Sonic game ever. Maybe a little nostalgia is tossed in there
