8:39 It's a problem with the predominant winds and sea currents. These systems are called gyres. The north atlantic gyre makes it so that you can go south towards the equator with relative ease, but then it directs you to to northern coast of south america, the caribbean, along the north american coast and back to europe. This is of course nice if you want to go there and know that there is an america, but really bad if you want to go up the African coast again (that is why some conspiracy theorists say that Portugal already knew of a continent across the ocean when Columbus first offered his service to Portugal and didn't want to fund him to keep that secret, also related to the hypothetical Mali naval expedition to America in the 1300s). If you continue south of the equator, you get into the south atlantic gyre system where the flow of water and winds works against you going further south. It took a lot of ship building techniques and sailing experience to work their way south.
Then once you get where you're going, you need to get back. Sometimes if they missed a departure date, it was better to wait a year, then to risk the winds and currents off season.
That's how Brazil was an useful stop when the Portuguese went to India, it's easier to cross the atlantic to then go east than to go along the african coast, what they called "a volta do mar"
Dude! I love this move to have guides on the different new paths. I’d love to see a new guide on the England to UK path, as everyone is doing the new Angevin path, but the UK path is not the same it was.
Because it is new, but in the end, you can still enforce the Union in UK mission path, get the HRE emporship the old way with 3 electors as ally, and still get the new fancy colonial mission. Angevin path makes you weaker in global play, but stronger military wise. The UK parth is single player, the angevin path the multiplayer version of the mission tree.
@@aqvamarek5316 I just annexed most of the French region in the England to UK path. Even with the huge coalition, it only gets unworkable around the time I started colonizing, so the only thing I had to pay attention was keeping strong alliances, and 100% army force limit.
ludi new change to estates means if you have one colonist you can get new World charter privilege which also gives you a decision to recruit an explorer so you don't need exploration just first idea of expansion
Ive found that an earlier war on tlemcen as a rival for humiliate within the first year can be pretty op if combined with insulting rivals for ~75 pp, gives you the +1 mana points from the start of the game for earlier colonies, and no need to war morrocco later (tlemcen almost never gets allies, if they do theyre the tunisian minors)
19:10 This is why I always go native assimilation and combine it with the clergy modifier. Gives me 0% uprising change and more assimilation events AND I don't have to keep my troops there. Far more worth it than 20 settler growth.
yep, ever since they added those privileges its a no brainer going native assimilation and just forgetting about the colonies while also getting the production buffs. because you can also get free explorer from those every few years you could even just skip exploration and go straight for expansion.
You can embargo castile and it's worth once you have more than 50% in Sevilla, even if they are your allies(just keep improving relations and getting trust for favors). It's especially important to do it of you like to conquer the ivory Coast early
Ludi, the reason your explorers did not sail south along West Africa is because Cape Bojador is very dangerous to sail and was first successfully navigated only in 1434 and the first to reach the Ivory Coast was not until 1483. Basically it was harder to reach South Africa than to reach North America.
On the start of campaing before calling a diet, u can take burger loans and start building troops using all of ur manpower, then call diet in hope that u will get 50% cheaper mil advisor for having 50% of manpower. You take that mission, then cancel all of troops u clicked to build, and beng you got yourself cheaper advisor, of course it isnt guaranteed but its cool way to start in my opinion.
The problem I keep having with a Spain-friendly Portugal is that while I go and do all the colonization work, the money all pours into the Sevilla trade node, and Spain gets around half of it for no work, because they passively get a lot of control of it just by upgrading their many trading towns. How to beef up my control of Sevilla without fighting the all-powerful Spaniards?
What I like to do with my flagship as Portugal is a simple light ship with only explo range, and that's it. It saves a ducat or two and since you'll most likely be destroying it and building a proper flagship later w/o the explo bonus, extra flagship modifiers aren't really necessary
Ludi, now you don`t need crappy exploration idea. You can get explorers via decision from burgers, when you have 1 colonist. So just go Expansion and take something better than exploration :) Or if you wanna to rush it then only 3 exploration ideas and later replace this with something better
