      Hey, Richard, you're into all things metal and are currently wearing corpse paint. What do you think about DETHKLOK coming back with a special on HBO MAX? I think of it like the bad girl I knew in high school that would never date me, but would show up whenever I was happy and in a relationship, hook up with me, ruin my relationship and happiness, and then ghost me. I love DETHKLOK, but they can't just wander into my life and expect me to love them again like they didn't just abandon me for years.
      Who am I kidding? I'm going to forgive them, be happy, and get hurt all over again. 🤘

    I'm a relatively recent fan of Dragon Quest. My first time actually playing one of the games was when I tried out the demo of XI S on switch in 2019 after I saw how many people were happy about the Smash Bros. Hero reveal. I played it for around three hours or so and knew I was in for something special, so I stopped playing the demo and decided to check out more Dragon Quest games before XI S was released. For some reason I thought I could play through all of the main games by then, starting with the original on the NES.
    Man, what an experience! I decided to go all in with the old-school style. I didn't look anything up, I took detailed notes about each enemy and town, and even drew my own maps. I often see people complain about the simplicity and relatively small scale of the original, but I think it was precisely because of its simplicity that I loved it so much. Taking all those notes never felt overwhelming because there were only so many things I had to worry about, and it really let me completely immerse myself with the game. Having your total amount of gold and experience be displayed at all times during battles was such a great addition too! Being able to easily keep precise tabs of your progress towards buying that new shiny equipment without having to do any extra inputs really kept the grinding from feeling mindless. These aspects might seem really insignificant, but I really felt their absence right away after continuing with Dragon Quest II. The slight increase in complexity made taking notes more annoying, and I stopped taking them pretty quickly and just looked stuff up whenever I got stuck. Now, I'm not saying the later games aren't as good, but what I'm trying to say is that I think there's still something very special about the original even after all these years, despite a lot of people just thinking about it as a stepping stone for the series.
    Anyways, I only managed to beat the first two games and play a little bit of III before XI S came out, so I started playing that instead, and had a wonderful time. I didn't give up on my quest of playing them all though! Still working my way through them, albeit very slowly. Currently on about 60%-ish(?) into V, and it might be my favorite so far!

    I absolutely still love this series, it's influenced me so much over my life. While I've never played the original release, I do have it and I've played through the GBC, SFC and mobile/Switch releases multiple times. It's definitely not the best in the series, but there's something comforting about how short and simple this game is. It's one of the few RPGs I can just turn my brain off and play when I'm feeling bored as opposed to being a huge time sink like most games of the JRPG genre.

    I didn't discover this series until I was an adult and found an NES cartridge of the first game at a garage sale for $7. Now I'm obsessed with the series and DQ3 is one of my most favorite games of all time.

    I wouldn't say Persona "forgets" its earlier games, the franchise is built on growth and change. Persona is a spin-off of the Devil Summoner series, itself being a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei if, which is a spin-off of the original Shin Megami Tensei game, which is a spin-off of the original Megami Tensei game, being itself an adaptation of the original novels.
    I get your point but I feel like it's a little bit like comparing apples to oranges.

    Man, getting an RPG Fortress notification and it turning out to be Dragon Quest is like lifting the cover of a gourmet meal and finding a plague-infested rat instead. I DESPISE Akira Toriyama's video game art. The gross little bobble head creatures they call characters are beyond creepy to me. This means no Dragon Quest, no Blue Dragon, and no Chrono Trigger. I've tried to play several of the games over the decades, but I just can't enjoy any games with his art.
    Still a great video. I mean, any mention of Manowar gets bonus points in my book. Need to get some Gloryhammer up in here...
    And if I want some good Star Trek, I'll do the triple threat: watch The Inner Light, The Visitor, and (spoilers) the funeral of Spock from Wrath of Kahn without crying. It can't be done.

      also, if Akira Toriyama was not the artist, the series would never have become as influential as it is. Whatever you say about the human designs (which are great, btw), i guess, but the monster designs are part of what made the series so charming

    • @100Servings
      @100Servings 11 місяців тому +1

      @@KanterburyGuardian You know what? I'll give you that. A lot of the monsters are cute and charming. The slime is truly an iconic character design, even more than the moogle or Myau. I just don't like the humans or villains, especially kids, with their weird bobble heads and creepy faces. Toriyama's designs are often less than inspired as well, especially in Blue Dragon.
      It's just an opinion though. Art is subjective. Just because lots of people like it doesn't mean everyone does, and it's not wrong to dislike something. We're allowed to disagree, and I appreciate you being respectful and polite about it.

      @@100Servings I respect your opinion, i get that Akira Toriyama's art doesn't appeal to all, but i don't really like the "plague-infested rat" analogy you used

      @@KanterburyGuardian Okay, that was harsh. I must have really been in a mood that day. Sorry about that.
      And to be fair, I like modern Dragon Ball because they've made his style a little more realistic and toned down, while keeping a lot of the original designs, like a maturing of his art and style. The characters are also a lot more detailed. It was kind of like growing up in the 1980s with Robotech, then watching Macross Plus early in my military career.
