why does the sprite for alis look like deanna troi

    • @100Servings
      @100Servings Рік тому +3

Other way around. They cast Marina Sirtis as Security Chief LT Macha Hernandez, then Gene Roddenberry swapped her and Denise Crosby before the show went into production. Alis' sprite was based on Sirtis as the tough and firey officer at tactical that never made it onto the show based only on pre-production casting.
Of course, most of this is only my head canon, but I still think it's pretty funny. They really did switch Sirtis and Crosby's roles, however.
Also, nice shout out to Zillion. I played an unhealthy amount of that game, and it never had an equal, including its sequels. UA-camr Bennett the Sage had the VHS of the anime on his shelf in every video for years, but he never reviewed it. My disappointment is limitless.

My absolutely favorite 8-bit rpg I really wish this game would get a massive big budget remake. We’ll all of them really not just this one.

13:56 That is incorrect. The first Dragon Quest to have animated enemies was DQ6 on the Super Famicom. They would later use this new engine to remake DQ3.
Either way, great review! I had played the Sega AGES release of this game a few years ago, and it was amazing.

@RPGFort It was an honest mistake, and hey, still pretty darn impressive that Phantasy Star managed to beat them in this detail by that much.

I have SOOOOooooo much to say about this game... but not just about the game... the time of my life in which I played it, and how I eventually conquered it. Forgive me... this is going to be long, buckle up!
The first time I saw this game was on my grade school friends SMS... he was the only friend I had, who owned a SMS and this was one of the games he had.
He seemed to like it, but at this stage of my life (I was maybe 11 or 12) I had never played an RPG on any platform, and if I heard the term, I would have immediately thought of Dungeons and Dragons. Needless to say, when he showed it to me, it almost looked like a game for kids much younger than me. The characters looked to me like paper dolls... completely devoid of "action" like a Link in Legend of Zelda. While the dungeons looked cool, as soon as I took a step too far and fought something that wiped the floor with me... or dropped into a pit and got lost, I got anxiety and didn't want to play anymore. All I wanted to do was play his copies of Double Dragon and R-Type which were game styles I was far more accustomed to.
Now, fast forward maybe a year from then, I got a subscription of Nintendo Power, which came with a copy of Dragon Warrior and a hint guide. I was a pretty poor kid, of a single mother living in a ghetto... and new NES games were very few and far between... the thought of a "Free" NES game was unheard of outside of stealing, and I didn't care if it wasn't a game I would have picked out of a store... it was a new game, and I was going to play it over anything I had already beat to death.
I really ended up liking the style of Dragon Warrior once I felt that endorphin hits of "leveling up and becoming powerful" kick in and then I was hooked. After finishing it, I was open to play any game like it, and saw that style of game to be a great value because of how long it took me to finish it.
Around the time I finished it, Nintendo was heavily promoting Final Fantasy which I was all in for. I never owned this game, but my friend Jason did because I somehow talked him into buying it (so I could selfishly play it). I LOVED this game, it felt like Dragon Warrior only better in every way. At this stage, I was hooked and wanted to play any RPG I could get my hands on. They never released any more Final Fantasy's on the NES in the US, but they had released more Dragon Warriors... sadly, that whole "being poor" thing haunted me, as Dragon Warrior 2-4 were not only NOT free, but about $20 more than typical games. Even many years later, at Funcoland, these games were $35-50 USED while other games at that time were sometimes only a couple dollars... and therefore never got to experience any of them till MUCH later in life.
Now this brings me back to Phantasy Star. While I was one of the last kids I knew to have a NES, I was one of the first kids to get a Genesis. I had been saving up my money for one and my birthday/Christmas are very close together... so raising the $189.99 to buy a Genesis was halfway complete after those two events... and a lot of lawn mowing pushed me over the top. I didn't have enough money to buy a game with the system, but at the time, they had a coupon you could mail in to get another game on top of the pack in Altered Beast (I picked Ghouls n Ghosts, but thats irrelevant). What I DID have enough money to buy shortly after was a "Power Base Converter". At this time, my SMS friend let me borrow ALL HIS SMS system games because his SMS broke and he wasn't going to get another one. Among those games... yes... Phantasy Star.
This was such a fun period of my life. I was one of the few kids I knew that had a Genesis, and despite being broke, I had inherited a ton of new games to play. I went directly to Phantasy Star and used what I had learned playing Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy to overcome its challenges.
We didn't have the fancy Internet or even hint guides back then... no, you had word of mouth... and let me tell you... finding someone who not only played Phantasy Star, but ACTUALLY had any good information for it was nearly impossible... but I lucked out. Every couple of weeks, my mom would take me to the Granite Run Mall about 10 miles from my house and they had a software store... maybe it was a Babbages or a Software Ext.... but thats not important... what was important was it was run by college kids, and they not only had finished Phantasy Star, they were all fired up for Phantasy Star 2 that had just come out. They thought it was cool that this twerpy 12 year old was actually taking on Phantasy Star, and they would help me when I got stuck in the game... where to find a key item, or where to find an objective that moved me through the plot.
I had so much fun beating this game, I loved the music, I drew the characters for days and I was like a Phantasy Star evangelist at school. Most kids weren't interested in RPGs... but I was the kid who had a Genesis, and I guess that gave me SOME cred... and I got people interested in it.
I eventually started getting really into other Genesis RPGs as well as continuing the Final Fantasy path through SNES... but Phantasy Star 2 meant so much to me... I was completely enveloped by the storyline, I immediately identified and fell in love with all the characters and I used to draw them on all my school books and homework.
Many years later, when Genesis and SNES were hitting the end of their life... and people had moved onto the Saturn and Playstation, I really longed to play Phantasy Star again. I don't know if I had sold Phantasy Star, or lent it to someone and never got it back... but I really wanted to play Phantasy Star 1 again, and I had no way to play it... or did I?
Yes... I found out that they released a compilation of Phantasy Star games on the Sega Saturn and yes... I imported it. Was it a terrible idea not being able to speak a LICK of Japanese? Probably... but you bet your ass the motivation was to play Phantasy Star 1 again, and I did it by writing down the katkana and learning to associate it with known Items, Key Items and spells through trial and error. I jotted this all down on note paper which I stuffed in the box. It added a new challenge, but soon... I just had it all memorized and my dreams of playing the game again came true. There were also a lot of maps and in game features that really fleshed out what made Phantasy Star magical in a digital way I had never experienced.
You mentioned this already... and I whole heartedly agree... the best way to play this game is on the Switch... the Port of this game had grown ups with limited time in mind. The grinding is very heavy in the game, and getting money and experience at roughly a 5x faster rate really speeds up the slow part of the game, and the in game maps saves you from pulling out graph paper. I was able to complete it in maybe 6-7 hours simply on what I remembered about the game and it was an amazing nostalgic experience at a pittance of what it would cost to buy and play again.
Anyway... I'm really happy you covered this... I'd love to hear what you have to say about PS2 (my favorite of the series). There have been some amazing retrospective videos done on it, and they really hit home on the underlying theme of the plot and looking at the world today, almost seems prophetic. I can admit that PS4 is a "better more enjoyable game" but PS2 has far more meaning to me as well as PS1 than 4 which is a much more enjoyable fun experience. 3... we don't talk about three... and remains the game I most want to see re-done with as much of the original OG Phantasy Star team (which I believe moved to Team Sonic). Man... they could REALLY do that game justice... but sadly, they will make it 3D and do something to it I will no doubt hate (my fears were realized with Actraiser remake... the remake that should have never been made, but instead they should have re-made Actraiser 2 and added in the world building stuff of Actraiser 1).
Ok... I'm rambling at this point. I imagine you are the only person who's going to read it, but if you do, it was worth writing and sharing.

This is an amazing reply and story. Thank you for taking the time to tell me this tale. I can see Phantasy Star has really touched your life in a special way! Rest assured, I will get back to PS2 and review it at some stage. I've beat that one twice, but both were a very long time ago. If you go digging back through my videos, I have a "whole series" retrospective for the PS titles. I touch on each game for a little bit. I am really looking forward to going back to PSIV soon as that along with Shining Force II are my two favourite games ever.

Hello how are you? I'm Brazilian and I'm a like sou much of your channel!! Because I'm a fan of Phantasy Star. Did you hear that Phantasy Star creator Rieko Kodama has passed away? I did an interview with her in 2020, and coincidentally it was only published on the day she was announced. Would you be interested in reading the interview? I asked her about the possibility of them doing a Phantasy Star V. I can give you the interview, but it is in Portuguese. But I believe that putting it in Google Translate it is possible to translate easily. I have the interview done in Japanese too.

I have to give a shout out to The KHC here on UA-cam. He did a massive deep dive on the entire franchise across three videos, including the mangas. The artwork in them is so perfect it brings a tear to my eye. So if you want to hear a strange German violently express his love for Phantasy Star, take a look.

I don't want to complain, but when I recently replaying the entire Phantasy Star series, I didn't feel the grinding problem. Especially in Phantasy Star 1 and 4. Even in the worst Phantasy Star 2 in this regard, there were no problems with this due to opponents attacking you too actively, which forced you to constantly return to medical centers...

WOW! You really forgot to mention that Phantasy Star 1 was the FIRST west console RPG ever! It was released in November 1988 in USA and Europe!
When Final Fantasy 1 came out Only in July 1990 and only in North America! Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest 1) was released in August 1989 in North America.
    That makes a big difference!

Want to know the biggest difference between Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star? Fans of Phantasy Star always want more in any form we can get it, while Final Fantasy 16's sales dropped 90% in Japan in the second week of release. It's a disaster.
This is what happens when you make a game out of obligation instead of inspiration.
