  • Don't let your Avocado Tree do this! Avocado Pruning Tips
You have to pay attention to your avocado trees, because it’s easy for a branch to start to grow and start getting out of control without you noticing it and by the time you do notice it, it’s become a large branch that could be pulling lots of nutrients away from your main tree. So if you’re pruning off any suckers or water shoots, you may need to follow up and check your tree every couple of months just to make sure you’re not letting new ones come up and suck nutrients away from the tree. Do you want that tree to focus all of its energy on new growth from the graft and up or putting all of its energy into fruit production.

How do you feel about nursery stakes?
Over the past month or so I have gotten about 11 different varieties and planted them in my back. From 5gal to 25gal.
One thing I noticed is they are extremely dependent on the stake and I don’t like that. I removed the stakes and gave them a hard prune so they could stand on their own.
People have said I should have just left it for 3-5 years until they are so big they no longer need it. For some reason that doesn’t seem like good advice to me.
    What are your thoughts?

I’ve thought about this a lot.
I have been lucky to visit grow out nurseries and the reason they use the stakes is because they have all the plants packed together. This causes them to become leggy. So they need the stakes to hold them upright while they get thicker stronger stocks.
So I do agree they need the stakes but I think 6 months to a year. After that the tree should have of put roots down and the stock should have of thickened up enough to handle the winds.
      Hopefully that’s somewhat helpful.

@@WarGardensForVictory thank you. It’s been 8 days since that comment and the pruning and already the plants have shot out new growth. Honestly I’m happy I just got it over with early on.

It depends on which verity it is. If it’s a seed grow tree it’s hard to tell. But if it’s a main grown verity then you should be able to find it online.
