Being a gamer, who owns a pet, and who never seems to settle down in a single place for long... This video (and the tour one) gives me hope. It really does.
How is your pet?

I've been researching van life heavily because my job is about to go 100% digital, and after taking a road trip across the country last year all I can think about is getting back out there and traveling. This video literally answered all of my questions about how I would make that happen. A million and one times thank you!
I'm also making the switch to digital and am tired of getting beaten up in the housing market where I am. THIS vid is one of the few that realistically shows how someone ACTUALLY live with their devices on the road. ⚡️🏆⚡️

A tip for you: If you ever consider upgrading your laptop, choose the highest gpu model (for example choose rtx 3080 instead of rtx 3070) that is because 3080 has more cuda cores which makes it more efficient. For example if both are using 80W of power rtx 3070 gets 13tflops performance while rtx 3080 gets 15tflops!!
Also: 16 hour gaming ONLY at full load which %99 of games dont use, normally when playing a AAA title(like cyberpunk), your gpu will be max and cpu will be at half-ish so you will get more than 16 hours. And if you do light gaming(like warcraft) you will get waay more than 16 hours :D
interesting about the power saving
,i didnt know that. Assumed it would be more powerful the gaming laptop the more power would use.
Wow, your energy setup is so cool. You can get energy both from the Sun and from driving and the system is set up to use any option available. This is awesome.

this is cool, the whole van/rv traveling life style has somewhat intrigued me, and ive always wondered to myself how you could make that work whilst still being able to play games with friends. i basically only play games with friends, so internet connection would be a must, and i mainly play FPS type games somewhat seriously so low latency/ping would be a must. maybe one day ill be able to do something like this

I just wanted to point out, if performance eventually becomes an issue when gaming on your laptop, you could also do a wall mounted mini ITX build or build a built-in pc in your desk if space is your concern but I don’t think that solves power consumption for you haha. Subscribed recently and honestly been inspired by this lifestyle man, good luck on the algorithm broski 🤟🏽
I was thinking the same thing! A build under the desktop in place in the laptop drawer.
The power consumption aspect could be solved by underclocking and undervolting, not completely sure how the performance would compare to a gaming laptop but it's definitely an option
@@Davidx_117 hm I didn’t even think about that

I love when I find hope, it’s beautiful
Thanks for sharing! I really like the wood in your van!
Awesome stuff! Something that might help you with the laptop though is looking into DC-DC charging. Basically, your inverter is never 100% efficient. So you're losing a bit of power there... and then the power brick for the laptop converts back to DC anyway, so you lose more power there. Just rough napkin math you should be able to shave off 10-20% of total power loss compared to your current laptop power draw. Anyway, nice setup! The Mac could modded to work off DC directly, but that's insane with how low the draw is anyway.
Can be hard to find a DC-DC charger for a 230w laptop. Most chargers tap out at about 150w. It really depends as well on if it's needed. I have a Nitro 5 laptop, a vive VR, a fan and internet all running at the same time and it altogether only pulls about 160w~ at max. A DC-DC charger could save a bit of power, but costs enough that it's not really worth it.
@@peytonmac1131 where do you find the DC to DC charger that you can use on a laptop?
@@1Theotherme I'm in Australia and they can be bought from places like Jaycar if one of those exists around you, but I'd imagine Amazon or even a camping store might sell them.
Just make sure you get one that puts out the same voltage as your laptop's current power pack, and equal or more wattage. Wrong voltage will kill the computer, and not enough wattage could set the power pack on fire.
I will honestly would tune in if you'd ever deiced to do any live streams.
i wonder if its possible with his current internet setup. It would actually be a game changer if he could live stream games while in the middle of the woods. He is sure to blow up on twitch because no one else is doing anything like that.
yea I dont think you can get enough bitrate to happen to stream actual good looking gameplay, especially if you are on a kind of limited volume like, he says, is the case with verizon. gotta wait for the fleshed out 5G infrastructure and hardware I suppose.
Love this van, and I love the minimal setup. Can't argue using a gaming laptop as the setup and those reasons why
This whole van is amazing 😮
well now I can live IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!
I personally use visible for my phone plan so I'm excited to see the video where you switch to them for the "Unlimited" data they offer. When it comes to the data I've noticed that rather than throttling at certain bandwidths they throttle based on congestion/area, so as long as you are in a remote location I'd imagine you would indeed get the full "Unlimited". Not to mention they are rather cheap relative to the price you pay with bigger names.
Did he ever actually post that video?
@@jenniferlovell1968 I don’t know I haven’t been keeping up with it but I will go through the video catalogue
@Jennifer Lovell did you find out if he posted that video about the visible hot spot?
I have watched a lot of van life youtubers... you my friend are by far the best!
Man, this van looks so good! I love it!
This is amazing. You really don't see van lifers like you too often who have nice gaming setups.
I myself have a 'gaming setup' in my full time camper. However, it pales not only in comparison to yours but to the expectation of what I eventually want (as far as power is concerned... I'm actually quite happy with my laptop)
Like you, I also have a gaming laptop. However, mine is an Asus Rog Zephyrous. It was the best option for me, being small and relatively light while being powerful enough to run basically any game I wanted while also within a price range I was comfortable with.
And while its draw is much lower than yours (anywhere between 50-150 watts, pending what game I'm playing), my battery and solar setup are lacking. I have a the Ecoflow River Pro and a 100 watt solar panel mounted to the top of my car. I do have a 2nd 100 watt foldable solar panel which I can deploy when I am parked and not moving and that connects into parallel with the other panel. On a good day, my 2 solar panels will be able to make up the power loss by my laptop.
I eventually want to make it 2 100 watt solar panels mounted to the top of my car along with my foldable for a total of 300 watts.
Also former WOW player here. I play ESO now-a-days.
I went WoW to FFXIV (Final Fantasy XIV).

Also, Starlink will add another 100W per hour consumption.

Just found your channel, gotta say I'm really impressed and intrigued! I go on little tid bits for about a week or 2 of checking out the idea of van life. Keep up the great work!!
dude so cool, we have the exact same laptop, your set up is a work of art, masterpiece and your own sanctuary, you should be proud of this. very nice
That was a nice video !! I have same laptop and I strongly recommend you that you improve the ventilation system because it can already get really hot and in your case the airflow in the drawer is a bit constrained.
I think your setup is perfect. A 2070 is plenty for most games you play, and going with a laptop also saves you around 300 watts. For the m1 Mac mini you could’ve got 32gbs, but you shouldn’t see a major difference in performance, mostly just faster when your multitasking or editing?
BRO!! This is insane!! love it!!!
Dude! Awesome Video. Sweet set-up. I love it
Cool setup! I wonder if it would be possible to make it even more efficient by hooking up the laptop directly to the DC system. The laptop power supply (power brick) takes AC power and converts it to DC, so the power is going DC-AC-DC, and some power is lost as heat at each conversion step. So if you could bypass the power brick and use the DC power directly it might be more efficient. You'd also have to make sure it's the right voltage, of course.
It's really not worth the effort and cost though. After your done finding a quality converter that can deliver 240W with a good efficiency, your saving maybe 20-30 Watts for a pretty penny of time and material, whereas you can just add another battery module or solar cell.
@@blakeandrew5058 you can find DC adapters for (nearly) all laptops. My laptop operates that way, bypassing the inverter altogether with a $9 cable. Added bonus: losing the power supply brick present in the AC cord.
I'm due for a mid-life crisis and this is giving me ideas.

With the ridiculous power of gaming laptops nowadays I wholeheartedly agree with your choice. A full-tower setup makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I'd have thought otherwise in the past, but M1 for productivity and the likes of RTX3060m, its honestly insane the price per watt performance we've reached.
Wow man. Great video thanks. Very nice setup. Very impressive.
Stumbled across this video and i love it. Im from the UK and so i have solar panels but never enough sun to really charge anything. I work all aroind the country and i made it a priority to get my gaming rig in my van. But its not just any gaming rig. I have a full racing sim with 2 monitors and vr that i use.
For the vr i also play games like beatsaber within my van. My battery bank tho to play and do other is a total of 935AH in lead acid batteries and i have been like this for 3 years now.
I ocasionally stream from my van with my internet also that i have hooked to the van.

شكلك تفعلها يا سكيلز هههههههه
i think it makes perfect sense that you choosed a gaming laptop for this. living in a van is all about making compromises and maxing out things with the available space. so a gaming laptop is simply the smartest choice for realizing this.
For real that's one the best videos I've ever seen.
For me I think I'd go for a micro tower and tuck it away some where. More customizable and able to keep the components up to date. For power, you'd just have to pick the parts that fit your needs.
If you're worried about upgrading, I honestly think a Framework laptop would make more sense than a tower
