A critical thing that hardly anyone talks about in living in a van, schoolie, or any RV full-time is when it is broke down an it needs major repairing. If it's in a shop for a while, you're essentially homeless. I feel this is a HUGE issue that needs to be talked about an addressed way more than it is. So what then? For me, I tend to van life for the reason of no rent or mortgage, so I don't travel all that much, an when I do, it's not so far from a friend I can couch-surf, but it IS a major factor in determining if you can actually live the life.

I've seen a lot of videos like this and no one has talked about the things you did.
Everyone just says:"Inform yourself and invest in good solar pannels" ect.
And you go with:" go barebone first" and god this needed to be said and I think it will motivate a lot more people since the starting point is so low and it seems very fun to slowly "level up".

I'm an XGen and grandmother and I can tell you that I have lived in and out of numerous lifestyles from destitue to comfortable, from living in a car, tent, gutted trailer, to living in nice homes, etc. I've had plenty of trauma, drama, and even a good amount of comfort and peace. This is a great video on how to prepare for vanlife. It touches on all the important information you need to consider. While I haven't lived in a van fulltime, I have lived in a tiny trailer with essentially nothing to my name. I'm making my choice because of my past experiences and because living in a home isn't affordable for my situation. Great job with keeping the information straight forward and to the point. :)

One good tip for people looking to get into Van or RV life. Rent first! If you have the capability to rent or borrow a van for a weekend trip. It's a great way to test the lifestyle and get a crash course in small living to see if it works for you.
Edit: He mentioned to just go out in your car or SUV as well to test it. That works too! Overlanding is great as well for anyone not looking to do a full conversion van or RV

Right. Good advice. I did a tour from Michigan to Montana and back and lived out of my car and on the way back home I felt like I never wanted it to end. So after a while I ended up selling everything I had, put my nursing career to the side for an undetermined amount of time and have been living out of my custom built van traveling to country for a year now. Never been happier.

I've lived a fairly nomadic type of lifestyle for the last few years now. Mostly due to circumstances, not because of something I chose to do. So living in a van, or RV. Really isn't that big of change for me. It'll definitely give me back the freedom that I've been missing ever since I lost my place a few years ago. A mattress in a van does seem a lot more comfortable than some of the other places that I've slept.

It was for the best, we weren't meant to be, it's been a year and my heart still keeps breaking, I love her too much. My life fell apart when we split, grateful I'm not homeless but I'm just a step away. Like your story, I've just lost all my drive. Great advice, it echo what nearly all full-time vanlifers say about making the move. You didn't touch on this one part, a person should know how they are going to earn a living before they make the change. This is important, it's not a trivial matter. If you must work in a city, you'll want to understand a bit about how vanlife works in a city. It might actually be easier starting in city, instead of hitting the open road. I'm a podcaster (ok, I really earn a living as a computer programmer) and any work I do must be sustainable on the road. For me, Internet connectivity is huge. In Canada, I can find free wifi easily, not so in the States. So then, a strategy should be 'in-place' before you make the jump. I know of some vanlifers that have up to three cell phone plans just to getting the wifi bandwidth they need to work remotely. If you have a huge savings, the whole 'job thing' can certainly wait. Once you are in the van and living the life you'll be able to change and adjust jobs like any other time in your life.

Do what I did. Paper map. Pinpoint your home base. Now draw a circle around it that's one hour out. An hour to get there and then an hour to get back. That's your safety travel zone. You aren't so far away from home that if things go left, you're stuck. But far enough away that you could probably find things to do and see that you didn't know were there.

After watching your video a few nights ago, I committed & purchased a campervan the same night. The bare bones advise really helped as I was looking at builds that were well over 60k and the thought of financing such a large purchase that I'm not super familiar with was daunting. I ended up meeting in the middle between bare bones and what I desired for 18k, it has a bed, 2 100w solar panels, water heater, 25g water, sink. I was fortunate enough to purchase it in full (everything I have essentially LOL), however it'll still end up being less rent than I pay living in the city. I will be flying out to Las Vegas, NV and driving down to Lake Havasu, AZ to pick it up this Friday. My pup Atlas & I are bound for adventure this upcoming year, and you helped solidify that decision. I'm ancitipating I will also upload a few videos as a noobie & just for my memories. This will definitely the most adventurous thing I've done yet.
If there's any other advise for a noobie like me pls lmk! I am coming from TX and the summer gets real hot so I was curious as to what area would be good for me to travel towards around that time & other things I may need as a female solo traveler.

In the summer, I typically try to stay up in elevation. Anything above 6000ft is usually a good safe bet! It still gets warm but not terribly unbearable.
      Good luck out there!

I'm a bit scared ngl but nonetheless extremely excited! I didn't really think too much about how elevation could affect temps but that makes sense. Thanks for the tip!! :)@@TrentTheTraveler

Sorry to hear about your issues. I admire your positive thoughts. We live our days, day after day.. As we age , we have a whole new outlook on life. We think of our past, 0ur memories, and eventually we know that life will, end as we know it. What are my last wishes, dreams, goals.Perhaps to really know who I have become and what have I learnt through my life. What a wonderful thought to have this lifestyle . When we pass, can't take anything with us Wouldn't want someone to worry about what to do with all my belongings What better way than to drive off into the sunset. I love what he is saying. It will be an adventure. A personal journey. Wise words. THANK YOU!

Amazingly. I’m in the same situation. My heart was broken. And I’m still struggling and need to just take and uproot everything. I’ve slept in my car before and honestly it was insane to experience and I actually loved it. I was scared and hyper vigilant as I just couldn’t drive safe and set myself up with a blanket in front of a gas station. Terrified of a cop showing up. I will be trying it again though once weather warms. Yours was the first non-don’t do it vid I saw. And I was genuinely curious of your take. That said. I am curious what you do in regards to learning laws.

I got my 1997 Ford E350 for 1k, so that bit of luck helped me out when it came to buying other things for the van. I personally recommend living in it while you build it, if that's possible, it's amazing how that can change your outlook on where things need to go, since you'll have a much better idea of how it is to move around in that smaller space, and so a better idea of where to put furniture, your fridge, etc.

I think for very extreme way you invest everything you've got
    having a good house-van
Travel around and try to find small work
for maintenance , food , etc along the way
    but for safer version
you should have good steady passive income
already have a house that you can travel back anytime
good amount of emergency money in bank account
and have a house-van as an extra

Great video and great advice! Too many people think they have to have the best of everything before starting and I liked your "barebone first" mentality! We actually got started last year camping in our Kia Sportage to see if we liked it and found out we really enjoyed it.

just thought, instead of sleeping in your car, you could rent a sprinter for like 15-25 a day. buy an air mattress, electric stove and cooler and try the full experience for a week, low cost.

  • @deadpool981
    @deadpool981 2 роки тому

It’s good advice if you’re on your own. I have a cat and dog though and looking to Van life full time with them . It’s a little hard for their sake to to start out with just an air mattress . My main
Thing is making sure I have something that can have good solar and air conditioning while I’m working to keep the animals nice and cool. As well as having the interior a little more pleasant and Inviting for them .
What I’m thinking of doing is getting a used converted van on CL or marketplace for around 30k with an auto loan and then building upon it and upgrading it myself

Thanks for the perfect advice! PS: love your build! That's what I want someday...:)

And so glad you mentioned doing it as cheap as possible at first. When I started thinking about vanlife I thought I had to have the big fancy build and all these things to start out. Then I realized I don't lol. I already had a Dodge Caravan minivan and then I just started getting stuff from like Facebook Marketplace and I went camping for the first time. I loved it! I even did a video on my channel showing my cheap set up lol. Everything you said in this video is 100% spot on, thanks for keeping it real

Right now, I am on the intersection of my life... My parents passed away, my brother lives in UK, and I stayed alone. I got kicked from my last job, I was doing for six years. Now I am thinking what to do. I have no money, due to living in a rented flat, in a country with minimum wages and maximum life expenses. So I gave up first, and go to hostel for poor social people. Moved my stuff and possetions there and start planning a work trip to Germany. And I did it. I left all my stuff in Czech Republic and moved to Germany. Now I made double times more than I did in Czechia, but living here in a rented flat cost me almost half of my salary. Its summer, And I am here for two months allready. I got some debts I need to pay. My plan is to buy a tent, and try live one month in that. Than I use saved money to buy a car roof tent next month. After that, I start saving for a allseason camping Van. And slowly make it to the point, where your are now. ;)

I got heartbroken too, toxic situationship that HAD to end and it's been so tough, been 2 yrs, also had to walk away from a toxic best friend last year...smdh...it's been so hard on me.
One of the things I fear the most for this lifestyle is that being a female, there's way more danger. I know there's others that do it, but still.
Also, I do not know how to fix really anything on a car/vehicle. I have trouble with the simplest of things when it comes to that and I'm just not physically strong, I have arthritic hands so if this vehicle were to break down on me out there in the wild? THAT is the biggest issue. I think if I ever did this, I would stay near a city, even if it's a small town and/or people, other campers...and even tho I understand that's not always guaranteed I'm a pretty smart cookie and think that I could make it work...still scary tho...and I have to figure out some way to make money other than delivery only. I can do that but it's not the greatest income right now...so there's more that has to fall into place for me in order for this to happen...including having a vehicle...i just got in a car accident so I don't even have that right now. :(...waiting on the lawyers.

So I knew I was ready for this lifestyle . Some people may not know when they are going to live full time in a van, bus, or truck camper they need to do a test run in all season because winter is different they summer and fall is different than spring. lol You have fantastic words of wisdom and I look forward to hearing more and binge watching your videos!!! Very good advice! I meet want to be vanlifers and chat with them on the road. Most want to pimp their rides. I been living the vanlife part time for over 30yrs. I/we use 6 yellow top bins and 2 foldable memory foam mattresses as bed and storage. When I travel solo, 6 bins becomes 3. Long story short, KISS to keep the weight to a minimum and you will go further and longer.
