    As a fellow off grid gamer, I could never beat the power usage of a laptop so I went with a G14 Zephyrus with a 3060 and a Ryzen 5900HS. With turbo boost disabled I pull 165 watts (that is measured at the battery bank via a shunt.) You will want to measure consumption that includes the lossy process of the inverter, which I don't think the power monitor you're using can do, that is the final power output. Most likely an additional 30-40 watts is being used to create that power. Enjoy! Beautiful setup!

    • @BLASTIC0
      @BLASTIC0 Рік тому

      So, im not alone here. nice.
      Thats pretty great... thanks for including all of that info. That is pretty low power use @65w. You could save on the power loss by not going through AC power. I have an older HP Pavilion Gaming with a i5 9300h and RTX 1050 3gb. Its time for an upgrade.. but I got a dc barrel jack to USB C adapter so I can plug it right into my ecoflow's USB C port to charge. It normally has a 130w charger, so it is a bit slower, but it keeps up. I'm hoping to be able to do that with whichever new one I get. I really like that G14 Zephrus. Im going to have to get the $1000 ish one with the slower CPU, but I want at least a 3060.

    • @mrpopo573
      @mrpopo573 Рік тому +1

      @@BLASTIC0 apologies, it wouldn't let me edit but my usage while gaming with a 3060 is 165 watts of usage. There is not yet an over the counter 12v option for this laptop but it could be built if you had the bench and buck converter of choice to hit the target voltage. I have 400ah of lithium and the inverter loss is sustainable, we replenish with 1200 watts of roof top solar pretty quickly. Happy gaming!

    First off, congrats on making it happen. See you're dippin' into SFF territory here but still using conventional parts, I thought I bring up an option where you can basically use a MAXIMUM of 140w within a build that's below 4 instead of 18L without loosing too much performance.
    You can get an Intel 12400T (a 35w version of the best gaming cpu right now, mosty used in laptops, but even a regular 12400F is fine) on an ITX motherboard, with an RTX A2000 gpu that's performance is somewher at the 3060 level, but only consumes 70w at MAX. Which is crazy efficient. Slap in a HDPLEX passive 250w GaN power supply that's fanless and you have a powerful system that's easy to cool, barely consumes anything and have the size of like two books on top of each other. Depending on the case, but there are Densium 4, Velka 3, Skyreach 4 Tiny for example that are all 4L or below and are perfectly fine to house these components.

    Quick scan of the comments didn't show anybody pointing out that those Kill-A-Watt devices only show AC draw and not DC draw, which will 100% be higher due to voltage differences. I forget how to calculate it, and obviously power is a very complicated subject, but for anybody reading this, please know it's not a 1-1 comparison, and the run time will be less than he estimated, maybe by a lot.
    Edit: then of course there's inverter loss, wiring loss, etc...

  • @DCArobfather
    @DCArobfather 2 роки тому +1

    Slight math error, ac and dc are different, 250watts at 120v is 2.083 amps(ac) covert it to dc 23 amps at 12v = 275watts so 13.5 hrs which is not much but when you run a 1000watt pc on ac it’s it’s 1104 an extra 104w of the battery

      Yeah, he wasn't stress testing his PC or anything. I would imagine he normally has it idling or plays a game that's not too demanding with the graphics not cranked all the way.
      I think he works editing for movies, and obviously he edits his videos. It's possible those activities could pull more watts, but with his setup and style I don't think knowing precisely how much power it pulls in every situation is important.
      He does seem to know a little bit about gaming pcs, but I think the micro center guy mainly built it. I wouldn't consider his NR200 case go be small for an ITX anyway. My wife runs a Velka 3 in a 3.9 liter case (I built the PC for her). It's got an 3700x CPU and a 1060 TI GPU.
      I've also got an mATX mobo in a computer case smaller than his NR200 17.9 vs 18 liters.

      If some electric engineer would design a PCB that you can order from a PCB service I'd give it a shot and soldering it myself though.
      There are ATX power supplies that take 36-72v DC input but they are expensive, like 200€ to 300€.
      Only explanation I have why it would be so expensive is that it's a tiny market.

    Computers run off 12vdc, maybe you can just wire that 12vdc straight into the computer, power supplies range in wattage off the shelf. So maybe you can limit the wattage to like 700watts like a typical gaming psu. And you could probably even find a monitor that runs off 12vdc as well saving you some more energy instead of going through the inverter process. That would be really efficient.

      You would never want to do that with solar in the electrical loop. The wave form of solar is dirty. The power supply of the gaming computer would not last as long as it should and might damage your computer when if fails prematurely. Even neighborhoods with solar have this problem. Normally the grid cleans the waveform, but it too expensive to do in every localized neighborhood.

  • @ertagon

    Undervolting would decrese the wattage even further.
    With undervolting a GPU there is arguably no performance drop (it's very minimal) and can decrease the power consumption by as much as 10% (on the GPU).
    With undervolting a CPU once again there isn't really any performance drop but it wouldn't yield as much of a result, still noticeable but less so.

    On a snow day, I suggest you play an old school gaming system or handheld. Ps2 slim can go 7-48 watts.

    depending on what games you play you could use much less watts actually, with certain mini PCs.

    I’m the same as you, and love gaming off the grid. I was using an Xbox One S, as the max power wattage was 54w, and I had a 1080p monitor from Lenovo that was 18w. Series S is even more so power efficient at peak efficient at 48w, so was around 66w max for gaming. I know it’s cool to have huge power, but Xbox is a good solution for power with less amp hours 😊

    • @JudeTheYoutubePoopersubscribe
      @JudeTheYoutubePoopersubscribe 2 роки тому

      the series s is about 70-80w in a demanding game like cyberpunk. in older xbox one games like witcher 3 where it was not pushing the xbox at all it was only using about 60w.

    Well a 12 Kilowatts of battery reserve and a 3 Kilowatts solar panel with an inverter for the pc only with proper maintenance it works fine.
    12 Kilowatt x 0.9 ( For LiFePo4 discharge ) x 0.8 Inverter Efficiency divided by Appliance max wattage (400 Watts for Gaming PC).
    400 watts gaming pc works for 21.6 hours. Nothing to worry about blackouts especially on Typhoon Affected areas. It takes millions of years before the sun will e extinguished rather than an efficient generator uses fossil fuel.

    cool , was thinking go off the grid , my complite rig , pfsence , file server editing rig , audio amp , comsume 500-600 wat at 220v , so is in theory posible ,

    Question: some people spend 24/7 on their pc or they game for days on end when they have a few days off work late into the night- with what you have now do you think that it is possible for someone to game all night and into the next day and still have enough power for every day things?

    i'm not sure if you're actually aware but if you do happen to play games that run way easier, capping your fps can reduce the amount of power your GPU sucks. so essentially you can make it a bit more efficient

  • @ZaneofAustin
    @ZaneofAustin 2 роки тому

    so there are a couple notes for people that want even more efficiency*
    5950x i believe i still the elephant in the room, when you can get a 5800x that is just as good for gaming, for even less power wattage (excluding undervolting), so for watt-efficiency to gaming performance, the 5800x is still the winner, but you know grats on the 5950x it's great for other things :) like mining
    a 3070 is a good choice for being a high performance video card, but it's actually one of the weaker ones with wattage to performance, if you want the true top dog, it's probably the 3060, mine can run hunt showdown (more or less the same intensity as halo, probably even worse cause optimizations for AAA) @ 110 watts from the wall (with undervolting) and it still gets 100+ fps
    so you could probably shear off a good 15-20% with proper undervolting, but if you were just looking for pure watt efficiency, a 5800x would be king (you could go lower if you're willing to sacrifice performance)
    everything else about the build looks great though, i love the aesthetic rgb, a 3070 is a fantastic card regardless, psu is sized properly (resting around 50% utilization under full load)
    great work :)
