  • This performance is from the deLay Band's 1996 performance at Portland's Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival. This song epitomizes how this innovative band stretched the "blues band" envelope--and had a lot of fun doing it! Produced by Kathy Rankin through the facilities of Multnomah Community TV. Kudos to Kathy for documenting so many great Waterfront Blues Festival moments!

    Paul was THE man on harp for my money. His phrasing his tone and his astonishing creativity (never seemed to play the same thing twice)put him up among the greatest soloists I ever heard. Of course a man with such powerful gifts attracted some of the best players around and this performance illustrates that very nicely. Really great stuff.

    I just listened again. In the middle of the harp solo, tears started running down my face. I miss him so much, and only met him three times. Long Beach Thanksgiving show, San Juan Capistrano opened for Charlie Musselwhite, and the SPAH convention where I iffered to be his wingman and got to hang with him for a couple of days. Lots of Paul on You tube.

    Oh, man. Serious, semi-pro harp player and singer here who studied Paul's singing and play, and copped them both on occassion. One of my bands did a solid verison of Ocean of Tears. Paul's passing is an irreplacable loss. I discovered your band as I was in need of some blues healing and feeling, and I'm misty watching this. Louis, you and the rest of the band were ROCK SOLID behind the great DeLay, deep pockets and groove always. I saw you live in 1994 or '95 when you played in Philly. Thank you for the wonderful music and the emotions you evoked.

      Alan--Thanks for the note. I'm glad you enjoyed this video. And it's cool that you saw us in Philly that time. We came thru there because our record label (Evidence) was located in a Philadelphia suburb and the label owners wanted to see us in person. Anyway: it's nice to hear from you and to know you've enjoyed our music over the years. We surviving band members are proud of the deLay recordings we made and think the band was a bit ahead of its time.

    you are right mate - they pushed the term "blues band" to the limit. almost nothing delay plays sounds like the licks played by the original blues harmonicists and yet he still seems to fit perfectly in the blues idiom. a true innovator.

    The best. I remember when Paul went to prison on a drug thing. He found enough musicians to start a band. All of the toilets said American Standard on them. That became the name of the band. RIP Paul.

      Yup, I played golf with his bass player who said Paul was in the clink about 1990. I was a real hacker then, had just double bogeyed the 2nd hole at Gresham golf course when I came upon a three-some at the 3rd hole. They insisted I tee off first, a par three of only 89 yards. My wedge found the hole. What a way to meet. I double bogeyed the 4th hole but we played golf together through the summer. Great guy, he always thought I was a good golfer.

    Is he using some kind of pedal on his harmnica? I know its a chromatic but it seems different than that.

    • @tracyturner-pain6754
      @tracyturner-pain6754 Рік тому +1

      Paul had a custom made road case with several pedals hooked together. I don't know which effect or effects he used in this performance. Maybe one of his harmonic playing fans would have that info for you? But yes: the sound of his chromatic is being altered here. With the song's theme of "Nice & Strong," he was going for a huge sound.
