The lesson is easier said than done, but knowledge allows knowing what to work on concerning how to track down an in-coming ball and measure the swing spacing from it so the "dance steps" end on the best foot to maximize recovery.

I'd love to see an approach to teaching this. It's something that I work on with my high school players mostly off court on rainy days. The drill is basically pretending to run after a wide shot, "hitting" the open stance shot, pushing off the outside foot, doing a crossover step, and then shuffling back. We do footwork pattern drills with shadow swings in slow motion initially, and the better they are, the more we include it in our conditioning drills to help emphasize the pattern so it becomes and instinct. I haven't done much with it on court though, as I find it too hard to teach when combined with anything else (at least initially).

How to please. Also, is there really an open stance option for us using a one handed backhand? Squaring up on the follow through seams like the only way. One of the advantages of a two handed one.

I'm interested to see what Ian's answer is, but mine is that only in rare cases would you hit an open one hander, and it would be more of a block/defensive shot. In most cases, the preferred option for a one hander on the run is what you see from Federer - a completely closed stance, but allowing the back leg to swing through, so that after the shot, it's essentially an open stance and the left foot can push off. This is also how I hit my slice to recover fast. You can see it if you watch a compilation of Federer backhands ua-cam.com/video/6o_ximmbG5A/v-deo.html

Yes. You may need to hit open-stance one-handed backhands on the run, moving back, defensive situations, on returns, and shots directly to the body. I think it's a big myth that 1HBH players must always hit it in a closed-stance position. You need an open-stance one-handed backhand - ua-cam.com/video/eXtYipLbsUs/v-deo.html
