Just had an epiphany about staying low - it lowers your center of gravity as you meet the ball. If you use the kinetic chain correctly from a lower center of gravity, it just amplifies everything because driving that center of gravity up and forwards is all free power that has very little to do with the swing technique.
@@ihabelalami3710I think what they mean is because you are low, you can use that “jumping power” from your hips and legs to give the racket even more speed. You start low and you end up high.
@@Emolga6274 splitstep helps you to spread you legs.and pros like Nadal and Djokovic dont stay so close to baseline. almost every pro goes 1 or 2 steps back after he hits the ball.nobody stay on the line.
What exactly are proper tennis coaches going to learn from this? Patrick Mouratoglou knows nothing - what are his tennis qualifications - he doesn't have any.
Can you make a video that discusses the difference in technique recommended for L vs R eye dominance? For example, I’m R eye dominant and play R handed, and I’d like to know the implications of this for my technique (particularly FH). I’ve seen you do this test a few times now, but only on a RH player who is L eye dominant. Thanks!
Basically the whole issue with the dominant eye is that if at some point during the trajectory of the ball towards you the dominant eye loses vision of the ball (due to blocking of the dominant eye by the nose) and the non-dominant eye takes over the tracking then when this 'switch' happens for the perceived position of the ball and causes mishits (due to your brain thinking the ball is in a different position than it actually is). --> if you do the test which Mouratoglou shows and alternate closing the left and right eye you will understand what i mean by the switch of the perceived position of the ball. So basically then the whole goal is to make sure your dominant eye tracks the entirety of the ball flight towards you so you never get this perceived position switch of the ball. You can actually benefit from this knowledge when receiving, position yourself in such a way that your dominant eye will be able to track the ball the entirety of the time (e.g. in RR people receive the serve on the deuce side from an open stance when aiming to hit a forehand). ==================== To make it more practical if you are right hand dominant and right eye (RR) then: - your forehand will most likely be an open stance forehand (djokovic is RR for example and seems to be staring in front of him but he can actually see the ball in the corner of his dominant right eye in that position, same goes for Murray) - your backhand will most likely be a closed stance since this is the position in which you can look 'on top' of the ball, if you would hit an open stance backhand it is likely your nose will be blocking the view of the contact point. ====================== If you are cross dominant (e.g. right handed but left eyed or vice versa) and have a double handed backhand then it could be wise to hit the double handed backhand out of open stance (since your dominant eye is towards 'the back' and vision from it might be blocked by your nose). Or you could hit your backhand one handedly then your hitting zone will be more in front and obstruction of view from the nose is less likely as well, which also mitigates the problem (a la Federer). Lastly a test you can do is that you position yourself in the stance in which you hit your forehand and backhand (right at the point you would make contact with the ball in your preferred stance) and then you alternate closing your dominant and non-dominant eye. This way you can check whether you are still seeing the ball/contact point in that stance. If your dominant eye does not have vision of it anymore it might be wise to change your stance in such a way that you do. This will lead to less misshits and a better contact point. Last note: i think ultimately watching the ball onto your strings with both eyes is best since you need both eyes to be able to assess depth/position in the best way possible. Although i feel you need to have trained this from your childhood onwards, otherwise it will be a big change and is very hard to learn later on (since your entire life you have learned your strokes by doing it the way you found natural yourself). Sorry for the wall of text :D hope it helps!
Watching this video, I am blown away! This girl’s playing style, strokes, footwork, strengths and weaknesses, the way she takes the racquet back and the way she moves on the court, are identical to that of my 13yr old daughter’s. After watching this, I quickly “tested” her eye dominance; turns out, she is also left eye dominant (like me) all while being right handed. Weird and very interesting all at the same time. Coach Patrick is awesome as always, would love to visit him sometimes for privates. (Any idea how I can get in touch with him?)
Normally for left eye dominant players, you advise to have an open stance and lean on left leg when hitting backhands in order to get ready early and see the ball clearly. However, I think this time you didn't advise this because her backhand seems consistent.
Okay, this tennis backhand tutorial is great and all, but I tried it and ended up hitting the ball into a different zip code! Time to call NASA, I'm serving for space exploration now! 🚀🎾 😄
Patrick. Thanks for the video. Do you need to stay low for movement and stand tall when you are about to hit the stroke ?. This was a suggestion from a coach & we are confused.
Probably the best tip you can give to a young athlete. Forget the technique and all the tactics etc... The intensity that you put into your game and practice, is what makes you win. Rafael Nadal is the best example of this.
The stay low throughout the swing is quite controversial. If you look at Zverev or Nadal, you’ll see they load then explode by feet pushing off ground and their head are “above the roof”.
What’s that thing he does to test whether your are left or right eyed? I need to learn to do it so I can figure out what I need to work on. I’m a one handed backhander, and my backhand is always my better shot/most consistent. Does this mean I’m right eyed??
so basically you look at something with a distance through a hole made with your 2 hands and you block one eye at a time but the eye you block and the image doesn't change the one that's looking at the object is your dominant eye. I think
Or you can do the same thing - hold your hands in a diamond/triangle shape like they did and look at something in the distance. But instead of having someone cover each eye, just bring the diamond back towards your face slowly. It will naturally come back more centered towards your dominant eye. Or if you do like they did and just close one eye and then the other. It will be pretty obvious which one is your dominant eye.
Don’t let the that determine or derail your progress. It’s basically useless. If one’s not the same as Nadal and Federer, should that person quit tennis?
Basically when you turn sideways, whichever eye is in front will be the side you can keep eye contact on the ball longer without losing it. I'm a rightie who is left eye dominant. So when I turn sideways for my forehand my dominant eye is in the front so I don't lose track of the ball.
It has nothing to do with your dominant eye. Try this. Go out and try to hit a ball with your left eye closed and then your right eye closed. This is utter nonsense.
What stance for one handed backhand? I mean ohb obviously do close stance, But how about the head, the left eyes dominance if i do close stance to help me see the court and the contact at the same time?
I'm curious, you decided to work on the players footwork after you had her rallying through the center of the court... We never saw her actual movements because she was never challenged. So why work on this stuff? 30% of the video is about eye dominance... which could be argued has nothing to do with footwork and positioning.

I really do not understand how a left eye dominant should have a better forehand. I am a left eye and if i had to shoot with a bow i need the arrow to be on my left side in the same virtual path of my eye. In tennis the arrow is the ball and the bow is the racquet and thats is a backhand. My backhand is 10 times better than my forehand: i can visualize the exact point of contact and trajectory since the ball will be on me left side. Problems occurs in the forehand where "arrow" and "bow" are both on the right side. The swing path starts away from my dominant eye so i have not a clear point on contact nor a precise visual trajectory.
It is not about the dominant eye alone, but if your dominant hand is the same or crossed . If you are left eyed and left handed that it is the same as a right eyed right handed
