  • Check out my new book that you can pre-order now. Simplify Vegetable Gardening will be available on 16th Feb 2024. Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/SimplifyVegGardening It is time to put the chillis into their final home, That is an indoor hydroponic system called the Autopot XL this is an indoor hydroponic system that does not need power or taps in order to work. It is gravity fed so can be used anywhere.
Shaun has a huge advantage as he managed to get his chilli plant growing very quickly, and he too is using an indoor Hydroponic system, He decided on the ebb and flow system.
So we both decided to use hydroponics to grow our chilli plant for the chilli challenge, but are both using totally different methods in our hydroponic garden.
Autopots are available in the UK. and autopot USA is also available. Hydroponics has become very popular over the last few years and hydroponic plants grow much bigger and faster because of the hydroponic advantages of being able to control the feed and constantly providing it when the plant requires it.
So check out this video where I not only show you the autopot setup but will give an autopot review based on how to grow chilli plants in an autopot system.

I've been using a autopot system for a couple of years and it makes things grow much faster. And if i go on holiday i know they will still get water. I use it outdoors and grow chilies, tomatoes, garlic, lettuce, beetroot, mint and radishes with it. I used it last year with potatoes but they grew so large that the pot was close to splitting.

First year growing chillies, I managed to germinate 4 Mozambique finger chilli and only 1 Kenyan cover chilli, all in my tiny greenhouse, it took 3 weeks to germinate these from seeds collected from shop bought fresh chillies, I'm happy with them so far, but, my one Kenyan chilli is price of the bunch. Great video to boot!

My earlist, probably only trial of Hydroponics was in 1976 to grow some Kidney Beans in Pots. The method I chose was a sort of Floo and Drain system using vermiculite as the pseudo soil. What this required was to lift a bucket (big) up to waist high where it would flood the pots, wait an hour or so then lower it again below the level of the plants so that it could drain away. I have no idea where I got the details from, probably the library.
Everything was set up and working when I had to go to another plant for about 3 months and my wife was not able to lift the big bucket, but how she tried so she was lumbered with manual "watering" but the science passed her by and 1976 was a scorcher of a summer and my plants expired.
I am planning another go next year, it's a bit late for this and the kit available now is tremendous and not expensive. It's the science which facinates me. It would have been better if I had been a good gardener. :-)

We had a few problems with our chilies this year, mice ate one lot and the next got frosted.
I have used Auto pot for years a while ago, the hard part is make sure they are level and the valve closes right off tight and does not get blocked, use a filter on the supply line.

I really struggled to get my rainbow chillis to germinate and like you it took 6 to 8 weeks and the seedlings were weak, they were germinated in my greenhouse in a propagator....In the end I managed to get just 3 plants to the re potting size which is a job for tomorrow... It's the only thing that has struggled this year so far....Will be interesting to see how they turn out. Great vid as usual Tony and good luck in the challenge...

Hi Tony, just a comment about the auto pot system and growing medium, I have been using this system for about 5 years now, I also have a home made hydroponic 70 pot system outdoors that we grow just strawberries in now, I use the same nutrient in both systems so the fruit we grow in both should be good. and as said b4 I have been veg gardening for about 50 years, however I found the tomatoes and cucumbers grown in coir in the auto pots over these years have left a far bit to be desired, where the straws in the same nutrient are great. So it was recommended I go back to a good quality compost and carry on as normal in the auto pots by a hydroponic specialist. This I have done but also have put one tomato and one cucumber in coir as a test. You would not believe the difference I will never grow in coir again, the compost grown plants are way ahead and we have been picking toms now for a week, the coir tomato looks poor in comparison as does the cucumber to its rivals. Just a thought to assist you. Regards C

Greetings from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Good work! I find that soaking chili seeds 24 hours and coating the ones the ones that sink to the bottom of the container with powdered cinnamon slows or prevents the fungal issues that prevent many seeds from germinating.

Nice one Tony. I was looking at the AutoPot for next year. I have always used drip feed hydro.
Are you going to flush the pots occasionally to remove excess nutrients and balance the EC value? (What I mean is, if the chilli takes a small bit of N every time but the correct P & K then the pots will become nitrogen bound as more nutrient is added and you may get a green growth burst)
The other way to do it is to gradually change the nutrient solution as the season progresses.
    Steve

I've been trying lazy hydro with perlite.....where you treat perlite like soil, water it with hydro feed, and make sure the pots are in saucers to act as a reservoir.
    Tomatoes LOVE it
    Strawberries love it.
But peppers and chillies just seem to survive, never thrive.

@@simplifygardeningFrom what I'm getting it wicks perfect most good potting mixes can wick up to 300,mm with perlite added and 25% ratio. With potato the roots are in the bottom of the pits the tubers are up higher the with the round auto pot a 20 litre bucket with three bottom cut out sits on top perfectly Here in Australia with our warmer temperatures wicking works fantastically the warmer it is the better the wicking like our coldest days are around 15c. I finally got to speak to the fellow who I saw do it first. He's the only bloke I know of o successfully grow potatoes in Hydroponics and get a decent yield without half of the spuds being green, wicking only ever need to be as high at the root zone Most of our pots here are round. If you get a chance have look at Autopot Australia. to see the rage that we have available not all is showing on the web site unfortunately
      www.gardensmartshop.com/Autopot_s/1907.htm
plus tis is more of their experiment and R&D
the designer is a guy called Jim Fah and live in Malborne Australia these video give an idea how far they push the autopots
I was stoked to see you using them way over in the UK. I got bored with watch autopot videos with Asian subtitles mainly because Jim is of Asian decent and pushes he is Southeast Asia. but you do get to see the possibilities amongst the subtitles.

its the worst year ever, usually get at least 30-40 plants minimum, which i then give away what i dont need. I usually do 1 or 2 trays, but ended up doing 3rd+ which gave me 8 of the 15. I use my own seed stock from last year. Keep them on a sunny warm window sill south facing.

The comment in relation to ebb and flow isn’t quite right imho… yes the plants will take what they need with auto pots but you can find they selectively take up nutrients leaving the water increasingly higher in certain nutrients and pH over time, that’s why retesting EC and pH periodically is advised.

It isnt cheap to start, but once you have the main stuff the pots are cheap enough to add on
