Tony Blair on how Britain will be 'left behind' unless it embraces AI revolution | Today Programme
We are BBC Sounds. The home of binge-worthy podcasts, music curated by music lovers and live radio.
As someone living through the effects of his previous revolution, I think I’ll give him a wide berth
You can give him a wide birth (which is sort of irrelevant) but you can't do the same to AI. It is hear to stay and will affect everyone's lives.
Why does anybody give Lionel Blair airtime? More red wine on his plate than Fred West and Harold Shipman.
We have the imagination. We do the start ups but we sell them off to foreign companies. The government needs to change the law to prevent foreign ownership like other countries do.
He obviously knows more about AI than the tech experts. Half the people working on creating AI are saying we need to slow down and take pause
He'll have some financial interest in it, he's like a window salesman who won't leave til you accept what he's pushing.
I work in AI. Worlds about to be a very different place.
Unfortunately if you slow down you will be left behind I can guarantee Chine (etc) will not pause. What needs to happen in parallel is that governments need to look at what needs to be done to control the use of AI - as they are doing.
@@just-a-yt-guy they will use ai to control.
@@just-a-yt-guy are govs really?
Keeps pushing digital ID. He's always pushing an agenda.
He reminds me very much of one of the villains in C.S. Lewis's much underrated sci-fi novel That Hideous Strength. Something about that paradoxical bloodless zeal about him. Frightening stuff.
How is this criminal not banned from discource about society. He should be in a cold dark cell.
Well mainly because he's not a criminal
By that logic, you need to add Cameron for Libya
@blazzz13 happy to do so. You will find no love for Cameron from me
@user-mw9bd2ey6s In an honest world, he would be charged with war crimes.
Criminal? For helping remove a horrific dictator who was using chemical weapons on his own people?
Blair having faith in AI? yeah since it's more dangerous than nukes.
I heard Blairs interview, heard his solutions. But while he was droning on I had the impression that they all sounded too easy, just salesman's BS. I think that's how he got into power.
He's still in power. You think you voted for starmer lol?
@@mrwu2 All I know is that people didn't vote for the Tony Blair Institute..
@@RollaArtis well they did because they were duped. The election was rigged with the process starting to ensure a labour victory with the 'right man for the job' in 2019
@@mrwu2Listen to yourself - childish conspiracy theories…..
@@neilrobson3064 You are blind to the truth. Must have voted for him haha. You think Starmer's path to downing Street was the result of normal and fair democratic procedure? Haha
.. google his son... heavily invoved in AI...See you next tuesday
War criminal
Traitor!
Blair ought to stop yelling from the sidelines, its distracting and unhelpful. He could give advice to the current government when they ask for it, but otherwise he should probably find a hobby and stop acting as though he's still in power.
Same could very much be said of Cameron - in fact, to a much greater extent, given his economic vandalism.
Sidelines,he's in the driving seat.
@@sacredgongs only if your a crazy conspiracy nut
@@KS777-h1wok prick
@@KS777-h1w ok Tony
@KS777-h1w at this point it's just theory's as conspiracy turn out to be right far too often especially where Tony is involved
Where's he planning to invade with these AI robots then.
Is it just me or does it sound like Tony Blair is running the country ??
His tendrils run deep into the State via his Institute of Global Change
Of course he is. He is texting Starmer every day apparently and high up on his agenda was ID cards.
He is.
Probably has shares in the AI industry 🙄
I think it's more sinister than that but yeah, he'll be making money off it.
AI will just put more people out of work.
It’s inventible. Automation and AI technology will advance if we like it or not, if not us the advances will come from China, the US or the EU.
These advancing technologies could put us closer to being a more productive nation, with that a universal basic income will eventually be necessary.
Which is why it is foolish to allow so many people to join our ranks.
@@NorthSon Totally agree.
To those who commented about blair, would you have watched if it was someone else?
His message is still on point. It is stupid that some people reject his message outright just because it is someone they don;t like giving it.
Never watched you clown just commented on his character as he has previous.
@@just-a-yt-guy What message has he given. Britain is not a superpower, it doesnt need top universities it needs a functioning government that looks after its own people. Why care about top university when you import millions of under educated people in late adulthood. AI is gonna be down on the list !
And yes i would of watched it for the comic effect
Trust the statebroadcaster@BBC to give this creature airtime. Blair must be so proud of his record hey ? The absolute state of the UK thanks to his open door policy and all the atrocities that have come with it. Surprised he shows his face in public.
the problem with revolutions, and more so with revolutions on top of revolutions, is that victims fall by the way side. the crucial question: what does this mean for employment? will more and more people be out of work because AI has taken over? how many human jobs will be lost? where will people who lost their jobs go? what is in the "revolution on top of the revolution" for them? or will this mean the hardening of the divide between those who control AI and those who do not? Blair is not totally being transparent here...
And why is he so in favour of massive unskilled immigration to a country that doesn’t have job opportunities to offer them, outside of care home work that people lie about being willing to do to get a visa to come and chasing wildly oversubscribed gig economy work like Deliveroo rider, and is going to lose do many jobs to AI and automation in the coming years?
There’s literally no way to justify it.
Future jobs will be highly skilled roles programming and coding future generations of AI software and improving automation hardware
A big problem with AI doing a civil servant's job would be that an AI can't whistle-blow if things aren't right - AI seems to appeal to top-down managers seeking total control, which is perhaps a cause for concern (only opinion, not an expert)
AI will be absolutely be able to do a policing/whistle blowing role if that is what it is asked to do. No reason at all why it could not.
@@just-a-yt-guy Thank you for replying. I see your point. The thing is though that "if that is what it is asked to do" is exactly the difference: humans know how to be awkward, and do things they're _not_ asked to do, which can be annoying for managers but can also challenge bad practice. Best wishes.
How much do big tech companies give to the Tony Blair Institute?
That does not change the fact he is absolutely right. Countries that are not leading in the AI tech revolution will be left behind, and consequently become poorer and thereby provide poorer services to its citizens.
@@just-a-yt-guy garbage. It’s just more big tech dream time.
@@nickjourno and it was people with views like yours, that when early computers came out in the 1970's and 80's, that they were just toys or a fad etc etc and were only good for typing a letter. Now they are in every part of our lives, and if they are not in yours it is only because you are either in a 3rd would country, or you are a luddite.
AI is more dangerous than nukes... & Blair is happy
@@HSstudio.Ytchnnl Blair is not a nice person.
You leave things another 10 or 20 years until the solution is so blindingly obvious and cheaply commodities off the shelf just like batteries, PCs etc 😅
Interesting he talks about DWP and getting AI much more heavily involved to make the service better. I think at this point it’s time to abolish all in person appointments and get rid of job centres for that purpose. Many of the existing buildings could be emptied of office desks and made into small community hubs where job seekers are invited regularly to meet local employers and see some of the latest vacancies. People would still have to engage with the system via their online portals and either take part in live chat appointments or telephone/videos but overall the system could be moved towards compassion and genuine support rather than intimidation and fear. I understand there are people in DWP who genuinely nice and want the best for job seekers but unfortunately there are plenty who are not like that, and invariably those nastier elements are pulling the strings on decision making in that government department. Hopefully Mel Strides departure will allow for a proper rebuilding of the culture of that place which for a long while now have been toxic and hostile towards very vulnerable people.
Imagine conducting an interview where it’s claimed that 40% of the tasks done by people could be done without people, and not asking how society manages that impact to jobs and the great mini in the workforce who aren’t going to become engineering wizards. Ah wait, I just watched one! Typical London bubble - okay I know the BBC studios aren’t in London these days but the thinking still is.
Labour / the left is a big proponent of mass migration of low skilled and unskilled people into the West, who often have little or no language skills for their destination country. What exactly does he expect these people to do in a high tech future where AI and automation keeps on wiping out jobs? Pay them all Universal Basic Income, because there isn’t enough productive work for low skilled people to do?
This man should not be getting air time. Secondly he harps on about 'technology' like my grandad, God rest his soul, used to talk about the 'interweb'. Retire to the garden Tony.
You mean retire to prison where a war criminal belongs.
Well, Britain is already behind…😢
3rd in the world in terms of AI advancements. We could be a big player in this emerging field and profit from it. It will advance regardless if we like it or not. We could get ahead and benefit from this.
So let's just stay behind shall we? And lick our wounds.
I wonder what investments he has in AI and Digital ID's
Probably a lot. It’s a smart thing to invest in, it’s an emerging technology that’s going to bring in large amounts of money. I’ve made money from investing in AI. You should look into it too.
this dude actually did it. He came back to power in Britain.

There is no way this man actually fully understands "ai". For one he is throwing it around like the buzzword it is. But secondly, he's a lawyer/politician, not a tech expert. He does not understand this subject at all as much as he thinks he does, I am sure of that.
Aerospace engineer here - you have summed that up perfectly.
AI is the most overhyped technology I have ever seen. Its like every couple of years there's a new hype product and the less understood it is then the higher the level of hype. Basically the more you see people hying something the less you should want to have anything to do with it. Look at what happened with crypto & FTX.
There's a giveaway into these sorts of people making these claims. They keep of saying _"we COULD do"_ They rarely say _"here look at what this CAN DO."_ In other words its all conjecture if what they propose will work.
@@tonywilson4713Beautifully said. Thank-you!
@@tonywilson4713lol. As an engineer you should know better. The possibilities of artificial intelligence are limitless. Why are the magnificent 7 companies pouring billions of $ into the development of it? It’s not because it’s overhyped. Software that can automatically learn and do the braindead tasks (bookkeeping, filling in spreadsheets, planning your diary) to free up productivity hours. It will assist with speeding up medical research which is critical with diseases. It’s going to be used in education, travel, engineering of all types, the possibilities are insane. From your comment, it appears that you are just as green about Ai as Mr Blair. I’m somewhat in the Ai industry as an engineer, and I can tell you it’s going to change the world over the next few decades to come.
@@odysseussiren4274 Thanks - Look at the other reply I got from the Kool Aid drinker.
And I do recommend Adam Conover's interview with Ed Zitron.
I am actually playing it through again as I type this.
He actually strips down the whole system and lays it out bare.
@@twyscape So all these 'advances' should just happen without due governance? Splitting the atom gave us cheap energy while at the same time could destroy the entire planet. How will AI manage permanent mass unemployment?A logical AI solution would be to greatly reduce the global population. What do human beings then become? Expendable?
Riding on someone else’s coat tails. This is not the time to up your profile.
The UK today is a Nation up to it’s neck in DEBT, public as well as private.
The only solution is printing more money and paper IOUs which will affect the value of Sterling.
The result as we are witnessing today is….
INFLATION.
I agree with him, but the question is, how how should ai be embraced and applied
The keyword is future. Investing is all about the future. Where are things going, where should things go? Get your money there and leave it.

Thanks Tony, but I'll stick to genuine intelligence.
I feel sorry for Tony for when judgment day comes from God. He's in deep trouble.

Also great at TAX avoidance.
Also great at money making money from money and from nothing else.

Blaire is so full of hypocricy its almost unbelievable. But hes there, so I believe it. Everything he says, he does the opposite. What did he says before, during and after being PM? Small government, free markets. What did we get? Big government, more rules and constitutional reform. What does he say about AI? Increase productivity and make public sector jobs more efficient? Can anyone seriously imagine, in any universe, Blair cutting public sector jobs to replace them with AI. The man swaggers around pontificating for hours about all his great ideas. But when it comes down to the real business of doing the work he does the opposite or nothing.
