Don't feel too bad about your memory - the divergence from the first series starts with Opening 2 (the exact episode the opening is used in, too, so you'll know you're on to new stuff once the opening changes), so anything after that is the proverbial wild west. Also! Elric, is the name.
It's quite complicated with FMA. Although FMAB follows the manga, the creators relied on the fact that those who watch FMAB have already seen FMA. So the creators of FMAB didn't animate some things that were already animated in FMA, they relied on the fact that people would know them from FMA. So if someone watches FMAB before FMA it can get quite confusing sometimes.
@@BenBenReacts Yeah. Basically, any parts that were before the divide in timeline between the two shows was rushed in Brotherhood, then brotherhood paced things far better after that dividing point as it followed the manga better.
The best way to think of FMA and FMAB and the major differences: The 'original' FMA deviated from the manga and effectively padded out the rest of their story with 'filler arc' after episode 25. FMAB uses the first series to pretty much summarise that within the first 12 episodes by excluding some of the unimportant story beats and then after the 'event' where FMA deviated they instead follow the manga pretty much page by page until the story is complete.
I think Brotherhood is way better, personally. The original gets so messy towards the end, imo. Like, it does a lot of cool stuff with alternate takes on where certain characters were going, but... well, that's the stuff I remembered, and I ended up looking into the stuff I forgot and, uh, yeah, I forgot it with good reason. I don't want to say what the things I didn't like were specifically, because it's all spoilery and I don't want to ruin the experience (even if I didn't like it myself). All I'll say is - I remember the stuff with the hommunculi, and the ending. As in, that was the good stuff. Last thing - I have a friend who swears by the movies, which were sequels to the first anime, so have a recommendation-by-proxy. (I think the one he mentioned was 'Conquerers of Shambala' or something to that effect). He keeps trying to get me to watch it, but I'd need to rewatch the first anime for the first time in almost two decades, and I don't have the time to put towards something I won't even like half of. But maybe someday...
Episode 15 of Brotherhood is typically regarded as the point in which the two series truly deviate from each other so it makes sense that you wouldn't remember stuff from opening 2 and onwards. I personally prefer Brotherhood because of some important plot points and some of my favourite characters aren't in the 2003 series (I really don't like calling it "the original", considering it really isn't similar to the original source) but still, both have their strengths and things they did better than the other one.
I really like the 2003 version, it's more mysterious and mystical, with less stupid jokes (well, I don't like Arakawa's humor), and I really like the option of such an anime with an unhappy ending. This is very rare for shounen. Therefore, Yab rather considered it two different versions of the same work. I really hope that you will give a reaction to the openings of the first version, because they are WONDERFUL
I do believe him the original fullmetal alchemist had a better pacing but brotherhood story is way better also, just so you know the original show stops following original Manga after like 9 or so episodes

IMO you can't be wrong if you pick any of the openings as your favorite. They're all just so good 🔥
