Gintama is possibly the most unique anime ever as it fits perfectly in every single genre you can think of. Comedy, Tragedy, Slice of Life, Action, Drama, Horror, Mecha, Magic, practically anything you can think of there is a solid chance of it fitting. And it balances everything perfectly as well.
I think Gintama is one of the few that made me truly feel the effective power of friendship in storytelling that is popularized in Shounen Jump/Shounen genre. The series is 80% slice-of-life & comedy, 10% drama & tragedy, and 10% action & mystery. Our main character, Gintoki's story is a scenario of "What if the Shounen Protagonist Fails His Quest and Still has to Live the Rest of His Life?" He's lazy, bad with finances, a sweet tooth/diabetic, a gambler, a liar, a cheat, an alcoholic, and a failure. But when things get rough, he will always be there to protect the people he loves. He doesn't strive to be great, legendary, or heroic; he just strives to be a good person, or be a better person from who he was yesterday. He usually runs away from fights and cheats. He only fights when necessary, because he understands the losses from war/violence. His wooden sword symbolizes the era brought about by his failures, but also a symbol of his will to fight & protect, but not kill. He's no idealist though. If there truly is no other choice, he will still kill even someone he cares about if it's the right thing to do. For a main protagonist Gintoki loses A LOT, because he's human and flawed. Even if he's strong for a human, compared to other creatures in the Gintama universe (aliens), he's weak. He has no desire to prove himself the strongest or make a mark in the world & history. That's why it's so natural that he needs help from friends to win. Power scaling isn't important in this series. The serious fights are rare, but always meaningful to the characters. There are no fights whose only purpose is to show off power. The side cast are all written with depth, and you'll be endeared to all of them as you see their daily lives. The side characters' lives don't revolve around the main characters, yet when peril arrives, you're convinced that they'll die for each other because of the shenanigans they've experienced together. When the plot darkens, and characters die, it's when you see that what they fight for isn't for some legendary goal. They fight for the hope that they can return home to their chaotic, crazy, stupid daily life; full of d*ck, a**, and toilet jokes.
You can't really compare Gintama to any other anime, because Gintama is EVERY anime lumped into one. It has every genre, just say it and Gintama probably has it.
Gintama the anime first aired in 2006, ended with Gintama the very final movie in 2021. It's a shonen anime, but the early seasons are more like comedic slice of life, getting more shonen-y in the later seasons. It's my favorite shonen of all time!
I agree with your statement about the openings. They do a great job displaying the dynamics between the characters and that’s what the shows primarily about. There isn’t much of a serious narrative until much later. The show is mainly comedic for the most part, but the main highlights aren’t just the serious moments or the fights it’s really the development of the characters and how good of a job they do to get you invested in the cast that makes Gintama great.
I would describe Gintama as a sitcom (with a lot of parodies of shounen jump series) that have a very serious undertones (and sword fights). It jumps between comedic and dramatic moments very seemlessly. Probably one of my favourite series of all times tbh.
You are correct that this is massive dog. Some reactors mistake it for cat. I can't understand those reactors. OP1, OP5, OP9, OP11, OP13, OP15 and OP21 are legendary to me. 15:25 Yes, this show makes references all over the place. 17:37 Pretty good pronunciation.
This is my favourite anime ever! It’s not really comparable to anything else, there’s nothing that could be like Gintama it’s so wonderfully unique and has so many different elements, that it’s hard to even describe. It’s just an amazing experience
"Element of humour"? Gintama is a mass of parody and comedy HAHAHA. Yes, Gintama falls into the shounen genre. HOWEVER, it strayed off from the 'typical' shounen anime, which precisely what makes Gintama unique. The MC is not a young boy, he doesn't have an ultimate goal, the anime doesn't have a 'journey' to chase the goal, and not much action stuffs. I'd say Gintama is 75% comedy, 25% action. It does has a plot, but you won't see the real thing until far far farrrr later in the series. Basically, I believe one needs to treat Gintama as weekly sitcom and SoL to enjoy it to the fullest (because I don't think comedy is something to be binged). Just not with the action mindset or you will get disappointed. Gintama done it really well in switching between the comedy and non-comedy parts. And yes it has a LOT of characters, and each of them will leave impression on you as you go into the show. Since Gintama is also full of anime parody and many Japanese culture references, it's better to get familiar with Japanese culture by watching more anime first. And sometimes the joke can get over the head. Gintama is the anime that is not for everyone, but it usually ends up high in your list, if not favourite, once you give it a try and it clicks with you. This just shows how special Gintama is :) There are a few flaws here and there but they are incomparable to all the good stuffs Gintama gave you. Watching Gintama is one of the best feelings I ever had and it will always stay as my number 1 anime of all time ^_^
Just gonna throw in a little suggestion. If you wanna see a glimpse of the commedic side of GinTama you could check out the part one and part two of "5 minutes of GinTama out of context". And if you wanna see the serious side / action then you could check out the top 10 fights IF you dont mind a bit of spoiler.
Great reaction man! About your question gintama is very unique it's hard to compare it to any thing but one punch man kinda reminds me of gintama not fully tho, gintama is more complex and the characters are more flushed out. But at times when I'm reading one punch man the simple things like how the characters interact with each other reminds me of gintama, I've always felt that way that's why I like one punch man. Gintama is my favorite animanga ever it's perfect!
The best way to compare Gintama to other media is going to sound crazy but I would compare it to a combination of the humor of the best episodes of the Simpsons plus the epic moments of Naruto.
You could virtually watch 1-2 episode mini-arcs just for the comedy (I know I did, and don't you guys tell me you watched the whole thing from start to finish in order!) or appreciate the longer, more story-driven arcs that ALSO have comedy. It's a meme-fest, a satire anime of the finest degree, that somehow still manages to capture us with serious, tragic and emotional moments too. I couldn't watch the whole thing, the old episodes didn't catch me as much as the more recent seasons, but the mini-arcs are damn hilarious ;)
quick question, i noticed on your patreon page you have reactions Naruto episodes out on it, will that content come to UA-cam at some point? or is it strictly for your patreon only?
Yes, but it will be condensed in order to avoid copyright issues. So what will be a full 22 minute video on Patreon usually equates to about 5 minutes on UA-cam 🙂
You should react to the special/variation openings. There is the yorinuki gintama-San openings which are openings for the episode version of the Gintama movies and there is also the gintama special opening Gintaman and Montama, opening 8 (paint), opening 9 (fail) and opening 17 V4. Opening 17 V4 is especially good, it has totally new animation and doesn’t have the blood splatters that made the other version hard to see.

Gintama falls onto comedy and Shonen categories even though at the end has a lot of drama. And to be honest I cannot compare Gintama to anything. I love that! Seems like it doesn't really fit in a box - very unique :)
Gintama is mostly a comedy, but when it gets serious you better be ready - you might cry your eyes out

You were rather off on most things, but at least you realize it’s a dog and not a cat.
I don’t think there’s a person on Earth who could guess the plot of Gintama just through openings lol. It’s one of the most unique anime of all time
No cap😂@@k-master973
@k-master973 not even us fans could guess lol 😂
@@k-master973 I watch too many of these and surprisingly, there are some people who have come close.

opening 17 has a second version that's more like an actual opening than just flashes of what happens in an arc. Wish you had watched that one.
There's actually 4 versions of opening 17
21:13 the best thing is - man in underwear is a shogun(basically military leader of country).

Jackie Chan was included in some of Gintama openings, what else reason do you need to watch best comedy ever!

react to the endings because they are also wonderful 😂😅
