Take Me Home - Phil Collins (Drum Cover)

- I call this trance or tribal drumming. You have to get in a zone and not allow your mind to wander and be so in tune with the groove.
This cover took me about one hour of playing the song over and over to find the pocket and get this take. Truthfully the groove is way more important that the tom fills, but we all wait for those moments to let go. Unfortunately, the tom fill is usually the place we rush, drag, or loose the groove coming out of the fill. .
Anyhow, I hung in there and found my way out of my momentary lapses of concentration back into the groove. This is a tougher song to play in the pocket than it looks.
I hope you enjoy my effort.

With closed eyes you think it is Chester Thompsom playing the last song
in a Phil Collins tour concert. Every hit and all the accents, they are all there.
Unbelievable accurate. Total relaxed playing, but every drummer knows that
this song needs total concentration
Thanks again for your time to show how it is done,
Robby 😀👍🥁
Thanks for the kind words Robert! Concentration is the word on this one! Thanks
I like to listen your groove ... over and over again!
Thanks for the feedback and kind words! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🤘🏻👍🏻😎😊🥁

Earl, this is a really good cover. Phil Collins was such an iconic artist in the 80s. Love those concert toms, especially on this tune
Steve The Drummer ... thank you Steve for watching. I had to do another Phil Collins song with these drums. 👍🏻✌🏻
Wow!!!!! That sounded so good. Loved it
Thanks for the feedback Pat! 👍🏻🤘🏻✌🏻🙏🏻
A big Phil Collins fan and you crushed it. I have always loved that kit you are playing on, very very nice work.
Drum Covers by Bill ... thanks Bill for the feedback! This kit is made for Phil Collins songs! I hope to do some more soon! Thanks for watching 👍🏻✌🏻
That feeling, when Phil Collins is my favourite drummer and singer.. Thanks for cover)
mister_Dima ... thanks for watching my friend! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Earl this is superb my friend exact to the song keep them songs coming
Thanks for watching and the kind feedback! Will do!
Love the sound and this kit Earl. Old school memories. Old school great sound . Another great Drummer who comes to mind in my day that used single headed toms back in the 70's when I was growing up was Nigel Olson. The great Drummer with Elton John. Love that sound and influence.
Greg Hickey ... I agree, Nigel Olson is a great influence on my playing ... and I always loved his concert tom kits! I have done a few Elton John songs with these drums. Thank you for watching!
Great cover...Nailed it! Great kit!
Stan Anderson ... thanks for watching! It’s the right kit for this song! I appreciate the feedback! 👍🏻✌🏻
Great job bro!!!,!!!, I love those beautiful Tom fills .... all the toms sound just like Collins set back in the 80,s!!!!.. this was perfect 👌
Bryan Corey ... that’s what I tried to do. Even though it’s a drum machine. Thanks for watching and your feedback Bryan!
Awesome job Earl🥁❤️👌much harder than it looks for sure, but you always make it look easy👍sounds fantastic as well 🎼👌
Lindsay Brown Drums ... thank you for the kind words Lindsay! I hope you have a great week!
I think my favorite part of this is when you fall out of the zone for a second and we can see you work back into it. Awesome.
Thanks for watching and your feedback. Yea, it’s a get in the zone song ... it’s almost a trance. You have to really lock in and not lose it. I know where you are talking about in the song. 🤘🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
So very well done!!!!!
Thanks for the feedback Retroman! 🙏🏻🤘🏻😎👍🏻
great job!!!! wow
Mike Martins .. thank you! 👍🏻
Rockin' those concert toms! Great groove, almost hypnotic!
AR Drummer ... thanks Adam ... I agree! It’s hypnotic! Thanks for watching
That’s fun pattern to play and you’re right, you do have become trance-like to the point you don’t have to think about it.
Gray Ghost Drum Covers .. by the way, YOU did a great job on your cover of this one. Thanks for watching!
Earl Bennett - earldrum I covered the live version, most of his stuff gets taken down.
Gray Ghost Drum Covers ... this one got through! I don’t understand UA-cam anymore ... there are “way” to many ads to deal with and they feed us such crap to watch, but drummers playing a song they make money on is a real problem? Crazy!
Earl Bennett - earldrum It’s not UA-cam. It’s the publishing company that holds the copyright to the songs in most cases. UA-cam protects themselves by blocking songs with copyright restrictions.
AWESOME...AWESOME...AWESOME... YOU DID A FANTASTIC JOB EARL TO MY FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME!!! I REPLAY THIS OVER AND OVER!!!
Thanks for watching Sal! 🤘🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Top top top merci. Gilles France

Little Drummer Channel ...Jerimy thank you for the good thoughts and prayers! Life is a challenge somedays for sure, but I have to dig into “hoping for the future” ... Thanks for the feedback my friend! 🤘🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Awsome Earl- was trying to watch Chester in the live version, but couldn't quite copy his patterns. Great song!
His live version was my inspiration for playing this one! Thanks for watching
Huge Tom's and rock solid drumming. You sir are the man🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for watching and the feedback! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻👍🏻
I want to learn how to play drums just for this song. Great job staying in the groove.
Thanks for the feedback. It’s not hard, but it take concentration to keep that groove! Thanks for watching
Wow. Solid work here dude!
Thanks for the feedback Todd! It’s like playing in a trance state! Crazy! Thanks! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😎
Very well done! Your snare reverb sounds amazing.
freddyshitberry champion ... thanks for the feedback ... it’s a UAD EMT PLATE 140 and a gated reverb from Waves Renn Reverb.
@@earldrum it sounds so good, always loved Phil Collins and his drum sounds. And I say you really replicated his sound.
freddyshitberry champion ... thank you Freddy! I appreciate you taking time to watch!
Very cool cover! This one give you a chance to play this song’s classic tom pattern. Sounds awesome throughout and it didn’t ever get boring! Well done Earl! Now I’m going to go practice this 😁.
Rich RW Dawg drums ... Rich thanks for watching! By the way I record one hour of me practicing this groove to get this video! I think I played it through about 10 times with about 10 takes that started and I stopped in the first or two minute because the take sucked! It’s is exercise in trance drumming like a drum machine, but the drum machine does it without breaking a sweat! Have fun my friend!
Great drumming Earl! I noticed you hit the bass drum at the same time as the snare hit...lol. Awesome
Michael sometimes 4 on the floor is right for a song. It helped me stay in the pocket on this one! I hope all is well!
Great Job Earl.!! Im a Professional Drummer My Whole Life. Chester Thompson is Fantastic. Been Watching Him My Entire Life. He is a Machine Dude.!!! Your Beats are Fantastic. They Are Spot on Man !!!!!!!
Thanks for the kind feedback Frank! I really appreciate your encouragement. This song is machine like and Chester kills this song! He is a machine and Phil too! You have to get into like a trance to lock in! So Frank, what city and what style music do you play? Thanks for watching!
@@earldrum Im a Rush Fanatic Earl. Neil Peart has been My Mentor. My Teacher. My Entire Life. He Has taught me So Many of My Drum Skills through out my Life. I owe it all To Him. May He Rest in Peace. Im Also A Huge Kansas Fan. I love Phil Ehart
He is Also a Phenomenal Drummer
Im From A small Town Youngstown Ohio. Keep up the Good Work Earl
You are A Fantastic Drummer.!!!!!!!!!
I Also Forgot To Mention to You Earl.!! That Your Drum kit Sounds Amazing.!!! Especially Your Snare Drum.Wow.!!! I have watched your video at Least 4 times now. Its Fantastic. I have it Saved in my Watch Later List. So Nice Talking to you my Friend.!!!!!!!!
@@frankfossaceca9616 thanks for the feedback! I try to get the drums mixed properly with the track. This song I’m playing over the original drum track. So there is a mix of reverb from the original drum part and my recording. I have had a recording studio for over 20 years and have been playing drums in studios for 30+ years. So I’ve learned a few tricks.
@@frankfossaceca9616 that’s awesome! Kansas and Rush have been an inspiration in my life too. I started playing general business gigs in college and I became obsessed with studio drummers. But the progressive rock and jazz rock of Chicago is where I cut my teeth on drumming. Thanks for sharing!
I know exactly what you mean about staying focused it is hard to start thinking about what comes next an then get off beat!! But you definitely make it look easy!! And I see you decided to mic from on top of the toms too!!
Zax Drums ... yes, I did this one after Ask Earl was recorded. It’s a great song, but it is a song you have to concentrate and focus on the loop and trance out. I find this challenging, but rewarding when I make it work. A lot of today’s music is this trance like drum grooves programmed in machines and recreated by drummers live. It is an art form now, I love improvising but it takes discipline to lock in with a drum machine and just trance out. Thanks for watching my friend!
@@earldrum I think you stepped up to the challenge and rocked Earl!!
Hey Earl!! Love this great job on this cover.
Christian Cea 6 ... thanks for the feedback my friend! 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻
Earl Bennett - earldrum You’re welcome!!! Same here my friend
Another awesome cover enoyed
DRUM ON ... thank you Ronnie! I appreciate the support!
@@earldrum 👍
Nice as usual
Thanks for watching Fred! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🎄😊👍🏻
great sound!
Marco Pisaneschi ...thank you! 👍🏻✌🏻
Some great fills after around 4:15. Nice one Earl.
Drum Bragg ... thanks Tim ... this is what everyone waits for ... but I will tell you playing the trance groove was harder than it looks!
@@earldrum - Yes indeed - and I totally got that!
Great job earl..... it’s kinda hard staying with the same beat for a long time .., without wanting to put your own spin on a song....
GAC Drums ... some songs require discipline to play them correctly. I still hear my phasing, passion and aggression in the drumming on this cover. But it’s important to play what’s required in a song like this one. By the way, if you watch Phil Collins videos of this song over time, you see it has changed as the drummer became the focus of the song instead of the drum machine. I like playing with the machine on this song. Some songs you play over the drum machine, some are best played just real drums. This was fun playing in the trance and nailing it ... it just took some practice! Thanks for watching
LOVE LOVE LOVE this song, Earl. Might be one of my favorites from Phil Collins. Sounds very close to the Ostinato beat...but I wouldn't really know. Looks like a Black Beauty? Nice job brother!
KMKanDrum ... thanks for watching and the feedback Kelly. Yes, it’s my 5x14 black beauty! It’s a great drum!
Nice
Thanks for watching Emanuele!
Very nice i enjoyed it. Could you do blue Sunday by the doors. Or love street.
Martin, Thanks for the feedback and watching my friend. 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻
Very nice.. Great sound of these fiber glass sound.. LOVE that sound.. I'd like to do my own version.. but I know.. I KNOW.. I won't be able to keep the fill going without my own creative input.. LOL... Really nice job! ;-)
RadekŠiklDrumming ... I understand your concern about keeping the pattern and groove. It’s easy to loose it. You have to go into a trance almost to play this one. But I like playing my own thing over songs to a point, but I try to keep it true to the original. Also I am never exact in my drum covers there is always a little bit of me! Thanks for watching!
@@earldrum You r welcome.. And I understand. I am in a tribute band and I'd go crazy if I had to play it all the way someone once recorded it.. they themself don't do that and people sometimes don't understand that certain parts were often more of an accident and not always perfectly thoughts thru things.. In case of your cover that would of course be most likely the oposite, but that's the very thing that I tend not to do.. I actually love to get creative.. as if I never heard the original drum part.. ( and often it is the case, too ). Now interesting that you r mentioning the trans, for I heard Jojo Mayer saying that he keeps playing his grooves so long that he really starts hear and see 'ïnteresting things' and he too mentioned a state of trans.. :)
This seems like it would be a really nice drums only video too buddy! ✌😎
Thanks for the idea Jerimy! Unfortunately, I don’t keep my logic sessions because would have no hard drive space! 🙄😳😁
@@earldrum I understand my friend! I deal with that sometimes too! :)
Nice cover. Could you do a cover of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin?
simselum ... that’s a cool song, I don’t know if it gets by the UA-cam police? But I look into it ... Led Zep songs don’t always get through the publishing filters! Thanks for watching
I like to listen your groove ... over and over again!
😊😊😊😊👍🏻🤘🏻🙏🏻
