A big thanks to Samantha for the priority request. This was a blast to check out. What is your favorite ceremony Prince performed at?
George Harrison's induction, or Super Bowl for sure
@@MargueriteMingus Funnily enough, both of these have been reacted to. The induction one is still going through the copyright process
Can't say I have a favorite ceremony per season but I thought his performances at the 2006 Brit Awards and 1987 MTV VMA shows were pretty dope
No pyrotechnics. No backing tracks. No lip-synching. REAL music PERFORMED by REAL musicians! Take notes y'all
A very solid performance. Although I do like pyrotechnics and backing tracks when appropriate. It just depends on the context of what is being played.
....no passion.
Sheila E. is a world renowned percussionist whose father is percussion royalty. She is arguably the most successful and influential of his proteges.
Prince did equally impressive live sets at the 2006 Brit Awards and the 2007 Alma Awards. He was truly gifted.
From what I have seen, I don't know if Prince ever did a bad performance
Prince’s outfit from that Batman video (the song is batdance) was dressed as a character named Gemini. 1/2 batman, 1/2 Joker. Prince himself was a gemini.
After watching that performance, u can see why all of us old school Prince fans think there is no one like him. Seamlessly transitioning different styles of music and bringing a charisma that is rare to find. He was one of a kind.
I saw him in person and he always gave 150%. He could play every instrument on the stage and more! Sheila E is great as always.
Prince did the entire Batman soundtrack!
Yes, he made them an offer they didn't dare refuse. They wanted to pay him to just use one of his existing hit songs in the movie. He countered that and said, what you would be paying all the artists for, to use their songs on your soundtrack, I will do it all myself and you can pay me just a little bit less than what that would be and I'm going to give you nothing but original songs.
The thing that stands out about this performance for me the most, is no one else would do this. He's getting a Lifetime Achievement award and he uses that to showcase other performers that he has worked with over the years and songs that he was influenced by - he didn't need covers, the man has hundreds of songs that he could have drawn from to self-promote, but he clearly wanted to honour the NAACP award with something different. If you like his medley work - all arranged by him of course - his Rock N Roll Hall of Fame induction performance is fantastic (not the Guitar solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps that everyone reacts to, but his own induction show from that same night).
His medley work just is something unreal. So seemless from the ones I've heard so far
Agreed.
Prince and Sheila E. were twin flames...they loved each other deeply, but their love of MUSIC always came first and they never linked up. Prince himself talked about this in interviews.....He loved him some Sheila E. !!
Obama was a senator at this time, and widely known in political circles as a rising star.
@@amontaineaurore4700 The fact they didn't know this made my head hurt.

I would love to see the both of you react to "its gonna be a beautiful night live" there's some fun surprise in that one and the performance is crazy high energy too. I love his solo's in this one and the madcat tele is funky af 😎
I'll add it to the list. Is there a specific performance or just any of them?
@@AceofBadeReacts Sorry YES great question dude. The one you should watch starts with a lava ball. Uploaded by Freed American channel has about or over 399k views. Hope the two of you are there, bothof you guys are such a vibe. Trust "It's gonna be a beautiful night" is wild! Some really cool surpises in there & a young Sheila E as well. @@AceofBadeReacts Hey! They are referring to this performance ua-cam.com/video/eWESS-xjhTs/v-deo.htmlsi=O2GM5C3PNxYHsDJx 💜💜💜
Respectfully, I must correct something you stated. Prince did indeed write the entire soundtrack for a Batman movie. The 1989 “Batman” soundtrack album, was written entirely by Prince. This soundtrack served as the musical companion to the 1989 film directed by Tim Burton. Released on June 20, 1989, the album features tracks like “Batdance,” “Partyman,” and “The Arms of Orion.” Interestingly, this was the first and only soundtrack album by Prince for a movie in which he was not involved as an actor.
You might enjoy Sheila E. And Prince performing "Love Bizarre" live.
The fact that he died at age 57 and did so much boggles the mind. There are people frequently living past 100 and they die and people forget they were even here a week later.
LESSON!!
He was a busy person. He liked doing things
@@AceofBadeReacts I believe you missed the point.
I went to a handful of concerts the year he passed and they had portions that were tributes to him and it’s easy to see why. Influential across many people and genres!!
That is Tamar Davis singing Aretha Franklins "I never loved a man like i love you".
Wow!!! What a great reaction to a great performance. Samantha did a great job of providing the context and additional info you were looking for so I’ll just add one thing. You mentioned how apparent it was that Prince put a lot of thought into this performance to make it special. That was how he felt about every single performance he ever did. It didn’t matter if it was an event with famous people, the Super Bowl halftime show, a concert at a big arena with thousands, an after show at a small club, a performance at a children’s hospital, or a pop up show at Paisley Park, he always respected and cared so much about the audience that he’d put everything into the performance every time.
Great request from Samantha! It really gave you the opportunity to see the wide range of what Prince can do. 💜💜💜
He just did so much and yeah it definitely sounds like he put everything into every performance that he possibly could
How many GOAT'S fit on one stage? GENIUS
So much fun to watch you guys react to this one! I'm gonna try to answer some of the questions you guys had, but I will probably miss some stuff. Lol.
The NAACP Image Awards is an annual award ceremony similar to the GRAMMYs or the Oscars or something like that, but it is hosted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and celebrates several forms of art - film, TV, music, literature, and theatre. This performance was towards the end of the night, and I can't even imagine having to perform anything else after that. 🤣 I remember I was 11 when this aired, and I waited all night with my VCR ready to record this performance. I was shushing everyone in the house as if their talking would affect the quality of my VHS recording. 🤣🤣
At this time, Obama had just been elected as a US senator after serving in the Illinois state senate for several years. Prince played a show at the White House with Stevie Wonder in 2015 for the Obamas (that they privately funded). I know having rhythm isn't a qualification for being president, but it was sure nice to have a president with rhythm. 😅
The first woman that sings the Aretha Franklin song is Tamar. Prince calls her Ashley right before she starts singing cause that's her first name (Tamar is her middle name and stage name). He was working on producing an album for her at the time which I think was only released in Japan. And he played guitar on her tour around this time. It's actually really funny cause Prince does the same thing with Lianne La Havas during his SNL performance in 2014. He calls her Charlotte instead of Lianne, but that's actually her middle name. Lol
Okay....the guitar....Prince's guitar tech, Takumi, would have caught his guitar when he threw it into the audience. He's also the one that caught it after the rock and roll hall of fame performance. They had that routine down so well. Takumi would know the exact moment Prince was going to throw his guitar, and he would run through and grab it without stopping, so when the camera panned to the audience, he would be gone, and you just see a bunch of people in the audience looking the direction he ran with a very confused expression on their faces. If you're interested, Takumi is the one who brings the bass guitar out to him as well. There's also a performance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 2004 where you can see Takumi catch Prince's guitar as he's walking up for the interview part of his appearance. Takumi is amazing and has so many great stories. He toured with Rob Zombie as a teenager, and I think he was working with Lenny Kravitz last year.
As far as the Batman soundtrack, Prince actually did do the whole soundtrack for the 1989 Tim Burton Batman movie. Danny Elfman did the amazing film score, but Prince did the soundtrack. Tim Burton had asked him for one song, but Prince loved Batman so much that he just did a whole album. The Batman theme song was actually the first song Prince learned to play on piano when he was 7. There's a clip of him playing it when Oprah asks him if he remembers the first song he learned during an interview with him in 1996. The clip you saw was from the music video for Batdance. Prince is actually dressed up as his own character called Gemini, which was half Batman and half Joker. You should definitely check out that music video.
I love that you recognize Prince's humility when it comes to sharing the spotlight with other artists. A lot of people think he was egotistical, but he was so supportive of so many people and constantly trying to lift others up. He was the artist being honored here, and he really didn't have to share the stage with 4 other artists, but he did. AND not only that, but even the songs he chose to play were honoring other great musicians - Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Larry Graham, and Santana.
The introduction here is just so good as well. I love that they highlighted his fight for artists' rights too. Because you're right, not that many people have done what he did. The media framed him as being crazy and tried to start rumors that he was having financial difficulty and all this just so other artists wouldn't listen to what he was preaching about freedom. It kind of irked Prince that T Swift was getting all this credit as a sort of pioneer for talking about ownership and pulling her music from Spotify in 2015 when he had been fighting that fight for 20 years and was basically shunned by the industry for it. Anyway....not trying to start drama over here, so I'm gonna end that thought right there before getting into a rant about the lack of recognition for Black innovators. 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks again for this reaction! It was so fun to watch and a great way to start a Monday morning! 💜

Prince did the entire soundtrack for "Batman" in 1989. The clip you saw is from the "Batdance" official music video. Sheila E performed her 1985 song "Glamorous Life" which Prince produced. You can watch that music video as well. And yes, that was Morris Day and Jerome from their group The Time performing their single "The Bird".
prince wrote both the glamorous life and the bird
Wow so much history
You have to do a reaction video to Prince at the ALMA awards. It is an absolute must do!
I'll add it to the list
He did the entire sound track for Batman! ❤
I really enjoyed you guys reaction. To see Sheila play even better watch the Alma Awards. Pure fire . Prince is not afraid to share the spotlight.
Very cool. It has been added to the list
NOW THATS AN A PERFORMANCE !!!! SOOOOOO Blessed to have seen Prince, Morris Day and Sheila E throughout their careers from the beginning of success live in concert a lot . Same energy always. oh 100%. There's more on the way, too
That lady in charge of all of that is Sheila Escavito, who's dad played with Santana and is an incredible percussionist!
Oh cool. I did just check out a Santana performance recently. I'm not sure if he was in it or not though
Prince did the whole Batman soundtrack. Check out the videos. This is epic!! Pure musicianship. The joy on your faces says it all🎉❤
I just realized they ended with the same close of Santana's Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock. *Mind Blown* Prince, that is all.
Ironically I had just checked out Santana around the same time as this reaction. I didn't catch it either
Yes, I thought that was interesting, since when Sheila E.was just 18 yrs, old, she became romantically involved with Carlos Santana, apparently unaware he was married (she does a tribute performance for him at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2013) Also, she and Prince began a romantic relationship in the early 1980's (while Prince was still involved with Susannah Melvoin, twin sister of The Revolution band member, Wendy Melvoin) and were briefly engaged in the late 1980s. Complex back story to the closing song for this award ceremony.

I think my favorite thing about Prince is exemplified in this performance. He's there doing a show at a ceremony aboyhim, and what does he do? He spends most of the show highlighting all the other musicians in his band.
I've learned he was a very down to Earth person and that he didn't hog the spotlight
I just burst in tears I miss him
I never got a chance to see him
@@AceofBadeReacts he was such a sweet man and so unreal
@@Maysoon3121 I haven't really heard anything bad about him
@@AceofBadeReacts people called him arrogant in 90s it was part of his act , he had alters and this is why he made so different kind of music still with his touch , but some exs try to trash him but anyway he was a good man with his good and bads like us he was quiet and funny and so charming especially with women .
Sheila E. is the daughter of Latin percussion master Pete Escovedo,, and many of her greater family are also musicians. Yes, drummers routinely break drum sticks while playing and will have a back of sticks so they can grab a new one as needed.
Prince played 27 different instruments, but primarily guitars, bass guitar, keyboards (of various kinds) and drums (live as well as drum machine programming). And he was good enough at all of them that he routinely would sit in with (or fly into his home studio Paisley Park) musicians with 20, 30, even 40 years of professional experience and he would give them little lessons and techniques that would melt their brains and send them scrambling back to their practice studios to practice and really learn the things that he taught them. His musicianship was almost without peer, at least in the greater "rock" world. Prince really only did 3 things: played basketball, made pancakes, and made and recorded music. And by all reports, he was amazingly good at all 3.
Oh, and that was Morris Day singing (and Jerome Benton, as always, playing Morris's side man) The Bird, one of the two huge hits by The Time from Prince's movie Purple Rain. The Time was an out-and-out Minneapolis funk band - a Prince side project where he wrote nearly all of the music for, and that enabled him to move on from funk music to explore new styles under his own name. Prince and Morris grew up in the same neighborhood and were friends from their teens.
Wow. Thank you for the information. I'm still learning so much about Prince
Welcome 2 the world of Prince, find its gonna be a beautiful night, u see him drum
This is what WE call a medley/Revue...Motown was ok but Minneapolis was the opposite of Motown.
Interesting
This is 2005 Four years before Obama was President. This is the NAACP awards
Yes, that's Sheila E, one of the greatest percussionists of just about any generation. She's also played regular drums in some of Prince's live performances, and she is an absolute beast on those too. I just worry about anyone who has to follow that performance lol
Did anyone follow up after this?
Really proud of you for reacting to this performance. Mind blowing. But yet… very classic Prince. This is what a Prince show always feels like. Keep up the great work and discovery of the man. 💜
He's such a grear performer
Prince, in fact, did do the entire soundtrack for Tim Burton's Batman and dressed as the Joker in at least one of the videos.
Wow I had no clue. I just remember Joker dancing to one song in the movie
You should watch his performance at the Super Bowl. It was pouring rain, but that didn't stop him. It was AWESOME!!!!
How did you know what tomorrow's reaction was?
Back in 2005, and in front of the audience, in person and T.V., the performers were well known, and needed no introduction! ❤💯
That's a good point. Unfortunately I'm a little behind in terms of knowing a lot of the performers out there
It's funny watching young people react to real musicians and music😂😂😂
Prince sang and played all instruments for one of his albums.

Have a suggestion for you…and I believe it’s still on YT…Please react to Prince’s “Always in my Hair,” performance- live from The Aarhus in Denmark - Aug 7, 2013, with his protégé band (at that time) “3RDEYEGIRL”. His guitar solo on this performance (IMO) is phenomenal . Prince had slowed down playing guitar during period, complaining of the excruciating pain in his hands. You’d see him more on the piano, and “directing while performing.”

Emma Kok the girl with paralysed stomach has a new song out with Andre Rieu. It is called "Dancing On The Stars" so it is a song in English. In 2 weeks it already racked up 3.2 million views.
