24:10 "Siuan asks Moiraine if she Cannot say or Will not say." Remember that the Aes Sedai cannot lie and they cannot break a promise or an oath. If Moiraine said she would not then that would just be "contempt of court" or withholding information but since she said she "Cannot" it could also mean that she had sworn to someone to not say anything, and thus the Oath to not lie would stop her from saying anything. Even if she wanted to she would be physically unable to form the words to say the reason.
Episode 6 is my fav of all in season 1 (close race with #4). This is the first episode where covid had a big impact on the storyline, The actor who plays Mat just didn´t return to filming after the show had it´s second close down due to covid. Mat not joining the rest of the gang at the end is not in the book or in the showscript just the show writers in crises-mode. The last episode though is the one that really suffered from covid restrictions and a lot of the episode was rewritten and scaled down. They were forced to give up on shooting locations and action scenes. Thanks for your reaction you are both doing a really god job with analyses and you have lots of interesting ideas. Looking forward to the last two of this season.
Thank you! We just watched episode 8 and honestly really enjoyed it even if they had to change things. And yup we just wish that no one had told us about Mat's actor, that's why I stopped reading comments until now to avoid further spoilers for the season.
14:20 "Have we seen that symbol?" Yes you have. It is in the first episode, the dead sheep were laid out in that shape, and in the opening of the third episode with Nynaeve stabing the Trolloc, its blood spreads out in the same shape. It is called the Dragon's Fang and used by others to label someone as a Darkfriend. It used to symbolize the Male half of the One Power (the Yin-Yang symbol being the full Male+Females working together, two halves of a whole) with the White being the Flame of Tar Valon and linked to the Women Aes Sedai. Since the Dark fang is so linked with the Dragon and men who can channel it got synonymous with madness, evil and the Dark one. So people scrawl that on the hut of someone you suspect is a Dakrfriend (in this case Siuan could channel, something which is forbidden by Law in the country she lived due to them thinking it is evil) so someone probably saw her channel, burned down their hut and painted the Fang.
A couple things to note: In episode 2, when Moiraine was feverish, she whispered, "Siuan." You can barely hear it, but it's clearly spelled out in the subtitles. Remember the story Nynaeve told in episode 1 about her mentor being turned away from the White Tower because of her ragged clothes and peasant accent? Now compare that to how Siuan must have arrived. Something doesn't add up...
Siuan is potent with the power, so the Tower would have accepted her even if she turned up wearing a white cloak. The mentor may have been weak in the power which is why they refused her along with her rags - we don't know enough about her to make a judgment on the show slipping up. If you apply this way of scrutinizing shows/fantasy worlds then pretty much everything doesn't add up.
On the topic of "race mixing", the books themselves don't actually emphasize what we think of as race. And you're right about the Age of Legends being a globalized society. So it really wasn't something the author particularly emphasizes. There are many people who criticize the show and they really only reveal how little they know about the series they claim to defend.
Sorry, I don't fully understand... The books clearly emphasize race, the stereotypes, the physical attributes as well as cultural differences of each, even accents and how they speak. Borderlanders, like Lan, generally think Cairhienin, like Moiraine, are the worst kind of manipulators. *What the books do not emphasize, not even mention, is hatred or discrimination towards **_physical racial attributes._* The characters can hate cultures, occupations, but never a face defined different by race. The Age of Legends was a globalized society, built on Aes Sedai... who had ONE RACE exclusively for servants. Call them happy, utopian slaves who can ask for their freedom, but who would want to, when serving lifelong in a utopia is their 'ultimate happiness'. I'm happy with the show, but the books have a more accurate way of telling an anthropological story. Tar Valon and Caemlyn, both melting pots, are very mixed, whereas Shienar (tall) or Cairhien (short) are very homogeneous, as well as in the Atha'an Miere (dark skin) and the Aiel (tall, red hair). The Two Rivers was secluded as well, but slowly had influx due to certain events, and the Tuatha'an are mixed, but it makes sense considering they're nomads, despite their origins. Rand himself was singled out many times, and once for the color of his skin - something unheard of in the Two Rivers. (What timestamp did they talk about this, so that I can have some context?)
@@philc2729 thanks! I probably won't search or watch anything. I think this is how I never see spoilers for anything. I never research anything I'm interested in.
Episode 6 is definitely my favorite of this season, but I'm very much of a Moiraine stan (and I love Moiraine and Siuan's relationship 🥰). Very glad you're enjoying the show! Looking forward to see the reactions for the next two episodes...
She's such a good character but I'm glad she's not too perfect. Like she's flawed. And also not afraid to break rules and see the person she loves. This episode had great emotion behind it.
Loial is important...There are guide posts in the ways to find your way through... They are written in Ogier script... so they need Loial to guide them to the Eye of the World. The Gateways are pretty ancient... created by the Ogier to reach the Steadings.. which is the only place Ogiers can live long-term... they suffer from the "Longing" when they are away from the Steadings too long... watch the xray shorts for lore on many things... Many of your guesses are quite good... Love your exploration of the show... I enjoy your channel and expect to watch your reaction to Rings of Power... if you are planning to do so...
Slight correction to your statement: Gateways and the Ways were created by Age of Legends Male Aes Sedai and bequeathed to Ogier as custodians of this realm. Gateways and ways were created with power but power is not needed to operate them (instead you need a magical object called an avendesora leaf to open them). The show adds the option of using power to operate the ways and doesn't show us using the magical leaf.
They were built for Ogiers so that they don't need to leave their Steddings (places where Ogiers live) very long. This is explained in one of the short stories that was released. After watching the first season, I strongly suggest to watch those short animations. They are very informative concerning the Lore around the Dragon and the world. The Ways are sort of in a parallel world where distances are different.
Soundtrack is 💯 I've watched a lot of non readers reactions and one thing I think the show did a great job of is answering the questions of a previous episode with the next one. The visuals are TOP tier as well. The cast is so so good they really nailed the characters and that really makes it easy for a book fan from way back such as myself to enjoy any divergent story lines as they can be from an alternate turning of the wheel or fill in behind the scenes for me. Still loving your reactions! Can't wait for szn 2 ugh 2023 oh well its a walk in the park compared to the old 2-3 years between books.
Thank you!! And yes for me the show has explained things pretty well so far. Different than the Witcher for me which I enjoyed but sometimes found it hard to follow what was going on.
Just found your reviews recently and am loving them. Yall have a great perspective on the story and the characters so far. I've seen other comments flesh out the Lore on Ogier a little bit but in the show itself, it's only mentioned briefly but Moiraine does say she needs Loial to go with them as a navigator through The Ways. Can't wait to see what you think of the penultimate episode.
spoilers if you plan to read the books at some point about the healing of matt. in the book it wasn't actually that easy to heal him :) moiraine was able to slow the growth but he needed basically a full circle of sisters to heal him.
25:00 About what the Aes Sedai think of the Dragon A bit of RAFO (Read And Find Out, as the late author used to say when fans asked him certain questions), but.. It is problematic. If the Dragon is reborn that means a new Armageddon is approaching, and no one wants that. A new battle between Good and Evil, which broke the world the last time it happened. You said in an episode that you are Christians, so imagine if someone goes around proclaiming themselves to be Jesus. Jesus travels around and starts to get a following. Do you think people would just amass and follow "Jesus" without question? Some would, but a lot of people (Christians included) would probably think him to be a charismatic Cult leader instead of the promised son of God. We would take him in and put him in a mental asylum with padded walls. Possibly drug him up to be more managable. But what if that person is indeed the son of God? The real Jesus? Ment to be here since the FInal battle between Angels and Demons is approaching? What if Jesus is ment to gather people under his banner, to make Humanity strong and unified to withstand the Final Battle? And instead we put him in a cell and drugged him up.. Add to that the fact that is the Dragon is a man who can channel, then inevitably he will go mad. A strong male channeler who is mad, someone who can call lightning, cause earthquakes and start fires is not a good thing even if he is needed to fight the Dark One.
There are things to complain about in the show, but it is impossible to make an adaptation that someone doesn’t complain about, but I have to say, the fact that they took the time to write original music in the old tongue went along way to allowing me to forgive a lot of the other problems.
Don't know if yall will see this comment by much love as always. This time im actually gonna add to the comment as i think of stuff through the watch haha! This is the language of the previous age and the show developed it out using references from the books, which was a super nice touch. Moiraine has some such badass lines in this episode haha! Sass queen for real :) they definitely centered it around her this episode as yall mentioned, i heard/saw they wanted to do it to pay homage to the 'POV' nature of the books, as Robert Jordan was one of the main pioneers of multiple POV fantasy stories. Love watching you guys discover the series piece by piece and love how much we all love Loial he is best boi. See you next week :D
Oh and Ogier live in the Steddings haha :) you can learn more about the ogier and the stedding in one of the animated origins episodes that I am I think supposed to keep reminding you about :D
The ending of this episode is the real start of the Covid effect. During the Covid lockdown, the actor playing Mat backed out of the show so they did some reshoots and used old footage to not have him go into The Ways since they didn’t have the actor anymore to film episodes 7 & 8. For S2, the character has been recast.
Yeh I hope it is not too much of a Spoiler saying that Mat was ment to go with them into the Ways, but due to Real World circumstances they could not. So they had to re-write the script in a panic and now they have to find a way to re-connect everything again. So if things seem a bit off it's because they could no longer film at the places they had planned, they did not have many extras for cool Trolloc-costumes, etc. There will be a thing in the last episode which will seem really wierd which is quite probably connected to there not being any Mat-actor so part of the story had to be cut but, I'm just going with the flow on this part seeing as it was not really planned to be like this.
Oh! I truly apologize if this is spoilery, because I do like to stay away from that and respect that others do as well. I didn’t think it was after the end of this episode since the breaking news was released to the audience as S1 was airing. If I did though, I’m sorry about that. 😞 God bless! 🙏🏾
@@LeahB31 Naaah I personally think that explaining things that happened "Behind the camera", even if it impacts the story or not, is fair game. The problem with the dragon is, if it is a man, he needs to fight the dark one in the last battle, but due to the dark one corrupting the man half of the source during the last last battle at the end of the last age, the age of legends, he will go insane. So if the dragon is a man, you need him but he might not keep his sanity long enough and could break the world again or even might join the dark one

I love the show but the adaptation is more like the Percy Jackson movies. The story beats are there but how they get there is different. It definitely has a FanFiction feel, but i still enjoy finding similarities. I wouldn't be surprised if over the course of the series some of the big plot twists are different, so that the show and books don't spoil each other. It's like a game to figure out what the show will do
roflmao i don't think they are haters :D in the last age, yea it was a world sort of like ours, then there was the breaking and humanity basically went extinct with little tribes here and there. in the books, robert jordan wrote different areas of the world as having different ethnicities. there is nothing in concrete about how mixed the little villages are. it's more i guess on how you want to interpret it. for one example, there is a city called caemlyn. the leader of that nation is a queen and has been a queen for quite a few generations. they are normally written as quite fair skinned, blue eyes with strawberry blonde like hair, but the "origin" of the blood line was a black lady. there's another nation of sea fairing people and they are all basically depicted as black people. but there was never any real explanations of how much people are mixed in terms of ethnicities in places like caemlyn or the 2 rivers.
