I'm sure this was already mentioned by others, but I didn't see it in the comments... but EVERY 550 Maranello was a manual. Ferrari only introduced the F1 transmission in the 575. You correctly mentioned that most 575s were with that automated manual transmission, with only a few people opting for the manual on the 575.
550 Maranello is one of my top 3 Ferraris of all time. I absolutely agree with your colour choices for this car. For me, it'd be toss up between the TdF blue and black colours. Excellent review, glad UA-cam recommended this video to me.
These cars have everything going for them - looks, power, manual transmission, natural successors to the Daytona, last of their kind, useable, great handling, great sound…. List is never ending plus ‘550 Maranello’ what a great name for a Ferrari. Look at prices of these over the pond in the USA - almost double! 550 prices only going one way, mark my words!
Great video Damian, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The shape of these 550’s just seem to get better and better as time goes by. Agreed also that they look fantastic in dark grey. Keep up the good work!
“My name is Jack .... Campbell !! Jack .... Campbell !! ....President!!!”. Love the 550 from the film “The Family Man”. Actually once owned by Nic Cage too. What a Horse !!!

Damian everything you’ve said about this Ferrari is true. My best friend has a TDF Blue with Curio leather interior. I’ve driven his car on a couple of occasions and thoroughly enjoyed it. It has an enormous reserve of torque and I recall being on the open road, 100 kph 4th gear, rounding a corner with 12 vehicles and a 2.7 km of straight road.... Beans, beans and more beans and I was exceeding 250kph, with all 12 vehicles behind me and an awesome sweeping left hand corner. These Ferrari’s are just so smooth and enjoyable to drive. So good luck in finding your ideal version Damian.
Wonderful happy driving video experience. Well done! My 1997 550 has 75,000 miles on it and third place at Concorso Italiano; and was test mule for the first tuned exhaust for a 550 in the world. My 550WSR example was victim of arson in Cheshire in 2020. The 550 is THE Ferrari. Everything before and after is not what it ...IS!
Great to see you and James teaming up and I was really looking forward to your review of the 550. Was looking at the SuperAmerica this week - for something different, but the 550 just ticks so many boxes....ok, I will get one!
Agree 💯 the 550 is the Ferrari that suits more subtle colours. I like the silver with bordeaux, TDF with tan or black and tan. Why is it there aren't more tan interior cars I love tan 👍
Finally! Since I have seen the Lambo Video at the other channel I was waiting for this Video. I am not disappointed! Cool Review including the history of it! 10 thumbs up!
An evening of autotrader is ahead of me... thanks chap... I plan on starting with the 550, meandering towards a Escort Cosworth and then ricocheting off into the bushes via a Pigani. It’s a worm hole you can never leave. 🤯
I can remember seeing them as a teenager for the first time on the front of french car magazines whilst on holiday at the time. We had all piled in to my dads 24v ford probe for the 2000 mile round trip to the south of France. Strange what sticks in the memory bank!
Great content as usual Damian. Iain Tyrell recently did a video on adjusting the throttle cable on a 456 to liberate some more power from the engine. Perhaps James’s sticky throttle requires the same fix?
I still remember (and have somewhere!) the Clarkson video where the 550 is part of a group test on track. Tim Harvey loves it and I can see why. I have always thought it is a great looking car and yes, in a dark colour and manual it would be ideal.
All the talk of the manual being the one to have.....The 550 only came in manual. It was the 575 that came in F1 and Manual and clearly what you really want is a manual 575 with FHP in TDF blue :)
Clarkson did indeed love the 550. BUT he did say that the headlights are “like candles in jam jars”. And as a long term 550 owner I can attest that the headlights don’t match the engine. So night driving on unlit roads is a challenge
This goes to show that you don’t need to spend £170,000 on a Roma! Plus a 550 comes with Manual gearbox. I was pleased to hear that this is a high mileage car too. The more miles they do, the sweeter they drive! I have a 1988 Manual 69,000 miles Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Coupe, which is also very easy to see out of & cost £34,000! It drives like new & is plenty fast enough to easily take 2 adults & 2 children plus luggage across Europe, which was the aim of the Pinafarina design. Some people deride a Mondial, but once they drive one, they see the light! I believe Ferrari need to revert to accessible everyday useable cars with Manual shifts, that are easy to see out of and have no complex ecu electrics! In fact like the 550 & Mondial 3.2!
Great job , love you guys, totally agree. Again how many of us don't like Ferrari's in red, I find myself looking for other colours and thinking ahh.. that's so much better than Corse, I don't know, just me let me know. I so look forward to all your videos, oh I watch James as well thanks for the cross pollination there, I saw him driving your Gallardo in the back ground. Cheers from Canada.
Sold my 458 spider yes I regret it every day yet I like new trying things only having two spaces I am now looking for a 550 Marinello to fill the void... great video I appreciate your work.
At last a review I can relate too. The Maranello is such a wonderful car. You've nailed it's qualities so well. An effortless car to drive, whether on a long cruise or attacking a winding mountain road. The engine is so sublime. Pulls like a train. The Maranello is the last of the great Modena GT cars before all the software changed the game. I've had my 575 for 6 years now and personally think it's a better car than the 550 (all my mechanics agree). 515 bhp and 201 mph. The F1 gear box is fine, not like a DC box, but quicker than a manual. I drive it constantly and it's a much easier daily driver. I've never understood all the complaints about the early cars handling. They handle fabulously if the car is set up properly. And I'm sorry Damien, but I have to disagree with you though on the best colour choice. Whilst TDF blue and Grigio are great, Rosso Corsa really shows off the fabulous shape. But each to their own. Great to see you pointing out all the classic references to past icons. You can see the lineage from the 250/275/365 cars. It's one of the best looking V12 cars in the Ferrari catalogue. A bargain these days. You definitly need one in the Carguys garage. By the way, the Patek is so cool on your wrist.
It’s definitely a stunning car. Like all front engined Ferrari’s they are better suited to darker metallic colours. I would want a Ferrari 575 manual with the Fiorano handling pack, spec would be Grigio Silverstone with a Tortora red interior with the Daytona seats. A really classic Ferrari combination.
I had one back in the day in silver over tan, and loved it. I don’t recall them producing the 550 in anything but a manual, did they? Keep up the good work Damian. I really enjoy your channel.
Thought about buying a black manual 550 four years ago when they were 50k euro. I bought my 355 spider instead. Now you’ve made me wonder if that was the right choice :-) Great review again Damien!
Wonderful car and definitely ageing well. Agree about the spec too, has to be TdF blue or Grigio Silverstone for me. Would be great to see one in The Car Guys garage!

Hi Damian, I've watched your excellent review a couple of times now, and would have to agree with just about all of your comments and preferences. Do you have any thoughts about brake upgrades, other than a switch to the 575 fronts?
TheCarGuys.TV haha it’s all good we love you anyway. Jokes aside this is hands down the best automotive channel on UA-cam. I’ve watched all the vids I found you at approx 21k subs and went back to watch all of them 👍👍 Ps love the watch guys too

Coming soon!
It still looks better than most new Ferraris
I am the proud/lucky owner of a 550...Black/black...your choice of the word "sublime" is 100% correct.

Lovely car. Always liked them. Glad you mentioned that Ferrari should bring back the 'click clack' manual gearbox. I agree.

The 550 Maranello is beautiful! It's pure class.
I love the fact that the 550 has been loved and driven and enjoyed, the way its meant to be.
