The Ferrari F512 M has always been ‘the ugly’ Testarossa, and as a consequence it has never been a consideration for TheCarGuys’ garage. Despite the fact that only 501 were ever made, making it one of the rarest modern Ferraris.
But this week on #DriveEveryFerrari, we get to explore and drive this rare collectible flat-12 supercar, thanks to friend of the channel, Andrew.
Why does it look the way it does? Does it drive better than the Testarossa 512TR? How fast is it? How loud is it? What’s it like when you give it the full Beans? And would we buy one?
All these questions and more will be answered in this week’s episode.
Drive Every Ferrari is a series within the main TheCarGuys.tv channel, which aims to get behind the wheel of every Ferrari road car from the company’s origins right up to present day. It’s going to be extremely tough to get them all, but with your help, we’ll get there.
If you have a Ferrari that hasn’t been covered yet, please get in touch and see if your car can be the star of a future episode. Email: Damian@thecarguys.tv

Damn, that thing sounds amazing, but I agree, the 512 TR is so much better looking! I've no doubt the 550 / 575 are better cars, but they will never have the wow factor or the noise of the Testarossas! You would need a 599 GTO, or F12 tdf or something to achieve a similar sense of occasion!
599 GTO sounds good but looks so goofy
For me the pop up lights is everything
The 512TR is the most beautiful design of all Testarossas...
Nah. The grille on the 512tr is too "90s" while the rest of the car is the pure embodiment of everything that was 1980s excess. It needs the original grille. An argument could be made for the more curved/sloping roofline down the back of the 512tr and that really comes down to preference. But when they changed the grille it became a homologation of two eras and it has always been an eyesore for me.
nope. the extended rear butresses and the front ruin the cars looks
100%
Truly, a UA-cam comment.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the #driveeveryferrari series - its been epic and the Testarossa serial has been super informative and emotive to watch. I recognise the huge effort in bringing these together and as a subscriber i am enjoying every bit of it. Well done!
Much appreciated
@@TheCarGuysTV How good this 512-Modificato would be with front bumper +pop-up headlights & rear hidden tail-lights of the older versions.. epic !
Some of the best entertainment on youtube
God.. that sound.. it has to rank in the top ten best ever sounding engines. Fascinating review sir!
Kudos to Andrew for driving this monster all the way down to Portugal💪
Legend
I would definitely second that 👌😁
Haha, it’s the car that’s the legend. It got me and a friend there without any trouble - first time for me to drive such an old car such a long distance, I wasn’t looking forward to an arrival on a low loader! Needn’t have worried, it was a fantastic experience. We had to do 1,600 miles in blistering heat and in less than 48 hours, which unfortunately meant too much motorway. But when we could venture off the beaten track, well, you already heard the soundtrack :). Feeling pretty blessed!
love the car
Great vid, very informative, definitely gives a new found appreciation for the model, but 512TR still my preference….
I remember one of these in my home town in the ‘90s. The owner also had an S600 so was clearly a fan of 12 cylinder monsters.
Fab continuation of the testarossa bloodline, great series and keep it up! I just cannot wait for that F50 video...
Mr Butt, the only genuine educator of Ferrari on UA-cam. Especially when we are lost in the modern world of 488, 812 and all the other modern nonsense. It is Mr Butt who shares he’s knowledge and makes some of us remember what Ferrari is really about.
Thank you Mr Butt.
You are most welcome
Fantástico, maravilloso, qué sonido más increíble, qué experiencia más bonita ha tenido que ser conducir semejante maravilla. Bravo. Forza Ferrari siempre.-
Beautiful sound 🤙🏻🏎
I've said it before, but I'm absolutely loving this series. Drive Every Ferrari has the potential for a finite shelf life, in that, what will happen if and when you've driven Every Ferrari? My hope is that this series will continue with the drives of interesting variations on previously driven models. Your journeys as you pursue the hard to come by models. I'd hate to see this series hit a lull once you've driven most everything and you're scratching to locate some of the more difficult stuff. Thanks for your efforts here, Damian! Keep up the great work.
I do love that instrument cluster and, honestly, they could reproduce it digitally. Also, wow, I wasn't expecting the F512 M so quickly- Outstanding!
Great filming terrific narration fun to watch like the 512 TR model best as well. for one thing the car is too wide for round taillights in the back I like the horizontal lines of the 512 in the back
cheer mate
USA
👍🏻👍🏻
Was lucky enough to sit in a Terstorossa just the other day. Along side the Countach, this was my dream car as a child. Fantastic information in the video, thank you.
👍🏻👍🏻
I think that the wheels were “stolen” from the Pinanfarina mythos concept car which I think was based on the 512. For me the 512tr is the one but interesting to see the numbers produced.
The 512TR is the prettiest of the 3.
Peak Testarossa.
I hated this car when it originally launched, I though it looked like a dogs dinner. However, this car as grown so much on me over the years. I now absolutely love it, one of my favourite Ferrari’s. Perhaps not quite as pure as the 512 TR, but it’s rarity and performance makes it stand out.
👍🏻👍🏻
This is still a bit like a dogs dinner - the headlights completely ruined it. The original and the TR when they first came out looked like heaven to me as a kid. The original is still the best, hands down
Likewise David!
The 512 line = Kim Basinger
Testarossa = 80s Kim ,exotic
512 TR = 90s Kim,PERFECTION
512 M = After 90s Kim , unnecessary bolt ons.
The Sound and after putting the foot down, breathing out! . Thank you.
awesome sound,what a music!
F512M was my childhood poster car. I would spec mine however with the TR wheels. Was waiting for a good review of the F512M for ages, and finally it is in the ‘Tube’. Thanks
👍🏻👍🏻
What a beast! It should be in your garage Damian. Excellent review.
Love how you have used 80/90's iconic movie clips fopr this video. Very nice!
I couldn’t resist
The Testarossa and 512TR will always get the wow factor, over this which is a better drive.
I loved the reviews of the trio of Testarossa, thank you.
Having grown up in the 80s the Testarossa was my bedroom wall pin-up (along with Samantha Fox haha.)
About ten years ago I was in the market for something from Modena.
I did consider the Testarossa as an option as prices were about half that of today's values, but having heard the horror stories of engine removal for the majority of servicing tasks, I decided upon a Rosso Corsa/Crema combo 360, which I still own and love to this day.
However, your recent vids have got me lusting after my old 80s pin-up, (Not Sam Fox) but the Testarossa.
Maybe I will take the plunge!
Well worth the wait....
Amazing as ever..
Best way to relax with a cuppa..
👏
I love this car
That howl at 21:09 Awesome review of the car too!
Mesmerising series from someone who ‘gets’ Ferrari…loving it…thank you Damien, may it never end
👍🏻👍🏻
Hi
Love ur channel and appreciate the work that u do. I just finished the paperwork for a Swiss model 512 TR and am eagerly awaiting it. My only question to u is out of the 2 exhausts, the Kreisigg on the TR and the Tubi on the 512m, which did u prefer. I want to install one of them.
Great video guys, agree re 512TR being the one to have, all stunning machines though. 👏
Great video and stunning car; cheers Damian and Andrew. Bloody good number plate too. How about B3ANSS for the next addition to the CG stable?!
What an amazing car. My fav was the hood / headlights and oh yeah the music of the v12 but that goes without saying. Dare I say your best video to date?
Some hopefully useful feedback on some points made:
The shocks are manually adjustable, so can be softened off if that's your preference.
The steering gets lighter in corners if you get on the power earlier, thereby shifting the weight of the car rearwards. This then allows the steering to wriggle and talk even more.
The front lights are certainly not pretty, but do provide good light! Much better than the earlier models.
👍🏻👍🏻
I am impressed.
Beautiful ferrari f512m!!!!
Great presentation. I enjoyed your video very much.
An excellent video and review of this rare car. Thank you for sharing it.
👍🏻👍🏻
It looks WAY better in your vid than it did in its publicity shots! It is actually a stunning looking car and it hasn't got the hilariously outdated interior of the original Testarossa, so I think this would be my choice of the three.
The tubi sounds absolutely glorious on this!
I'm also not convinced by the front (and rear) lights, but really always loved the interior and the engine. A F512 M with Testarossa looks would be perfection...
Damian I've just put 2+2 together, simply by watching another one of your videos ; that rear design with the round lights and horizontal strakes appears to be directly inspired by the Testarossas' predecessor - the 512BB. More interesting is seeing the 512 and noticing what it gave to the TR's with those strake design cues.
Thanks Damien, enjoying the series a lot! Are you going to get to drive some of the old classics (Daytona, 275 GTB etc)?
Yes indeed
The door Handel part got me. Not for the door ,but my man's Patek clasp shining !!
This series is really enjoyable. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Great car, great video again. Also recognised the village at the start as it’s just up the road from me!
The 512 tr is a good looking car the F 512M looks like a kit car . Love the series
Most people agree!
Italian cars don't age very well.
Always lusted after the F512M, even though I prefer the look of the 512TR. Really enjoying this video 🎥🏎
I remember tailing an F 512 M home on the last day of my freshman year of college, over 20 years ago. It was a black one. Unfortunately I did not have my windows down to hear the engine, since it was raining pretty heavily that day. I did start out ahead of it, so I did get to see it from 180 degrees. I have since had the 512 M on my list of dream cars alongside its ten years younger, front engined “look alike” baby brother, the 575 M Superamerica; which is also very underrated.
man... so cool! Thanks for bringing me on the ride! Greetings from NY
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the data overlays. Thanks.
I owned a Testarossa tr.
Positives: 1 with a Tubi exhaust the sound at mid to high revs was awesome.
2. Top end of the car was around 188.
3.The car drew a lot of attention because it was qite uniquiely styled. 4.
It was a magnet forwomen.5. It was a wonderful Gt car whether procee d ing at high speed on I5 or more leisurely up Pac Coast Highway.
NEGATIVES 1. IT was no sports car.
The relatively soft suspension and rear weight bias could get you in a lot of trouble if you went into actight corner too hot. 2. The car was fastbut not REALLY fast.
The last 10 mpg csme in slow. It was a heavy car and the 5 loter engine wasnt particulsrly trquey.3.
The attotde of the dealers who serviced the car was abysmal.
4. A major servuce was quite expensive as were the parts. The fibreglas front airdam made negotiating approach or departure ramps an adenture if you didnt wish to break it. Fortunately it was quite easy to repair being fibrelass.
The use of leather on the dash neant that hotsuight thru the sindshield wud destroy and shrink the eather.you had to se a sunscreen to shade the dashwhen you oarked and locked it.
Conclusions 1.A good Gt car but not in the same league as say a 928 S4.
2 Definitely no sports car. My somwhat mo d ified Pantera with a CLEVELAND 351 pushing notth of 500 hp would run rings around it. As would my Renntech
Modified 2006 E55 MB which was making around 550 hp and aboud 575 ftlbs of torque.
Very useful real life feedback, thanks, Joe
You had me from the first few frames... that sounds EPIC! 👌 It just has a 'quality' about it... that's quite fantastic.
👍🏻👍🏻
Lovely example of a Testarossa turned up to 11. That noise is just fantastic so sad that we will never get that sound again from a modern car.
The sound when this engine winds out is audible bliss. Nothing beats the sound of a Ferrari. Nothing.
Love the video and I’m only two mins in….my take on the M is they tried to improve on perfection when it needed no help….the best old school v12 ferrari by far it’s iconic and prices are going mental as people realise it
I agree about the headlights. I like the rearr lights and everything else.
Really enjoying the indepth look you're having at these beautiful cars.
Cheers for the content 👌
Fantastic, that noise is pure Cannonball! I was fortunate to drive an F512M around Mugello back in the 90's. The engine noise is still with me. Flat 12 masterpiece. 550 V12 doesn’t even come close.
I think these 90s Ferrari's are a real sweet spot. More than enough power for the road, wonderful noise and feel to them.
@@richardcarter1000 yes absolutely and for me the tactility of the open gate manual
As an ex Lotus/Ferrari Aerodynamicist, I own a 512TR and an Exige S3!
What a cracking series Drive every Ferrari is, I wish it was on Netflix so I could binge watch it 😂😂. I love the original Testarossa but like you I’d have the TR and drive it everywhere!!
Much appreciated, Stefan
Stunningly beautiful song from that engine!
It really is!
I like the design of the F512M's front bumper what I don't like are the headlights! But overall I really like the car, although I still prefer the 512TR among the three!
Michael Jordan's Black Testarossa made me fall in love with this beauty 😍🤩
Thank you for your reviews. They are fantastic! As a newbie learning about Ferrari's there are no better video's. What a great series!
Glad you like them!
Man, how could Ferrari so ruin the design of the beautiful 512 TR ?
I love this car. Especially its different front end and the rear circular lights. It’s my 2nd favorite Ferrari. My number one favorite Ferrari is the F50 😊
So cool to check out the car!!!
Best looking of the 3 is this one imho. Deserves a lot less hate towards the aesthetics.
I've never liked the front end on the M. The Alloys and Rear End haven't really bothered me that much tbf. The TR is still the best looking by a Gnats Chuff above the Original imo. There used to be a M version in the mid 00s just up the road from me in Hunsworth West Yorkshire. Not seen it in about 15 years or so though.
You haven't seen it in 15 years?
Godzilla must have eaten it.
Awesome, really a great videofor a great car
Thank you, Roberto
Another brilliant instalment in the series. Love it!
👍🏻👍🏻
That's was brilliant, love it🤗
👍🏻👍🏻
Great video Damian! And special thanks to Tubi for making the most of that very special exhaust note! Interesting that those same tail lights look so good on the F355 but are so out of place on the F512M.
👍🏻👍🏻
Super series... WOW car. the sound is near F1 of the past. Thx you for making these interesting videoS!
The comparison many have always wanted between the three variations! Quality and honest review as always and think I am still 512TR…..just. DEF is an complete indulgence to watch! Thanks 👍
Such a rare treat. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
3 weeks away on holiday and I come back to Testarossa trilogy. Wow
You’re welcome
keep up the great content 👏 👌
👍🏻👍🏻
Brilliant!
Wonderful as ever. I’m with you TR wins 👍👍👍
This is such an excellent overview - Just Superb someone as Yourself, with really great exlerience, taking the opportunity, comparing for us the " subtle" nuances of a Great Iconic automobile in its, and our evolution. You knowledge and presentation is deeply appreciated and enjoyable THANKYOU🙏 Salute'
You’re most welcome
512 M has the beautiful rims
Amazing 🤩 beautiful cars F512M ❤😊
Saw one only once. Absolutely awesome Ferrari
Fantastic video as always and loving this series. Regarding Testarossa lineage, can't get past the rear end looks of the 512 M. If I had the money and garage space would have to be the TR. I take some solace that the control stalks are the same as those in my Integrale. :)
Once Ferrari goes full electric, they will be dead to me. Take away those engines and they lose their soul. That flat 12 is just stunning, what a glorious sound! Loved this m8 👍
Agreed
Seems like about 30 years ago when I was working for Carlos and Charlie's in Austin Texas the new owners who are from Dallas came down and one of the brothers, was driving a 512tr with his golf clubs in the front seat. It was freaking awesome
I think people forget or don’t realize that the TR was designed to be harmonious to the 348. Front bumper/wings/strakes/ lights etc. And the M was designed to sit with the 355… Parts sharing basically.
The 512m is definitely the coolest one of the three in my opinion. But each of them is absolutely amazing in their way.
Saw one of these while driving in Australia on the weekend, was beautiful, not a car expert so had to look it up. The m wasn't imported into Australia. I'm pretty certain it was imported from the UK independently so was a rare find 💖💖
Worth the wait.
If the drive by footage doesn't persuade people of why Ferraris are different & special, nothing will!
i have a few Testarossas...
1:18 scale
I'd love to drive one , one fine day.
Great channel, very well filmed and put together. This is what youtube should be all about.Great and original content.Kudos!
wow he's driving to Portugal! My garage has the perfect room for it.If your friend comes to Porto that is.Lol
well i realized this video is more than 1 month old, so ok don't mind my previous comment. If he'd come to Porto i'd advise him not to rely on GPS alone, specially where i live in an old area of Porto city by the river/sea, where some streets are so narrow ,only a Smart car would fit in.So yes if he would go through my street he would be in serious trouble, i don't even drive my RCZ with a wide @ss there , but the TR or 512 has a wider behind than mine, so no, stay away from old narrow city streets .
They don't make 'em sound like that anymore. Wonderful.
What a great idea for a series. Well done that man! That is the sound that goes through every child's head when making car noises.
👍🏻👍🏻
That was brilliant. Thanks again. I reckon a left hand drive isn't necessarily a bad thing for toll booths, cos there are so few in the UK, but when you drive around the Alps you'll be quite grateful.
Awesome 😎
The went too far with this one. The 512TR was perfect but the F512M had too much going on design wise, the headlight and the round taillight that just don't help the design
512TR all day long. The end! Although the sound!!! Sooo good!!
Notice the steering wheel spacer!! Big improvement in ergonomics (especially for a taller drivers)
