Pressure wash. I've worked in a couple of car washes so i'm pretty confident about what I'm doing. My washer's a small and weak but my brother, who always thinks he knows best, still managed to damage the paint on his car. Oh and only ever use microfibre cloths - never a chamois! Then wax, wax and wax your paint
I pressure washed my house before painting, you are absolutely correct, you can strip paint off. I was trying to, but the lesson learned was you always try it on a small area first.
I just commented a couple days ago on someone's video who was power washing their bike, and didn't cover the open air cleaner lol glad you mentioned it here, seems like a lot of people don't even think about it
I’m old fashioned in my mc cleaning. Bucket, sponge, and a good soap for those of us that get inclement weather. And I usually use Lucas or Chemical Guys spray wax/retailer that’s okay to use while the bike is wet. The absolute, most important thing I use however, is microfiber towels to dry/wipe the wax off.
I like using the rule... if you can hold your hand in the spray it is gentle enough for our bikes. Many electric pressure washers are low enough psi for this. Of course common sense is still required. It is nice that most car washes nowadays have a low pressure option. Our preference is to hand wash only using the low pressure to first rinse any dust then rinse the soap. Once the bikes are done we then bath the Motör-Dogz... lol.
Your videos are pure gold! I thought I knew a lot about Harleys, but after watching your videos, I've learned so much more. These Harleys can be a black hole $$ if you go crazy on the upgrades trying to make them 100% bulletproof. I hope my 2006 Springer with the s&s cam plate, hydraulic tensioners & TC3 oil pump will be solid going forward. I don't want to drop anymore money in it. I ride it pretty conservatively and it's still an 88 cubic inch. I took your idea of a Ultra Cool billet replaceable oil filter assembly as well. Hopefully it filters well & flows and cools the oil a little bit more.
Here’s my point of view, when I wash my bike by hand using a hose….. I don’t want any more water coming at that bike then what would come at that bike in a hard rain. That being said I run low pressure hose over the whole bike and I use warm soapy water and serious elbow grease… then the leaf blower. Just my 2 cents
I may use the PW in the spring when the bike comes out of hibernation... having sat in the shed for 5 months. But like you said many times, and absolutely show be said often. Distance, Distance, Distance. Thanks for the wall mounted PW idea.. That's a cool unit!
Only when I get a build-up of grime underneath. Most of my bikes still have chain rear drive. PW-ing the skid plate under my Pan & Shovel motors is a must. Insides of fenders too. Cover those pipe ends! One of my bikes has wide whitewalls. And after a nice wash & wax, I fired it up, only to have my rear gangsta whitewall covered with watery exhaust pipe contents! And be careful when PW-ing wheels. Don't directly hit the hubs too close lest ye get water in the wheel bearings.
I always use my small electric pressure washer to wash my ultra limited. Best way to get all the bugs off the fairing. I also use my foam cannon and then leaf blower to dry it off.
Car wash soap, bucket with grit guard installed, microfiber type sponge and regular hose. On the wheels and under the engine I use spray nine and a dish washing type sponge for glasses. Drying is an "absorber" initially, then a towel, then a leaf blower to finish. Always run the bike after washing, ride it if possible. Enjoy!
NEVER use a sponge! They hold dirt and put fine scratches/haze in paint. Especially gloss black! My Pop had a few nice cars in gloss black and taught me to only use a brush. Get a good soft fine horsehair or nylon bristle car wash brush. I've watched others (charity car/bike wash!) using a sponge or cloth, drop it, pick it up, and keep on rubbing.
@@pb68slab18 True on the sponges. Allow them to dry and bump them a few times, you’ll see the dust/dirt they hold. But the type he’s using do not have the same issues.
More tips: If your garage isn't heated, take your pressure washer in the house in winter. After you change tips, shoot the water in a safe direction briefly before you point at your motorcycle. After you select a tip you like, spray your hand at various distances to determine a safe distance for your motorcycle.
I hand wash and only soft pressure wash the underside at the local car wash once in a while. Also, after I dry my bike, I'll take it out for a ride to heat up the motor and exhaust so that there is no dampness in the areas I can't get to. Also, it just seems to me that a clean vehicle runs and rides/drives better.
I wash with a pressure washer....just not everytime....when I do I use the low pressure nozzle and from a few feet away!...been wanting to get a leaf blower for awhile now!!...should just go do it!😉👍....thanks for sharing....stay safe out there!!😎👍🤙👍🤙🇨🇦
You have a future in infomercials. Nice push on the pressure washer. I live in the deep south, the bugs stuck to the fairing dictate what type of washing will be done.
I wash my twin cam by hand , my shovel head has not seen water in 30 years because I don’t ride it in bad weather. I use mother’s or mcguires quick detailer and microfiber towel, then I use ceramic spray for top coat
Torque cones work, DK Customs has some and they are awesome for gaining a little extra power and torque. They are really important to run especially if you have a really short exhaust system like the Vance and Hines Short Shots.
That's honestly the best years of the Twin Cam, you have the .511 cams in the HO motor which is a nice bump over the .468 cams of the older 103's. Just me but I like the Twin Cam Dyna models a lot more than the new M8 models they carried over from the Dyna in the new Softail.
🛑🛑 Gix…I use the Jet Blasters to dry my bike. Its basically a Vacuum Cleaner running in Reverse, but very intense. The Wand is light weight, and made of plastic. What's the GPM on that pressure washer? Doesn't look like it has enough pressure or GPM to get a good foam on the cannon. Why would you use a 15 degree tip? That's going to concentrate the pressure to a smaller area and end up puncturing or damaging something like you stated. I wouldn't use anything more than a 40 Degree on a motorcycle, boat or car.
I use pressure washer to wash my motorcycles all the time because none of my motorcycles are pristine Beauties and last all of the oil leaking off of them so they look real pretty for a little while anyway. If your Harley is a garage Queen with low mileage and perfect paint and perfect Chrome then I can imagine you pay someone $100 to detail your bike but not for me.
Thanks for sharing! Yeah I see those guys have a mobile detailer come out and drop 100 bucks to have all that done. I'm always thinking it's going to be after dark when we leave and it's a shower of bugs lol.
It's hard to get around pressure washing dirt bikes! I see guys that take their Harley to the car wash and call it a day, car wash has way too much pressure in my opinion.
I’ve had no issues, when done properly of course. My dad never washed, just wiped and the paint looked nice but never had everything completely new clean. I’m too ocd for that. I see one thing, then another, before I know it I’ve cleaned under the fenders. I’m the guy you want to buy used from.
That's good stuff, doing it right is a big deal even though it sounds pretty mundane. That McGuire's actually lifts the dirt off the surface instead of grinding the dirt into the clear coat. It can really be a science if you want to really get into the rabbit hole.
What was the name of the pressure washer ? Pretty cool gadget. It’s got to be more convenient than dragging my dinosaur pressure washer out. I use a foam cannon with that green turtle wax spot free. Gently rinsing is the key. Don’t blow the good off with the bad. Excellent video. Thank you

I have never needed to use a pressure washer on either of my bikes. My 4 wheeler that gets much dirtier does not need this kind of washing either . Patience is key, wet the dirt and mud, in a few minutes it’s soft enough that average water pressure with a typical multi head sprayer nozzle is safe and does a good job. The pressure washer? Decks and siding otherwise, no can do!
I use a power washer on all my bikes, with differing pressure and distance. I avoid the enter fairing/electronics with foam cannon, then hand wash and rinse the same. Bikes look mint, years and thousands of miles later. I ceramic coat them all as well. I find any reason to stay in my shop.
I dont wash motor cycles anymore after I found a rust hole on my 1990 flhs at where the engine and swing arm mount to the frame. that area is a built up gusseted and hollow and caught water and it didnt drain out for years until one day I saw a rust spot on both sides. I poked at it with a screw driver and it went through. I was horrified. I drilled out the damage. put drain holes in it. got out all the rust particle powder and treated the inside with rust converter, painted it. its still holding up after 10 years. Now I use a california duster or a quick detailer spray and a wax now and then.
Best way I have found to get the bike cleaned up is to drop it off at my detailer...haha. on a serious note I don't ever wash my bike yet. Usually A good wipe down is all ive ever needed so far.
Once a year or unless I get caught in the rain is about the only time I need to really wash the bikes. Once a year just to get all the road grime off the bottom of the bike.
Yeh.. hmmm. No pressure washing for me. Also, Have had bad experiences with SJ100, just regular car soap. Use foaming window cleaner to get water spots off chrome. SJ100 is good for under the hood of your car.
In my opinion, I never use a pressure washer on a bike or vehicle or any boat engines that I repaired, repowered. Why would I apply hurricane force water pressure to an engine? It's the perfect tool for cleaning boat bottoms, and sterndrives. perfect for blowing dirt out of cement brick or stone. A dirt bike or a) terrain vehicles might be exceptions.
I will pressure wash my bike but as a detailer you should never use anything less than a 40° tip and never go anywhere above 1200 psi for a bike or a car and yes you shouldn't spray the air box directly or the neck either, everything else you were good on. Just watch the psi. If you can get 1,000 psi and 2 gpm that's perfect for a bike or a car.
